- more under the cut -
The first stanza gives me the vibes of Alphard, Andie, and Sirius deciding to leave and begging for their siblings to follow. The Black family drains everything unique about it's children and makes soilders, and those three didn't want to be. They tried for so long to change (beating a long dead horse) but being apart of the Black family is a life sentence.
The chorus is everyone. All of them are trapped in a cycle until they break it. "Never your baby, just a maybe," they never had kids to have kids. It was always for heirs. The Blood purity, so forth eeee
The middle stanza is Sirius and Regulus and Walburga.
It's between them and Walburga in the first part. Sirius and Regulus reminding Walburga of Alphard and herself - one trapped and lashing out and one desperately fleeing. Its also difficult because of how similar all three are - forced into positions, unhappy, lashing out. I would image that if they interacted as older, Sirius and Walburga still would have issues due to this. Even if she doesn't or didn't hit them with her hand, spells and words do it best.
It's between Regulus and Sirius in the second part. The dogs biting the bone is Sirius messing everything up with Remus and the others. "Daughter bites her words," Regulus not coming out as FmT for years due to fear. "Fight like wolves, then flee like birds," Whenever the brothers fight it's always vicious, pulling at old wounds and cruel - like their family. Then they both realize, fleeing before the other says something. "From the save pack but rivaling herds," the brothers come from the same family, but in the end have vastly different friends.
I also just imagine that when it doesn't get physical, the family does have screaming matches often. Cops would be called, the whole thing. Very early the kids learned they could use their words effectively against each other even if they couldn't against their parents. I imagine that while close, the boys and girls had a battle of shouts at least once a day (then sneak each other treats to make up for it.)
I could also imagine Sirius and Regulus trying to settle into the Potters and realizing how intertwined their family is in them. And also Reg and Sirius have to stomp to the back of the garden to have their arguments - they cannot not have them, because then they get waaaay worse.
Hi, hello, I'm lady_angst, author of Underneath a Sea of Stars and the Take My Hand (Take My Whole World, Too) series. In this post I wanted to rant a little about the symbolism behind the wands Hermione and Bellatrix were offered in chapter 5 of Never Forget What You Are, the first entry of TMH which corresponds to the Philosopher's Stone, as there is more to them than meets the eye. Enjoy!
Hermione's wands:
1st: Sycamore wood & unicorn hair. According to the wandlore found on the HP wiki, sycamore made a questioning wand eager for new experience and losing brilliance if engaged in mundane activities. Thus, the sycamore's ideal owner was curious, vital and adventurous, and when paired with such an owner, it demonstrated a capacity to learn and adapt that earned it a rightful place among the world's most highly-prized wand woods.
Ollivander offered Hermione this wand after realising she had a curious, inquisitive mind. The wand failed to form a bond with her because of how adventurous it was, which Hermione ultimately is not.
2nd: Hazel & phoenix feather. Again, according to the wandlore, hazel wands were sensitive and often reflected their owners emotional state. They worked best for a master who understood and could manage their own feelings.
Ollivander offered Hermione this wand in case she was emotionally intelligent on top of inquisitive. The wand failed to form a bond with her because, as we all know, Hermione is very temperamental and gets often lost in her own feelings and pride (especially Book!Hermione).
3rd: Vine & dragon heartstring: Vine wands were among the less common types; they seemed strongly attracted by personalities with hidden depths, and their ideal owners were nearly always those witches or wizards who sought a greater purpose, who had a vision beyond the ordinary and who frequently astounded those who thought they knew them best.
Hermione's canonical wand! It suits her beautifully, as there is more to Hermione than meets the eye. She's more than just a bushy-haired, know-it-all Muggle-born. She seeks a greater purpose: rising above others' expectations of her, fighting for what's right, keeping her friends and loved ones alive. And she has a vision beyond the ordinary: seeing Bella for who and what she truly is (after messing up big time every once in a while, but hey, we all love us some drama).
Bellatrix's wands:
1st: Walnut & dragon heartstring. Walnut wands were often found in the hands of magical innovators and inventors; this was a handsome wood possessed of unusual versatility and adaptability. Highly intelligent witches and wizards ought to be offered a walnut wand for trial first, because in nine cases out of ten, the two will find in each other their ideal mate. Once subjugated, perform any task its owner desired, provided that the user was of sufficient brilliance.
Bellatrix's canonical wand! Ollivander offers it to her after analysing her: "Left-handed... Creative... Clearly intelligent... There's something else, though... Something to those eyes..." He sees her intelligence and the sharpness (and perhaps the darkness) that dwells within her, so he offers her her canonical wand. However, it doesn't form a bond with her despite sharing a connection because this Bellatrix and the canonical one are not entirely the same—her upbringing was radically different, which affects her personality and way of viewing the world.
2nd: Cedar & dragon heartstring. The cedar wand found its perfect home where there were perspicacity and perception. Garrick Ollivander believed that whenever he met one who carried a cedar wand, he found strength of character and unusual loyalty. The witch or wizard who was well-matched with cedar carried the potential to be a frightening adversary, especially if harm was done to those they were fond of, which often came as a shock to those who had thoughtlessly challenged them.
Originally, this was going to be her wand. It suits her (and her canon self) just fine. Perceptive, strong of character, and unusually loyal? A frightening adversary, all the more so when those she's fond of? Now that's just Bellatrix 100%. But! I decided against it in favour of the one she gets in the end.
Moreover, Ollivander offered this wand to her because it follows the "clearly intelligent, but perhaps a bit jagged" assessment he made of her at first.
3rd: Dogwood & unicorn hair. Dogwood wands were quirky and mischievous; they had playful natures and insisted upon partners who could provide them with scope for excitement and fun. It would be quite wrong, however, to deduce from this that dogwood wands were not capable of serious magic when called upon to do so; they had been known to perform outstanding spells under difficult conditions, and when paired with a suitably clever and ingenious witch or wizard, could produce dazzling enchantments.
Again, this wand follows the "clearly intelligent" assessment, only without the jagged bit. This wand suits her, too, since Bellatrix grows out of her shell throughout PS-PoA until she becomes self-assured and rather playful in GoF-OotP. It also goes on beautifully well with her Patronus in this story. That said, it'll take her years to get to that point, and even then she'll have a fair bit of trauma and life lessons weighing her down, which skews that playful nature and prevents a bond from forming.
4th: Blackthorn & dragon heartstring. Blackthorn wands, which was a very unusual wand wood, had the reputation, in Garrick Ollivander's well-merited opinion, of being best suited to a warrior. These wands appeared to need to pass through danger or hardship with their owners to become truly bonded. Given this condition, the blackthorn wand would become as loyal and faithful a servant as one could wish.
In Ollivander's own words: “How about a wand best suited to a warrior for a young witch with a warrior’s name?”. He wanted to see if perhaps the "jagged" bit was more important than the "clearly intelligent" one with this wand. It also suits her beautifully, and it comes close to the Bellatrix we see in canon, but Bellatrix is more than this, she is more than just a warrior, as we will learn through the series.
5th, 6th, 7th...14th: Unknown.
15th: Walnut & dragon heartstring. Identical to the first in components, length and flexibility, but radically different in shape and demeanour. The main differences between the original one and this one are: the date of creation (mirroring Bellatrix's own conception) and the state of the wood (mirroring Bellatrix's own personality and morality). The walnut tree from which Ollivander got the wood for these wands turned out to be rotten. It is up to interpretation whether the first wand was affected by the affected rot or not. The same goes for the second one, even if Ollivander claims that he managed to salvage some of the wood that was untouched by it.
This ends up being Bellatrix's wand in this series; one that is so similar yet so different to the original where it matters. Like Bellatrix herself. The foundation is the same, but the end result? That's yet to be seen. Here is a reference of the original one vs the tmh one:
(I'll be honest with you, though. I just wanted to give Bellatrix a normal-esque wand so that she doesn't get arthritis from holding her canonical one. Yes, I know that UaSoS's Bella has her canonical one, but she'll put its claw-like shape to good use at one point, shhh.)
If you made it all the way down here, hello again and thank you so much for reading this post! Have a cookie🍪.
Love, Lilith xx
I was scrolling - as you do - and saw someone posting their headcanons for different marauders characters and I saw that they add some underrated characters (Alice, Frank, Bellatrix, Rita ect)
And now I feel like an asshole cause I kinda forgot about them.. so none of them have been added to my headcanon posts.. so imma add them now cause I feel bad
Literally all and any character from the Marauders era after they loss another person.
Regulus “please don’t say you love me” black.
Siurus “please don’t say you love me” black.
Bellatrix “please don’t say you love me” black.
Andromeda “please don’t say you love me” black.
Narcissa “please don’t say you love me” black.
Itty bitty waists are a very prominent feature in the house of black
those are some weird fishes
Feel that thinking about writing something about them bc I find nothing about them
Hot take (everyone expected it from me)
I think more about the Black Sisters than the Black brothers
Literally the idea that Andromeda escaped!! SHE MADE IT!! Only to have her daughter killed by Bellatrix! Her own sister!! THAT GETS ME
Where does this idea come from that the Black brothers are all dramatic and theatric? Regulus writes sad poems and lies on the floor soaking in his teenage tears and sorrow, while Sirius makes up fancy insults and tries to look artistic, entertaining everyone around him.
None of what they did or said is really dramatic or theatrical.
Sometimes their words might sound a bit lofty, but that's because all the Blacks were raised in a family culture that was a bit "elevated". It’s not about them being "naturally" dramatic or theatrical; they’re brought up differently, part of a family culture where honour, dignity, and "knightly" behaviour are more than just empty words. As the saying goes, some are into painting, some into literature, and some into sausages the Malfoys.
So, it's not just personal; it's the upbringing imposed on the Black character. These attitudes don’t just appear out of nowhere; one isn’t born with them, yet all the Blacks (even Narcissa to some extent, and she’s got more guts than Lucius) have them. Honour means different things to them, but it is still honour. They all stay true to their ideals, what’s important to them, they are fearless, not afraid of death, and honest in their actions and thoughts. I think it’s more family than personal.
Both Regulus and Sirius are very focused on the concept of honour, though they see it differently. You could write this on their tombstones:
Mine honour is my life; both grow in one. Take honour from me, and my life is done. Then, dear my liege, mine honour let me try; In that I live, and for that will I die.
(I’m purposely ignoring whose words these are — it doesn’t matter here)
Regulus "I face death in the hope that when you meet your match you will be mortal once more"
And Bella "You should be proud! If I had sons, I would be glad to give them up to the service of the Dark Lord"
And Sirius "I want to commit the murder I was imprisoned for..." and "THEN YOU SHOULD HAVE DIED! DIED RATHER THAN BETRAY YOUR FRIENDS"
It's not about their personal theatricality; it's about how such people see the world. These people view the world through a lens where pride, honour, and dignity aren't just idealistic, they're real and ingrained structures that live within them. It's the morality of knights versus a utilitarian approach, choosing what's right over what's just beneficial.
The independence of the Blacks’ thinking leads to unique outcomes — each person has their own idea of what's "right."
Regulus isn't just a sad boy with poems, forced into a vile organisation, then betraying Voldemort out of immense pity and love for a house-elf. And Sirius isn't just an artistic dancer on the bar with witty insults.
Both Regulus and Sirius have very clear views of what's right and wrong. Sirius is incredibly brave, as is Regulus in his own way — joining the Death Eaters at 16 is brave and dangerous, but if it's the "right" thing to do, it's worth it. And if the "right actions" lead to the destruction of the entire line—well, you know... He writes such a letter believing he is dying with honour, in contrast to Voldemort, a dishonourable being who, indeed, views honour as nothing but an empty word. I believe Voldemort was quite adept at manipulating these notions of "honour" among some purebloods. Voldemort is utterly utilitarian.
The same goes for Sirius — his upbringing and ideals are mistakenly attributed to excessive drama and theatricality, as if he's some clown who deliberately makes up fancy insults and entertains the crowd by dancing on tables. This destroys the essence of Sirius, turning him into an aesthetic leech created for amusement and consumption (of attention, things, pleasures, etc.), and turning everything into an aesthetic object. Consumption and Sirius are completely opposite concepts. Nothing he does is for the Other; there's no theatricality in his actions, no fashion, no aestheticism for the sake of it, no consumption for the sake of consumption. Sirius is a man of Grand Concepts, as is Regulus.

Lily, about Bellatrix: I like her, she has that, what do you call it?
Regulus: Cold blooded ruthlessness?
Lily: No, that’s not it.
Lily: Ah, a knife, she has a knife.
Lucius, about a fight between Bellatrix and Severus: It scares me how many knives were involved.
Lily: There… weren’t any knives involved though?
Lucius: That’s what scares me.
*************************OR***********************
Narcissa, about a fight between Lily and Severus: It scares me how many knives were involved.
Regulus: There… weren’t any knives involved though?
Narcissa: That’s what scares me.
*The squad is over at Narcissa's house*
Lucius: Ohhhh, we each get our own oven?
Narcissa: ... N-No...
Narcissa, laughing: How many ovens do you think I have???
Lucius, motioning to her kitchen: Three, I thought!
Bellatrix: I see a-
Narcissa, motioning to one device: This is a microwave.
Lucius: Oh, well I-
Narcissa: Hey wait wait, actually- hang on- *fiddles with the buttons on the microwave*
Narcissa, amazed: Its got a bake setting!
Regulus: Ohoho, you learn something new every day!
Severus: Do we- Do we roshambo for who gets to pick first?
Narcissa: Now I've just discovered I have more ovens than I thought, we don't have to roshambo nothin!
Narcissa: I am a woman who owns four ovens...
Narcissa, louder and way too happy: I am a woman... who owns FOUR OVENS...
Narcissa: I didn't know I was so rich with ovens...
Lily, pointing to another appliance: Also the toaster oven!
Narcissa:
Lucius: Ohhh, toasty boy! Four- Five ovens!
Narcissa:
Narcissa, fucking ECSTATIC: I AM A WOMAN WHO OWNS FIVE OVENS
Severus: So we're gathered here today for a very special reason and I think you'll all agree with me here.
Severus: And if you don't well then fuck you.
Severus: I'm looking at you, Bellatrix, you jealous mop.
Severus: You read my diary?
Bellatrix: At first I did not know it was your diary. I thought it was a very sad handwritten book.
Bellatrix: No, I don't want to talk about physics! I don't know anything about the laws of physics because they are hard and boring. I simply would like them to behave in a way that is most convenient to ME and MY LIFE! Is that really asking too much?
Severus: Yes, as a matter of fact, it is!
Bellatrix: Well, guess what? Science is stupid bullshit!!
Severus: You take that back!!!
Bellatrix: No. Magic is awesome. Science blows. The end.
Head Canons for the Slytherins in a little band
I imagine narcissa on the drums, sev as the singer, Lucius as lead guitar, Bellatrix as rhythm guitar (and when it's not need she does the keyboard) and Regulus as base. Also lily is their manager.
🐍
They switch around if need.
🐍
The others sometime sing a song and several other does small parts, when that happens
🐍
Severus never play the drums, he doesn't like to play them and he's not that good at it
🐍
The girls and Severus write the songs while reg and Lucius give suggestions (like what it could or should be about)
🐍
The tend to write and sing about how they feel or things they experienced, a few songs they made just for fun like a joke a nice break from pouring their emotions out
🐍
The name of their band is 'death eaters' (does it sound better as 'the death eaters' or give suggestions)
🐍
If the song is about someone and don't want that person, they make sure the lyrics don't directly point that person out.though sometimes they don't care and decide to taunt that person in the song
🐍
Some songs just one member writes and will make sure the others like it before they completely finish it (the others ALWAYS like it)
🐍
They love each other like family and each of them have written a song for/about one another
🐍
Because Severus usually doesn't have an instrument Lucius likes making up dances for Severus to do
🐍
If sev is feeling extra he'll jump and dance on some of the tables, especially if the song is about someone, then he'll jump on that persons table and make sure to point that person out.
🐍
Their outfits sorta match and always has something representing Slytherin
🐍
Sev puts his hair up sometimes, he always has some in the front out so he still has a curtain of hair to hide behind
🐍
Narcissa and Bellatrix are usually the ones to sing along with sev
🐍
I'll post what I imagine their outfits looking like
if jily + other marauders era characters weren't in the houses they are in:
james would be a cute little hufflepuff because hes loyal af, kind (to people who deserve it) and also he is an excellent cook (my hc)
lily evans is a ravenclaw, and there is no argument for her being slytherin. a) she would probably be murdered or tortured for being muggleborn, b) she THIRSTS for knowledge (and james potter) and is extremely creative and witty and self-aware. plus shes (in most fanfics i read) excellent at charms which is flitwicks class.
anyways if they werent the ultimate gryffindor head boy/girl couple, they would be the huffleclaw head boy/girl couple that everyone adored.
sirius: he is a gryffindor fight me on this
remus: ravenclaw
peter: hufflepuff EXCEPT towards the end hes a slytherin
marlene: slytherin
dorcas: she was ORIGINALLY a gryffindor but if not then she would be a ravenclaw
mary: hufflepuff
regulus: ravenclaw
evan: hufflepuff
barty: gryffindor
narcissa: hufflepuff
andromeda: gryffindor
bellatrix: ravenclaw
Adult Hermione and young Bella. Vampire AU
Bellamione AU WIP
Voldemort: *enjoying his time shaming Bellatrix and Narcissa that Nymphadora maried Remus*
Narcissa & Draco: *had the time of their lives in that wedding*
I am mixing to of fav fandoms cause I can.
Sirius, James, and Charles who talk about starting a band all the time but never do it.
Regulus, Remus, Lily, and Edwin sit and read or talk about there partners.
Crystal and Marlene would be amazing together. The levels of sass through the roof.
Barty and Evan would be try to talk to the cat king so much thinking he is so cool. Might smoke together honestly.
Pandora, Niko, and Monty would be a trio I would like to see. Just the vibes there.
Peter and Monty are two that have sort of this opposite going parallel (I say like I know what that means) and I think that would be interesting. Also know I am think of astrology loving Peter and that slays.
Ester and Bellatrix would be in a competition. Not sure for what but they would.
I always love it when the Black cousins have closer relationships to each other in fan works.
In my head, Sirius is Andromeda's baby and Regulus is Narcissa's. Bellatrix is not allowed to babysit alone lol.
A while ago I read a fic where Sirius goes to live with Andromeda instead of the Potters when he runs away and it might have been deleted because I can't find it, but it was sooo sweet.
I'm also currently reading a fic where Andromeda took Sirius with her when she left and raised him as her son. Will add the fic name and author if I can find it. (After All This Time by starsarestories on ao3)
But I haven't been able to find any fics with Narcissa and Regulus like that, or even Bellatrix and Regulus and its killing me. I need it.
