Ibe had been previously married, and divorced several times. He's a hopeless romantic and realizes that he's probably made a mistake when it's way too late. He also previously knew Eijis mom in highschool, but they were separated after college and just simply growing up. They weren't too close but were definitely friends.

Eijis little sister is four years younger that him, and she is obsessed with idols and wants to be one.

Ash is constantly cold, Eiji is constantly breaking a sweat.

Shorter often gets so immersed in things that he forgets to take care of his basic needs. Lucky for him, he has a wonderful friend who tells him "take a shower you smell like shit" when he forgets ( bet you can guess who)<3

I don't want to sound pretentious but if I remember correctly Yoshida said Ash and Eiji would had end up having sexual intercouse and Ash being on the bottom side.

And its great, tbh. Its great and its hot and its beautiful. So I dont get why the fandom tries to hide it or avoid the topic when there is even a oficial art of Ash in bed sleeping naked next to Eiji.

It's not necessarily bad to sexualize a character based on canonical stuff, much less because having been sexually abused has nothing to do with consensual love.

the banana fish fandom has been looking like it's dying recently, so let's share headcannons!

Eiji is a huge star wars fan, Shorter on the other hand is a huge star trek fan. Instead of fighting about this, they instead nerd out together and have binged the entirety of Star Trek the original series and the original Star wars movies ( jokes on them Ash is a fuckin nerd who loves both)

Shorter is a really big fan of music, pretty much any kind. Ash likes any kind of music that has a lot of music, so imagine him listening to alot of Midwest emo ( he loves la dispute) and also classical. Eiji listens to pretty much anything on the radio, but he has a soft spot for classic rock and metal like Ozzy Osborne.

Yut Lung has about 5 Instagram accounts, and he uses each of these just to bully others that he finds himself jealous of.

sing is a beyblade kid. Shorter also loves beyblades and he plays with sing.

Shorter introduced Eiji to South park. He has never been the same.

If we're looking at a banana fish AU in 2025, that would mean the boys are all Gen z ( which is absolutely crazy to think about) Eiji was definitely a unrestricted Internet access kid which is probably why he can deal with so much shit. Someone getting killed? That's nothing. Smile HD? Now that's terrifying.

Shorter probably has eaten a tidepod or something like that.

Ash collects classic vinyl, which is one of his escapes. He has all kinds, pop, jazz, rock, even some new stuff, but it really helps him calm down.

Shorter plays drums and Ash plays guitar. They were once in a two piece punk band which ended with a shootout between them and a rival gang.

shorter is actually really smart, but he dropped out of school because he was struggling with his ADHD and wanted to help his sister.

Ash would often claim Nadia as his own sister because she was so awesome.

Ash doesn't really get Japanese, so he started watching subtitled anime to try to understand the language better.

In Cape cod, the boys shot their own movie. Ash didn't want to be in front of the camera so he helped Eiji with the cinematography. It was a very poorly produced 15 minute film about Shorter, an aspiring actor, and it strangely turns into a zombie gore flick.

Ash and Eiji have some of the worst pet names and it's mostly a joke. Sometimes Eiji will call Ash some Japanese word with an absolutely crazy meaning, and Ash will think it's sweet but it definitely isn't.

Ash is definitely little spoon and he will fight for the death to keep this.

Despite his love for mustard, Ash absolutely cannot take spicy food, but he eats it cause he likes it.

Ash is a dog person and Eiji is a cat person.

uh, help I just EXPLAINED THE ENTIRE PLOT OF BANANA FISH to my mom and now she wants to watch it HOW DO I SAVE HER?!!!

I think, what made me love Banana Fish so much despite the many sad, violent, and tragic things that went down was the very broad relationship of Ash and Eiji. Cliche to say? Maybe. I will always be grateful that Yoshida chose this direction than have it as another het story. With what those two have they didn't need to be in specifics on who they are to each other or what it means to be together. I remember in Garden of Light, Sing described their relationship as "more than romantic" got to me. That shifted a lot of things within my aroace mind and heart. Anyone can interpret it as romantic or platonic alike or possibly both. It's just great that, you can simply love someone so much by just existing as themselves, without, and together.

Ash and Eiji's first meeting felt like two universes colliding. You can feel the entire room shift even when there's nothing to shake it, and see the colors turn a bit brighter than usual. The moment they locked eyes it feels uncertain yet they were so sure of each other at the same time.

I guess Ash is somewhat guarded since Ibe's there. Knowing how he can't trust adults so much. Yet the next scenes that come after their first eye contact, Ash is interested, testy or maybe teasing even towards Eiji. To say the least they were both interested in each other. Curious.

Day 4 of crying over banana fish, when usually making me cry would be like moving mountains. I cried myself to sleep the past 3 nights after finishing the anime, this is seriously a different kind of pain. I don’t think any story will ever hurt me as much as this. It really tugs at every fiber of your being until all you’re left with is an inconsolable ache in your heart. I don’t regret anything though. Ash and Eiji will forever be in my thoughts, and their story will forever exist in my soul.
