Sick on her birthday but her friends put so much work into planning things to make her feel happy and loved... They've all been going through so much lately, and they just wanted her to have a good day, so she's going to have to go through hell hiding it.

god i LOVE this trope and her cousin, sick on her best friend/girlfriend/wife's birthday but she doesn't want to ruin it and they've been through so much lately that she feels like she has to hide it.

maybe they find her crouching in a corner trying to catch her breath. or they know that something is up when she doesn't eat dinner/cake. or maybe she even gets through most/all of the night before totally collapsing. either way, the gang wishes she'd just said something sooner so they could have taken care of her from the start because they love her more than they care about the party <3

I think in theory Effie deserves better but my personal head canon is that Haymitch and Effie kind of gravitate around and towards each other over the 25 years. Sexually, romantically, emotionally.

Some years she’s in a relationship (my Effie is bi) and other years something reminds him too much of Lenore and he’s too guilty to go to her, but when he’s just the right level of drunk and she’s unattached and they both experience the horrors they find comfort in each other.

They know each other intimately and deeply and horrifically but if it was ever real outside of the apartments of the Capital it would be something that could be lost so they don’t acknowledge it in the cold light of day.

They love each other and in fact at different times they are in love with the other (depressingly it doesn’t overlap) but it’s just something that they never can pursue in reality. He thinks he’s betraying Lenore Dove by loving anyone else and not stoping the reaping.

But after the epilogue, after he fulfilled his promise to Lenore Dove, I like to imagine that Effie comes to 12 to meet the first toast baby and there in the warm summer sun, when Haymitch thinks his time is coming near, it’s actually his final rebirth.

He and Effie finally allow themselves to be together at like age 60 and spend their twilight years essentially in quiet comfort together.
