A/N: Ahhh I’m very excited to share this! I’ve spent a long time planning out this series and how I’m going to write it and it’s finally here!

“It was a stupid decision.” His cold voice cut through the room, turquoise eyes burning in annoyance as he looked at the figure in front of him. You stood on opposite ends of the table from each other, a piece of paper clutched tightly in his hands as silence filled the room. The alchemy lab that had once felt like such a peaceful place to you now felt uncomfortable and everyone else in the Knights of Favonius Headquarters was aware of the tension that brewed between you and your fellow captain.

“No one saw it coming.” You hissed in return, eyes blazing like the Vision that hung on your hip, fists clenched as you slightly leaned against the table. The man across from you scoffed and you were brought back to the event that occurred just hours ago at the base of Dragonspine. The Chief Alchemist was planning to head up the unforgiving mountain alone to do research when you had come up to him, proposing to join him, along with a few other knights for safety. Despite his protests, you insisted and he relented, grumbling about not wanting others to disturb his work. Neither of you were expecting the frostarm lawachurl to burst out from the ruins, destroying the camp you had just set up and nearly taking out one of the knights who had accompanied you. Any materials for research were lost in the snow as you fled. There were no casualties by the time the small group had emerged from the mountains but the alchemist was furious, refusing to speak with the other captain.

“You meddled with my work. Again.” The alchemist turned around to throw the paper he held in his hands on a counter, refusing to face the figure behind him.

“You have never once been opposed to my companionship.” You protested, moving around the table to step closer to him. His eyes shot up to meet yours but his face was impossible to read.

“Did you ever think, that maybe I say nothing because there’s no point?” He scoffed and stepped closer. “Your presence is like a hummingbird, always making noise in my ear. Frankly, it’s irritating.” His expression was blank but his eyes were clouded with a mix of rage and disappointment. You blinked and stepped back at his statement. Was this how he really felt for the past few years? He took another step closer and you stumbled over your feet, hands reaching behind only to crash into another table behind you, your elbow hitting something before it fell over. Whirling around, you could only watch as water spilled from a bottle over the alchemist’s sketchbook. It was silent and you closed your eyes, preparing for the worst.

“Leave.” His voice was soft but devoid of any emotion. You bit your lip and turned around to apologize, but the words died in your mouth when you met his eyes. They were cold and unforgiving, a raging storm swirling inside of them.

“You’re nothing but a distraction here.” He stated, his voice scarily calm. “Get out of this room, I don’t need you.”

“Albedo, I’m sorry.” You tried and raised your hand but he was quicker, one gloved hand shooting forward and catching your wrist, his grip tight. It was almost terrifying at how calm he was, yet his eyes and voice were colder than the winds of Dragonspine.

“I don’t want to see you here ever again. Leave.”

after the incident that happened between you and his former assistant, he hadn’t left the lab and you inside it for days

he claims to others that something in his research had come up and he would be requiring maximum isolation for the next few days

or weeks

(absolutely believable considering the timely announcement of his deceased assistant)

“albedo..” the alchemist’s eye twitched at the ring of your voice, beckoning him to you

“shouldn’t you at least entertain me–your captive?” you sickeningly chuckle as you notice his annoyance

soon this turned into complete panic

“come on,” you cling onto his arm, “pay attention to me before i leave you with no assistants at all.” 

the audacity, albedo exclaims internally

“do not tempt me to bind you to a chair until i find a solution, y/n.” he peers menacingly into you in a futile attempt to guise his fear

fear that you’d be too much for him to control

that he’ll lose you even further

you let out a ‘tsk’ as you take a seat beside the busied alchemist

“why are you even trying so hard?” a mumble escapes your mouth

perhaps he felt responsible

or maybe he does this to avenge sucrose

there might even be a slim possibility of him still loving you

but none of these answers felt genuine enough to reason

“frankly enough, i, too, question why.”

your trip home was awkward

and that’s to say the least

fuming in utter disbelief and rage was your alleged lover, intentionally averting his gaze from you

he was trying so hard not you hit you, the only thing holding him back is that he didn’t want to stoop to your level

you were rather pleased with what had happened and flaunted this

“that went well,” you smile and raised an eyebrow as you eyed childe

“you have no heart at all.” his voice devoid of any emotion aside from anger reaches your ears

at this, you dare laugh amidst the tension in the atmosphere surrounding the both of you

“now, i wouldn’t say that! i did it for you, isn’t that enough to prove i’m just as human as everyone else?” 

“you make me sick.” the harbinger spits

you aren’t too pleased with this 

moving to his side, you pinch his cheeks, “come now, love. a little warning from me won’t kill them!” you attempted to lift the mood but all is in vain as you feel a wet drop trickle down from childe’s cheek to your hand

eyes widening at this. you finally pipe down at wait for his response

he grabs your wrist and yanks it from his face

“don’t you dare come near me every again, you’re the worst person i’ve ever been manipulated by.”

to say that kaeya was disappointed is an understatement

having all this happen and being a captain of the knights of favonius

“what in celestia’s name has gotten into you, y/n?”

oh, he was mad

no ‘baby,’ ‘sweetheart–’ not even ‘snowdrop’

you idly twiddle your thumbs innocently, as if you weren’t about to be charged for attempted murder in a few hours

“i thought it would make you happy.” you admit

facepalming to the highest caliber, kaeya sighs and manages to break a sarcastic smile, finding the entire situation unbelievable

“simply outstanding, l/n.”

uh oh, he used your last name

furrowing your eyebrows, you raise one, “you’ve never called me that, sweetheart.”

kaeya glares at you, “let’s put it like this–i’m trying my absolute best not to knock you out right now.”

“i still don’t see how i did anything wrong.” you cross your arms

the knight chuckles hoarsely

“oh, you will.” he states 

and after that, he goes ahead to the acting grandmaster’s office

once he had found adelinde’s corpse in the vicinity and see how you disposed of her, he felt sick to the stomach

“do you like my gift, dearest?” placing a hand on his stiff shoulder, you look at the mess you made

“why, you-” he grumbled and grits his teeth

and the worst has yet to come

“once i have you behind bars for this, i’ll make sure you repent.” diluc states with his clenched fists

“a simple statement such as ‘it was self defense!’ and it’d be fine.”

even so, if he couldn’t have you put in jail, no way was he going to let you live alongside him any further

“pack your things.” he clenches his jaw and drags you indoors

he didn't feel any love from what you’d done, only the flames of fury engulfed the adeptus

“in what plane if existence did you think what you’d done is flattering?!” the yaksha yelled once you and him got to a secluded room in wangshu inn

“xiao, i wasn’t trying to be mean, she laid her eyes on you-”

“like every other being does! gods, y/n, you’re unfathomable.” xiao rubs his temples

inching closer to the trembling man, you atemtped to massage his throbbing head

your efforts have been dismissed with a swat of xiao’s hand as he growls at you

“don’t touch me, filthy mortal.”

“you make me sound like i killed someone,” you laughed it off which angered him greatly

“you almost did!” he reasoned and you tilted your head, feigning ignorance as if this wasn’t a huge deal

“listen, if you’re not going to act accordingly and attack everyone who even lays their eyes on me, do not try to call out my name,” he turns back to you before disappearing into mists of green and black

“i won’t heed to your call.”

a/n: first post on the blog! decided to show some xiao love and u h angst ehe. sorry for the downer but i haven’t been doing so well and meds don’t do much DDDX

“reckless thing, you are-” the yaksha huffs and ceases his own words as he coughs at your impact on his chest. “how many times have i reminded you to stop running up or down the stairs?” he scowls. you know he means well.

“ah, sorry xiao,” you chuckle, “i’m just excited to see you, is all.” you push yourself off the chest that caught you and peered gleefully at the male. he seems annoyed to the unknowing mortals passing by, but as a person who has spent half their time ‘pestering’ (as he says) the adeptus, you can quickly tell that he was merely relieved and was trying to hide it—although he’d rather deal with karmic debt twice his own than to admit such fondness for you. “thanks by the way.”

xiao diverts his gaze onto the railing of the stairs, “this is the fourth time this week that you’ve gotten yourself into dangerous and careless situations. are you sure you’re keeping an eye out for yourself?” he interrogates you as if he were your guardian, which he might as well be, you nod earnestly at his question.

“don’t worry about me, i’d never dream of leaving you alone.” you giggle. this answer of yours urged the adeptus to cringe and tell you to stop thinking like you’re all important and whatnot, but he knew he’d be lying if he said you weren’t someone he treasures deeply. “i swear on it!” you add.

“hmph, fine.” he begins to walk away, stopping for a second. xiao hesitates to take the next step without a word and decides to leave you with a message,

“if you ever find yourself in trouble, no matter how small or big–if you know that it’ll cause you any harm, call out my name. i’ll be there.”

you appreciated that.

to be fair, xiao did not bring up his concern because of your recent recklessness, but how dim you seem in comparison to how you were before. yes, you still smiled brightly, but the lanterns in the sky easily outshines you. your eyes still held warmth, but warmth that fleeted every now and then if not focused on the adeptus’. he worried that something was gnawing at the back of your mind and causing said recklessness as of current. 

he knows mortals are weak, fragile, and although he does not look down on you too much, he still feels the need to protect you from even the slightest of disturbances, which is what led to his conclusion now; to check up on you.

‘where in teyvat are they?’ xiao furrows his eyebrows in frustration as he knocks on the door to your house for the sixth time.as he reaches out to knock once more, he flinches slightly when the door opens.

what the hell?

“oh! xiao, what are you doing here?” you smile. 

he could see how distressed you are, even from a mile away, he presumes. you look weaker, thinner and definitely worse than three days ago. eyes as dull as a blank canvas that hasn’t been acknowledged by it’s artist for years, limbs as frail as a dried flower’s petals. what in archons happened to you?

“y/n, what in the seven happened? what’s with your weak physique? you clearly haven’t been taking care of yourself.” he moves to grab your arm but you draw it back quickly before he could catch it. he grows more and more irritated as your silence greets his question, left to be unanswered.

“i’m sorry, xiao, but could you leave me be for a while? i’ll visit you soon, i promise!” 

ah, there you go again with your promises.

“why the hell would i leave after seeing you on the brink of fainting? someone has to look out for you if you aren’t going to yourself!” he exclaims as he grows more and more livid by the second. 

you huff in annoyance, “why do you care? you have millions of other people to save, you shouldn’t get distracted by one you can’t do anything about.” 

xiao clicks his tongue in extreme disappointment as he doesn’t seem to get through you. “you don’t get it at all, do you?” 

“you don’t get it either, xiao.”

silence envelops the air between you as you bask in infuriatingly awkward stillness. xiao knows he doesn’t get it, you know you’ll never understand him either. it’s hopeless.

after a few minutes or what felt like a decade, you speak up. 

“..hey, can you accompany me somewhere?” you catch his attention. he raises a brow in skepticism, as it is the middle of the night. “it won’t take long.”

he sighs quietly and nods, nudging his head to silently signal you to lead the way. he might as well accompany you instead of going off on a tangent about how you worry him too much.

you arrive at the windrise tree, the breeze nipping gently at your exposed legs. xiao eyes you from behind and bites his tongue despite his urge to berate you.

you sit down at the base of the windrise tree, letting out a long sigh of relief as you stretch your legs. the adeptus hesitates for a second but ultimately decides to sit down beside you.

this time, he’s the first to break the ice.

“what is your purpose of going here with me?” he doesn’t meet your eyes that snap to him quickly at his question. 

there are multiple reasons as to why you might have wanted to visit windrise, some being that you wanted to take a breather after a heated argument, taking a stroll after an exhausting week or even just needing a fresh scenery for a change. all of these reasons and yet, nothing could have prepared him for the words that came next.

“it could be the last time i’ll see this place again.” you smile fondly, despite the rather depressing statement you had just made. 

the yaksha froze up. ‘last time? are you moving?’

could it be that you’re leaving him? when you said you never dared to even think of it?

perhaps the fatui were after you?

were you in danger?

his mind listed a myriad of possibilities, all of them he wished were not true. he was still trying to wrap his head around what you just said. when you finally take into account his stiffness and silence, you forced out a chuckle. 

“yeah, i’ll be gone by tomorrow.”

he shouldn’t have done what he did next.

“..xiao? are you-”

he cut you off by standing up and glaring at you.

your heart dropped at his gaze.

it was one of the most intimidating but hurtful looks he’d ever made in your presence. his eyes screamed in unsaid fury and his face was etched in borderline offense. looking down. you see both his fists clenched in a tight grip of nothing. his form was trembling in anger, almost making you mistake yourself for one of the millions of demonic figures he rinsed the land of. 

“don’t ever show yourself again.”

noted. and he’s gone.

you stare at your scarred arms and wrists. 

‘it won’t be long now.’

xiao regrets it now, is all.
