Transition goals 😈
“It's one of patriarchy's perfect self-perpetuating cycles: the demonisation of older women ensures we do not wish to identify with or learn from them, so cannot gain any knowledge to prepare us for our own experience of ageing. Instead we turn away from our future selves.”
- Hags, Victoria Smith
When I finally managed to force my pre-transition self to attend a trans meeting at my local queer center, the discussion was lead by a older trans woman in her mid-to-late 60s who worked as a mechanic.
Listening to her helped me realize that I could have a future as a trans person past my 30s, which is something that I desperately needed to hear at the time.
For me the indicator of a safe queer space is actually a confident, knowledgeable trans woman who's well liked by the people there and trusted to give advice to people who are new to the space.
Because queer spaces occasionally get the occasional dissociating "cishet men" who can't figure out why they want to be in the queer space so much, feel a conflicted sense of belonging and connection that they also feel they shouldn't have, and end sitting in the corner only interacting when explicitly included.
Now, if you don't have the confident trans woman around, what'll happen is that the "cishet man" eventually stops showing up, because yeah it's nice to go, but it's also really hard for some reason, and maybe another modded Fallout New Vegas run is easier, actually. Maybe the MMO where everyone calls her the name of her girl avatar is easier. She just can't figure out why.

Writing this down for later…. 🦴
hi!! I love the Harrow rosary you made - I want to do something similar for a cosplay I'm planning and wondered if you could share some tips/more detailed info on how you did it and what you used? How thick was your embroidery thread?
hi!! so for the ones i used oven bake clay (i did off brand sculpy), and took chunks that looked like the right size that i wanted and then rolled them into balls. after going ball mode i squished into the sides of the ball with my fingers to make it kind of square? but i didn’t make it even all around i let it be more indented near the middle (exhibit a)
here’s a top view (exhibit b)
and then i poked through it with an embroidery needle and baked it for the recommend time. after baking i painted them with watered down black brown and yellow acrylic paints, and i kinda just dabbed it on with my fingers and rubbed it in for the lightly weathered look.
for the thread i used 2 strands of standard dmc embroidery thread and i didnt tie knots between each bead bc thats hard. i used the same needle that i poked the holes with the thread them bc i knew it would fit!
if you have any more questions lmk! i also did a bone corset i don’t remember if i ever posted it tho 🫶🫶🫶
Stealing this for personal use too…
Having a very serious discussion with @val-the-bun and @salora-rainriver and we have concluded that the best possible adaptation of Gideon the Ninth is with Gideon constantly pausing the movie and redirecting the audience's attention away from the plot and towards that girl she has a crush on like Cuzco in the Emperor's New Groove.
Harrow the Ninth meanwhile is best adapted as an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000 with Gideon riffing on Harrow's life.
Goals
My girlfriend told me this once a night out and it's lived rent free in my head since
My best friend is resisting every attempt I make to get her to read these books as she vehemently hates YA novels. As of now, the only ground I’ve gained is her suggesting I compile a one-hour PowerPoint presentation explaining Gideon-Nona.
I feel OP’s pain here. This task is insurmountable. I am undone.
My sister in Jod, you ask the impossible 💀
I love folks asking for no spoilers for the rest of Gideon the Ninth after they've read it. "Please no spoilers" my sibling in Jod, I even if I laid the rest of the plot out in bullet points for you step by step in an annotated diagram there is no way I could prepare you for what was happening. I could tell you point blank what happens to each and every character in the series and you'd still read the books and go "what the fuck". Tamsyn Muir made a spoiler proof trilogy. It's like the matrix. You cannot know what happens in future books. To be frank even if you read them it's pretty much uncertain you know what happens in future books. I want the next one right now.
Saving this for research purposes 🤣
Tamsyn Muir's synopsis of her novel, "Gideon the Ninth"
Never underestimate the combined power of two traumatized punks who are heavily into the DIY side of things!
He implies she's worth building something new with, next thing we know he's wearing a more revealing outfit with her signature X doodled all over his body. Good for him!
Also, between this scene and the moment they show up in battle, they've apparently had the time to: - turn her entire lab/hideout into a blimp - cover the whole thing in giant tags of the firelights symbol, her cloud tatoos, and more - rebuild pow pow and fishbones, which were very much broken in act 2 - rally the firelights - cut and dye her hair - crop his top - pierce his ears - sew her a shark hoodie - cover her entire body in crayon drawings - accessorize their outfits - again, turn her lair, a giant airshaft, into a functional blimp
Maybe Ambessa gave her entire army the week off before battle. Maybe Jinx and Ekko were on unfathomable amounts of cocaine. We'll never know
Mood. Not a healthy one, but mood
“i must be faking this for attention” thinks the girl who isn’t even telling anyone about it
For me a lot of the horror lies primarily in the fact that the culture, traditions, and tactics of the nine houses stem almost entirely from the mind of one eccentric depressed nerd with a (literal) vengeful god complex.
Like, John lives in a space station where the walls are coated floor to ceiling in the corpses of people who have died serving him over the span of 10,000 years, one of his houses is a literal army of cloned child soldiers sent to the frontlines like a slaughterhouse conveyer belt, and the entire toxic necro/cav dynamic is based entirely around him being unable to trust his closest friends to stay by his side without emotional manipulation.
This entire universe is built on the hypothetical what-if of what would happen if someone was allowed to reshape the universe to their liking at the expense of everyone else, and that someone happened to be terminally online.
It’s like when authors jokingly say they’re terrible people for what they put their characters through but in this case, John’s fanfic is real. It’s like if Paul Atreides had a Tumblr account.
For me, I guess, the locked tomb is really superficially a good story and has lots of aspects that are good in isolation and appeal to a wide variety of queer readers but I think this series would have been better and more satisfying if Ms Muir had leaned more into the gothic and away from the internet humor. In my mind there’s no reason why each House wouldn’t be entrenched so deeply in things we consider taboo and repulsive that it’s unpalatable to most readers. Instead it’s like if Homestuck 2 was good
Disaster enby (they/them) hoarding queer art and discourse for my personal entertainment and education. Enjoyer of all things body-horror, necromantic, punk, unseelie , etc.
