Some of my favourite media rn are The Raven Cycle, The Dreamer trilogy and also the Revolutionary Girl Utena anime and I came to the conclusion that I just really love media that bases it magic system and worldbuilding and general storytelling on the characters and their development. Like, the magic most of the time doesn't really make any sense (or only if you don't pay attention) and sometimes random new things will just happen, except it's actually not that random, it's just that the character needed to be in a specific situation and/or make a specific decision, and so they were put in that situation, or it was for symbolism. Like, I have so much respect for authors that put a lot of effort and thought intomaking the worldbuilding or magic make sense and all, but personally i love stories for the characters, and I can't care less for stories with great magic systems that don't mean anything because the characters only exist for the exposition. Like, I love love love thinking back to when some teens went into a cave and made a bunch of animal skeletons come to life and then contemplating how they came out of the cave changed as people and we never talk about the skeletons again and it never happens again (TRC), or how some teens were dueling with swords on top of a tower in the backyard of their school and then some teens just drove cars around the duel (RGU) and contemplating on the symbolism of the scene.

I don't know if this makes sense but these are peak character driven storylines to me. I eat them up and dream about them when I finally manage to go to sleep.

If anyone knows any more stories told like this please comment I need more

Ronan Lynch, believing himself to be the worst evil in the world, constantly meeting and seeing worser evils (Kavinsky, the Demon, the actual devil) and having to come to terms with the fact that maybe he’s not so bad

Yes of course if I had tons of money and lived in the middle of Virginia I’d buy an abandoned factory and fill it with a model of the town I live in and mint plants and all of the little trinkets and supernatural objects I’ve collected over the years and all my closest friends. What else?

Obviously it’s a general rule in fiction that a character cannot be who you first believe they are, but trc just takes it to a whole other level. By the end of The Raven King, every single character is so drastically different from how they were in The Raven Boys, partially because of their own development, but also because of how the perspectives are divvied out between books so neatly that you get basically an entire character study in each one alongside the overall plot. Everytime I reread it I’m so off-put by the first book because of how differently they used to act and think, even if it the timeline is only a few months. Maggie Stiefvater please never die

My favorite plot twist in trc was Ronan being an absolute fucking loser. Like wdym the stoic spontaneous bad boy listens to EDM and wants to be a farmer??? And people are SCARED of him??? Please.

Adam was constantly saying “I’m employed what does this mean” whenever Gansey and Ronan did some crazy shit while he was at work

I love the raven cycle because it’s a heart wrenching exploration of love and loss and bonds beyond friendship and then the average Ronan subplot is him doing copious amounts of drugs in a car belonging to a boy who he’s got a criminally insane homoerotic rivalry with

i'm gonna have myself a Ronan Lynch hot girl summer (dreaming up nightmare creatures, being hunted by a hitman, looking for a sentient forest that disappeared, realizing i'm in love with the guy who sacrificed himself to that sentient forest, getting absolutely wasted with my enemy who is in love with me, saving my brother who was kidnapped because i didn't go to said enemy's party)
