Structure - Blog Posts

Personally I like to take a character and combine 19th century and modern day advice.

The character is given every chance to improve, every chance to grow and learn but they ignore it stubbornly in favor of following their own path. This ultimately leads them down a hole they can’t climb out of, their ambitions and goals blind them to a point where they don’t even realize it.

Where I got the idea from is a story structure called the tragic plot embryo. This whole thing is what I’m using for my story In the Grey actually. If you want to see the tragic plot embryo and how I use it you can just hit me up or google it 😊

Every 21st century piece of writing advice: Make us CARE about the character from page 1! Make us empathize with them! Make them interesting and different but still relatable and likable!

Every piece of classic literature: Hi. It's me. The bland everyman whose only purpose is to tell you this story. I have no actual personality. Here's the story of the time I encountered the worst people I ever met in my life. But first, ten pages of description about the place in which I met them.

The Benefits of Civil Engineering Failures

The Benefits Of Civil Engineering Failures

Structural complications, disasters, and failures in general are inevitable in the world of engineering, and have occurred countless times since the development of the modern world. Though a failed project may seem like backtracking, there is perhaps no better field to benefit from the phrase “learn from your mistakes.”

When a building falls, a dam breaks, or a bridge deteriorates sooner than expected, the first step a successful civil engineer takes is going back and reviewing the blueprints, making note of any area where they may have miscalculated or misjudged. Looking back on some of the most infamous civil engineering failures throughout history, the projects that followed them almost always took note of why their precedents fizzled.

Most recently, The Oroville Dam in California experienced structural difficulties after going through heavy storms this past February. A hole in the dam opened up, causing water levels to rise tremendously. Almost 200,000 people were forced to leave their homes to avoid danger. However, thanks to the quick thinking of those in charge, the water levels were dropped before the storms hit in anticipation, leading to much lower levels of flooding.

What’s important to take away from this incident is the fact that much of our country’s structures are now outdated, most having been made in the early 20th century. Engineers now have the opportunity to take a step back and look at the main causes for the Oroville Dam’s failure. What materials can be used to repair and prevent the dam from experiencing another crisis? A question all will be asking, thus changing the way engineers look at dams in the future.

For example, in between the years of 1907 and 1916, the Quebec Bridge underwent several updates before finally being deemed safe. Upon its first completion, the bridge collapsed, killing 86 workers and calling for an overhaul. The second bridge, though much stronger, collapsed again, killing another 13. After their third attempt, engineers chose to use nickel alloy rather than steel, which proved to be the safest, most sound option.

Whenever a structure fails, whether it be a building, dam, or bridge for whatever reason, these should be taken as opportunities for innovation. The reasons for why they were unsuccessful give engineers the chance to reassess the structures, and potentially develop newer, safer means of maintaining their stability.

Structuring Your Fight Scene

Structuring Your Fight Scene

adapted from <Writer's Craft> by Rayne Hall

Suspense

Show your characters gearing up, readying themselves.

The pace is slow, the suspense is high (use suspense techniques)

Provide information about terrain, numbers, equipment, weapons, weather.

May have dialogue as the opponents taunt each other, hurl accusations, or make one final effort to avoid the slaughter.

Don't start too early - we don't need to see the hero getting out of bed, taking a shower and having tea.

2. Start

Fighters get into fight stance: knees slightly bent, one leg forward, abdominal muscles tensing, body turned diagonally, weapons at the ready.

Each side will usually try to be the first to strike, as this will give them advantage.

The movements in this section need to be specific and technically correct.

3. Action

This section may be quick or prolonged. If prolonged, no blow-by-blow descriptions are needed.

Focus on the overall direction of the fight

Make use of the location to make characters jump, leap, duck, hide, fall, etc.

Mention sounds of weapons

4. Surprise

Something unexpected happens: building catches fire, a downpour, relief force arrives, staircase collapses, bullet smashes into the only lightbulb and everything goes dark, hero losses his weapon, etc.

Add excitement, raise the stakes.

5. Climax

Both sides are tired and wounded

The hero is close to giving up, but is revived with passion

Move to the terrain's most dangerous spot: narrow swining rope-bridge, a roof-edge, sinking ship, etc.

Don't rush the climax! Hold the tension

6. Aftermath

The fight is over: bes buddies lying dead, bandaging, reverberating pain, etc.

Use sense of sight and smell

The hero may experience nausea, shaking, tearfulness or get sexually horny

Fight scene length

Historical/adventure/fantasy: 700-1000w

Romance: 400-700w

Fellow Co-Op Shared Her Experience Testing Curiosity Rover's Drill, Morpheous Tested Thrusters And Students

Fellow Co-Op shared her experience testing Curiosity Rover's drill, Morpheous tested thrusters and students toured space structure labs.

Jackelynne Silva-Martinez  presented "Behind the Scenes on the Verification and Validation (V&V) Tests of the Curiosity Rover's Robotic Arm." The Curiosity rover has been gathering data on Mars since August 2012. Jacky is a mechanical engineer who was a test operator for the MSL robotic arm during its V&V surface tests for sample acquisition, processing and handling. She tested with equipment which are a replica of the drill and the Collection and Handling for In situ Martian Rock Analysis (CHIMRA).

Fellow Co-Op Shared Her Experience Testing Curiosity Rover's Drill, Morpheous Tested Thrusters And Students

Engineering Structures (ES) students hosted a presentation and tour of labs that they work in for fellow Co-Ops and interns. These ES students are working on testing materials that cover Orion, untangling vibrations the Space Launch System experiences during tests and analyzing samples after the first Orion test.

ES had lab with electron microscopes, impact test tools and a 3D printing lab. From the outside the ES building looks like a bunch of office spaces but nested in the inside are many we equipped labs.

Morpheus is a planetary lander capable of taking off vertically. This week Morpheus' positioning thrusters were tested to capture footage for Engineering Propulsion. The test happened outside and we had to stay in the lab to remotely operate the test. Co-Op Michael O'Donnell is working on Morpheus preparing it's fuel chambers for thermo testing.

"Union Station Primaries" , 20" X 16" Oil On Wood.

"Union Station Primaries" , 20" x 16" oil on wood.

This painting marks one of my early experiments with adding primary colors in a captivatingly abstract way to my art. The vibrant hues blur the line between realism and abstraction, all while reflecting the essence of the station's structure. And ill be honest, I wanted to add the primary colours because I like them🥳😌

Finch West Station # 1, 11" x 14" Oil on Wood. Toronto Canada subway station.

The sign over the platform with the three primary colour shapes were purposely abstracted and added to the painting. I often add small details to a lot of my paintings with things that interest me. The primary colours are meant to show how to further simplify a concept down to a simplified colour palette.

Composition #4, hand carved woodcut print of Mount Pleasant train station in Canada. These are quite fun and relaxing to make even though its less forgiving than painting - if a mistake is made during the carving process you can't exactly fix it :P. The fact that I had no issues with the carving is great :D.

The woodcut is limited edition printed by hand on beautiful paper with a mixture of cotton and paper pulp made in France(yes I am nerding out about paper). Each print is numbered and signed by me and comes with a written thank you note :D.

The print is 20.5 cm x 15.5 cm , 8 inch x 6 inch. Paper is 24 cm x 18 cm, 9.5 inch x 7 inch
