Experience Tumblr Like Never Before
Always you
Summary: Walking away is always the hardest thing to do, but when things are complicated it’s even harder.
The nightclub was loud—too loud. The bass thrummed in Y/N’s chest, the kind of relentless rhythm that made it impossible to think. Which, tonight, was exactly the point.
She’d spent months convincing herself that she was done. Done with the chaos, the hurt, the constant push and pull of being tied to Max Verstappen. Moving on had felt like the only way to survive. So here she was, dancing with someone whose name she didn’t even care to learn, pretending her heart wasn’t stitched together with the threads of a man who wasn’t even hers.
But then, like clockwork, he appeared.
She didn’t notice him at first, too caught up in the swirl of music and alcohol. It wasn’t until she felt that familiar pull, the weight of his gaze cutting through the crowd, that her body stiffened.
Max was here.
She turned, and there he was, standing at the edge of the dance floor like a shadow she couldn’t outrun. His hair was messy, his jaw tight, and his piercing blue eyes locked on hers.
“Of course,” she muttered under her breath, untangling herself from her dance partner.
He didn’t wait for her to come to him; Max never waited. He crossed the distance between them in long, determined strides, the crowd parting like they could feel the storm brewing around him.
“What are you doing here?” she demanded as soon as he was close enough to hear her over the music.
“I could ask you the same thing,” he shot back, his voice low but laced with irritation.
Her fists clenched at her sides. “Don’t do this, Max. Not tonight.”
But he didn’t back down. He never did. “You don’t belong here with him.”
She laughed, a bitter sound that barely masked the hurt bubbling beneath the surface. “And where do I belong, Max? With you? Because last I checked, that never worked out, did it?”
His jaw tightened, but he didn’t say anything. That silence was answer enough.
She stepped closer, her voice shaking now—not with fear, but with anger. “Every time I try to move on, you show up like this, like you can’t stand the idea of me being happy without you. But you’re never ready to give me what I need, are you?”
“Y/N—”
“No,” she cut him off, her eyes burning with unshed tears. “You don’t get to do this anymore. You don’t get to walk into my life whenever it suits you, mess everything up, and then leave me to pick up the pieces.”
He ran a hand through his hair, his frustration evident. “You think this is easy for me? You think I don’t hate myself for not being able to let you go?”
“Then don’t,” she whispered, her voice breaking. “But if you’re going to stay, then stay. Stop making me feel like I’m not enough for you to fight for.”
Max stared at her, his chest rising and falling with uneven breaths. For the first time, he looked lost, like he didn’t have an answer.
And that was the moment she realized she couldn’t keep waiting for him to figure it out.
“I deserve more than this, Max,” she said, stepping back. “I deserve someone who knows what they want, and I can’t keep letting you take that from me.”
His hand reached for hers, but she pulled away, shaking her head.
“Goodbye, Max.”
She turned and walked away, her heart shattering with every step. But for the first time, she wasn’t looking back. And for the first time it wasn’t always about him.
