Noah and Cain or “The roots of Dinosaur’s story”

(Early storyboard art by David Krentz)

They’re actually the prototypes of Aladar and Kron. Originally Dinosaur’s story was much more religion related. According to this Noah was an prophet-like Iguanodon with divination abilities and was wandering with his grandparents and a lemur named Adam. He was here an misfit because of his visions and seemingly more hot-headed and temperamental, so less that typical “nice guy type” than his later counterpart. Cain was almost the same as Kron, a stubborn, threatening, possessive and kinda tyrant-type leader. However, the concept was scrapped.

As it’s known, Aladar was raised by the lemurs, that’s why his way of thinking is completely different from the other dinosaurs. But their influence is not limited to his way of thinking. He shows some lemur-like behavioral traits as well during the movie. Originally the filmmakers wanted him to behave and move more like a lemur, but they rejected the idea with the exception of some brief movements.

That sassy tail swish which Aladar shows to Kron was actually intended to be one of them, it’s the same gesture, which was made by both Plio and Yar in the beginning of the movie.

Upon looking into it more, Gronzi was the name of the original antagonist of the early concept for Dinosaur. Gronzi was originally a Tyrannosaurus. Had the name Gronzi stayed, it would have been the only character outside of Suri that survived into the final product.

I think it would have been pretty cool if they kept the carnotaurs as characters rather than villainous "sharp tooth" like monsters.

Kron, though he fills the role of an antagonist, wasn’t intended to be a villain, as his supervising animator, Eamonn Butler has stated.

“What interested me about Kron was that I didn’t see him as a villain at all. (…)

I kind of saw him as a fallen hero. I found anchors for the character that I could envision. Here’s a guy who’s lived in fear most of his life: always on the run, living in fear of terrifying creatures, being forced out of his home, always moving. What would you turn into? Kron has had to become tough to survive.

He is also the biggest, strongest, best-looking guy in the herd - the alpha male - but it’s a constant struggle for leadership, because he’s always being challenged for that position. So not only does he face threat from the external predators, he’s facing a constant challenge to his position from withing the Herd.

So here’s a guy who lives in a very hostile environment. Everywhere he goes there’s a challenge and a threat. So I gave him this determination. If he has to get the Herd somewhere he’s gotta get them there no matter what - even if that means sacrificing some of the weak. I thought that made him strong but fallible. To me that was heroic in its own way.”

Yiiihhh

Watched Dinosaur last night after sooooo long, so I basically went on a mini field trip of nostalgia–and then decided to try sketching him.  Last time I did, I was around… 6 or 7.  If my younger self could see this, she’d freak out so bad.

A Gif From Some Animation Test Sample Frames Shared By Mark Anthony Austin, The Supervising Character

A gif from some animation test sample frames shared by Mark Anthony Austin, the supervising character animator of Aladar and Aladar’s mom:

“This was the test that landed me the lead on the hero character in #Disney “Dinosaur”. They loved the weight and natural feel. I based it upon a dust bath behavior typical of horses. Trouble was to achieve weight and scale you need hundreds of frames of film when the average shot length is 3 feet of film or 72 frames only.”

Various dinosaurs designed by artist Ricardo Delgado for Disney’s DINOSAUR (2000, Dir. Ralph Zondag & Eric Leighton). Delgado is a prolific film and comic book artist who has worked on over 50 film and television projects but is perhaps best known by many as the creator of the two time Eisner Award winning dinosaur comic book series AGE OF REPTILES (1993 - Present).

Most of the art seen here was done between 1994 and 1996. One of the hallmarks of Delgado’s dinosaurs is how he bases their color schemes off of living animals that he feels occupy the same evolutionary niche that a particular dinosaur might have. Ergo you have a giraffe-like Amargasaurus, a Velociraptor with cheetah spots and zebra striped hadrosaurs. It’s also worth noting how palentologicaly progressive many of Delgado’s designs are. Take note of both the feathers on his Stygimoloch and the quills on his baby Stegosaurus.
