 Isaac Newton is perhaps the greatest scientist who ever lived. In a world obsessed with witchcraft and sorcery, he dared to write down the universal laws of the heavens and apply a new mathematics he invented to study forces, called the calculus. As physicist Steven Weinberg has written, “It is with Isaac Newton that the modern dream of a final theory really begins.” In its time, it was considered to be the theory of everything—that is, the theory that described all motion.

 Before Newton, the church taught that there were two kinds of laws. The first were the laws found on Earth, which were corrupted by the sin of mortals. The second were the pure, perfect, and harmonious laws of the heavens.

 The essence of Newton’s idea was to propose a unified theory that encompassed the heavens and the Earth.

 If a cannonball is fired from a mountaintop, it goes a certain distance before hitting the ground. But if you fire the cannonball at increasing velocities, it travels farther and farther before coming back to Earth, until it eventually completely circles the Earth and returns to the mountaintop. He concluded that the natural law that governs apples and cannonballs, gravity, also grips the moon in its orbit around the Earth. Terrestrial and heavenly physics were the same.

 The way he accomplished this was to introduce the concept of forces. Objects moved because they were pulled or pushed by forces that were universal and could be measured precisely and mathematically. (Previously, some theologians thought that objects moved because of desires, so that objects fell because they yearned to be united with the Earth.

 Thus, Newton introduced the key concept of unification.

 In 1682, a sensational event happened that changed the course of history. A blazing comet sailed over London. Everyone, from kings and queens to beggars, was buzzing with the news. Where did it come from? Where was it going? What did it portend?

 One man who took an interest in this comet was astronomer Edmond Halley. He took a trip to Cambridge to meet the famous Isaac Newton, already well-known for his theory of light. (By shining sunlight through a glass prism, Newton showed that white light separated into all the colors of the rainbow, thereby demonstrating that white light is actually a composite color. He also invented a new type of telescope that used reflecting mirrors rather than lenses.) When Halley asked Newton about the comet that everyone was talking about, he was shocked to hear that Newton could show that comets moved in ellipses around the sun and that he could even predict their trajectory using his own theory of gravity. In fact, he was tracking them with the telescope he invented, and they moved just as he predicted.

 Halley was stunned. He immediately realized that he was witnessing a landmark in science and volunteered to pay for the printing costs of what would eventually become one of the greatest masterpieces in all science, Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy, or simply Principia.  Furthermore, Halley, realizing that Newton was predicting that comets could return at regular intervals, calculated that the comet of 1682 would return in 1758. (Halley’s comet sailed over Europe on Christmas Day, 1758, as predicted, helping to seal Newton’s and Halley’s reputations posthumously.)  Newton’s theory of motion and gravitation stands as one of the greatest achievements of the human mind, a single principle unifying the known laws of motion.

 Even today, it is the laws of Newton that allow NASA engineers to guide our space probes across the solar system.

O Conto de Fadas de Uma Assassina |“Trono de Vidro”, Sarah J. Maas.

Fazer parte de um fandom proporciona umas das formas mais incansáveis de panfletar alguma coisa, e não poderia ser diferente no meio bookstan. Após muita indicação, e vários spoilers jogados na timeline do twitter, resolvi dar uma chance a saga, e iniciei uma das leituras mais empolgante da minha vida literária - está entre as melhores do ano, sem dúvida. O livro da autora norte americana, Sarah J. Maas, narra a trajetória de luta e conquista da famosa assassina do Reino de Adarlan: Celaena Sardothien.  

“Numa terra em que a magia foi banida e em que o rei governa com mão de ferro, uma assassina é chamada ao castelo. Ela vai, não para matar o rei, mas para conquistara sua própria liberdade. Se derrotar os vinte e três oponentes em competição, será libertada da prisão para servir a Coroa com o estatuto de campeão do rei - o assassino do rei. O seu nome é Celaena Sardothien. O príncipe herdeiro vai provocá-la. O capitão da Guarda vai protegê-la. Mas um halo maléfico vagueia no castelo de vidro - e está lá para matar. Quando os seus concorrentes começam a morrer um a um, a luta de Celaena pela liberdade torna-se numa luta pela sobrevivência e numa jornada inesperada para expor um mal antes de que este destrua o seu mundo.” 

Apesar de ser um nome bastante conhecido no meio literário jovem atual – sua série anterior “Corte de Espinhos e Rosas” também carrega um imenso sucesso -, minha distância da Sarah se mantinha por puro receio de iniciar uma história de fantasia que demandaria um bom tempo – ao todo, são 9 livros, sendo o mais curto o primeiro. Mesmo assim, arrisquei, e ainda não sei o que me atingiu.  

Após uma traição que culminou em sua captura, Celaena se vê lutando para sobreviver nas Minas de Sal de Endovier, lugar de extremo horror. A chance de liberdade surge quando uma proposta é apresentada a ela: tornar-se campeã do Príncipe no torneiro promovido pelo rei. Caso vença, após o período de servidão ao reino, sua liberdade será concedida. Celaena possuiu feridas que vão muito além das físicas, e o rei para quem ela caminha, habita seus piores pesadelos.  

Acostumada a ser conduzida a todos os lugares em grilhões e com espadas apontadas para si, ela não demonstra o pesar que a domina por tudo que a levou até o momento da escolta, e entende o que a aguarda, caso seja campeã. Seu passado a impede de seguir esse caminho com orgulho, mas a sobrevivência e liberdade farão seu trabalho. Nessa jornada, são inseridos dois dos personagens mais importantes da saga que, junto com a Celaena, são os responsáveis por fecharem as pontas que serão abertas ao longo da história: Dorian Havilliard e Chaol Westfall.  

Dorian Havilliard, Príncipe de Adarlan, entende o título que carrega, mas a futilidade e hipocrisia da corte faz com que ele desenvolva meios de se manter longe dela. Sua atitude despreocupada esconde sua perspicácia e garante sua sobrevivência num ambiente onde jogos de poder estão ativos o tempo todo. O campeonato promovido pelo pai torna-se uma grande oportunidade de demonstrar o quanto ele pode fazer. Longe do ambiente onde usa sua máscara de desdém, mantem uma mente extraordinária, sem deixar de lado sua personalidade extremamente carismática. É sensato, mas se priva de muita coisa por conta da autoridade exercida pelo pai, até mesmo longe do reino. Nesse tempo, busca por algo que possa preencher seu tempo de maneira realmente interessante, a chegada da Celaena torna isso possível.

Chaol Westfall é o chefe da guarda e melhor amigo do Príncipe. Sua lealdade pelo Dorian é inquestionável, e é bom que quem for ler a história mantenha isso em mente – nada estará entre os dois! Compreender isso fará com que muitas atitudes tidas como equívocas sejam reconsideradas. Dono de um passado fechado, e uma personalidade cautelosa, mas superprotetora, Chaol se surpreenderá com a forma que Celaena entrará em sua vida. Por saber que ela se trata da uma excelente assassina, se manterá em constante alerta com relação ao seu amigo, mas não cuidará do próprio coração.

Com todos em seus devidos lugares, não é impossível imaginar uma interação onde a incrível e orgulhosa Celaena, o belo e charmoso Dorian, e o fechado, mas atraente, Chaol seja repleta de sentimentos intensos. A Sarah foi excelente em mostrar a dinâmica dos três. Ao contrário de outros livros, onde o triângulo chega a ser maçante, ter três personagens interessantes deixa a leitura melhor. O contexto de lutas, treinos e fugas ajuda na construção individual e coletiva de cada um. Sendo o Dorian a mente [ele, com sua paixão pela vida e pelo conhecimento, faz com que Celaena se mantenha sã no meio das artes que tanto gosta – a leitura, principalmente] e o Chaol a força [ele a auxilia na recuperação física necessária para o campeonato, mas fortalece-a também na forma de enfrentar seus medos, sendo o de amar de novo o maior deles], Celaena une o melhor dos dois e é a alma da história.  

Pode parecer algo óbvio, visto que ela é a protagonista, mas são poucas as narrativas que unem tantas qualidades e poderes em uma mocinha sem que a apatia surja. Isso não acontece em TOG, e considero a Celaena uma das melhores protagonistas que conheci. Fugindo de um passado que a leva para momentos de terror e culpa, ela não deixa de lado sua confiança, inteligência, força e, o melhor de tudo, os prazeres da vida (esses, inclusive, rendem ótimos momentos). Toda essa glória não esconde os defeitos, fazendo com que nos identifiquemos com a maior qualidade da Celaena: sua incrível humanidade. Seus vários defeitos surgem ao longo da história, mas até lá, a paixão por ela já estará consolidada.

A leitura dos livros e dinâmica, pois a autora sabe como inserir elementos sem encher linguiça. Após a leitura do primeiro, dei um tempinho para variar, mas quando voltei com “A Lâmina da Assassina” [reunião de contos que narram os acontecimentos anteriores ao primeiro livro da saga], foi impossível largar. Mesmo os mais longos foram facilmente engolidos, e qualquer atividade que fizesse com que eu deixasse o livro de lado, virou um martírio. 

Com a proporção que as ações do primeiro livro vai tomando, é bom se atentar aos detalhes enquanto a história está enxuta, pois quando os segredos começarem a surgir, faltará fôlego para analisar os detalhes. Mesmo existindo um grande mal rondando os personagens, veremos que os maiores vilões são eles mesmos. Seus receios, o autoconhecimento – ou a falta dele -, a vida de quem amamos… essas são coisas que importam e, de certa forma, evidenciam que a morte, mesmo tão próxima, não parece ser nada diante das perdas em vida. Isso moldará os personagens de maneira incrível, e não há coração que aguente as atitudes tomadas tendo tudo isso como guia. Se você vive num mundo onde nunca lhe contaram sobre “Trono de Vidro”, sinta-se impelido a buscar mais, e entre de vez nessa jornada. Valerá a pena.

she’s saying that these healthcare workers or soldiers only have 20 minutes to sleep cause they are in such difficult positions and when they do sleep they’re trying to escape the harsh things they’ve seen. these epiphany’s they are having are comforting.
