I feel like even if it didn't have side effects per say, he would still get addicted to it.

I mean, it's a magical brain device that makes you forget every little bad thing that happened to you. Sure, no trauma, but it also means no growth or development. If that memory gun worked as intended, he would just remain stagnant.
