Falling Into Jupiter

Twenty-five years ago, an object roughly the size of an oven made space history when it plunged into the clouds of Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system. On Dec. 7, 1995, the 750-pound Galileo probe became the first probe to enter the gas giant. Traveling at a blistering speed of 106,000 miles per hour, the probe’s protective heat shield experienced temperatures as hot as the Sun’s surface generated by friction during entry. As the probe parachuted through Jupiter’s dense atmosphere, its science instruments made measurements of the planet’s chemical and physical makeup. The probe collected data for nearly an hour before its signal was lost. Its data was transmitted to Earth via the Galileo spacecraft, an orbiter that carried the probe to Jupiter and stayed within contact during the encounter. Learn more about the mission.

I was talking to my therapist about some anxiety symptoms --- "In my mind, I know I'm going to be perfectly okay, but my body doesn't listen and reacts anyway" --- and she recommended TIPP as strategies to keep in my toolbox of dealing with distress in the moment. I really appreciate having more than one option to try in moments of overwhelm!

If you're feeling overwhelmed by anxiety or other strong emotions, TIPP is a set of techniques that use the body's natural physical responses to bring you back into balance.

TIPP stands for

temperature

intense exercise

paced breathing

progressive muscle relaxation

Temperature:

The body naturally lowers its heart rate in response to cold. If anxiety is making your heart race, try an ice pack, a cool washcloth, or a walk outside in cool weather, and it should help you calm down.

Intense exercise:

Anxiety is typically a symptom of your body going into fight/flight mode. If your body is coursing with nervous energy, burn it off with 10 minutes of jumping jacks, dancing, climbing stairs, or another cardio activity to complete the stress response cycle.

Paced breathing:

Deep, slow breathing from the belly can also help signal the body to come out of fight/flight mode. Try inhaling for a count of four and exhaling for a count of six until you feel more relaxed. (I like to hold the breath for a count of two between each inhale and exhale.)

Progressive muscle relaxation:

If anxiety makes your body tense up, try this. Start by squeezing the muscles in your toes and feet for five seconds, and then intentionally relax them. Move up to the calves, up your legs, and every region of your body to purposefully let go of extra energy.

Movies:

• El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan’s Labyrinth) This is available on Netflix and I’d suggest watching movies with subtitles. If you’re able to, there’s a chrome extension you can download called Language Learning with Nextflix where you can have subtitles in both your native & target language

• I also suggest watching any movie you’re familiar with like if you love Disney movies you should find the Spanish version of them

5 essential tricks for language learners

Speak more often then read or write something.

If you can`t memorize a word or a phrase, a) sing it, b) shout it, c) pronounce it as the rudest swear word in your native language.

Read aloud the articles and essays you really love. In the beginning, our tongue will ache as fuck, but your pronunciation will really get better. Even if there`s no one near to point your mistakes.*

If you see a word with abstract meaning, immediately make a collocation with a “simple” noun. e. g. Instead of learning what “to accustom” means, learn something like “I accustomed myself not to cry because of the high taxes” or “I`ve never been accustomed to working hard and I`m not going to start”

Watch the useless and strange videos on YouTube in your target language. There are many advantages in the crap like “Get Ready With Me” or “What is in my back?” First of all, they all contain almost similar phrases and word collocations. Watch 5 GRWM-videos and you`ll know for sure how to say “Hi, guys!”, “make-up”, “lipstick”, “really good” etc. Secondly, vloggers typically talk as if their audience is full of idiots. They repeat the same phrases dozens of times. And that`s! Don`t hesitate to feel foolish for 5 or 10 minutes straight. Surprisingly, the most unintellectual content will make you more competent and actually intellectual.

Why?

Powerful narrative through image and stage direction. It is the perfect example to talk about artistic direction.

9. Humanity has declined.

Why?

Powerful and creative satire, and it is so freaking funny, I love it.

8. Kaiba.

Why?

Explores interesting topics with such a good technique. We all now that Masaaki Yuassa is a good director.

7. Tha Tatami Galaxi.

Why?

Perfect aesthetic and direction. I wish it was more ambitious when exploring the topic of coming of age tho.

6. Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

Why?

Let me say this: this is the most ambitious, creative, imaginative and effective artistic direction I have EVER seen.

5. Shoujo Kakumei Utena.

Why?

A master class in symbolism. There are so many details, so many possible explanations that I just cannot state what is the actual topic of the show.

4. Kyousogiga.

Why?

A master class in rythm and narrative. THIS is jist MAD but high quality that I can just define it as psychodelic.

3. Haibane Renmei.

Why?

Such a nice critique and deconstruction. The atmosphere is perfect and well executed and the topic is deep and explored with humanity.

2. Serial Experiments Lain.

Why?

Just everything, it is so enigmatic and ambitious and creative and effective in every single aspect, it is just perfect.

1. Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Why?

Creative, ambitious, perfect symbolism, perfect cohesion betwee topics and devises used in the script and the audiovisual narrative…and the best part, it is HUMAN, just HUMAN. So powerful and deep but so natural. I looooove it.
