That same evening, after supper, Draco enters the Slytherin common room, black robes billowing behind him in a rather impressive Snape impersonation.
"Snake meeting in the den!" Shouts his sonorused voice.
One by one all Slytherin students file into the common room. Draco waits, brooding in a corner, arms crossed. When they are all accounted for, Draco speaks.
"Flint! Why did you tell Professor Granger about the ring?"
"I thought..."
"Yes, in the future, please refrain from thinking. All of you."
The students lower their gazes.
"Your job is to talk about me when Professor Granger can hear you, not tell her I want to marry her! I have to at least take her on one date first!"
A seventh year raises her hand, Draco nods.
"We talked about how handsome you are, she was sitting beside us on the Quidditch stands when you were acting as referee. She ogled you after we said your arse looked good."
"Thank you, Avery. See? That's what I want from you! No more mistakes."
God I love Draco Malfoy.
Specifically the fanfiction one. The one who has been changing his views after 4th year, during 6th or 7th year, even the one who started to change after the war.
The endearingly pathetic one who has to take a LOT of time to stand up to his father or to break himself down. The one who has been rebellious from the school years as soon as he realized his bigotry. The soft and vulnerable one, both with the sneer and without it (looking at most 8th year and Post War pieces), although Draco without sneer and sarcasm is not entire Draco to me. The dark and morally grey and grating but still good to his core (looking at The Fallout, Manacled, Happy pills (i think it’s the name?), Rights and Wrongs series). Absolutely vile and dark and unhinged but still good and not entirely evil (Breath Mints/Battle Scars, For your protection). There are so many more but these are the ones I can name of the top off my head.
I love his character, I sympathize with his character. I still want to cry about how much more JK could have done with him in the books. I’m still angry about the deleted wand throwing scene. Give me fucking something, I will go for any crumbs you give me.
The only reasons why i’m not displeased with the supposed HBO reboot, which we haven’t heard about in a long while (which is usually not a good thing), is because i hope they would be able to DO something GOOD about him.
This would have been such a tremendous redemption arc. Instead he turned out mediocre and I guess that’s fine when you think “Well, that’s kind of realistic”. But I done want this from Draco fucking Malfoy character. Literally anyone but him.
God, i’m so thankful to fanfiction. This is my canon and you can’t change my mind.
