Vespertines: an interactive fiction

Vespertines is an urban fantasy/romance interactive fiction about demons and found family. You play as a human working at a bar for demons, getting to know your customers and collecting their stories.

The game is currently in development. It is developed in Twine and will be released episodically. A demo will be available mid 2022 on itch.io. 

Vespertines is recommended for mature audiences. Content warnings are available below and at the start of the game.

On the run from your past, you find yourself in a new city with no plan and nowhere to go. A mysterious individual called Ashheart appears before you and refers you to a bar called ‘Vespertines’. You expect the usual; cleaning up spills and handling drunk customers. What you do not expect is for your new boss to be a horned demon known as Gremory who collects stories as payment instead of money.

A dark fantasy story with a mix of modern, medieval, and futuristic elements. Two siblings, an angel and demon, on a path of revenge.

In the world of Eldris, the recent infestation of binders and lifelines grows. They are eldritch entities made of the same essence as the living. Despite the commonality, it is clear that they do not belong in this world, and nobody knows where they come from. What is clear is that they are on the hunt for mortals who will become the ideal vessel for storing essence, and they’ll do whatever it takes to survive while on their conquest.

You and your brother, Daemin, are another anomaly in this world. The day you woke up in this strange land was the same day you were quick to learn of your newfound power. While you are an endless basin of life, your brother is a vacuum of death. He is in a constant state of decay, and he needs essence to live. However, with a surplus of essence, he can amass power beyond what a demon like himself should be capable of. The two of you make a dangerous pair, seeing as how you’re a limitless generator of essence and he can become a dangerous user when he has a lot of it. Will that combination of power go to your head?

With a feeling you’ve lost something other than bits of your memories, you and your brother embark on a mission. You both seek to find out where you are, what happened to you, and how to get back on track with achieving your primary goal: getting revenge.

But be careful, angel of Aether. There are many eyes aimed at you and your brother since your awakening, and mortal affairs tend sink anyone and everyone in like quicksand.

Today’s the day!! Thank you all for your patience. I’m beyond excited to share the first demo of No Haven in Hallow Cove!

Please keep in mind that this is very much still a first draft, and subject to change. I welcome and appreciate any feedback you can offer. Currently I have two options for feedback: comments on the itchio page and messages here.  I can’t promise that suggestions will be implemented but I can promise that they will be read, appreciated, and considered. If you see any coding issues like bugs or inconsistencies, please either screenshot or send me the direct text so I can fix it.

The romance system in particular I would love feedback on. Romance styles are so unique to the individual, and I want to make sure I’m incorporating other peoples experiences as well as my own. If there are dialogue options you would have wanted, changes in inner thoughts, alternatives to the current romance options, please let me know! Thank you in advance.

The fact that you are taking the time to read it at all means a lot to me, so thank you.

Also, this book features many adult themes and content that may be disturbing or triggering. I’m not including a detailed list of triggers as it would spoil major plot points so instead I will ask that you please exercise caution and prioritize your own mental health first. A villain that you’ve met multiple times within your years of crime-fighting. Sharp intelligence being hidden behind cocky smiles and flirtatious quips— that can be quite as disarming as the weapons they carry— but one must never lose their senses around them: it may be the last thing you ever do. You may not like calling on them for help but you need everyone you can get in this fight.

Harry/Harley Adler - The Roommate [M/F]

A semblance of normalcy in your otherwise hectic life— with a soap opera addiction and cookie obsession— they’ve been one of the only bright spots you’ve able to look forward to. Especially since they seem to have no idea of who you used to be; small blessings, you suppose. Their horrible puns, sarcastic retorts, and caffeine fueled rants, are something that you’ve cherished greatly.

“I see everything, dearest one, I promise you salvation if you heed my words. There’s nothing I wouldn’t do to protect you. Nothing I wouldn’t do to keep you.”

The voice you’ve been hearing within your head for the last two years. You don’t know where it’s from— or why it appeared— but you get the feeling that there is more to it than you simply hearing things. Visions— or nightmares— coming to you while you sleep adding to that conclusion; a gentle touch turning fiery as you awaken with a gasp. You just don’t know what to do with the burning sensation they awaken within you.

Lumintoile Academia is a prep school in the city of Delphinium that screams prestigiousness and elitism among its students. You happen to be a student there in your final year of Highschool, and trying to graduate with the cleanest slate you can ever manage. Well, too bad that’s thrown out of the window after meeting the Student Council. Hello, to your future in juvenile detention!

Somehow, you’re now dragged into this weird mess straight out of a fantasy novel. Magic? Monsters? Spirits? Fae? Demons? The Council has to be joking. No way are those things real, right? Calm, cold, quiet, people like her are known to hide and say so much more under the surface. Is that blood and petals in her coughs?

Despite the giddy and somewhat airheadedness in the way she appears, there is a side you've yet to see from her. And you don't know if you can handle it.

The bad boy of the Student Council, an irony for being part of a paragon of the Lumintoile perfect student. A smug demeanor, and known to tease, any annoyance towards him is usually gone by sweet words and a smile. Open with everything in his life, even the unnecessary bits, is he as transparent as he seems?

Someone from outside of Lumintoile. Not much is known about him, but the fact that Fleur's seen with him all the time outside of school. He doesn't look like anyone you've seen around the neighborhood. With an attention span that is always drifting off somewhere and with a hyperactive attitude, no wonder Fleur sticks with him. Maybe he's some foreigner friend visiting, or maybe something more sinister is afoot.

A new friend you met through Zephyrine. She's an unusual one from the next classroom over. Head stuck in fantasy books, she longs for something well... magical to happen in her life. Though it's a bit alarming at how calm she is about it all. It could be a façade, for all you know.

Murphy’s twin brother and the lesser known brother. Just as quiet as his older sister, and often found in the library either reading or playing chess with Fleur.

The butler of the Heartstein family. He’s an aloof and frank man, always seen picking up and dropping off the Heartsteins via limo.

Cooper’s older sister. She drops by every now and then to check up on him. Charming and just as mysterious as her brother.

Residents of Oak Street

This is mostly like an interest check rather than a fully developed introduction post. So the details are subject to change <3

THE STORY

It all started in the summer of 2022, when a small asteroid crashed in a secluded part of the woods. The asteroid itself didn’t pose a threat. In fact, it was fairly small in size and had shrunk even more during its fall. It’s what came with it that changed the lives of the city residents forever.

A virus.

A virus that had peculiar effects on people. A painful transition period. Some survived. And were left to figure out how to get accustomed to their new abilities. Others were not so lucky. When the transition became too painful to handle, death claimed them. Only a few people knew the true nature of the virus. The rest of the city only ever knew of it as a horrible contagious disease. Thus, the city went into lockdown for a couple of years. Until the scientists found a cure and the deaths started to decrease.

Of course, it isn’t really that simple. After all, we never really know what happened behind closed doors. For one, there are the effects that the virus left behind.

Such as…

…being able to read minds, people’s senses becoming unnaturally developed, abnormally fast healing, super strength, controlling objects without touching them…

Things like that…
