Impeachy

Image ID: A panel from Dungeon Meshi, in which Laios, a human in armor, is explaining something to Marcille, an elven mage. The text has been edited to read as follows: "It's tax season in the US. A lot of people think the deadline for doing your taxes is April 18th. But that's not true. It's April 15th." The final panel has Marcille looking at Laios with a shocked/dead look on her face. I suppose one of the reasons why I am so utterly obsessed with Kim Dokja is because he is the type of man you only see in a lifetime. He's like a rare gem of a star, glinting for one moment and turning to dust in the other. He's a person who lives in-between sentences, who haunts the narrative and never actually appears in the story, only the ghost of him held together by his companion's memories. He is barely found at the beginning, and at the end he ceases to exist as "himself", only appearing briefly for one regression turn. It's horrible to learn to know him as the character "Kim Dokja", only for it to fade into some sort of legend, someone unreachable, a story told and retold ad infinitum, until it becomes a memory that scratches at your brain, that drives you mad with grief. Kim Dokja, your salvation is cruel indeed. The price to pay is simply too high.

The most hardcore thing that Harry James Potter ever did was not, contrary to popular belief, the ā€œthere’s no need to call me ā€˜sir,’ Professorā€ incident, but instead was either the time that he

a) laid into one of the people he respected most in the world (and the only authority figure in his life offering him help in one of the most desperate situations he’d ever been in) for leaving his pregnant wife, going ā€œman, you’re inhibited by your own self-loathing and fear? That’s rough. That really sucks. But you know what trumps that? RESPONSIBILITY. You brought a child into the world. You’re a father now. You’re scared? Walk it off. Walk it off AAAAAALLLL THE WAY BACK HOME. And say hi to Tonks for me.ā€

or

b) he willingly let himself be murdered, came back from the dead, walked back onto the battlefield, stared his own killer dead in the eyes completely unimpressed and called him ā€œTomā€

this sequence really hit me in the feels

fully sobbing at this sequence. this was a wonderful break from the story, a little moment to recognize the beauty of life.

okay done crying my eyes out. btw have u ever thought about how dokja's trauma from his father carries through all of orv without ever being the main focus of it? it truly did all begin with a young boy being abused, but the story doesn't focus on the abuser. it focuses on love and sacrifice and the ways in which we survive and find others in a ruined world. even when the dokkaebi king takes on his father's shape, its short-lived - almost as a nod to what a reader would "expect" of the plot, to wrap everything up in a neat bow that calls back on the 'real' evil of the story. but the evil in orv is never any one being. its the world that made a young boy lose his mother to the prison system and that made him feel isolated and objectified by the media. the traumas that dokja actively struggles with are those tied in with love. his mother, his protagonist, his writer, his children- the point is that evil is boring and ordinary and always here, apocalypse or not. it's love and its flawed, human presentations that make us who we are and that permeate our every action and decision. and that's okay. that's love.
