I like to think that when James found out he fancied Reg he didn't pull some dramatic ask out or serenade him on top of the Gryffindor table. He kept it quiet and showed love through actions whether it be on purpose or not. Loving is a second nature to James so whether he wants to keep his crush quiet or not he just can't.

When someone found out James had a crush on Reg they immediately went to warn him of whatever James future plans could be. And when it never came Reg started to wonder if James truly liked him at all.

James calls Regulus love and only love, sometimes he'll change it up, put my in front of it or say lover, but Regulus Black has always been love.

Regulus calls James baby because he said it as a joke one time and James completely melted and was unable to speak for a complete 30 seconds.

Bonus: the one time James called Regulus Babe he almost lost an eye.

Regulus would live for James because he had nothing worth losing, death was the easy way out and Reg is nothing if not a survivor. James on the other hand would sacrifice everything including himself if it meant keeping Reg there, he is nothing if not a savior.

So when the universe itself bet against the couple the roles reversed and everything ended in tragedy.

I'd die for you and I'd live for you but the universe had different plans and the rolls were reversed.

They were just one big tragedy.
