Do y'all ever remember that we only have Luffy's backstory starting at 7 years old? What was he doing before Shanks? Where was he living? Who is his mom? Where is she? Did he have any friends? Why is he so scared of being alone?

Theory and analysis under the cut

Like, I think about that scene after Ace and Sabo had saved him from Blue Jam's lackeys a lot. Ace asks why Luffy wants to be his friend so bad and Luffy says that being alone is worse than being hurt. That's a child speaking from experience.

I also think about that scene in Chapter 137 where Luffy saves the parent of the baby Lapin even though it had almost killed him and two of his crew.

Do Y'all Ever Remember That We Only Have Luffy's Backstory Starting At 7 Years Old? What Was He Doing

Maybe this was just showcasing how merciful and kind Luffy can be, but I don't think so. I think, in that moment, Luffy was relating to the baby Lapin. I think Oda was drawing a direct parallel to something Luffy may have experienced as a child, basically giving us a hint to more of Luffy's past. I'm not sure if it was his birth mom or a caregiver, but I think Luffy has been in a situation where a parental figure died because no one was around to help them and Luffy was too young and weak to save them.

I feel like this explains the shadowed eyes in the image. We've seen Luffy save many previous enemies without the indication that Luffy is so personally affected. I could believe that it's because he's worried about his crew, but in the next scene he has a serious expression that would've been plenty fitting on pulling up the Lapin. Maybe I'm overthinking, but I truly think there's more than concern for his crew or anger at the Lapins affecting him here.

On top of that, Luffy having a traumatic experience as a young child where he felt helpless would follow a recurring theme in his character arc. We've seen Luffy at three of his lowest points in the manga where he has been too weak to protect his loved ones.

First, chronologically, was Sabo.

Do Y'all Ever Remember That We Only Have Luffy's Backstory Starting At 7 Years Old? What Was He Doing

Luffy has always been a passionate kid, so maybe this is his first experience with loss, but I don't think so. This seems like a reaction to feeling like being too weak to save his loved ones is a pattern. Most kids Luffy's age have a hard time grasping death. They might know that it's not a good thing, but most don't understand exactly what it means. It might be different for him because he has been around Grey Terminal, but I doubt it. Yet, he knew instantly what Dogura was saying and what it meant. There was barely a period of shock or denial.

Do Y'all Ever Remember That We Only Have Luffy's Backstory Starting At 7 Years Old? What Was He Doing

Luffy is experiencing grief at a level of intensity that fits more with someone who knows exactly what death is. I really don't believe that this is his first time losing someone.

Second was being unable to protect his crew from Kuma.

Do Y'all Ever Remember That We Only Have Luffy's Backstory Starting At 7 Years Old? What Was He Doing

The phrase "What's wrong with me...?!" really stands out to me here. Luffy definitely takes his role as captain seriously and knows that it's his duty to protect his crew, but we know this self-blame is also influenced by the reopening an old wound. He has worked hard for a decade to make sure he was strong enough to protect his people, and here he has failed once again.

Finally, third is the loss of his other older brother, Ace.

Do Y'all Ever Remember That We Only Have Luffy's Backstory Starting At 7 Years Old? What Was He Doing

This, of course, led to the two year break where Luffy and his crew focused on training and becoming stronger to take on the New World. I would also like to point out that Luffy didn't emotionally stabilize until Jimbe reminded him that he still has his crew. He was grieving his brother, dealing with a sense of helplessness, and feeling alone in the world. Garp may be Luffy's grandfather, but he obviously neglected Luffy. The bandits might have grown on Luffy by the time he set sail, but I don't think Luffy considered them family in the same way as Ace and Sabo. Ace and Sabo were the only family he had until he met his crew. This isn't the grief of someone with a support network and people to motivate him. In this moment, and in all of the time since deciding to go after Ace, Luffy has pushed his nakama out of his mind. This is the grief of someone who has been too weak and feels like there's no one left to even try to protect. Someone all alone.

Luffy's character is one who's weaknesses are loneliness and helplessness, and that implies a lot about his developmental years. I truly believe that Luffy's backstory will involve the death of a parental figure. I also think that Garp either was even more neglectful than we realize or didn't know Luffy existed until he found out through Dragon.

I also think that Luffy's longing for freedom will also tie in somehow. We know he and no one who knew him as a child was a slave for the Celestial Dragons because he didn't recognize the symbol on Hancock, but maybe there was a nami and arlong-esque situation.

I'm so desperate for his backstory 24/7 lmao.

Raws: Bookwalker Translation: @ce-la Typesetting: Me!

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find the last page’s epilogue and message from the author. I’m still waiting for a new pen.

I really like the dynamic and punchline of this one. I guess the undervalued mom thing is just universal. The parts where Kunikida calls himself a housekeeper and wonders whether he raised him right always get me. Kyouka holding crab bread is so cute!!! Anyways, thanks to Ce-la translating and for being understanding of me and my… me-ness (a whole lot of them just passing down sage advice to me like that old person in a video game and explaining Japanese nuances). Let’s all also hope I get a mom friend like Kunikida who can take care of me. And enjoy the manga!

How one clip in the new season 3 trailer significantly changes Animaniacs canon

As I was replaying the new Animaniacs trailer for the 100th time in my head, I realized there's one clip that has big ramifications on how I previously viewed Animaniacs canon. How can one clip change canon before the episode's even out? I know it sounds clickbaity, but I think it's warranted. The clip in question is this:

The Warners are thrown into the water tower. The door is open and the interior of the tower is unfurnished and empty. There are about 21 tally marks visible on the wall presumably counting the days the Warners have been captured in the tower.
The Warners sit against a wall of the tower after being thrown in, looking discontent. Prison bar shadows beam down on them.
An image of the tower with the door shut. It is dark inside.

Now, to most fans of Animaniacs, this might not look out of the ordinary at all. After all, this is far from the first time they've seen the tower depicted this way- for decades, in fan fiction and fan art, this is exactly how it's been described and shown when it comes to stories about the Warners being locked in the tower. To my knowledge, though, through all Animaniacs animated media, this is the first time it's ever been officially shown like this.*

*It was shown somewhat close to this in reboot episode 1, but that was after no one had been living in it for 22 years.

What do I mean by "like this"? Previously in the show, whenever we got a look at the interior of the tower, it's always looked something along the lines of this:

An interior shot of the tower from the original Animaniacs, showing it having a fully fledged roller coaster, trees, grass, a mountain, a waterfall, and a lake.
Image from the original series of the Warners sleeping together in bed. Various furnishings are visible in the tower, including a giant cauldron bathtub, a stool, a dresser, and a toybox filled to the brim with toys and knick-knacks.
Image from the reboot of Dot in bed, close-up to the camera and looking out at the rest of the tower. It has a TV, a couch, a beanbag chair, a basketball on the floor, a rocket ship of some kind, and a metallic rollercoaster track is barely visible at the top of the shot.

It's fully furnished, packed to the brim with all the fun activities the Warners could ever need. It has rollercoasters, basketball hoops, a TV, and, importantly, a kitchen, bathroom, and comfy beds. (We'll assume Yakko chooses to sleep in a ball pit.) It's a veritable wonderland that any kid would be overjoyed to play in. I always assumed it was shown this way to soften the blow for kids who thought too much about the Warners' backstory- sure, they were locked in a tower for 60 years, but it couldn't have been that bad. Look at all the fun stuff they have in there!

When reading and writing tower-related angst, where the tower is depicted as a barren prison, I had always done it with the understanding that it wasn't really like that. Sure, we played it up for angst, but in reality, in canon, the Warners were more or less fine in there. They played games, rode roller coasters, had a good time. I was even gonna make an entire analysis post about what the Warners' time in the tower was really like. Anything else would be just a bit too dark, wouldn't it?

But no. It really was like that. According to the clip in the trailer, when the Warners are locked in the tower, they get all their fun stuff taken away. It really does become empty, barren, and dark. There's no rollercoasters. There's no TV. There's not a kitchen, a bathroom, or a warm bed to sleep in. There don't appear to be any windows, except maybe one prison-barred window at the top. It doesn't even look like they get rations of food. When they're locked in the tower, they sit in shadowy darkness, with absolutely nothing to entertain themselves except each other.

For

sixty

years.

And that's canon.

I find it interesting that Tsukasa reached for Nene without hesitation. It was probably because he needs her to fulfill his goals but I wanna be delusional and say he has a heart and cares for her / people

lol it is very hard to tell with tsukasa!! but he definitely does have a heart it’s just….selective lol.

and i think the fact that it's so hard to tell how tsukasa feels about people makes him and nene such good complements to each other!! nene is so expressive and open, and tsukasa is such a mystery to the audience and especially to amane, the person closest to him. these differences play off of each other beautifully. it's nene's openness and persistence and open-book optimism that gets us so many glimpses into tsukasa's feelings and past and world view and the different attitudes he's capable of embodying and expressing. and i personally think this moment is an example of that!

i think tsukasa catching nene was a very instinctive action he took!! i don't think he gave it any thought:

I Find It Interesting That Tsukasa Reached For Nene Without Hesitation. It Was Probably Because He Needs
I Find It Interesting That Tsukasa Reached For Nene Without Hesitation. It Was Probably Because He Needs

i loveeee this moment and these two pages like... he makes the decision so quickly that the panel of nene falling doesn't even have time to complete!! tsukasa physically breaks into the panel of nene falling, that's how fast and split second his decision is!! it's such a beautiful use of the space on the page. and tsukasa looks surprised by himself on the next page!! tsukasa is a very calucated person who usually has the upper hand, and in this moment he realizes he has truly given that upper hand and that foresight and that planning up, that he needs to resort to the last resort of calling amane for help. he resorts to what he sees as the impossible!! so i really don't think catching her was just part of the plan. there was definitely an emotional element involved there!!

i also think nene really has a knack for bringing out new sides of tsukasa. she's the reason he revealed that he's called for hanako before with no response!! she challenges him in ways he hasn't been challenged before!! she constantly surprises him and makes things interesting for him. i think she is definitely a very unique relationship in his life, and given all the reactions she gets out of him, i would say he definitely has at least some level of emotional investment in her as a person.

you are right though, that this doesn't necessarily mean he cares about her... but i don't think it's delusional for us to hope that it means something along those lines!! after all, they've spent a lot of time together leading up to this moment, and thanks to time travel, who knows how many interactions they've had that only tsukasa has experienced at this point? there's so much we don't know about tsukasa, constantly!! and i think the way he feels about nene is one of the more confounding mysteries about him.

i think it's very possible he has a soft spot for nene at this point! or at least is developing one. I’d believe it!! after all, if nene falls to her death who will listen to tsukasa talk about amane for four hours straight??

also look at them here:

I Find It Interesting That Tsukasa Reached For Nene Without Hesitation. It Was Probably Because He Needs

serious analysis on pause they're best friends here. they are consulting they are looking to each other they are silently communicating!!! where do we go from here!!! nene said :0!!!!! tsukasa said O_O!!!!!

okay back to more text based analysis lol: from a different angle, you could also argue tsukasa's end goal with all of this is extending nene's life, as he's working to grant amane's wish, which, to his knowledge from the conversation in ch91, would be to extend nene's lifespan. so indirectly, but still supposedly his goal in a way!! which is a way to interpret his motivations in this moment as well.

and on the topic of tsukasa's goals, i think they show his heart!! yes, he's got an agenda, but overall his agenda has really just been to grant amane's wish. and it's an agenda he does his best to fulfill, which is a way of showing heart!! he thinks this is how amane can get whatever he wants. so in a way, even if this moment was just about needing nene as a means to an end, the end and the means of getting there are all motivated by his heart!!

but yeah in summary i definitely think there's a lot of depth to this relationship and to this interaction in particular. it haunts me constantly!! i love tsukasa i love nene i love the ways they play off of each other so much!! yes i'm biased because i would steal the moon from the sky for tsukasa and nene, but i really do think she makes him feel a lot!! whether that results in affection for her i think is beautifully complicated and unclear, and i can't wait to see their relationship progress throughout the rest of the manga!!

so i am with you in your delusions anon!! keep the faith!! i certainly will!! <3

I think we should take more time to appreciate the cruel irony in so many of the bsd backstories, because Asagiri has this way of writing that's not just "oh sad things happened to this character." They're twisted, each in their own special way.

Atsushi: His whole life, he was treated awfully because he had the tiger. And yet, that tiger is what helped him survive that treatment, it's a manifestation of that will to live he grew because of his abuse. It's the source of all his strength and all his pain. The director told him to only hate him, never to hate himself, and yet, all his life, he blamed only himself for his misfortune. The one lesson the director wasn't trying to teach him is what he learned.

Dazai: At the beginning of dark era, Odasaku has one of the healthiest wills to live. And he reaches out to save Dazai from his own darkness, but he can't. But at the end of dark era...it's flipped. Dazai is begging Odasaku to stay, he's reaching out to stop him, he's telling him to find some meaning in life, that things will get better. Mr. "life is meaningless" himself is trying to tell his friend that life has value because he doesn't want him to go. It's right after he told Odasaku how he knows he's destined to lose everything he desires, and then Oda leaves him because he's lost his will to live. And when he dies, he sees himself as a man who failed to become good, to give up killing, yet Dazai sees him as a success story that people can change.

Chuuya: Chuuya's friends betrayed him because they thought he was betraying them by joining the Mafia. And then Chuuya joined the Mafia in order to protect the friends who just betrayed him.

Yosano: She only wanted to save lives. All she wanted was to help people, to heal them, and yet it was that kindness that ended up turning against her. Because by helping them, she also became the source of all their problems and all their pain. She saved their lives so much that all they wanted was to die.

I could go on for longer, but then this post would be very, very long. There's just something about the cruel irony in each of the backstories that make them all feel so tragic.

drew a bunch of different snufkins. idk much about a few of these so if i got anything wrong, dont bother telling me just think really hard about it and maybe i’ll receive your feedback telepathically in a week or so

OKAY EDIT because multiple people have mentioned it: IM SORRY book snufkin was only depicted with a harmonica. he has an accordion in some of tove’s standalone illustrations and i chose to draw like a very specific snufkin ive seen in a few drawings from her. the accordion was only for a fun comparison and also because accordions are awesome buut that wasnt a very good representation of general book snufkin my apologies

Twin Power

In Chapter 108, when Tsukasa tells Nene that Amane won't be able to answer her calls for help right now, Nene tells him to try by harnessing his "twin power."

Twin Power

Now this is silly!! Nene, don't you know twins don't actually have powers in real life? Tsukasa also not knowing what she's talking about is so precious, omg.

Buuut... what if he does have some kind of communication power linked to Hanako?

Despite Nene calling out to Hanako several times...

Twin Power
Twin Power

...he only comes when Tsukasa whispers something, presumably Amane's name! (For more on this, see this post.)

Twin Power
Twin Power

Now, this is really interesting, because Tsukasa is positive that Amane wouldn't answer his calls. And I think that is true--normally, Amane wouldn't.

Except, who was the person that stole his assistant away again...?

Twin Power

And this isn't me trying to disparage Amane, of course! It's obvious he cares about Tsukasa a lot (must we forget what being a yorishiro means?) but he would never just ignore Nene's calls while answering Tsukasa's.

Especially when Tsukasa indicates he's been ignoring his calls for a while now.

Twin Power
Twin Power

Now, while I'm sure that Hanako showing up to save Tsukasa right when he calls could just be for dramatic effect... what if Nene was actually onto something?

What if Tsukasa has some sort of psychic connection to Hanako, perhaps related to him being his yorishiro?

And what if Hanako has been ignoring him the whole time?

WOULD THAT BE FUCKED UP OR WHAT?!

The indication Tsukasa makes that he was stuck somewhere (maybe Hanako's boundary?) and had to free himself without Amane's help makes this all the more upsetting.

Twin Power

I just think that, on top of the very real fact that Hanako has been ignoring Tsukasa's cries for help, the idea that Hanako can't even tune them out is... pretty awful, don't you think?! It almost makes me hope that's not the case, for both their sakes.

Twin Power

...The fact that Tsukasa can stay so upbeat in spite of this makes it easier to stomach, though! What a guy. ♡

Anyway, I could just be reading too deep into things, but I personally believe AidaIro has a wicked sense of humor and that little "jokes" like this often have more meaning than we give them credit for. But let me know what you think!
