Story and gameplay concepts below! vvv
You have been staying in Japan after traveling there for a highly advanced medical procedure. Your only friend, Koyomi, sees how isolated you have become here, and is encouraging you to get into dating. She offers to introduce you to the sweet, normal, well-adjusted single guys she knows in your apartment complex. But for whatever reason, she doesn't seem to want you to meet Kage, your next-door neighbor.
"There's something really off about him. If you decide to talk to him, obviously I can't stop you. Just...please be careful. He's really...fragile."
Every choice you make with/towards your yandere neighbor will have a disproportionately larger impact on him than all the other dating "options," for better or worse. Also, be careful about the other "options." Every choice you make with them also affects Kage.
Build your guys' stats through interactions and cute dates. Figure out what they like and make them cute gifts. Witness Kage become increasingly unhinged and navigate the fallout of his wacky antics.
What you say, do, don't say or don't do all matter. Especially to your yandere!
Why has he latched on to you so tightly? Reach the "true ending" to find out, along with answers to other questions raised along the way.
Choose your name, gender, and appearance. Choose your birthday for some fun birthday surprises. Choose your guy, or guys. But remember Koyomi's advice: be really careful with Kage. He's fragile.
I’m so happy your adding actual skin tones to your game a lot of games I’ve played as a darker woman don’t often have the option for me to be a similar skin tone to what I actually am and it’s refreshing to see
Wow, I guess I haven't played a ton of modern games, I would think that would just be a given by now, but here we are. If we're putting skin tone options in a game it seems like one would just naturally put a wide spectrum in. That's not difficult to do at all.
This reminds me of something else with the character customization in my game though. I'm glaringly aware that I'm lacking a variety of hair textures in the hair options. I have some loose waves and some slightly tighter waves but no real curls or coils. That one can be more of a skill issue on an artist's part, being able to draw them and have them look good.
Unfortunately I've collected hair assets from various community sources as well as pulled some from the base engine default assets, and none of them have a lot of texture. I'm not sure how much that's going to matter or bother people, but right now if I can't find any pre-made I would have to draw them myself, and they wouldn't match the other hair options in style. I'm not even sure they would come out good looking in tiny pixel art form (again skill issue). So I'm feeling a little stuck there.
Sorry for the rant, you didn't even bring up hair but it was something I had been thinking about with the customization and I was reminded by the comment on skin tone variety. This is just me saying "out loud" I'm sorry about the lack of options in that regard.
Relieved to say the character creator is nearly finished. I still need to make a few versions of the character portrait clothing that align with the "medium" sized neck, but I think that's about it. All clothing has corresponding portrait clothing now (where it would apply; swim shorts with no shirt or off-shoulder clothing of course don't show up in the character portrait).
I've fixed a couple of the hair colors, so red hair looks like a natural red hair, and brown hair now has a dark and light version. And the animal ears and tails now have hue shifters so you can choose the color of your ears and tail (if you choose to have them).
Oh, and I still have to add human ears too. A lot of the hairstyles will hide human ears anyway, so I have to figure out how to layer those with the hair; not sure if I can have them in the "beast ears" section or if they will have to have a separate section.
lol I'm glad you like my ask! im so impressed with your art because i genuinely couldn't tell if it was traditional or digital because it looked like pencil/pen but the hair had really cool layering!!! so it's really interesting to see how it looks compared to a colored background...
speaking of which is the background also hand drawn and then uploaded as well? sorry for the ramble haha but im very interested in your yan boy
Thank you kind stranger ;w; I have to assume you're talking about the "map" of the game since Kage doesn't have backgrounds. But I'm also a bit dense and haven't eaten yet so maybe I'm misunderstanding you.
Anyway, the map tiles are done by a variety of extremely talented Japanese pixel artists. I purchased some of their work for the game & will be listing them in the game credits of course!!
Hiya! I'm excited for the game! It all looks amazing. The art, characters, story! I love Kage! Especially his yandere~
I like the saying:
I can fix him I can make him worse.
I was wondering what inspired you to make the game? Or the inspiration of the characters?
Again, good job on the game! I'm rooting for you!!! Sending you all my support!
Blargh you've hit me right in the feels here, I'm so glad you like Kage and the game ;w;
The neat thing about this game is that "I can fix him (or make him worse)" is kind of a core concept/overall theme of it, though in kind of an unusual way that I don't want to reveal online since it would spoil it a bit. But I think you will enjoy the game (I hope)!
The game inspiration is a little weird. It was just over a month ago that I started this, not too long after finishing the game Omori, which is also an indie game made in the same engine that I am using for my game (Omori is actually how I learned about this game engine's existence).
If you're unfamiliar with Omori, mental health and trauma are major themes in the game, and I loved how they combined that with sweet and sentimental themes too. It was just a really touching game that hit close to home to me. My game is definitely very different, but does deal with mental health/trauma and uses the same engine.
The other inspiration is going to sound terrible, but I was literally searching online for yandere games to play, and of course the first one that popped up in searches was Yandere Simulator, and since I literally live in a cave I didn't know about it. I went to the game's website and wasn't really impressed with it, didn't care for the art or design or any of it, the only thing I liked was the idea of playing as a yandere and stalking your crush, but it sounds like the game is stuck forever in demo/testing mode and won't ever be finished anyway.
Also the lack of male yanderes was disappointing, but whatever, not every game is made for me. :) But I thought, wouldn't it be cute to go the other way with it, and make a game where YOU are being stalked by a yandere who is obsessed with you...? I did find a TON of visual novels online that have that as a theme, but I personally prefer RPG style games where there is some gameplay and you can move your character around, so I decided to go for that instead, from what I can see there are way less of those available with a male yandere stalker. In fact, I haven't found ANY so far, but I probably just didn't look hard enough.
Kage is kind of an externalized (and somewhat exaggerated) expression of all my own weird traumas, insecurities, and issues, which isn't something I'm super proud of but also something I've had to work really to overcome, which I AM proud of. He's like my "shadow" self if you're familiar with Jungian psychology, which is why I named him "Kage," it's just Japanese for "shadow" lol.
Sorry, that was a really long-winded response so...thanks for the question and coming to my TedTalk...and for your support <3
Updated logo for 2-Headed Boy, my under development F2P yandere boyfriend RPG.
I started adding shops and items beyond just the food court to the Midnight City Mall, plus a few aimlessly wandering NPCs.
There's the book/plushie store and clothing store made so far, planning an electronic store and a shoe store next, along with a little noodle shop. Unfortunately all the items besides food are only gifts for your love interests for now (you can't equip clothing and have your character change outfits). Maybe after I release the game I'll patch that in, but for now I'm trying to mainly focus on features that directly impact gameplay/the storylines (gifts being a mechanic for boosting stats with love interests).
I also have a crafting/cooking system, and those gifts give better stat boosts with the love interests than shopping, but I haven't implemented the recipes/ingredients for those yet.
Also I finally actually put the banking system into the ATMs. Player gets a fixed amount of money every Friday deposited to their account, so you will need to budget somewhat in-game. Will add small ways to make extra money too at some point!
He looks back when you look back,
Not just once,
Not just twice
Full chain of dialogue from my previous post. WIP prototype of my upcoming F2P yandere boyfriend rpg.
I see already I need to adjust the font on the choice menus since option 3 is getting cut off!
Also gonna darken Kage's hair. I was originally going to have some transparency for this shot of him, so I wasn't too worried about the hair tone, but I decided against that. Maybe I'll change my mind again. Either way it's getting darkened.
omg it looks so good.... adding weather mechanics is super cool! does the weather affect anything/trigger any specific scene between the player and kage?
Thank you, the season changes of course do and I'm still brainstorming how to tie the weather into events in the game. Since it's randomized I can't do anything that would be drastically significant to the story. But I can work in something fun for that for sure, some smaller scenes or changes that give an opportunity for stat altering encounters
Will we be able to adopt the cats at the cat cafe?
Yes! I am thinking at minimum the player can adopt at least one cat. Maybe more, I'm not sure yet, the cafe is still in its infancy but yes you can def have a cat
