Oops I just binged 4 books in a week, guess I'm in a new fandom now.
katniss everdeen didnt even tell us the names of her own PARENTS. of course she didn't bring up beetee's wife and child, let alone effie's family in the original trilogy. SHE BARELY TOLD US ANYTHING ABOUT PEETA!!! she basically went through life with survival blinders on, give the girl a breakššš
sunrise on the reaping was so devastating and i ALREADY KNEW WHAT WOULD HAPPEN. doesnāt help that finnick did not get his happy ending!!! haymitch survived but i was STILL miserable. i am NOT surviving a finnick book.
You guys want Finnicks book so bad but personally Suzanne can keep it bro I donāt want to read what happens after his games I donāt think I could handle it. Sunrise on the Reaping destroyed me and I havenāt even finished it yet š

haymitch seeing a bunny: "how could I possibly kill a creature that brings to mind my girl?" š„ŗ
snow seeing mockingjays:
āI first saw the girl at the Hob when she was just a baby. Burdock was so proud of her, he toted her around everywhere. After he died in that mine explosion, she started coming alone, trading the odd squirrel or rabbit. Tough and smart, her hair in two braids then, reminding me for all the world of Louella McCoy, my sweetheart of old. And after she volunteered for the Games, that nickname couldnāt help but slip out. I didnāt want to let them in, her and Peeta, but the walls of a personās heart are not impregnable, not if they have ever known love. Thatās what Lenore Dove says, anyway.ā
When we first meet Haymitch, we can instantly tell that he has made a habit of distancing himself from tributes. That he has nobody left he loves, so he pushes away anybody else that tries to come into his life. But now we know how full of love Haymitch was. How deeply he loved Lenore Dove, how deeply he loved his mother and Sid, his friends, even Hattie. Everything Haymitch did was out of love. He was reaped because he tried to protect the girl he loved. As he was reaped, he did his best to protect his sweetheart, 13-year-old Louella McCoy he grew up with. He tried to distance himself from the other tributes, but eventually he couldnāt help but love them too.
He couldnāt help but call Ampert āBuddy.ā He couldnāt help but call all of the district 6 tributes his doves, and mourn all of their deaths, no matter how little he actually knew them. How Louella was replaced, and how he wanted to hate her replacement, but gave her the name Lou Lou and protected her like their own. Haymitch was the one who initiated the hug of all four tributes from 12. He was distrustful of Wyatt, and grew to mourn him like a brother. He carried Lou Lou like his life depended on holding onto her. How he hated Maysilee Donner, and thought of her as the most stuck-up girl in 12. He called her Sis. He grew to love her like the sister he never had. She died as his sister.
All of the love that Haymitch didnāt need to give, and yet he loved so endlessly and so whole-heartedly. And with every person he loved, he lost them, and lost a part of himself. No wonder he didnāt want to let Katniss and Peeta into his heart. He had already tried so hard to push away Burdock, who relentlessly tried to care for him in his despair.
Then, in comes Katniss Everdeen. She carried with her a piece of every person Haymitch tried to push away. She was Asterid, Burdock, the Seam children he grew up with, all in one person. He didnāt want to let her in. He couldnāt have.
And yet, Haymitch couldnāt help but call her sweetheart.
Because Katniss was a woven tapestry of every person he had ever loved. She was his best friendās daughter. She carried Lenore Doveās songs. Louellaās skin and hair. Wyattās protectiveness. Maysileeās fight, Maysileeās resistance, Maysileeās pride, Maysileeās pin. And in the arena, she painted the best poster Haymitch and Maysilee couldāve ever hoped for- Rue, surrounded by flowers, her passing in dignity and not as another number in the games. And refusing the Capitol their winner by eating the berries with Peeta.
Itās no surprise that Katniss and Peeta broke down Haymitchās walls. Haymitch had the flint striker, the spark. And Katniss was the fire that caught 25 years later.
Next time, if you want to hurt me, please just shoot me

I need help with finding a faceclaim for a character of mine cause I am struggling. Sheās a hunger games oc with short, curly, black hair and blue eyes (variable). I have like one drawing of her for reference but I just canāt find any actress or movie character that fits right.
I have some ideas but Iām not really all that into them and I wanna find a better one. Iām even willing to change the character up a bit to get a good fit. For context sheās 15 in the 68th games and 22 in the 75th games.
Some of my ideas were
Ruby Cruz (68th games)
Florence Pugh (75th games)
And Camren Bicondova
If anyone has suggestions PLEASE tell me. Also if anyone might have suggestions for a younger faceclaim too I would love to hear it.
My theory for the next Hunger Games book is that itāll follow a spy from INSIDE the capitol (whoās actually organizing and failing to start a revolution), and/or a tribute from district 12, who died in the games.
The spy (Plutarch Heavensbee?) sees how the world is build, sees their own position in society and decides to rebel against it since itās completely wrong. Sure, it may take a while, but in the end they actually do something!
And maybe, the spy tries to make a winner, or a revolutionary, of the district 12 tribute (or any other tribute), but it doesnāt work. They die, and maybe they try another tribute, and that person dies, and it continues until finally they hatch a plan?
"I wanna be like Katniss." "Oh you wanna learn archery ?" Nah bro I wanna overthrow the government da fuq.
July 17, 1935 - June 20, 2024
I think the most radical thing the hunger games does is tell young people that the most revolutionary thing you can do is have unconditional love for humanity. Katniss throughout the entire series is guided by a deep sense of compassion for the people around her. It is what causes her to volunteer, to bury rue, to mercy kill cato, its why she tries to save peeta, why finnick telling her to remember who the real enemy is works, and even though her compassion for the larger world falters when peeta is kidnapped, it comes back when she visits hospitals and asks for mercy for other victors and ultimately, it is love and belief in a better humanity that makes her kill coin. Through it all, she maintains an unfaltering belief in the fundemental goodness of humanity, which is diametrically opposed to dr gaul's and snow's worldview. Peeta is even more unwaveringly compassionate
So the series tells young people that the most revolutionary thing you can be is compassionate. Let compassion drive your politics. Let yourself believe in the fundemental goodness of people. And i think that's deeply important in a world that touts the superiority of pure reason or logic, to allow yourself to be guided by something as emotional as compassion. Katniss everdeen tells us that your politics should be rooted in compassion in a world that thinks detatchment or cynicism is intelligence and i think thats v cool
the (hottest) best hunger game men š
I have so many of Joshes movies to watch š
If anyone has any recommendations iāll add them to the list šš
When I was younger I was obsessed with the hunger games.
Every time I re-read the books or re-binged the movies I always HATED gale and I never knew why.
(i want him to rail me !!)
it is really not a good idea to read the hunger games during school. I did it anyway. and I cried. again. but I'm gonna keep doing it anyway
Hi PLEASE go off about how the districts in The Hunger Games work. Thank you. š
ahaha OKAY!!
so I think the big issue with other YA dystopia that tried to emulate the hunger games was that it didn't grasp why the districts actually existed, and how the enforcement of their division actually served to benefit the capitol and weaken any resistance. tbh I didn't really think too deeply about this aspect of it until recently when i was watching someone on youtube's deep-dive into the divergent series and was struck by how stupid that series's idea of factions were. they're based primarily on personality traits, and not only that but they have a system where everyone has to be manually sorted into those factions? which is just way too much effort for a system so arbitrary that doesn't actually serve a logical purpose in maintaining a totalitarian regime.
meanwhile the hunger games's districts make complete sense; the capitol never had to corral people or even do much of anything other than draw some borders and then enforce said borders, and they did so logically based on preexisting socio-economic systems. district 12 is a mining district because it's located in appalachia, which is already an industrial mining area. by dividing panem based on available resources, the capitol can very easily maintain its control by forcing each individual district to be dependent on the capitol's allocation of said resources. no other districts can independently trade goods with one another, so if any district wants to receive everything it needs to survive, it has to stay in the capitol's good graces. if district four pisses them off, the capitol can just say "okay, good luck heating your homes this winter" and there's nothing district four can do about it. naturally this leads to certain districts receiving special treatment; district one supplies luxury goods for the capitol and as a result is allowed a level of wealth and comfort not afforded to other districts, which 1) motivates them to maintain the status quo to continue benefiting from it, 2) gives them a sense of pride and superiority to other districts that alienates them from others, and 3) breeds resentment for certain districts among the poorer ones, creating further division with minimal effort on the capitol's part. even if it's in everyone's best interests to unite and fight together, why would district 12 give a shit that district 1 is also suffering under the same regime? their families don't have to worry about putting food on the table.
and then the failed rebellion happens, district 13 is seemingly wiped off the map, and the capitol comes up with the hunger games, which is a pretty genius idea for a punishment that also serves to strengthen its power. "we destroyed district 13 and we have the power to destroy you, too, but all we're demanding of you is two of your children per year, and we're gracious enough to provide them a chance at survival." (i've seen shitty YA dystopias that have similar selection processes for whatever arbitrary system they establish where NO ONE who is selected comes back, which is insane and doesn't work because without that sliver of hope, no one who's being subjugated has anything to lose.)
and while every district is forced to sacrifice at least one child, some districts have a better chance of bringing a child home alive than others, which gives them the "privilege" of seeing selection for the games as something honorable. "yes, you might die, but you've had the resources to train for this your whole life, and if you win you'll bring more glory to our district, just like all the ones who came before you who now live in the victors' village" (and of course the more tributes who win in a certain district, the more aspirational being a tribute becomes, because you have plenty of examples of winners who now live in even more luxury than before; meanwhile district 12's victors' village is technically 'luxurious' but its only occupant is miserable and lonely and his life is hardly any better than the rest of them). and with this sense of competition comes even more division, because why would i see district 2 as my ally when their tribute, who i was forced to watch cave in my child's head with a rock, is now here on their mandatory victory tour celebrating the fact that they did so? sure, they still lost one kid, but they could have lost two like the rest of us.
so tl;dr the districts are a very logical, surprisingly simple aspect of the capitol's totalitarian rule: there's no arbitrary sorting system they have to create, it's based on the control of basic resources humans require to survive, it's relatively easy to enforce both through physical borders and a systemic "divide-and-conquer" approach appealing to human emotion. it's very believable as it merely takes real socio-economic disparity and class conflict to its most extreme.
(also this isn't related to the districts but other YA dystopia tends to portray their protagonists as "special" or "different" and that's why they're capable of taking down the system, but katniss is very explicitly Not Special. she's skilled in a way that makes perfect sense given her upbringing, but she's not overpowered; she wins because the pieces just so happen to fall into place in just the right way that allows her to win. the spark of rebellion she ignites by forcing the capitol to allow both her and peeta to win happens because she's intelligent, sure, but also because these poison berries happen to be available. it's a mundane victory made significant through circumstances where she happens to be the Right Person at the Right Time.)
obligatory "idk if this made any fucking sense lmao" bookend
Okay, I'm not sure if this is just me and I'm overthinking it, but I feel like even in the book, no one acknowledges that we don't know for sure that Louella McCoy was really the one to make it home in that coffin. Hell, when Lou Lou dies, Haymitch even takes a moment to think about what will happen to her body, if it will be sent back to District 11 or left in the Capitol, or even if she would be cremated. Now of course we know that at the end of the book, "Louella McCoy" is sent back in a coffin on the train with Haymitch, but for all we know, it could still be Lou Lou. Think about it from the Capitol's perspective: they want no loose ends, no one will ever know about this, and those who do can never do anything. If they want to keep this so secret, wouldn't it make more sense to send Lou Lou back since her body would have the correct wounds from her death in the arena, so if anyone ever opened the coffin, they would assume it was Louella. Of course, they could assume that no one would ever open the coffin, and they would most likely be right, but if someone did, even years down the road, it should be pretty obvious whether this person died from blunt force trauma or poison since those are two wildly different deaths.
Besides all that, I think that it also adds another layer of tragedy to the whole situation. Lou Lou was kidnapped from her home, stripped of her identity, and murdered by the Capitol while brainwashed to be someone else. It feels even more cruel to send her to a District she's never been to, into the home of a dead girl she was forced to replace, and to be buried under a false name, where her body can be visited by people she never knew, all while everyone who loved her (presumably) rest elsewhere. Meanwhile, Louella was kidnapped from her home, died and had her identity stolen, and no one evens knows what happened to her, but we know she never made it back.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) dir. Francis Lawrence
Anyone wanna talk about how there were 50 tributes for his games and it would have been 50 more when the 75th were destroyed and haymitch said he had felt them all at his back when he was trying to finish them the first time -
I saw you recently did one like this but I still wanted to ask, (sorry) because I like your blog very very much. Do you have any other recs that take place during Annieās games, with like the development in the relationship between Annie and finnick? If the ending is with Finn š thatās ok but preferably not⦠it can be short or long
Love your writing style btw
Hi, thanks so much for your interest! I donāt know how many new recs Iāll be able to give you since I just did a similar list, but Iāll try. I also might be mentioning fics Iāve put on previous lists, but they were from a long time ago so you might not have seen them. If you haven't already, I would strongly recommend looking at my other lists because there are many stories there that fit your request!
The first two have been mentioned on other lists, and the rest are new.
Breathe by The_Twisted_Kingdom - This is a long one that starts at Annieās Games. I like the dramatic irony in here because they donāt know each other and Annie doesnāt know what Finnick is doing in the Capitol. I will mention that it's incomplete and hasn't been updated for about three years, so just a warning about that.
Just Us by Nanyoky - This is another one that I really like and it's similar to the one above. It is completed (and canon compliant, sorry) but the story wraps up nicely. This could be a good read if you haven't checked it out yet.
this little universe between our backs by electrumqueen - This is a short one but it fits your request and is so beautiful. There's such a strong command of language here that really makes it a compelling read.
(no) hope in the water by rhllors - This is in a similar style to the last one. I really like how it portrays the brutality of the Games and Annie's resilience through it, as well as her and Finnick's relationship.
Five boys who were not Finnick Odair. by sakurasencha - This is a cool take on Finnick and Annie's dynamic, as well as Annie's history. It's a nonlinear narrative dealing mostly in flashbacks, but the central point of the story is Annie's Games and the aftermath. This could be a good read if you're looking for something unique.
Where the Sun Meets the Sea by sunflowersmile - This one really fleshes out Annie's life and her relationship with Finnick outside of the Games, although the Games are a focal point. It's alternating POV with Finnick and Annie so it's also cool to see both sides.
Not About Heroes by EmilyRose34 - This is a fic with the classic premise of Annie's Games, but what I think makes this one unique is the dynamic created between Finnick and Annie. It really helps illustrate the "she crept up on me" line because they don't really register each other right away. I really like the slow burn here.
I hope you can find something, and feel free to reblog with additions or self-promo if you want!
Peeta was always endgame no matter how you slice it. Obviously there's the narrative choice, already gone into that, but from a character perspective too.
I mean there's the whole 'gale winds are loud, devastating, and quick to pass' and 'pita (bread) is considered the cornerstone that helped create humanity' thing, there's war vs peace, wrath vs mercy, self vs many, etc etc.
One of them brings destruction (gale is defined by what he kills, be it rabbits or sisters, and the systems he wants to bring down) and the other, creation (peeta is defined by the things he makes - speeches, bread, art).
One of them will end the world, the other will rebuild it from the ashes. Obviously Gale is needed - you can't make omelettes without breaking eggs after all- but he was never a sustainable, long term option.
WHICH THEN BRINGS ME BACK OH SO NICELY to how love IS a central theme of the series, because there HAS to be a 'so after'.
there's more but i can't put them on here!! i'll post another!!
Wyatt Callow you will always be loved.
