she’s not some overlooked, underappreciated character. her brilliance gets acknowledged all the bloody time. remus and sirius literally call her the brightest witch of her age and harry praises her like three million times throughout the books. and she’s one of the most popular characters in franchise. where is she underappreciated?

it’s honestly rather insulting to claim the feminist narrative with hermione because all these woke idiots try to claim that she’s some exhausted damsel in distress forever in servitude to these two tyrannical boys who use the hell out of her and it’s absolutely not the case.

she’s not a pushover. if she has a problem, she would argue and fight back. she and ron bicker all the time in the books. she’s ridiculously stubborn with her convictions in the books. she’s more than recognised for her talents, both remus and sirius literally call her the brightest witch of her age.

here’s this competent, intelligent, loyal, assertive female character whose talents are more than recognised and admired by her friends and everyone around her and then here comes these woke idiots who claim that she’s this poor little girl whose talents get taken advantage of, implying she’s this weak and spineless little thing who doesn’t speak up against her supposedly ungrateful friends who regularly show their appreciation and love for her, it’s such an insult to the character.

In this AU Harry starts seeing a Muggle therapist, one who remains completely unfazed by everything he says. Dragons, Horcruxes, Death eaters? The therapist calmly nods, assuming it’s all metaphor. Meanwhile, Harry speaks with complete sincerity, telling the literal truth. (maybe will do a series if you guys like it, I will maybe try other characters too lol)

Session One : The Origin

Harry: "It all started when I was eleven. A giant broke down my door and told me I was a wizard."

Therapist (nodding thoughtfully): "Ah. The giant could symbolize your inner potential crashing through childhood repression."

"mummy my knee!!" harry breaks a window? "mummy i'm sorry!!" draco is rude to him? "mum i hate him!!" snape is an asshole? "mum my potions professor!!" and ofc lily rushes in every time to solve all harry's problems for him.

like. harry is lily's number one fan. he brags about her constantly. he is worse than draco could ever be. "your dad bought the quidditch team brooms?? well my MUM killed VOLDEMORT!!" "your mum owns an apothecary?? my mum has a mastery in charms AND potions." and lily is just as bad!! "did you know my son's the youngest seeker in a century?" "that's my son right there, top marks in defense you know" they are ridiculous. they are the mother son duo ever.

As a trans person, I am never, ever, ever giving up Harry Potter. And our fandom isn't going anywhere. Fucking deal with it.

Around this time last year, when JKR made some stupid comment (totally forgetting which one, there's just been so many at this point), I wrote a defense of Harry Potter fans' decision to remain in the fandom that essentially boiled down to this: giving up this fandom means giving up our people. In the wake of JKR's horrendous role in the anti-scientific UK Supreme Court ruling conflating sex with gender, this sentiment remains exactly the same.

I don't begrudge any HP fan who can no longer engage with JKR's IP due to this vile development. But I remain loud and proud in my support of the ✨community✨ that Harry Potter has brought together. As I mentioned in my last post, this community is not only full of the funniest, nicest, cleverest, and most creative people I've ever met in my life, but it is also the most diverse I have ever been a part of — and as an extrovert and community organizer who has lived in four different countries and speaks three languages, I have met a shit ton of people and been a part of lots of communities, significantly more than the average person. You are out of your mind if you think I am going to turn my back on the community that has been so critical to my survival as a queer, brown, neurodivergent, depressed, burnt out, poor Muslim femme in this capitalist, fascist hellscape. Day in and day out, my friends and I are pushing forward some of the most powerful narratives about queer, trans, and colonial liberation that society has to offer, which will have ripple effects on media and pop culture in the time to come (as is the nature of fandom). Nothing JKR can do or say will take that away from us. Nothing.

So to everyone who wants to claim that we're being transphobic for FREELY engaging with JKR's IP and doing things with it that would make her combust — that we're transphobic for wanting to keep this beautiful, generous community in tact — I not so kindly ask you to fuck off and leave us the fuck alone. You resist your way, and we will continue to resist in ours.
