They’ll Never Be Another Cartoon Like... Adventure Time

With the end of Adventure Time: “Distant Lands” and waiting for the next mini-series, “Fiona and Cake”, it has comes to an realization that they’ll never be another cartoon series like Adventure Time. While many people will say that there already is like Steven Universe, Gravity Falls, Amphibia, The Owl House, and other shows that came out in the 2010s, but there’s something about Adventure Time hits differently that many of those shows don’t.

1) Growing Up

Adventure Time has been going since 2010 and could’ve easily become been like Simpsons and Spongebob for overstaying their welcome and gotten stale, but instead the show decided to grow, taken risk and having their characters to develop as the series went on and looking at Adventure Time Distant Lands, specifally “Obsidian” and “Together Again”, it’s clear to me it has.

Look at Finn Merten, he started out as immature adventurous boy

image

But in later seasons, he went through a lot such as

Heartbreak

image

Father issues

image

Losing his arm

image

Seeing himself die in front of him

image

In those experience, it allowed him to mature to be more passive than aggresive

image

Then in “Obsidan”, He’s more calm and chill

image

But what truly made me realize this is in “Together Again”, they showed Finn and Jake, who are the protagonists of Adventure Time, dead and there’s no ressurection, they stayed dead. It’s something that you don’t see in everday cartoon, most cartoons will show the protagonist older and what they’ve been doing the future, but for Adventure Time, they died.

image

It just shows that Adventure Time can grow, even when characters finally pass on.

2) The Land of Ooo

What the show truly sells is it out lore and how much it offers. While it takes place post apocalyptic Earth, the worldbuilding is expansive and the lore can’t even compare to Avatar: The Last Airbender, but more to One Piece. There so much that the show has explored such as

The society of humans

image

Elemental beings

image

The Crown

image

MOs

image

Kindgoms

image

Mother Gum

image

Vamps

image

Wizard City

image

and so much more

What I truly love about the series that there’s still so much to explore, espeically finding out there’s more than the Land of Ooo such as planets, and the multiverse.

3) The Many Characters of Ooo

There are so many colourful characters in the show that are quite memorable, even characters that appeared in one episode. They are even given more depth and development that I didn’t expect to see.

Cookie wanted to be a princess

image

Air helping BMO finding her way home

image

The unexpected friendship between a Snow Golem and a Fire Wolf Pup

image

Dirt Beer Guy (Root Beer Guy)  and Cherry Cream Soda never dated before they married, so they decided to actually date and see what an actual  relationship is

image

and there’s Cinnemon Bun that got a massive amount of development that actually from a goof in the Candy Kingdom to a royal guard for the Fire Kingdom

image

And there’s the character relationships that dear glob it’s amazing. Seeing  characters that you don’t normally see interacting is amazing like

Ice King and Marceline, two secondary characters and creating an entire backstory that’s tragic tale.

image

It was clever how the writers did by showing a glimpse to their past in season 3 such as

“Holly Jolly Secrets”

image

and “Memory of a Memory”

image

Having a father and daughter relationship. It was very heartwarming to Simon has gain his sanity and visits Marceline and her bubblegum girlfriend from time to time.

image

4) Philosphical Messages

While there are many cartoon shows have philosphical moments like Steven Unvierse and The Owl House, Adventure Time has gone a bit deeper, making me believe that this show was than just a kid/teen show, espeically getting older.

BMO wonders if  he grows up, will he remain the same or different. Will it change his body or change his soul.

image

Finn questions if being borin is the greatest act of creation, what you supposed to do next and what’s the point making an effort if we “blow up”.

image

Marceline thinks that there’s no bad people. Good people can sometimes do bad stuff and that’s bad, but if you do it once, it’s a mistake and that’s not bad

image

Adventure Time can really make you wonder about life.

In conclusion, Adventure Time is one of those shows that can’t be mimic for it’s heavy lore, growth in the show and characters, deep messages, and the many colourful cast of characters. Adventure Time could’ve overstayed it’s welcome and can get boring like Simpsons and Spongebob, but it mange to stay fresh with ideas and take risk and that what makes Adventure Time enjoyable.

I am firmly convinced Loid could come home and see Yor putting a blood-soaked dress into the washing machine and he would just think (as she’s stuttering out excuses) “Wow, civil servants have it rougher than I realized.” and Loid casually pulls out and unloads a gun while telling Yor about his day as the washing machine clunks and Yor, not even thinking about how easily he does it, would equally think “Wow, doctors have it rougher than I realized” and Anya is in the back thinking “Momma and Papa are Dumb.” bc NONE OF THEM HAVE EVER SEEN A NORMAL HUMAN IN THEIR ENTIRE GODDAMN LIVES

All Jouno had to do in the scene where Chuuya throws the bullets is to activate his ability so they would just pass through him. The bullets can’t hurt him.

They can, however, hurt Tecchou. One of them even pierces his shoulder.

Which means this scene of Jouno slicing at the bullets to deflect them is 100% for the sake of protecting Tecchou. There’s literally no other reason.

image

Just look at the action lines. You can see how Jouno’s sword motion starts directly above Tecchou’s head, deflecting the bullets away from him.

But sure, Jouno, keep telling us how much you hate Tecchou. We know the truth

// BSD manga spoilers for chap 80

-

Rereading the manga, and I love Ranpo's argument for proving the ADA innocent. His argument is basically just "with the amount of difficult cases I've solved, do you all really think I'd get CAUGHT if I became a terrorist??" and y'know what, he's got a point. Like, after 12 years of solving crimes no one else could solve, surely he knows how to get away with crime.

Dazai analysis

I think people tend to forget that Dazai is actually a depressed burnt out genius who has a problem with alcohol (whiskey) and probably smokes to numb the pain or even forget how numb he actually feels sometimes or so he started and then became addicted.

Dazai is basically a young adult, after all, and has a shit ton of trauma.

He's known in the Port Mafia as Demon prodigy and was raised by Mori himself.

When talking about him, the Mafia says "your blood is black. Mafia black, more so than anyone else in this country, "

Dazai Analysis

And yet, we can see glimpses of hurt. We can deduce Dazai is hurt by everyone brushing off his suicide attempts. We can tell he doesn't actually want to form bonds with others because he knows he'll end up leaving and it's better to be hated than to have people crying his death.

He could have just left the Mafia, after all, and yet, he blew up Chuuya's car. Why do you think this is? Because Dazai knows Chuuya cares about him.

Dazai is scared of feelings and scared of even the idea of being loved and doesn't find himself worth it. This is the truth.

Even more, looking at how much he cared about Oda, we can deduce that at some point he believed he could be loved or accepted. But Oda died and I'm sure Dazai blames himself. He probably thinks that people who do stick to him will not end up well. He probably finds himself to be like a black cat—a misfortune.

"The greatest misfortune for Dazai's enemies is that they are Dazai's enemies"

He craves death—or, better said, he craves being free. Some might not understand it, but when you are suicidal, you don't necessarily crave death itself. No, death is too simple and too easy. You crave liberation. You crave the chains to be ripped apart, you crave freedom, from yourself, from people, from feelings. From everything that is considered life and actually brings you nothing but sorrow.

Someone who finds themselves in such situation doesn't think on a too long term. The moral compass is broken beyond limit and, as he said:

Dazai Analysis

He wants to feel human. He wants it so bad and yet he's ingrained into himself and was even encouraged in more or less known ways that he is not human, from quotes like Demon prodigy to mafia black blood and we could go on.

Even more: Dazai respects Yosano and Fukuzawa. Yosano, who had to deal with Mori, just as he had to. It's quite of a bonding over the trauma, even if different. Fukuzawa is like an actual proper father figure he probably never had and seems to understand him yet trusts him. Fukuzawa gives Dazai a stability he probably never had, not in the proper way.

(as someone who studies the development of people, I can tell you that a kid who's not given stability by the important figures in their life ends up insecure)

We are given hints of him being a womanizer and yet only in the context of commiting double suicide with him. He's rather flirtatious if anything else and with how manipulative he is, he could make someone double suicide with him, but he wants a "clean suicide". I am indeed sure that he is probably a womanizer (yes, Dazai bisexual king in my opinion) and is indulging into such things to feel something other than numb or guilt or hurt.

Because Dazai does feel guilt.

He acts like a clown to entertain people, loves nagging at Kunikida, told Kyouka 35 people are nothing and people not being able to change is bullshit with Oda in his mind.

Dazai is complex and I'm not negating that he's bad. He is bad. He is toxic. He is everything you wanna call him. But he's also a heavily traumatized kid who became an adult and you gotta keep that in mind.

Dazai is relatable in the way most of BSD characters are. He's morally grey at best and the Mafia days haunt him.

Like it or not, Dazai is an amazing and very influential character.

Okay, I'm rambling BUT

I think people forget that Chuuya is one of the very few people who know Dazai. Like, actually know him past his masks. That Dazai isn't the only one who can hurt Chuuya, that Chuuya can hurt Dazai just as much. Because Chuuya knows Dazai. Knows what makes him angry and what makes him act in certain ways to some extent and can understand his plans with no words sometimes

People focus on Dazai hurting Chuuya. But nobody thinks Chuuya can strike back just as hard. You really think Chuuya didn't at some point absolutely made Dazai feel like shit to the point it made his mind spin for nights? You really think Chuuya hasn't made Dazai feel guilty at least once?

I headcanon that when Chuuya is so pissed he becomes serious his words are pure poison. I headcanon that Chuuya can hurt Dazai more than anyone else could think. I headcanon that Chuuya even has said some very hurtful things to Dazai from time to time and has regretted them terribly. That there were points when Chuuya broke Dazai right back.

Soukoku are equals in ways not many would think. They are soulmates. I'm pretty sure if there's someone who could hurt Dazai for real, it isn't even Mori, but Chuuya.

I bet they struggled at some points to understand when their bickering was okay and when it actually came too far and one or both got genuinely hurt.

Chuuya keeps much to himself, so I think everyone should be absolutely terrified for the moment he actually bursts. Genuinely bursts.

BEAST Movie Spoilers

So I did watch the early show on Dec 20, but I wanted to wait till the official release date to post this. Please make sure to read the followings before moving forward.

· This post contains spoilers, a lot of spoilers, and might be pretty detailed. Please don’t read it if you plan to watch the movie later and think that it will ruin your experience.

· There might be a few parts that I missed or didn’t remember clearly. I try to keep it as accurate as possible but I may come back after watching the movies more and fix things if necessary.

· The movie just came out today in Japan, so please be extra careful when discussing it on Twitter. Do not take too many screenshots. If you want to share it with someone, you can link them to this post. Don't repost this anywhere else out of Tumblr. I actually don't have any clear rules I just don’t want to be noticed because a lot of Japanese fans also use Twitter so please understand :(

· DON’T GO TO THE AUTHORS’ OR OFFICIAL TWITTERS TO COMMENT ABOUT THE CONTENTS OF THE MOVIE, WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT. HAVE SOME RESPECTS.

If you are okay with all the above, feel free to move on to the spoilers. I just wrote down whatever I remember, mainly the parts where the movie is different from the novel.

HEAVY SPOILERS AHEAD

· The movie didn’t show much of Akutagawa background as a kid. It started with his friends being killed and Akutagawa running off to avenge them. In the movie, Gin took a bullet for her brother.

· We didn’t get to see the scene where Oda found Akutagawa at the river bank on screen, but we got a scene of them eating curry together.

· The whole thing about Akutagawa collecting ADA’s approval stamp did not happen in the movie. The movie kept the babysitting scene and it was really sweet. He looked like a big brother to them, carrying them and asking them to help with housework etc.

· The house where the children stay was also attacked and the uncle also got stabbed in the movie. They made it look like what happened in Dark Era, only that this time Aku and Kenji appeared in time to save the kids from the kidnappers. (Honestly my heart skipped a beat here cuz I didn’t know what was going to happen to the kids).

· There was no farming scene with Kenji, but we had a new scene where Aku and Kenji met an old lady on the street, who commented on how thin Aku is then gave him a lot of stuff, telling him to eat up. He was so happy his eyes were shining.

· Kyouka in BEAST still loves crepes but no dates for her and Atsushi here ☹

· Oda is still friends with Ango. Ango works for the government and is Oda’s informant. He was the one who gave Oda information about the “man in black” that Aku was looking for. In the novel, it is said that Oda spent 3 days to look for a video of a secret meeting between Dazai and the government, so that Aku can confirm his face. In the movie, Oda also did that, but we got to see him actually breaking into the place and fighting the guards etc. That was when he met Fyodor, who gave him the data, but also slightly poisoned him (almost by the same method Ango did in Dark Era) as a warning.

· The video Oda got was not of a secret meeting as in the novel, but a video of Dazai and Chuuya 6 years ago (?) when they were fighting Shibusawa. In order to stop Shibusawa, Dazai told Chuuya to use Arahabaki but Chuuya didn’t want to because he couldn’t trust Dazai. Dazai then stabbed himself in the leg (not sure why he did that? Maybe to prove he won’t run away? I will have to watch the movie again and come back later). He asked Chuuya to believe him and said something along the line of “To protect this world, I cannot lose either Chuuya or Port Mafia.”

· There were quite of a few of flashbacks from Dark Era in Dazai’s mind. And those flashbacks always ended with him waking up in his office in BEAST.

· Dazai in the movie couldn’t keep his cool in the bar scene, as he did in the novel. He was already so emotional the moment he saw Oda. Oda was really indifferent to him in this scene. He pointed the gun at Dazai upon finding out that he was the Mafia boss, and later even put the gun on Dazai’s forehead when saying “Don’t call me Odasaku.” Dazai was on the verge of tear the whole time he delivered his last goodbye.

· Gin was really going to be executed in the movie, but the ADA came to rescue her and Aku. She also tried to kill herself with a gun (probably because she hast lost all hopes) but was stopped by Yosano. Ranpo appeared for the first time in this scene.

· In the scene where Dazai jumped, Oda was seen in the bar holding the lighter and looking up as if he could sense something.

· Atsu left PM with Kyouka as per Dazai’s order but he didn’t meet with Mori in the movie. Sometime later, he was called to a government prison (?) by Chuuya. Apparently after Dazai’s death, Chuuya became the boss. He went on a rampage (which Atsu wondered happened because of Dazai’s death) so he was captured and chained up by the government. Chuuya talked about how much of a trash Dazai was, how he looked down on people with his multiple personalities and how it was the worst of the worst to be teamed up with him etc. He waited 7 years to kill Dazai but Dazai went and died without a reason. Chuuya then told Atsushi to start a battle of revenge against the ADA, to erase ADA’s name from the phonebook and the map. Because the Mafia will have no face if they let the organization that caused the death of its previous boss to keep operating like nothing happened. Atsushi refused but Chuuya said Kyouka has accepted the offer. Atsushi then said maybe it is also Dazai’s plan for Chuuya to fight the ADA. Chuuya laughed and said something along the line of “So that mean if we keep fighting the ADA, it’s like Dazai is alive? (I’m really not sure what he means in this part. Maybe I misheard something so I will confirm later when I rewatch the movie). Even so, don’t you want to take revenge for Dazai?”. And Atsushi’s eyes looked fired up when he heard that. We didn’t get to know what happened after that.

· In the last scene, Fyodor was watching a footage of Dazai jumping off the building. It seems like he also knows the truth now. He told his subordinate that the next targets will be Atsushi and Akutagawa because having so many people know the truth will make the world unstable. He said he wants to be the only one who knows the truth. And in the last scene of the movie, Fyodor said that what happens next will be the battle to save the world and told the viewers to look forward to it.

Forgive any insensibility, but I really don’t understand why people would be upset at BSD or at the vampire arc. It seems so, so clear that it’s only a plot point, none of those important characters are going to die - the fact that it’s so many main-cast characters all infected should precisely be an indication that it’ll have to be undone. It runs long, for sure, it’s a huge-ass buildup to a rollercoaster climax and it can be a lot to take in, but I’m really not seeing anything wrong, traitorous to the audience or a single sign of bad writing, from my point of view.

BSD doesn’t make a habit of killing characters, not main-cast ones. Side characters, guards, smaller enemies, sure, but not main cast. That’s why I’m calm as ever and simply enjoying the ride!

chuuya bungostraydogs is the peak of character design because attraction to him transcends the boundaries of sexuality and gender

he’s feminine enough to attract lesbians and straight guys, yet masculine enough to attract gay men and straight girls, he’s got the charisma to charm the ace and aro folks, bi and pan folks go nuts for him, and no matter what flavor of trans you are, chuuya gives you gender envy in this essay i will…
