So this Julie and the phantom's theory I saw a while ago (I'm not sure where) and just remembered makes me want to sob right now, so the theory was that Luke's mom heard him singing unsaid Emily and just thought it was in her head. And everyone can hear them but not see them. Like don't make me cry. I'm having a really good eyeliner day!
