Kakucho prefers to stay on your left side.

It could be while sitting, standing, or walking… but he sticks to your left almost religiously. If he’s accidentally on your right side, he will correct himself. He’ll place his big but gentle hands on your waist as he take a few steps to shuffle to your other side.

It took you a while to become aware of this habit of his, and even then you hadn’t bothered to question it. It wasn’t suspicious, just a quirk or a compulsive action you assumed of him.

Still, you think about the fact that you’re much more acquainted with seeing his crimson eye rather than his clouded white one on any given day. The simple conclusion was that he probably couldn’t see well out of his left eye. Consistently being on your left was just his way of making sure he could see you better, right?

Not quite, it seems.

Kakucho never seems to sit across from you at dinner, whether it’s out or at home. He will sit to your left. It struck you as odd that he wouldn’t want to face you in such a setting where he could undoubtedly see you better. 

Even from the beginning of your relationship, you recall that Kakucho usually insists on driving if you two are going anywhere. And if he’s the one driving, he is to your left. 

This couldn’t be an issue with his vision then.

Kakucho will sit on your left at social events, he will hold your left hand when crossing the street, and he sleeps on the side of the bed that is to your left. In nearly every instance of intimacy, there’s an alarming amount of times you recollect Kakucho burying his face in your neck or your shoulder if he’s the one on top. You chalked it up as romantic, his version of closeness while you make love to each other.

But it was something else entirely.

“Kaku?” you quietly ask one night while you were both in bed, your head resting softly on his chest.

“Hm? What is it?” he responds, his eyes closed and relaxed.

“I was wondering about something,” you start, beginning to trace shapes onto his bare chest with one of your fingers. Your eyes move to look up at his face… the right side of his face.

“And what’s that, angel?” his arm around you squeezes your body closer to his in a motion of affection.

“Do you not like me looking at your scar?”

Kakucho’s body visibly tenses, and his eyes shoot open suddenly at your question, staring a hole into the ceiling of your bedroom.

But he won’t respond.

“Kaku…” you say in a gentle tone in an attempt to coax some sort of response out of him. When you prop yourself on your forearm, he turns his head ever so slightly away from you, undoubtedly to conceal the malformation on his face.

No. You weren’t having this.

Your body readjusts to move over top of him, resting yourself on his sturdy built form. “Kakucho, look at me.”

And he does, but only with his eyes, shifting them in your direction without moving his head, that one vermilion iris looking up at you that you’ve seen so much of in your time being with him.

One hand reaches for his face and forces him to look upon you, and there’s a slight pain in his gaze like he’s guilty of something. Like he’s ashamed of himself.

“It’s hideous,” Kakucho finally speaks up as your fingers softly outline the jagged mark that adorns his forehead and temple, running across the space of his eye socket that houses his one damaged eye.

Your lips move forward to leave a kiss at the top of his head, slowly moving down along the ridge of scar tissue. They’re tender, thoughtful, loving.

“Please don’t talk about the man I love like that, Kaku. It’s not nice.” 

Kakucho inhales as if he was caught off guard, looking at you fully for once with both eyes. You continue your affectionate motions until you reach his temple where his scar ends at the corner of his left eye. 

“The man I love is beautiful just the way he is. I wouldn’t ask for anything different, you know.” He relaxes a bit as you speak, his hands moving to grip your hips as if he was trying to ground himself while you assure him there’s nothing wrong with him, not at all.

“You’re silly, Kakucho. Please don’t hide yourself from me, okay?” You kiss the corner of his mouth so sweetly you think you can feel his heart attempt to jump out of his chest. 

“I want all of you… always.”

Kakucho catches your lips with his own in a kiss that he seemed to have been holding back from giving you this entire time. It’s a kiss of apology, love, commitment… and promise.

You feel him pull away slightly, leaving his lips featherlight against your own, the silver sheen of his left eye glistening against the low light of the bedside lamp.

“You are far too good to me, angel.”
