Interacting with Medieval Iceland

Just made a new Instagram account for the Hall (@Fjorn_the_Skald over there). I know it’s not the best digital map of Iceland around, but here’s the first post, which promotes my interactive map of medieval Iceland for a general audience.

It needs a lot of work, so if anyone has suggestions for improvements, please do let me know! I haven’t had much time to work on it, with the chaos of my Master’s program and all, but I hope to improve it soon!

original theory: succubi are always women, incubi are always men

facts: in fact succubus comes from the latin word “succubare” which means “to lie under” and incubus comes from the latin word “incubare” which means “to lie on”

new improved theory: incubi are always tops and succubi are always bottoms. gender doesn’t matter at all.

I don’t often give writing advice, but here is some actual, solid writing advice I 100% stand behind when writing contemporary, fantasy, or sci-fi:

Look at your side characters. Every single one of them. The villain. The neighbor. The captain. The politician. The doctor. The boss. Heck, even the animals—the horse, the dog, the cat, the creature.

If 50% of them aren’t female, why not?

Don’t default to male.

This Blog Is Unrepentantly Pro- AO3!

This blogger remembers when we didn’t have AO3.

This blogger remembers when we had to put disclaimers at the head of our fics and pray that someone didn’t take it into their heads to sue us for what we created.

This blogger remembers brilliant artists and writers getting decades of work obliterated on LJ because someone who wanted to tell people what they were allowed to create went running to someone who wanted a profit, and told them the artists and writers had been naughty.

This blogger remembers just how hard the creators of AO3 worked to build the thing we all seem to take for granted now.

This blogger watched friends dive into the creation process so heartily and determinedly that they all but disappeared from the writing/gaming/artistic side of their fandom for YEARS while they worked to make the archive happen.

This blogger remembers the sense of giddy wonder that there would possibly be LAWYERS involved, willing to defend our right to create these works, and not leave us hanging at the mercy of corporate legal teams.

This blogger is aware that she reads between twenty to fifty books’ worth of material every year on AO3, and is never REQUIRED to pay a penny for the privilege of getting access.

This blogger is aware that she will not ever see advertisements on AO3, and that her personal data and reading preferences won’t be sold to advertisers in order to raise the money that AO3 needs to pay for the services they provide.

This blogger is aware that AO3 is, and has always been, a labor of love; by fans, for fans, and not for profiting off fans – and this is what makes it unique in the whole of the media universe.

This blogger has NEVER taken AO3 for granted, and has ALWAYS been damned glad to have access to it.  Even in years when this blogger didn’t have the means to support it financially.

As for the lately siblings typing and them being Fe-dom really reminds me of why I always feel high Fe users (especially Fe-dom ones) are rather... hard-to-like. The thing about how they are extremely vocal about their dislike is actually correct and common for high Fe users I have ever met in my life...

You understand why, though, right? Fe needs and wants to address what upsets it and processes their feelings while they talk, so they do so in order to work through it, resolve it, and clear the air. They don't understand emotional repression or silence and want others to respond in kind. Most EFJs who do not study typology can't understand why other people are not more open with their emotions, both good and bad. They need and want "signals" that come from other people and their emotional reactions, in order to know where they stand with people and how to adjust their behavior to fit the situation. Their entire life is about molding themselves to fit social, emotional, and relational cues. It's as normal for them to say "you hurt my feelings" as it is for them to exclaim in rapturous delight "I love being here with you!!!" Their emotional reaction to everything is immediate -- and they are sensitive, not only to insults against themselves or slights, but other people having an impact on those around them. (You hurt my daughter/girlfriend/boyfriend/friend, you are Enemy Number 1.)

As a Fi user and a 9 who avoids conflict, I understand that they can seem "intense" and "loud" and "confrontational," but you can't change them or expect them to be different than they are. It's as unnatural for them to repress their emotions and not be direct with them, as it would be for you to talk your way through your feelings "in real time" and be combative while doing it. All you can do is try to understand them, and focus on your own growth as a 9 -- learning that not all confrontation is bad, that not all raised voices are full of rage, that it's okay for other people to engage in conflict (it's not about me), and that you are likely "over-sensitive" to them due to being a 9.

I guarantee if you find some EFJ 9s and give them a chance, you will find out that not all of them are direct. One EFJ 9 I know is super sweet, tolerant, open-minded, easy-going, and never raises her voice.

“Aw shit, I am a woman, friendless, hopeless!”

Henry VIII,  Act 3, Scene 1

Shakespeare, but every instance of “alas” has been replaced with “aw shit”

 “Aw shit, poor Yorick!”

-Hamlet, Act 5 Scene 1

“Aw shit, that love, so gentle in his view,

Should be so tyrannous and rough in proof!“

-Romeo & Juliet, Act 1 Scene 1

“O, no! Aw shit, I rather hate myself

For hateful deeds committed by myself.”

-Richard III, Act 5 Scene 3

“Aw shit, poor country, almost afraid to know itself! It cannot be called our mother, but our grave.”

Macbeth, Act 4 Scene 3
