How male victims of domestic abuse often end up getting arrested themselves

Research suggests male victims of domestic abuse are failing to report attacks for fear of being arrested themselves

Male victims of domestic abuse are reluctant to report attacks because they are often subjected to false accusations themselves, according to new research.

More than 700,000 men each year are thought to fall victim to violent attacks at the hands of their partners, but many are too ashamed to report the offences.

It was thought much of the underreporting was due to men feeling embarrassed by the stigma of being a domestic violence victim.

But new research has suggested that many of those who do come forward risk being arrested themselves, after their abusers make false accusations against them.

Dr Jessica McCarrick, a Senior Lecturer in Counselling Psychology at Teesside University, who carried out a study with male abuse victims, said they were often treated with suspicion by the criminal justice system.

She said their experiences were not only dismissed by some police officers, but they could even find themselves under arrest when their partners turned the tables on them.

Dr McCarrick said: “Men find it incredibly difficult to talk about their experiences of domestic violence because of the shame and emasculation they feel is associated with it.

“To find the courage to speak out, only to be accused of violence themselves, is incredibly disheartening and ultimately prevents countless men from reporting intimate partner violence.”

Abuse charities also claim they are finding an increasing number of male victims coming to them to seek advice after becoming the subject false accusations.

Mark Brooks, chairman of the Mankind Initiative charity, which takes calls from around 1,000 men per year, said: “Over the past ten years we have seen a steady increase in the number of callers to our helpline stating they have been the victims of false allegations.

“The type of thing we hear is ‘my wife or girlfriend has said if I leave, or tell anyone, she will say I was the one attacking her and she was just defending herself.”

“It is an extremely powerful weapon in the armoury of the perpetrator and leaves the victim feeling trapped and helpless.”

Police forces insist they are making great strides in tackling the problem with the number of women convicted of domestic abuse quadrupling in the last decade from 806 in 2004/05 to 3,735 in 2013/14.

But the problem remains still largely hidden and campaigners insisting much more needs to be done to encourage victims to come forward and have the confidence to report an offence.

One male victim who took part in the study, but did not want to be named described how he had been arrested on three separate occasions following false allegations by his wife.

He said: “In the latest incident I made the initial complaint to police as my wife assaulted me. But when they arrived, they showed little concern and instead arrested me because my wife made a counter allegation.

“I certainly feel that more compassion and empathy needs to be shown towards male victims of domestic violence.”

Dr McCarrick, said his account was not uncommon adding: “Within my research, the predominant experience is of men being arrested under false charges and their disclosures of being the victim are not taken seriously, despite having evidence.”

She said domestic abuse must be viewed as a human issue rather than a gender issue with more services and support available to enable men to seek help and support.

She added: “Campaigners and researchers made waves in the 1970’s, which had a positive impact and improved service provision for women – it is time to do the same for men.”

“Promoting awareness of the plight of male survivors may encourage men to report abuse and feel assured that they will be taken seriously.

“Intimate partner violence is an issue which affects men and women within both heterosexual and homosexual relationships and I would like to see increased funding to improve service provision and development in order to support all people affected by this issue.”

Rather than self-defense, the most usual motivations for violence by women, like the motivations of men, are coercion, anger, and punishing misbehavior by their partner (Cascardi & Vivian, 1995; Fiebert & Gonzalez, 1997; Kernsmith, 2005). For example, Pearson (1997) reports that 90% of the women she studied assaulted their partner because they were furious, jealous, or frustrated and not because they tried to defend themselves. These motives are parallel to the motivations of men perpetrators.

mcu peter sucks, im sorry

in terms of the spider-men/women/pigs, i don’t really have a favourite. however, i do have a LEAST favourite, and that is the MCU Peter Parker portrayed by Tom Holland.

The integrity of Spider-Man comes from that fact that he is a working-class hero, fights for the little guy, and his origin story.

and all that was destroyed once the MCU got involved.

the writers obviously noticed the problem, because in nwh, they rapidly back-pedaled to him being poor, making his own suits, and not having a billionaire on speed-dial to bail him out of his problems despite the billionaire still being a manipulative jackass and treating him like shit, while representing everything he stands against.

also, i did NOT like the idea of ‘mj’ being a collective spider-man gf term and just changing up the name. zendaya could’ve been mary-jane watson. michelle jones just...

but also, literally every other spider-man would’ve been team cap. plus, andrew also said so. they’re working-class heroes. to argue against that is to be wrong. i don’t blame tom!peter for being manipulated and blackmailed. i blame the writers for being assholes, and most importantly, robert downey jr for his 15 million dollar profit off of 8 minutes of mediocre (at best) acting. -(also, saying - he’s such a good actor, he’s tony in real life! - literally makes him a bad actor with no range. someone reviewed dolittle, saying that it was so bad that it seemed like rdj was trying to sabotage his own movie. and i agree.) peter was manipulated and misinformed into being team tony. there is no variation of spider-man that would EVER be team iron-man. unless they’re fckign crazy.

Very much not my normal posting but since antisemitism is very actively rising, I feel like it's worth it:

Pinely is a Youtuber who's been doing a series on conspiracy theories and antisemitism. He's Jewish himself and his videos do a good job at exploring how people fall down antisemitic rabbit holes and how conspiracy theories relate to antisemitism (he's one of the only people ive seen who, when talking about shane dawson, specifically called out how antisemitism tied in to his shilling of conspiracy theories to kids). He's also just very funny (in my opinion) and a Jewish, non-white, non-American commentary channel, which is rare and refreshing. If you want to learn more about antisemitism, his videos might be something to check out. I rarely ever see people call out antisemitism specifically in commentary videos even when they call out racism, misogyny, etc., which makes watching someone tackle antisemitism so head on very nice.

hi :)) I'm so sorry it took me a while to answer this.

just fyi I'm no expert on this since I try to avoid too much drama but I'm just going to try my best to explain quite briefly. I don't know how much you know, so here's some general stuff.

kavos - he made a lot of videos on alex and some of his friends around 2-3 years ago. alex made some back in 2017. to put it simply, kavos really dislikes alex and makes videos on him every time there's new "drama". I'm not saying alex never does anything wrong, but kavos is usually very unfair and biased when it comes to his videos on alex.

slazo - slazo was a friend of alex and they had made a couple of videos together. however, last year slazo's ex-girlfriend chey made tweets accusing slazo of rape and emotional abuse/manipulation.

she provided some DMs as proof (I'm not gonna include everything but you can probably look this up). alex together with youtubers hyojjin, kwite and kinganii (alex's ex) and others supported chey. it was later revealed that they knew about the tweets from chey before they were posted and wanted to take away slazo's influence because they believed he was dangerous. they did not consult slazo first.

however, slazo made a video explaing that most of the DMs were out of context and put together to portray a narrative. a lot of chey's stories were according to slazo, wrong. some of cheys claims he admitted to, but chey's accusations were heavy and not proven.

personally, I think some of the things slazo actually did admit to were pretty bad (watch the video if you want the details). in addition alex claimed to have heard other stories behind the scenes. although people question alex's motivations, I believe he was mainly trying to support a friend.

still, the way this was handled wasn't great. it took alex and the others a long time to "apologise", and alex continued his support for chey for a while. he got tons of backlash. kavos made videos claiming alex was a "snake", "a danger to the platform' and just a terrible person. in the end alex apologized for not talking to slazo privately and handling the situation better. this is the apology/explanation from alex.

personally, I believe this apology is good, but a lot of people don't, including kavos ofc.

recently kavos has made a video regarding the inabber/eboys drama. I have other posts about that, but keep in mind that they're my personal opinions.

anyways, this stuff isn't easy to put into just one post, but I hope this helped you ♥️

As a leftist Jew who believes strongly in the cause of dignity and freedom for the Palestinian people, and that Israel has abused them, I am begging fellow leftists to understand that real life is not a comic book. A government being “the bad guy” in a situation does not automatically make anyone who opposes it “the good guy”.

Hamas denies the Holocaust. Hamas disseminates the Protocols of the Elders of Zion—the conspiracy theory it paints is what they mean by “Zionist”. Hamas forbids foreign aid educators from teaching human rights to Palestinians, and claims that even teaching that the Holocaust happened is a war crime. Hamas has written the aim of annihilating Israel (the country and its people) into its charter—the mass slaughter and violent expulsion of 7 million Jews from the land is written into its laws.

There is no crime any state could ever do that would justify any of that; there is no act of state repression that could ever make it acceptable to side with the organization spreading Nazi pamphlets and Holocaust denial.

Oppose Bibi Netanyahu. Oppose Israel’s far-right, authoritarian government. Oppose its apartheid policies. Oppose its violent abuse of the Palestinian people. That isn’t antisemitic. But Hamas is—verifiably, beyond a shadow of a doubt, to its core—antisemitic. Its portrayal of Israeli Jews as blood-thirsty, child-killing master manipulators that control international media and finance is antisemitic. Its insistence that Palestinian freedom necessitates the death & expulsion of Jews from the land is antisemitic. Its redefinition of “Zionism” as a pejorative to mean genocidal Jewish/Israeli Supremacy is antisemitic.

Supporting the Palestinian people in their plight is a noble and loving goal; please never stop that. But do not let Hamas co-opt that into excusing or denying their rampant antisemitism and war crimes.
