Nicknames- The Unseen Prince, The Iron King by the people of Olympius
Tink by Arges, Brontes, and Steropes
My Gentle Boy by Eurynome
Master of the Forge by Hermes
Age- 17 (immortal)
Location- Lemnos, Olympius
Personality- Hephaestus is very quiet, intuitive, and introverted. He's very insecure about his looks. He's also ingenious, creative, and intelligent- striving for perfectionism. He has a very small social group filled with people that he wholeheartedly trusts. He doesn't have much of a social life and prefers it that way, instead opting to spend his time working.
Aside from a few people, no one really knows what he looks like. It's said that he has heterochromia- one eye is dark brown with the other being blue-green. He's had both his legs & an arm amputated as a child (due to his extreme physical injuries). He now has various cybernetic prosthetics (which he designed and made himself) that he wears most of the time.
Hephaestus was raised by his adoptive mother Eurynome (an oceanid nymph). He didn't find out he was adopted till he was about 13. It didn't change the way he saw or felt about her. His anger grew however when he found out the circumstances surrounding his birth (being thrown off a mountain, or so he was told...) and the identity of his biological parents- Zeus and Hera (under the shapeshift disguise as an old sailing couple he was helping out). Hephaestus ran away from Lemnos, where he was taken under the wing of the three cyclopes- Brontes, Arges, and Steropes, that are famous blacksmiths. To soften the blow, Zeus offered a down payment to jump start his businesses and after some convincing from his mom, Hephaestus accepted.
There's only one other woman (aside from his mother) that he trusts wholeheartedly- his best friend and assistant Techne (goddess of arts, crafts, & invention). He doesn't mind her offbeat and quirky nature. Hephaestus is also friendly with another associate of his, the goddess Aetna. She's the inspiration of the virtual assistant they've developed! Hephaestus is currently mentoring a young deity, Cedalion (god of smithing ore).
He's the second most busiest god in the Pantheon (after Hermes). Hephaestus owns several businesses- he oversees all the construction projects in the country, he's one of the first to heavily employ cyclopes & giants into the workforce, he has a chain of hardware stores, auto repair shops, tech repair shops, auto factories, architecture, and Hephaestus is the owner of Olympius' biggest tech corporation (iCHOR Tech)- computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones, and other electronic appliances and tools as well as a construction company (Vulcan & Co). He even has a chain of automaton toy shops. He's currently working on designs for prosthetic tails for mermaids and other water dwelling nymphs and a cybernetic eye for cyclopes who lost their eye (through disease or injury). He also has his own amusement park‐ Ember Kingdom.
Hephaestus is also responsible for crafting many of the things the gods use- he commissioned the statue of Zeus at the Lightning Harbor, he made Hermes' winged sneakers, the bows and arrows of Apollo & Artemis as well as Athena's chariot.
He doesn't have much of a relationship with the other gods in the pantheon (especially his biological parents). Hephaestus does like Hestia, having met her briefly twice. He ate up the berry mix baklava she brought him. Hephaestus does hold the Titan goddess of fire Anchiale in high regard, having met her at his induction ceremony.
He doesn't drink alcohol, but he does indulge in cigarettes, cigars, and weed. His go-to drink is iced tea.
As for romantic relationships, Hephaestus had his first kiss when he was 10 with a friend Cabeiro, who's a sea nymph. He was her date to the prom and they are still friends to this day. He's only seriously been in love once- with a mortal girl named Anticleia. She was a student at Athenium Academy and their first date was a moonlight walk through Eaglepoint Park. After two years together, Hephaestus was about to propose (with a pearl and diamond ring he made himself), but was heartbroken when he discovered that her and her family had quickly moved out of New Olympus.
To have the utmost seclusion and privacy, his main abode is inside one of the most infamous volcanoes, Mt. Etna (located on the island of Sicilios). He owns a pet dragon, a boy named Flameclaw. He also has many dogs as pets too- like bulldogs, bull terriers, dobermanns, bloodhounds, & siberian huskies. He even has donkeys as pets! Hephaestus also lives in an apartment in Lemnos- located deep underground.
He loves getting the extra hot buffalo wings with biscuits from Olympic Chef when he's in the mood for fast food.
Being the god of forge, volcanoes, blacksmiths, and fire, Hephaestus has many abilities including pyrokinesis. He can breathe and exhale fire (his fire burns a bright red and he can even get it to burn a glowing white). He can also heal others through fire. He healed many of the elderly citizens in Lemnos using this skill. His other abilities include technokinesis (manipulating technology & metal), shapeshifting into/communicating with his sacred animals, magnetism, thermal vision, ferrokinesis, and he has divine control over volcanoes, lava, & magma.
In his free time, Hephaestus really enjoys the time he spends with adoptive mother Eurynome. They spend the day swimming, scouring the nearby coves for seashells & they eat their favorite meal- broiled oysters and clams. He also enjoys being in his workshop- working on his inventions, working out, playing video games, and reading. Despite his proclivities towards lava, he has not experienced lava surfing. He has also taken on pottery & glass blowing.

Pew. Pew. Lasers in space!
Iconic movie franchises like Star Wars and Star Trek feature futuristic laser technologies, but space lasers aren’t limited to the realm of science fiction. In fact, laser communications technologies are changing the way missions transmit their data. The Laser Communications Relay Demonstration (LCRD) blasts into space this weekend, demonstrating the unique – and totally awesome – capabilities of laser communications systems.
Currently, NASA missions rely on radio frequency to send data to Earth. While radio has served the agency well since the earliest days of spaceflight, there are significant benefits to laser systems. Just as the internet has gone from dial-up to high-speed connections, lasers communications’ higher frequency allows missions to send much more information per second than radio systems. With laser communications, it would only take nine days to transmit a complete map of Mars back to Earth, compared to nine weeks with radio frequency systems.
LCRD will demonstrate these enhanced capabilities from 22,000 miles above Earth’s surface. And although the mission uses lasers, these lasers are not visible to the human eye. Once in orbit, the mission will perform experiments using two telescopes on Earth that will relay data through the spacecraft from one site to the other over an optical communications link. These experiments will help NASA and the aerospace community understand the operational challenges of using lasers to communicate to and from space.
On Earth, there are ground stations telescopes that will capture LCRD’s laser signal and send the data to the mission operations center in New Mexico. The two ground stations are located on Haleakalā, Hawaii and Table Mountain, California. These picturesque locations weren’t chosen because they’re beautiful, but rather for their mostly clear skies. Clouds – and other atmospheric disturbances – can disrupt laser signals. However, when those locations do get cloudy, we’ve developed corrective technologies to ensure we receive and successfully decode signals from LCRD.
This demonstration will help NASA, researchers, and space companies learn more about potential future applications for laser communications technologies. In the next few years, NASA will launch additional laser missions to the Moon on Artemis II and to the asteroid belt, even deeper into space. These missions will give us insight on the use of laser communications further in space than ever before.
Ultimately, laser systems will allow us to glean more information from space. This means more galaxy pics, videos of deep space phenomena, and live, 4K videos from astronauts living and working in space.
Laser communications = more data in less time = more discoveries.
If laser communications interests you, check out our Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) Internship Project. This program provides high school, undergrad, graduate, and even Ph.D. candidates with internship opportunities in space communications areas – like laser comm.

She is called the Mistress of Animals, they are under her protection which mean that learning from her and try to do the same is a great devotional activity. There are many ways to go about it: you can spend time bonding with your pet(s); you can take care of the wildlife outside your home, for example by making sure animals have space to seek shelter in your garden, or to leave water to birds in summer; volunteering at an animal shelter or alternatively; donating to said animal shelter or to any organization that takes care of animals.
This isn’t going to be doable for 99% of people reading this but I thought I should mention it anyway.
Seems in total contradiction with the idea of taking care of the animals, right? Well, there are different ways to hunt and they aren’t all equal. It is important to know that in some areas of the world, such as Europe were I live, the big predators have pretty much been exterminated so deer and boars have no threat and are free to multiply, which is a problem for the forests and the fields they damage.
Which is why controlled hunting is a good way to regulate the populations, but also to provide local meat that seems less cruel than breeding animal in cages for all their life…
However, not all methods of hunting are equal! Like hunting with hounds (chasse à courre in french) or putting glue on trees so that birds can’t fly away like they do in France is horrible and in my opinion shouldn’t be practiced!
This will highly depend on where you live and the level of nature that is available to you, so it might be a challenge to try to feel in touch with the wilderness if all that’s around you is concrete… if you have the opportunity to though, taking a walk or hiking in nature, hear the birds, touch the soil, feel the trees, try to reach for that pockets of wild free energy that’s buried within.
I think trying to understand what ties you to nature, how you are a part of it, is really beautiful and important and a way to connect to the goddess.
Obviously an important topic to all the theoi due to the humans endangering other species and their own with their actions, but Artemis as a deity of nature cares especially about that. Act, vote, work, or donate would be really great depending on what you can do. I was also thinking that topics such as making sure there are pockets of nature even within cities, such as parks where areas are left ‘‘untamed’‘ to allow insect and birds to thrive would be a really cool project. Go wild.
She famously helped her mother Leto to birth her brother Apollo, so if that’s your job too, cool ! If not, you can always spend some time with children and care for them and their mother. Alternatively, volunteering time or donating money to an organization (ex: UNICEF) that focuses on the protection children is great too.
Artemis would be with the children/teens up until they married, she is thus connected to education and crossing important boundaries and life cycles. I got the idea that writing a book for children, teaching them about the environment or sex education or whatever, would be a great way to care for them and become balanced, functioning adults. You can expand on this idea and try to think of how to educate the children/teens around you. Doesn’t need to be something big, can be as simple as showing them how the nature around them works.
Artemis is a free spirited goddess who lives a very different life from what’s expected of a woman of her time, so to me she is a role model of standing up for yourself. Doesn’t mean that you need to swear off relationships and go live in the woods with your gal pals ! To me it means learning who you are, deeply, knowing what are your boundaries, what you truly want, and make people respect that.
She is a never ending source of inspiration to me when I think of how fierce and strong she is and I see working on myself to reach that as a devotional act.
Following the same idea, honoring other people’s truth and identity, respecting other people difference even, and especially, if they are different from yours of if you don’t really get them, is a way to respect their own power over themselves. In doing so, you not only honor them but you also honor yourself.
All the deities enjoy the arts that is being made in their honor and Artemis is no exception. So use whatever skills you have and get creative !
It’s a side of her that isn’t talked about very much but Artemis is indeed connected to dancing and it is thus a perfect devotional activity ! take some time out of your day to really get in touch with your body, loosen up, get lost in the music, let your body express itself, in group or alone!
