Severus Snape: Potions master, ex-death eater and… family man?

Word count: 1.325 

Warnings: So. much. FLUFF!

It’s a known truth that your life changes when you have children. Things that used to be less than unimportant suddenly become some of the biggest concerns of your life. You shed the irresponsible, young, awake person you used to be and become a newer, more mature and so much more tired version of yourself. You become responsible for a whole life, and it is, for most people, a most wonderful thing. It’s also known that sometimes, the softness and naive wonder in a child can soften adults who were too hardened and cold from the horrors of the world. Sometimes children make you stop and look away from all the worries and bad news the world brings you, and make you focus on something so small, yet so innocent and significant, and it changes you, bit by bit. From the flowers, pebbles and doodles they give you to the way their head weighs on your chest when they fall asleep on you whilst you read them a story.

This was the case of Severus Snape, who had become the father of a daughter only a mere three years ago, but already had seen himself become softer, something his much younger self would call weak. Now he just called himself more loving, more caring and kind. His wife saw it too, occasionally teasing him about it, saying that if he kept going like this he might start handing out E’s more generously, but he really didn’t mind as much as he pretended to. He couldn’t explain how it had happened, but as he had held his child for the first time, he’d listened to her cry and thought that perhaps this had been a huge mistake, panic rising inside him until the nurse in the room had advised him on how to hold the baby, which had made her stop. And then, as if surprised, his daughter had opened her eyes and looked straight into his own with the most magnificent gaze Severus had ever seen, hitting him with the tranquillising realisation that this child was his and that it was his responsibility to keep her safe from any harm. He’d tried so hard not to let tears fall as he quietly promised to be so much better than the father he had had, promising the newborn to take care of her, even if it meant he was hurt. From then on his daughter had continued to surprise him, melting his cold demeanour, day by day.

‘Should we get the green, yellow or black tea?’ Severus’ wife pointed at each box as she listed them, then looked back to their daughter, who had her small finger in her mouth, her brows slightly frowning as if considering a grave big decision. Her deep, almost black eyes scanned along the boxes, then went back to the first one, then to the last one before finally landing on the one in the middle. She put her finger forward and pointed. Severus heard his wife mumble ‘Excellent choice’ approvingly, smiling, as she picked the box off the shelf and put it in a basket. Severus smiled a little at the scene. Truth be told, no matter how much his daughter may change him, grocery shopping would never be his thing. He always felt sort of out of place amongst the brightly coloured boxes and sharp lights.

Still, his wife had dragged him along, insisting that if anything, it was his turn to do the grocery shopping. Severus looked down as he felt a tug at his robes. He met the large, dark eyes that his daughter had inherited from him. She stretched her arms upwards.

‘Up!’ She said. Severus smiled as he picked her up and put her on his shoulders. ‘Where’d your mother go?’ He asked her. She pointed and Severus took off, feeling strangely sentimental.

Maybe grocery shopping wasn’t Severus’ thing, but cooking dinner certainly was. After dinner, it was time to start working on the thousands of assignments that needed to be graded, whilst his wife read to their daughter. It was tough, concentrating on the lists of ingredients and their purposes when the sound of your daughter babbling on about her favourite of the farm animals in the book. Chuckling to himself, Severus wrote a note and a grade, put the assignment away and began on the next one. As the pile of parchment got smaller, the sound of babbling died down, as the telly was turned on and the sound of some family-friendly movie filled the room.

‘Alright, bedtime.’ Severus’ wife said, picking up the sleepy toddler, who had been dozing off on the sofa.

‘Maybe if you’re lucky,’ His wife said ‘Daddy’ll tell you a bedtime story?’ Both the woman and toddler looked hopefully at Severus, who smiled softly. ‘I’ll be with you in a minute.’ He answered. Putting down his quill and putting the remaining papers aside, Severus stood up and made his way to his daughter’s bedroom, where his daughter was waiting for him, already having been tucked in by his wife.  The little girl was holding a book.

‘You already picked one?’ Severus asked, sitting down beside the bed. The girl nodded making a determined ‘Mhmm’ sound. Severus smiled and picked up the book. Then he opened to the first page, cleared his throat and began reading:’Once upon a time…’

‘And the princess lived happily ever after. The end.’ Severus finished. He looked up to see his daughter fast asleep. He tilted his head as he adored the toddler. What on earth could he possibly have done to deserve such an amazing daughter? He stroked her hair gently, before turning off her bedside lamp. He let the door to her bedroom stay slightly open. Outside in the living room sat his wife with a book. She looked up at him with a smile.

‘Is she sleeping?’ She asked, extending her hand, gesturing him to come closer. He did. He nodded as he sat down beside her. ‘Yes, she is,’ He said ‘If not then she certainly has a knack for pretending.’ He added, chuckling. His wife laughed lightly, then sighed happily.

‘She’s wonderful.’ She said. Severus put an arm around her. ‘Of course, she is. She has you for a mother.’ He said, earning a laugh from his wife. ‘Oh please, you’re favourite!’ She chuckled. Severus frowned a little. ‘You really think so?’ He asked, his wife nodded. ‘Yeah, she loves you.’ She mumbled fondly, there was a pause as she caressed his cheek, then she added. ‘As do I.’ Severus pulled her into an embrace, stroking her back. ‘I love you too.’ He mumbled into her hair. For a moment there was silence, with the exception of their breaths and the crackling of the fire. ‘Gosh,’ Severus’ wife mumbled, ‘Who knew you of all people would become a family man?’ She said in a whisper. Grinning, Severus softly pushed her away. ‘I’m not a family man.’ He protested. His wife raised her brows. ‘Sure you’re not.’ She said with a sarcastic tone, ‘Wanna go to bed then, Mr I’m-not-a-family-man-I-just-cook-the-dinner?’ She asked, extending her hand. Chuckling, Severus took it. ‘Yes, I do, Mrs There’s-a-reason-I-cook-Because-I-value-my-pots-and-pans.’ He answered. ‘Oh be quiet, you!’ His wife answered, grinning. Severus pulled her in and kissed her softly, then looked into her eyes and said: ‘You started it.’

As his wife laughed softly, Severus vowed to himself, much like he had done several times before, not to ever turn out like his own father and to never ever let go of the family he had. And as his wife kissed him again, he closed his eyes and knew at that moment that it was a vow he was going to keep.

Mum: Why can't you just buy the book instead of reading it on your phone?

Me: uh... cause I'm too poor and its hard to find

Also me: actually reading fanfics because my otp isn't canon on the books

Can you imagine Snape going out for a nighttime stroll because he can’t sleep even though it’s pouring rain, and as he’s walking, impervious to the storm and nearly lost in thought, he finds this cat and he figures it must belong to one of the students and he’s just thinking ‘this is no weather for a cat to be out in’ because the poor thing is soaking wet and probably freezing. So he picks it up, meaning to bring it inside, and as he’s walking this cat just starts licking his hair like it’s trying to groom him and Snape’s just like “Good Lord, cat! Who are you, my mother?” but he’s not really that upset and he brings that cat into the castle and leaves it by the nearest fireplace so it can warm up and find the student it belongs to.

Then YEARS later, long after he’s become aware that Minerva is an animagus, he’s just sitting at the staff table, eating breakfast or something, and just pauses with the spoon halfway to his mouth like ‘Wait a minute. That wasn’t a student’s cat. That wasn’t a student’s cat at all.’

Snape’s Daughter.

You’re Snape’s daughter and in order to get good with Snape, Ron wants to ask you out, (Ron’s not an ass, lol) only for you to tell him you know he doesn’t really like you and you like Hermione anyway lol

You passed Harry and his friends as you were making your way to your father’s class, when Harry stopped you. Hermione was giving you a look. “Don’t believe him”

“Hey, y/n, uh Ron wants to know if you want-”

“Want what?” Snape asked as he appeared behind him.

They jumped, Hermione just chuckled. You smiled at her.

Suddenly, she motioned for you to follow her, curiously, you did. You didn’t want to see what your dad would do to Harry and Ron..

“You shouldn’t listen to Harry. Ron doesn’t- not that you wouldn’t be worth dating-” she said gently..

Aww, she doesn’t want to hurt your feelings. What a cutie.

“Hermione” you chuckled softly. She looked at you curiously.

“People do that all the time. You know, act like they like me only to get on good terms with my dad. It’s okay..”

“It’s not okay! That’s horrible. You’re adorable and I know I’d be more than happy if you liked me”

A blush began to grow on her cheeks as she looked shocked, that she revealed her crush herself.

You were shocked. Hermione Granger, the smartest person ever and smartest witch of her age and not to mention she’s absolutely beautiful and amazing, likes you?

“I think you might just be saying that. What, want to get my father to like you, Granger?” You chuckled. Of course, you were joking. Being cautious, too.

You really liked her and no one knew, of course. But you didn’t want to get hurt.

“N-no, I mean. I want your dad to like me, sure. But if he hates me, too that’s okay, I don’t really care. I really like you and if you and I were together and he didn’t like it. Well, he’d just have to deal with it! Because, I really like you” She blushed.

“Wow”

“What? I mean no disrespect to professor Snape, of course. I uh-”

“No it’s okay. What I mean, is no one’s ever cared that much about me before.. So thank you” You grinned, happily.

Hermione chuckled, a grin on her cute face. She’s so adorable.

“Don’t thank me. Thank the fact that you’re amazing, that’s why I like you”

You blushed.

But something caught your attention, Draco was going to do something. You could see it in his smug face. But what?

That’s when you realized.. He was looking at you, with a smirk. You rolled your eyes, his threats were nothing.

Hermione looked at you confused. Before you could react he had appeared behind you, and casted an incarcerous spell on you, the ropes getting tighter, you dropped your wand. Hermione got pissed..

“Draco what are you doing?” She raised her wand at him.

“Obliviate!” He yelled, pointing his wand at Hermione after he quickly used the petrificus totalus spell to freeze her. You hopped, with the ropes still tight around you, in front of her. You began to forget your memories, who you were, everything. But at least you saved Hermione..

“No!” You heard someone scream. You didn’t know who it was, but they seemed to care a lot about you.

“Professor Snape, we can put everything back to normal-”

“I don’t care! Mr. Malfoy, you are expelled!”

You then passed out..

“Y/n!” You heard someone yell, you quickly opened your eyes, confused and, the last thing you remembered was-

“Hermione!” You quickly looked around, very worried. Was she okay?

You felt someone hug you. It was your dad.

“Dad! What happened is Hermione okay?”

“Yes, she’s fine. I was so worried about you” He hugged you tighter. You let out a groan, feeling some pain.

“Sorry.” He was checking your temperate and asking you questions only you would know. Of course, you got all of them right.

“I’m okay” you reassured. He still didn’t let go of you as Hermione, Harry, and Ron came in, very worried.

“Professor Snape, um, Dumbledore wants to see you..”

He huffed and looked at you again, checking for bruises or anything. You gave him a look.

“Dad” you whined. He sighed as he pulled away from the hug.

“Alright.” he turned to Harry and Ron. He shook his head, then turned to Hermione.

“Miss Granger, please keep an eye on y/n. I don’t really trust these two..”

Hermione nodded.

“Of course. You can trust me”

He left but not before looking at you.

“All be back, don’t worry” you smiled.

He worried too much.

Hermione then hugged you.

“Oh my gosh are you okay?! Do you need anything?-”

“No, I’m okay, but thanks”

she then pinched your arm.

“Ow! Hermione why’d you do that?”

“That was stupid don’t ever do that again.” She sighed. “But thank you.” She smiled, still hugging you.

“No problem.” you blushed as you hugged her back.

“Did you see the look on Draco’s face? Priceless!” Ron laughed and Harry snickered.

You chuckled. “Yeah, my dad was pretty mad.” you felt a bit better.

“Oh, he was furious” Hermione smiled at you.

“Get away from my daughter, you’re going to wish you hadn’t done that, Malfoy” Ron said imitating my dad. It was pretty impressive.

We laughed, cracking up.

“Well, I’m glad you’re okay”

Harry and Ron then left, something about helping Hagrid. Hermione didn’t want to leave your side, even if she could.

She kept staring at you, completely in adoration. You adored her just as much, maybe even more..

“Hermione?”

“Hmm?” She asked as you gently rested your head on her shoulder, making her smile.

“So uh, you still like me right?”

“Of course” she chuckled. Her hand touching your’s, making you blush.

“Do you want to do on a date with me?”

“Um when I get better, I mean”

“Of course, but I have a lot of studying to do.. how about a study date?”

You blushed.

“Sure. I need to study too..” You chuckled happily.

“I can help you” she offered.

“I mean you’re the smartest person ever so, I don’t think it’d be a problem for-”

“So when’s the date?”

Oh my god, it was my dad. What do I say?

“I um, when- what date?” despite Hermione being the strongest person ever, afraid of nothing, she still shivered.

“You like each other, that’s obvious..” he smirked.

You felt embarrassed right now.

“Yeah, um-”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

He looked at Hermione.

“You can go, miss Granger.”

“I’m sorry, but I won’t. You told me to keep any eye on her, even if you didn’t, I like her very much, and I’d never want anything bad to happen to her” She stated, determined.

His lip curled into a smile, well more emotion than he usually shows towards anyone that’s not you. With you, he’s a very fun person. Hard to believe, I know.

“Good.” as he left, you turned to Hermione.

“I think he likes you” you smiled.

“Really? I didn’t think so” she whispered, with a nervous chuckle.

You grinned. “Yeah, that’s just how he is”

“You’re adorable” she said, teasing you as you blushed again.

“I know she is” Snape yelled. Of course he was secretly listening.

“Oh no”

“Don’t be embarrassed, that’s cute”
