I recently ran into this problem while writing and when I did some google searches for a solution I wasn't able to find a lot. My story is written in first person and I don't know how to introduce my character's name without sounding cheesy or cliche. The "My name is [character] is so cringey but I'm not sure how to introduce my character to the reader in a way that sounds natural. Any advice?
Have someone they talk to call them by their name.Ā
Have a stranger ask them their name for a good reason (e.g. a barista or nurse).
Have them feel annoyed at seeing their name misspelled or hearing it mispronounced.
Have them fill out forms and whoever receives the form comments on the name (e.g. āOh, thatās a pretty nameā orĀ āNice, thatās my cousinās nameā etc.).
Have them respond to hearing their name or one similar to it when it isnāt them someone is trying to communicate with (e.g. Kara hears someone call out āKarenā on the street, and turns her head).
Have them mention that another person in their social group has their name (e.g. āThe other Rachel in our book club saidā¦ā).
If they primarily go by a nickname, have someone who calls them by their full name make an appearance (e.g. a sudden phone call from their mother, who insists on calling them by their birth name).
Have someone make a joke/pun with their name (e.g. a rival calling themĀ āDickā when their name is Richard).
Have something associated with them carry their name (e.g. a family business calledĀ āBob Howard & Sonsā or a vanity plate on their vehicle).
They like searching through personalized keychain racks and magnet displays to see if their unusual name is in there this time.
Have it mentioned in roll call (this oneās a bit common in a school setting, but roll calls can happen in certain other settings too).
Have them read a letter, email, or something else addressed to them.
There must be a dozen other ways. Use these to brainstorm and find one that fits your story better.

remember that time in the Manga when Roy was told to lay low bc Scar was trying to kill state alchemist and instead Mustang was like āoh no my sons.ā and ran straight at Scar instead of trying to stay alive by laying los
How could I forget itās my absolute most favorite scene in anything ever. You want to know why?
Roy Mustang is a very calculated man. VeryĀ calculated. I know we all like to pretend that heās an idiot, and sure, sometimes he is. Sometimes heās an absolute moron, but heās not about to throw his life away just to prove a point. He called allĀ attention to himself, okay? He knewĀ that it was raining; itās his biggest weakness and Roy Mustang does not do weaknesses that he canāt combat. He was perfectly aware that it was raining and he knew what he was doing. He knew what he was doing from the second that he stepped into that car at Eastern Command.Ā
So, he called attention to himself. He shot a bullet into the air and took allĀ attention away from Ed, even though Edward was currently at Scarās feet and about to die. He handed his gun to Hawkeye (who hopefullyĀ knew what he was up to or at least had a clue) and made himself vulnerable. He didnāt have faith in his abilities; he knewĀ it wouldnāt work. He made himself an easy target. Because now, Ed is forgotten about. Ed is at Scarās feet but completely forgotten. Roy hasnāt just made himself aĀ target, either. He is theĀ target. This man has been running around killing State Alchemists, saying it was against his god, so he made it clear who exactly he was and why exactlyĀ Scar should be targetting him.Ā
And it works!Ā
After all, whether they knew who Scar was or not, they knew that he was punishing State Alchemists for their acts against his god. Ed is notĀ as big aĀ āsinnerā as Roy is. And Scar, an Ishvalan who dealt personallyĀ with State Alchemists and who knowsĀ that Roy was one of the worst of the bunch, shifts all of his attention fromĀ Ed to Roy. Now, Ed is safe. And now Riza, who is better than Roy is with guns, has two of them and a drive to protect. Putting himself in danger like that was the only way to ensure that they all got out of there safely.
tl;dr Roy Mustang absolutely knew what he was doing; he purposefully put himself in danger to ensure his sonsā safety, while keeping his foolish young upstart facade perfectly in tact.Ā
Okay so I know I literally already sent you a request and you can ignore this but you did 1920s, now how about 1980s???? Roy with a mullet, Riza's hair teased up to high heaven and hairsprayed until it's hard as a rock. Edward wearing terrible punk fashion while Winry wears all those iconique fashion trends. Everyone has shoulder pads.
I LOVE YOU FOR ASKING THIS, THANK YOU <3
