I Wrote This Comic Many Years Ago, When Coming Out Seemed So Far Away. Though I Know People Meant Well,

Black and white comic page. The artist, Feeb, and her friend, a nondescript person, sit at an outdoors cafe table Narration: [When I explain my situation, people tend to tell me—] Friend, placing a hand on Feeb’s shoulder: [You don’t need to come out until YOU’RE ready!] Narration: [Which, I suppose, is not a BAD sentiment…] Feeb glances to the side, somewhat upset. Narration: [It’s certainly a better alternative to its opposte.]
Narration: [The thing is, I’ve BEEN ready— for a long time.] Feeb sits cross-legged at a large window, resting one hand longingly on the glass. A pride flag is draped like a cape over his shoulders. Narration: [The reason I haven’t come out— is because it isn’t safe.] A close up of Feeb resting both his head and hand on the glass pane, eyes shadowed over.
Narration: [when people say—] Speech bubble: [You don’t need to come out!] Narration: [It’s meant to be empowering, that it’s my choice whether I’m out or not.] Feeb sits curled up in the dark, the long shadow of a figure cast over her. Narration: [But it’s not my choice at all.]
Two cupped hands hold some loose change. Tears drip down from above onto the palms. Narration: [“Coming out” has been less something I could claim, and more like a necessity I could not afford.]

I wrote this comic many years ago, when coming out seemed so far away. Though I know people meant well, it frustrated me to hear “no need to tell anyone, it’s none of their business!” A part of me even shamefully resented those who were accepted so easily, because I knew I could never have that life.

Even though I’ve come out already, I still want this perspective to be heard. It can be really isolating and painful to have to choose between your safety and your identity.

photo of a paperback book laying on a white comforter. The cover is an illustration of a figure floating in blue, magenta, and purple blobs, stars, and shapes. A white beam points at the figure's back, fracturing into a tricolored beam of light colored like the bisexual flag. The cover reads: [WE ARE HERE AND OTHER QUEER COMICS. BY FEEB OM.]

This comic is from my collection We Are Here: And Other Queer Comics, available this weekend at MICE 2024.

I Knew I Wouldn't Get This Done, But I Was Hoping To Get At Least One Round Of Refinement Done Here Before

I knew I wouldn't get this done, but I was hoping to get at least one round of refinement done here before posting it for the event day but, alas, life and time and travel ate me.

Gotta catch those spiritual parasite fish noodlin' style!

I love this!

Perhaps they ought not to have eaten the dragon. There had been people objecting to it at the time. Surely such meat was poisonous. Perhaps it was even an affront, an insult to some intangible order of nature they ought to honour.

But the city was starving, the siege had gone on too long, and the king's troops were still a week's march away. The scorched earth would be fertile again in time, but right now it was barren. Right now there were mouths to feed. So they changed their crossbows for butcher knives and got to work.

None of the royal commanders asked any questions that could not be answered. After all, their aid had come shamefully late. The dragon's horned skull made a noble gift, a fitting tribute from a triumphant city to its humbled king. Who would have thought to question them?

And none of the townsfolk spoke up, when the first golden-eyed babes were born. Children who grew up barefoot and fearless, clambering over the city's patched and rebuilt roofs like they had no notion of falling, with a strange glitter to their skin when the sunlight hit it just so. No one breathed a word about dragons.

Because soon enough there were deft, young hands taking loaves straight out of the oven, heedlessly lifting iron from the forge, plunging into boiling laundry water. And some of them more wondrous still, wild, warm-skinned youths, with inexplicable knowledge and peculiar remedies.

A blessing, their families said proudly. A blessing after so much hardship. Which it was, in its way. This city would never fear dragon fire again.

You can be talking to someone and she'll be like, "Oh I made a silly mistake. Women don't deserve voting rights teehee." And you'll be like, "What." And she'll be like, "Oh I'm sorry! That must sound so bad out of context. No it's this Tiktok meme where, if you're a girl and you do something dumb, you say 'Women don't deserve voting rights teehee.'"

And you'll be like, "That sounds bad." And she'll be like, "No no. It's totally not that bad. It's just a meme. Men say it too. Like if a man does something silly he'll be like, 'I am like those women who do not deserve to vote.'" And you'll be like, "Does that make it better?" And she'll be like, "Well there was one guy who tried to make 'Men shouldn't vote' a popular meme. But it never caught on and also he got yelled at a lot."

And then you drop it there because like, you're harshing the vibe.

Honestly, there was kinda a sense of excitement along with the fear, like almost an escape. I think I'm just feeling trapped and wanna run away into the woods... I think I may be projecting just a tad.
