This had surely been a bad idea from the start. Your friends had wheedled and coaxed you for weeks to join them, to sneak out of your home with them at dusk to take shelter in the sacred grove on the nearby slope of Aventine for a night of drunken abandon.

The bacchanalia, they whispered. A festival of religious ecstasy mixed with a carnival of earthly delights, a gathering of outcasts and castoffs, where wine would flow and inhibitions would be left at the treeline to be shrugged back on at sunrise.

The clear, targeted implication of that last bit had you flushing hard, but you’d be lying if you said that it wasn’t ultimately what convinced you to go. Even one night to exchange the tangle of your mind for pure, simple pleasure had been undeniably appealing. The established time limit, combined with the lack of attached strings and potential consequences, had been the final selling points.

So your little group had stumbled through the streets, all hushed, breathless laughter, shawls pulled low over your heads and cloaks tucked in close. The setting sun cast the high stone walls of Rome into shadow, broken only by the flickering flames of street lights and squares of oil-lamp lit windows, the last of which fell away the closer you grew to the grove.
