Luffy sits on the shore, his face blank. Too blank. The kind of emptiness that only comes after losing everything.
You know that feeling. Itâs the same one you're feeling right now, that it's hard to breathe.
Tearing your gaze away, you turn toward the submarine where Law stands with his arms crossed, waiting. If youâre going to do this, you need to do it now.
Taking a deep breath, you step toward Luffy âLuffy.â
He doesnât look up.
âIâm leaving.â
His fingers tighten around the bracelet, knuckles white âWith them?â His voice is hoarse, raw.
You swallow hard âYeah.â
Finally, he lifts his head, eyes bloodshot but focused on you âWhy?â
You hesitate, because the real answer feels too heavy to say out loud. Because if I stay, Iâll break apart. Because the ache in your chest is unbearable, and you donât know how to exist in this world without Ace in it.
Instead, you say, âI donât have anywhere else to go... No one to go to.â
Luffy flinches, but you know he understands. Heâs feeling it too.
His jaw tightens âYou⌠you have me. You donât have to go.â
You kneel in front of him, forcing a small smile âYou have your crew, Luffy. Theyâre coming back to you. But meâŚâ Your voice wavers, and you hate it âI need time.â
Luffy stares at you for a long moment before exhaling shakily âAce really loved you, yâknow.â
Your breath catches.
Luffy grips his hat and presses it to his forehead âSo that means youâre like my sister-in-law,â he mumbles, voice thick with emotion âAnd I protect my family.â
Your vision blurs. You clench your fists to stop your hands from shaking.
âLuffyâŚâ
He looks at you, his expression serious in a way you rarely see âYouâre always gonna be my family. Don't forget it. You can come to me whenever you want and need to.â
The words nearly break you.
You force yourself to smile, even if it wobbles âThen you better take care of yourself, little brother.â
His lip trembles, but he nods âYou too.â
You take a deep breath, memorizing the sight of him, before finally standing.
Law is waiting, watching silently as you step aboard. You donât look back.
âThat was dramaticâ he mutters once youâre beside him.
You huff a weak laugh, hiding your tears âShut up.â
He doesnât push you for more, just nods toward the submarineâs entrance âCome on, Y/N-ya. Weâre leaving.â
And with that, the Heart Pirates set sail, and you leave the past behind.
The Polar Tang is⌠different. Not in a bad way, just different. Itâs quieter than the Moby Dick, smaller, and runs a lot smoother since itâs a submarine. The crew is nice enough, but they watch you carefully, like theyâre waiting to see if youâll actually stick around, and like they're afraid to say the wrong things.
You donât blame them. Youâre still trying to figure all that out yourself.
What you do know is that youâre not wearing that.
âAbsolutely not,â you say, holding up the black and yellow jumpsuit like it personally offended you âThere is no way Iâm wearing this.â
Penguin grins âAw, câmon, itâs tradition! We all wear them.â
âYeah, and you all look dumb.â You toss the uniform back at him.
Shachi snickers âSheâs got a point.â
Bepo tilts his head âBut it helps with unity!â
âI donât care.â You cross your arms âI just lost my last family. Iâm not replacing them by playing dress-up with you guys.â
Thereâs a heavy beat of silence. You didnât mean to let that slip, but itâs too late now.
Penguin and Shachi exchange glances, suddenly looking unsure. Bepoâs ears lower slightly.
Before anyone can say anything, Lawâs voice cuts through the air.
âShe doesnât have to wear it.â
You turn to see him leaning against the wall, arms crossed. His gaze flicks to the uniform in Penguinâs hands before settling back on you âAs long as she follows orders, it doesnât matter what she wears.â
You smirk, triumphant but still hiding the regrets of your previous words âSee? Captainâs orders.â
Penguin groans âMan, youâre getting special treatment already?â
Law clicks his tongue âTch. Donât be stupid. Sheâs not getting special treatment.â He pushes off the wall and starts walking away âNow get back to work.â
The others grumble but scatter, leaving you standing there, still holding your ground.
Law pauses at the doorway, glancing at you over his shoulder âYou really will be following orders, though.â
You roll your eyes âYeah, yeah, Captain. You don't have to repeat it again.â
He watches you for a second longer before walking away.
You exhale, shoulders slumping. You still donât know if this was the right choice. But for now, youâre here and thatâs enough.
Days pass, then weeks. You settle into life on the Polar Tang, though settle might be a strong word. Youâre still figuring out your place here, still deciding if this is home or just a temporary stop before the sea pulls you somewhere else.
The Heart Pirates warm up to you quickly, especially Penguin and Shachi, who have made it their mission to pester you at every opportunity. Bepo is a sweetheart, and you swear Ikkaku enjoys giving you extra work just to see if youâll complain.
And then thereâs Law.
Your relationship with him is⌠strange. Heâs your captain now, and he makes sure you donât forget it. He orders you around, assigns you tasks, and corrects you whenever you mess up. But he also lets you push back more than he probably should.
Like now.
âYouâre not getting out of training, Y/N-ya,â Law says, arms crossed as he watches you from across the room âYouâre part of this crew, which means you need to be able to hold your own.â
You sigh, sitting cross-legged on the floor, pointedly not moving âI can hold my own.â
âYou havenât fought once since you got here.â
âThatâs not true. I threw a wrench at Shachi last week.â
âThat doesnât count.â
âIt should.â
Law pinches the bridge of his nose âYouâre impossible.â
âAnd you love it.â The words slip out before you can stop them, and for a second, Law freezes.
You donât know why your heart starts beating faster. You donât know why it suddenly feels like the room is too small, too quiet.
Then, he scoffs âTch. Keep dreaming.â
You smirk, pushing yourself up âFine, fine. Iâll train. But only because I choose to.â
Law rolls his eyes but doesnât argue.
As you walk past him, you can feel his gaze lingering on you for just a second too long, and for some reason, that makes it just a little easier to breathe.
It's another day with them and dinner is as loud as always. Penguin and Shachi are arguing over who gets the last piece of meat, Bepo is calmly eating his food, and Ikkaku is scolding someone about their table manners. Itâs chaotic, messy, and full of life.
You should feel comforted by it.
But then, Shachi laughs, almost losing another game âDoesnât matter what happens, weâll figure it out! Thatâs just how we are, right? We donât let anyone mess with our family.â
Itâs innocent. Just a casual statement made as a joke for a game. But your whole body freezes.
We donât let anyone mess with our family.
The words slam into you like a punch to the gut. Youâve heard them before. Ace used to say them all the time.
âNobody messes with my family and gets away with it!â
Your breath catches.
You see Ace in your mind so clearly, grinning, full of warmth and unwavering confidence. His arm draped over your shoulders, his voice always so sure.
âYouâre stuck with me, you know. Youâre family.â
The sound of laughter around you distorts. Your hands tremble against the table. Your chest tightens so hard it hurts.
Ace said those words all the time, and now heâs gone.
Your vision blurs.
You push your chair back so fast it screeches against the floor.
The room falls silent.
âY/N-ya?â Lawâs voice is cautious, but you canât answer.
You stand abruptly, shoving away from the table as the weight in your chest becomes unbearable.
You hear Bepo call after you, but youâre already moving, already pushing out the door before anyone can stop you.
The hallway is quiet, but it doesnât help. Your heart is pounding, your breathing uneven. The walls feel like theyâre closing in.
You donât know where youâre going, just away.
But then...
âY/N-ya.â
Law.
His voice is calmer than it should be, given the fact that you just stormed out in the middle of dinner. You hear his footsteps behind you, steady and deliberate. He doesnât rush, doesnât demand you stop, but you do.
Because you donât want to be alone.
You lean against the cool metal wall, staring at the ground, swallowing down the sobs threatening to escape.
Law steps beside you, close enough that his presence is solid, grounding. He doesnât speak right away, just waits.
After a moment, you exhale shakily âAce used to say that.â Your voice is hoarse âWhat Shachi said. About family. I know Shachi was joking, it's not his fault. My mind just started thinking too much, again.â
Law is silent, but you know heâs listening.
You blink rapidly, trying to keep the tears at bay âAce always said it like nothing could ever touch us. Like as long as we had each other, weâd be okay.â
Your voice cracks.
âBut we werenât. We obviously arenât.â
And then, suddenly, you canât hold it in anymore.
The sob breaks free before you can stop it, and then another. Your shoulders shake as you clutch your arms, as if holding yourself together.
Then you feel warmth.
A hand on your back. Firm, steady. Not pushing, just there.
Law doesnât say anything, but he doesnât move away either. He lets you cry, lets you break, without judgment or expectation.
And when your knees nearly give out, he catches you, pulling you close, solid and steady, as if to say, I wonât let you fall. And for the first time since Marineford, you let yourself lean on someone else.
A few months passedâŚ
Of course, things donât magically get better. Thatâs not how grief works.
But they shift. Slowly. Subtly.
The crew doesnât bring up that night you ran out of dinner crying, not directly. But you notice how theyâre a little gentler now. Bepo always sits next to you. Penguin and Shachi tease you a bit less (but only a bit), and Ikkaku throws you extra portions without saying a word.
They donât push. They donât ask. But they see you.
And Law hasnât changed. Not exactly. He still gives out orders like commands are oxygen, still gets that narrowed-eye look when you mess up during training, and still acts like emotions are an inconvenience.
But you catch him watching you sometimes. When he thinks youâre not looking.
And when you do catch him, he doesnât look away.
Itâs a calm evening, which is rare. The Polar Tang is surfacing for the night, drifting peacefully on the open sea. Youâre up on the deck, sitting cross-legged and staring at the stars, enjoying the breeze on your face.
Lawâs voice breaks the silence.
âNot hiding in your room tonight.â
You glance over your shoulder. Heâs standing a few feet behind you, arms crossed, gaze unreadable.
âI like it up here,â you say, shrugging âitâs quiet. The stars help.â
Law walks over without asking and sits beside you, not close enough to touch, but closer than usual.
You blink âNo book tonight?â
He smirks faintly âEven I get tired of reading medical journals.â
You hum and tilt your head back to the sky âDo you ever think about how small we are out here?â
Law doesnât answer right away âAll the time.â
Silence again, but itâs not uncomfortable.
You pick at a loose thread on your pants, then quietly say, âIt still hurts.â
âI know.â
You turn to look at him âDo you think it ever goes away?â
Lawâs eyes flick to yours, and for a second, his walls drop.
âNo,â he says simply âBut you get better at carrying it.â
You nod slowly. That makes sense.
You both sit there, the silence stretching, stars spinning above.
Then he speaks again, quiet and careful âYouâve changed.â
You snort âThanks?â
âI didnât say it was a bad thing.â
You glance at him, surprised.
Heâs looking out at the ocean now âWhen you came aboard, I didnât think youâd last a week.â
You raise an eyebrow âWow. Inspiring confidence, Captain.â
He smirks again, but it fades fast âBut you stayed. Even after everything.â
âBecause of youâ you say before you can stop yourself.
Law looks at you, startled.
You feel heat rush to your cheeks but hold his gaze âYou saved Luffy. You didnât have to. And then you let me on your ship. You didnât have to do that either.â
His voice is low âI didnât do it for thanks.â
âI know. Thatâs why it mattered.â
Thereâs a long pause. Something unspoken crackling in the air between you.
You look back at the sea, heart pounding, trying to ignore how much you want him to say something, anything that will explain whatâs been growing between you.
He doesnât. Not yet.
But he doesnât move away either.
And when his shoulder brushes yours, just slightly, you donât pull back.
Two years.
Thatâs how long itâs been since you joined the Heart Pirates.
And somewhere between near-death missions, long nights on the sea, and quiet moments you didnât ask for. Something changed.
You and Law changed.
Itâs not loud or obvious. Not something you could put into words if someone asked. But itâs there.
Like the way his eyes always flick to you when he walks into a room.
Like how you always end up sitting beside him at meals, even without meaning to.
Like how his voice softens slightly when he says your name.
He still scolds you during training. Still sighs like youâre impossible when you ignore protocol.
And when youâre injured? Heâs the first one kneeling at your side. Every time. Without fail.
You donât talk about it. He doesnât either.
But itâs real. Itâs there. And everyone else knows it.
âOkay, seriously,â Shachi whispers one night as he leans over the dining table toward Penguin, âdid you see the way they looked at each other earlier? Like... looked. That was something.â
Penguin nods âTheyâre either in love or telepathically plotting a murder.â
âIâm going with bothâ Ikkaku mutters, sipping her tea.
Bepo sighs âWeâre not supposed to bring it up.â
âWhy not?â Shachi hisses âTheyâre so obvious, itâs painful.â
âBecause of Aceâ Bepo says softly âSheâs been through a lot. We wonât pressure her.â
That shuts everyone up for a beat.
Until Shachi mumbles âStill feels like theyâre circling each other in slow motion.â
Ikkaku stabs a dumpling with unnecessary aggression âJust kiss already. Iâm begging.â
You catch them watching you sometimes, too many times to pretend itâs subtle.
Whenever you and Law share a look, the whole room seems to pause.
Whenever he lingers a second too long beside you, or his hand brushes yours, the crewâs collective poker face fails miserably.
But Law ignores it all. Just keeps moving forward, like it doesnât affect him.
Like he doesnât know that your heart skips every time he calls your name in that low, measured tone.
And you pretend not to notice either. Pretend your stomach doesnât twist when he leans in too close. Pretend you donât feel the shift every time your eyes meet.
But in the quiet moments, when itâs just you and him, you feel something hanging there between you. Like something is building.
The unspoken thing between you and Law has only grown heavier by time. Stolen glances, the rare soft tone in his voice when he says your name, the way your hand always finds the spot next to his at the table.
Youâve gotten used to reading him, how to tell when heâs irritated, when heâs tired, when heâs secretly impressed. But now, somethingâs off.
Heâs quiet lately. More than usual. Locked in his quarters for hours at a time. Studying maps, muttering things you canât hear. And when you ask, he brushes it off with a flat âItâs nothing you need to worry about.â
Which, of course, only makes you worry more.
One night, dinner is unusually tense.
Shachi and Penguin whisper from across the table, not even trying to hide it anymore.
âSheâs gonna find out soon.â
âShe already knows. Look at her face.â
âShe knows something,â Bepo mutters âBut she doesnât know itâs Dressrosa.â
You set your spoon down âWhatâs Dressrosa?â
The table falls into silence.
Ikkaku winces âDamn it.â
You stare at them all âWhatâs happening?â
Nobody speaks.
So you stand, chair scraping behind you, and walk straight out of the mess hall.
You find Law in the control room, his face locked over a table full of charts. Dressrosa is circled in red.
He doesnât flinch when you walk in.
You close the door behind you âYouâre going there.â
He nods once âYes.â
âYou werenât going to tell me.â
Law straightens up, but doesnât meet your eyes âItâs not your concern.â
âIt is my concern,â you snap âIâm your crew too, just like the rest of them.â
He finally looks at you âThatâs exactly why youâre staying with them.â
Thereâs a long beat of silence. Just you and him, staring, and the space between you suddenly feels like a chasm.
âYouâre doing it againâ you say softly âPulling away. Trying to protect everyone by shutting us out.â
Lawâs expression flickers with guilt, regret and frustration.
âIâm handling it.â
âNo, youâre running. Youâre scared.â
âIâm not scared.â
âYou're not scared...â You step closer, voice breaking âYouâre terrified of letting people care about you. You think if you keep pushing us away, it wonât hurt when something happens.â
You lower your voice âBut it will. It always does.â
He stares at you, like heâs waiting for you to stop.
You donât.
âYou think I donât see what this is between us? You think I havenât felt it for a long time now?â
He says nothing.
You take a breath âYouâve given me so much, Law. You gave me a second life after Ace. You gave me something to live for again.â
Your throat tightens âAnd now youâre just gonna disappear into some revenge mission and pretend like none of this matters?â
His eyes darken âIt does matter.â
You blink âThen say it.â
Law opens his mouth, then closes it again.
You shake your head, heart cracking open âForget it.â
You turn to leave.
But before you touch the door...
âI never wanted to hurt you,â he says behind you âThatâs why I didnât say anything.â
You stop. But you donât look back.
You donât sleep that night.
You lie in your bunk, staring at the ceiling, replaying every second of that conversation. The look in Lawâs eyes. The silence where his answer shouldâve been. The ache in your chest thatâs only getting worse.
When you hear footsteps above deck a little before dawn, you know itâs him.
You throw on a jacket and follow without thinking.
Heâs there, standing at the edge of the deck, the sea wind catching his coat. Alone.
He turns slightly when you approach âYou should be asleep.â
âYou should be explaining yourself.â
His mouth twitches. A ghost of a smile. Gone in an instant.
You cross your arms âYou were really gonna leave without saying goodbye.â
Law looks ahead again, gaze fixed on the horizon âGoodbyes make it harder.â
You take a breath âHarder for who?â
Silence.
You step beside him, close enough that your shoulder brushes his arm âI meant what I said yesterday.â
âI know.â
âAnd?â
He exhales slowly âYou shouldnât love someone like me.â
Your heart lurches âYou donât get to decide that.â
âIâm not who you think I am.â
âI know who you are,â you snap âIâve seen you save strangers without blinking. Iâve seen you risk your life for your crew. For Luffy. For me.â
You pause, voice low âI love all of that. And if you leave now, and something happens to youââ
You look at him fully now âDonât make me lose someone else I love, Law. Not without even getting to hold onto you first.â
His jaw tightens. He says nothing.
So you laugh, bitter and soft âOf course. You donât say anything you donât think you deserve to feel.â
You start to turn away, tears building, when he says âI do.â
You freeze.
Heâs looking at you now. Fully. No mask.
âI do feel it. All of it.â
He steps forward, slow and certain, until heâs close enough that you can see the storm in his eyes and hear the quiet panic in his breath.
âEvery time you laugh. Every time you sit next to me without saying a word. Every time I catch myself looking at you and donât know how to stop. I feel it.â
Your lips part, but you donât speak. You canât.
âI didnât want to,â he says, voice barely above a whisper âBut it happened. And now I donât know how to leave without feeling like Iâm leaving part of myself behind.â
Your throat burns.
âSo donât,â you whisper âDonât leave like that. Not with nothing.â
He hesitates.
Then, he leans in slowly, unsure, and presses his forehead to yours.
Not a kiss. Not yet. But it says everything.
âIâll come back,â he promises âAnd when I do⌠if youâre still hereââ
âI will be.â
A breath passes between you. His hand brushes your cheek like heâs still convincing himself youâre real.
Then he pulls away.
âStay safeâ he says.
âYou too, Law.â
And with one last glance, he disappears down the dock, coat billowing, heart heavy, and not just with revenge anymore.
The moment your feet hit the ground of Zou, youâre paralyzed. The chaos of the crew bustling around you, the excitement in the air, everything feels too loud. Itâs all too much. Youâve been bracing for this moment for what feels like an eternity, but now that itâs here, you canât breathe.
Youâve heard the whispers that heâs finally back, felt the crewâs excitement bubbling up like theyâre about to burst. But nothing could prepare you for the reality of seeing him alive. You knew they won, you knew he was out there, somewhere, but seeing him in front of you again⌠itâs different.
Your heart races. The crew is already moving forward, pulling you along because youâre too shocked to even move on your own. They donât even try to hide it, they want to see this happen.
And then there he is.
The crew appears from the bushes and trees around him.
Law stands tall at the center of the clearing, his eyes scanning the crew as they move toward him, his usual cold demeanor barely cracked by the soft, almost imperceptible smile on his lips as he sees Bepo charging toward him before he could even find you with his eyes. The sight of him makes everything inside you freeze.
Itâs not that you didnât know he was alive, but now, standing here, seeing him with your own eyes, it feels real.
Bepo throws himself at Law, tears in his eyes as he cries out, âCaptain!â The hug is tight, emotional, the kind of reunion you would have imagined, one that speaks of the bond between them, of loyalty and friendship. Lawâs arms stiffen at first but then soften, holding Bepo close, the smile on his face genuine if not a bit awkward.
You stand there, caught in the wave of emotions thatâs rushing through you. Relief, yes, but something else too...fear. Fear of what this means. You havenât let yourself think about it that much, but now, with him standing there before you, something shifts. Itâs the first time in two years you feel your heart thundering like it did when you first met him, when you started noticing those little things about him, the quiet ways he showed his care.
But now⌠heâs here.
Bepo pulls back, laughing through his tears âIâm so glad youâre alive, Captain!â
Before Law can even respond, someone else, maybe Ikkaku, maybe Shachi, pulls Bepo away gently, guiding him back to the group.
And then Law finally sees you.
Thereâs a moment, a breath of time where you feel like the whole world is holding its breath. You didnât expect the distance between you to feel so large. You didnât expect to feel so small.
You stand still, unsure of what to do, your legs suddenly heavy, like theyâre made of stone. You know the crew, everyone, is watching, but none of that matters right now. Youâre looking at him, really seeing him for the first time in so long, and it feels like everything inside you is falling apart.
He hasnât changed. He still has that same unreadable expression, but something about the way he looks at you now is different. His eyes linger, and in them, you see the same thing youâve always seen, quiet intensity. But thereâs a softness now, a faint warmth.
You donât move.
You canât move.
Itâs not fear. Itâs⌠shock. You thought you were ready. You thought you were prepared. But seeing him here, right in front of you, itâs more than you can process in a single moment. The flood of emotions, the relief, the joy, the terror, all rush through you all at once, and it feels overwhelming. You never realized how much you needed this, how much youâve missed him, until now.
And then, slowly, Law begins to walk toward you, his movements steady, calculated, like heâs taking his time, giving you space. When he stops in front of you, thereâs a long pause. His eyes are searching your face, studying you, like heâs waiting for something. Youâre afraid to look into them, to let him see how much youâve been holding back.
And then, softly, he speaks âI didnât think youâd be here.â
Your breath catches in your throat, and you finally look up into his eyes. You open your mouth to respond, but no words come. The relief is too much. The pain of missing him, of not knowing if youâd ever see him again, it all comes crashing down, and before you can stop it, a tear slips down your cheek.
Lawâs eyes flicker to it, and without a second thought, he reaches out, his hand gently brushing it away âYou donât have to hide itâ he says, his voice low and careful.
âIââ You try to speak, but your voice cracks. You canât say what you need to. Itâs too much. Everything is too much.
Law stands there, his hand still lingering near your cheek, and you can feel the weight of the moment pressing down on both of you. He doesnât push. He doesnât rush. He just stands there, waiting for you to breathe, for you to find your voice.
And when you finally do, itâs quiet âI thought I lost you. IâI didnât know if I couldââ
âYou didnât lose me.â His words are simple, but they cut through the noise in your head. He steps closer, his hand sliding from your cheek to rest gently on your shoulder, the contact grounding you âIâm here. I told you I would be.â
And in that moment, you let yourself believe it.
You donât know whatâs going to happen from here, but for the first time in a long while, you feel like youâre not standing alone anymore. Law is here, and heâs not going anywhere.
Zou is loud again.
After the quiet weight of seeing Law alive, after the press of his hand on your shoulder, after the whirlwind that followed, now everything is moving. New plans are forming. Straw Hats talking over each other. Heart Pirates buzzing about whatâs next. Minks giving updates. Itâs chaos. Familiar chaos. The kind you hadnât realized you missed.
You find Luffy just outside one of the tree dwellings, scarfing down food like he hasnât eaten in weeks, which, to be fair, is probably true.
âLuffyâ you say, your voice unsure but soft.
He looks up, mouth full âY/n!â He jumps to his feet and wraps you in the kind of hug only Luffy can give, tight, fast, and a little chaotic âYouâre okay! Youâre really here!â
You nod against his chest, your throat tight âYou tooâŚâ
âOf course I am!â he grins like itâs the most obvious thing in the world âI knew weâd all meet again. I told you!â
He pulls back and beams at you âWeâre gonna get Sanji back. Me, Nami, Chopper and Brook. You should come too! With me!â
You freeze.
Your eyes dart past the Straw Hats, past the Heart Pirates, until they land on him. Law is leaning near a shaded post, arms crossed, watching the scene from a distance. You can feel his eyes on you.
You start to answer Luffy, but someone else cuts in.
âSheâs not going.â
Itâs Law.
Heâs walking toward you both now, slow and steady, like the decision was already made before this conversation even started.
Luffy blinks âHuh?â
Law stops beside you, his shoulder brushing lightly against yours âSheâs staying with me. With the Heart Pirates.â
You look up at him, startled. You hadnât even told him you would yet. But heâs not looking at you, heâs looking straight at Luffy.
Nami steps closer, eyebrows raised like she knows exactly whatâs going on âLuffy, read the roomâŚâ
Luffy blinks again, slowly turning to you âWait. What? Since when?â
You open your mouth, but the words donât come.
âIââ You shake your head âI was going to tell you. I just⌠I didnât know how.â
âWhy not?â Luffy tilts his head, confused as ever âYou like Law, right?â
Your eyes widen âLuffyâŚâ
âItâs fine,â he says with a shrug âI mean, I get the way youâre looking at him right now. I just didnât know it was, you know⌠like that like that.â He grins.
You stare at him, stunned âYouâre not⌠mad?â
âWhy would I be mad?â he says, blinking like the very idea is weird âYou think Ace would be mad?â
You swallow hard, throat tightening at the mention of Aceâs name.
âI just...â Your voice cracks âI didnât want to disappoint him. Or you. He⌠he loved me. And I loved him. And I didnât think Iâd ever be able toââ
âY/n.â
Luffyâs voice is soft. Even softer than usual.
He smiles again, big and warm and bright âAce would be happy. Really happy. Because youâre not alone anymore. He wouldnât want you to be.â
You blink fast, trying to keep the tears back, but itâs no use âYou really think so?â
âI know so,â Luffy says, tapping his chest âBecause Ace told me you were the best thing that ever happened to him. He said if anything ever happened to him, I had to take care of you. You found someone who can take care of you even better than me, and Iâll always support you like my sister.â
That breaks something in you. You cover your mouth with your hand, trying not to cry outright.
Nami steps up beside Luffy, resting a hand on your back âHeâs right, you know. Weâve all known for a while now. About you and Law. After we met Law and Luffy asked him about you, it was pretty obvious even if the man here has the most unreadable face. Itâs just Luffy that is always too oblivious.â
Law, still at your side, hasnât said a word. But his presence is steady, anchoring. His eyes stay on you.
Luffy grins and throws his arm over your shoulder, dragging you into another hug âIâm happy for you, Y/n. And Ace would be too.â
You press your face against his chest again, this time not hiding the tears âThank you.â
Law leans in slightly, his voice low near your ear âYou didnât have to be scared.â
You glance up at him, smiling through your tears âI know. But it still scared me.â
âI get it,â he says âBut you donât have to worry. And you can talk to me about your fears, I wonât leave you alone.â
And somehow, for the first time, you believe it.
The sun is dipping behind the massive trees of Zou, painting everything in golden light. The others are gone now, off to find Sanji. The moment they disappeared over the horizon, the world got quiet again.
Too quiet.
You sit at the edge of the overlook, watching the sky shift from orange to deep indigo. The wind brushes through your hair, soft and cool. You hug your knees to your chest, letting yourself breathe for what feels like the first time in days.
And then you hear his footsteps behind you.
âYouâre always out, watching the sky when it gets darkâ Law says, voice even.
You donât look at him, not yet âItâs peaceful. Beautiful. Easier to think.â
He stands beside you for a second, silent, then sits down next to you with a small sigh. The space between you hums. Not touching, but not distant either.
You glance over. His hatâs off. That always does something to you. Makes him look realer. Softer. More⌠him.
âYou really told Luffy I was staying with youâ you say, a small smile tugging at your lips âDidnât even bother ask me.â
âYou were going to stay anywayâ he replies, tilting his head toward you.
âI mightâve,â you murmur, teasing âMightâve said no. Mightâve gone off on my own. Who knows.â
He looks at you, dead serious âYou wouldnât.â
You meet his eyes âHow do you know?â
âBecause youâve looked at me the same way I look at you. You wouldnât want to separate again.â
Your breath catches.
The silence after that is thick, like the air itself is holding its breath with you.
âI was scared,â you whisper âOf what it meant. Of what it felt like. After Ace⌠I didnât think I was allowed to feel this way again.â
âI know,â Law says, just as quietly âThatâs why I never pushed.â
You look down at your hands âBut you stayed.â
His voice is steady âI wasnât going to be another person you lost.â
Thatâs when your heart cracks, but in a good way. The dam youâve been holding back breaks just a little. You turn to him, really look at him. The way the fading light touches his face, the faint worry in his brow, the way heâs looking at you like youâre everything.
âSay it,â you breathe âJust once.â
Law doesnât hesitate âI love you.â
And youâre already leaning in by the time he says the last word.
The kiss is slow and gentle. His hand cups the side of your face, thumb brushing your cheek. Yours clutches his coat, grounding yourself.
Itâs not desperate. Itâs relieved.
When you finally pull back, your forehead rests against his, both of you a little breathless.
You whisper âI love you too.â
He smirks âYou were worth the wait.â
Your smile widen and just as his small smile/smirk.
âFINALLY!â
You both flinch apart like you were struck by lightning.
Law whips around, eyes narrowing âWhat the hellââ
From behind a cluster of bushes near the edge of the clearing, three heads pop out in rapid succession: Shachi, Penguin, and Ikkaku. Bepo follows a second later, way too big to be hiding, but he tries anyway.
âWe knew it!â Shachi shouts.
âI said it would happen today!â Penguin crows, fist-pumping like he just won a bet.
âI told you she was gonna make the first moveâ Ikkaku says smugly.
âYou literally did notâ Penguin says.
Bepo tries to look innocent âI was just... uh... making sure they were okayâŚâ
You bury your face in your hands, heat flooding your cheeks âOh my god!â
Law groans, dragging a hand down his face âHow long were you there?â
âLong enoughâ Ikkaku grins.
âTo hear everythingâ Shachi adds.
âI hate all of youâ Law mutters.
âDonât lie to us, Captain,â Penguin says, smug âYouâre glowing.â
âI am not glowing.â
âYou kind of areâ Bepo mumbles.
You let out a breathy laugh, cheeks still flushed, but honestly, itâs kind of perfect. This dumb, messy, ridiculous crew, you didnât know how badly you needed them until they showed up in your life. Until he showed up in your life.
âAlright,â Law snaps, pushing to his feet and brushing off his coat, âYou saw what you wanted. Now go. Before I use Room.â
That gets them moving fast.
Shachi and Penguin scramble like cockroaches, dragging Bepo behind them while Ikkaku throws a wink over her shoulder âYouâre cute together! Donât screw it up!â
They disappear, giggling like kids.
You turn back to Law, trying not to laugh âSo⌠that happened.â
He sighs, but thereâs the faintest smile tugging at his lips âWeâre never gonna hear the end of it.â
âNope.â
A pause.
ââŚStill worth it?â you ask, teasing.
He glances at you. And then, softly âAlways.â

You sit near the railing watching Zoro from across the deck.
Heâs lying on his back under the mast, one arm slung behind his head, eyes closed, but you know heâs not asleep.
Itâs been months, or maybe even longer, since you started looking too long when he trained shirtless in the sun. Since you started noticing the way his voice drops when heâs serious, the way his brows furrow when heâs annoyed. Since you realized your heart does stupid flips when he calls your name in that lazy, gravel-deep voice.
He never notices. Not the way you notice everything.
He doesnât know that you make him an extra rice ball at lunch because he always wants seconds, even if Sanji starts complaining. He doesnât know you patch up the seams of his bandanas when they start to fray. He doesnât see the way you look at him like heâs something holy, somehow both untouchable and familiar.
And itâs fine, or at least you tell yourself itâs fine.
âOi.â
You blink and turn. Heâs standing right behind you now, towel over his shoulder, swords glinting under moonlight âYou spacing out again?â
âIâno, just thinking.â
Zoro stares at you, then leans against the railing beside you like itâs nothing. Like being close doesnât twist your insides into knots âDonât think too hard. Youâll overheat.â
You laugh softly âThanks for the advice, Mr. âAll Brawn No Brainâ.â
âTch.â He doesnât even pretend to be insulted âAt least I donât sit around staring at people.â
Your heart stops. Just for a second.
Did he notice?
Guess no because heâs already turned away, already yawning like the conversationâs over. Like your entire world isnât spinning.
Weeks later you are all on Sabaody Archipelago when the island becomes hell, full of chaos. You expected tension. You didnât expect the world to start cracking apart at the edges.
The ground shakes with every step Bartholomew Kuma takes. Everythingâs falling apart. Again.
Youâre standing with the crew, breathing hard, bruised, blood on your temple, and Zoroâs right beside you. The air tastes like ozone and smoke. Pain screams in every bone, but you hold your stance anyway.
Zoroâs stance is steady, swords drawn, chest rising and falling. Heâs ready to fight, even when itâs hopeless. He always is.
âGet backâ he mutters, low enough for just you to hear.
You grip your weapon tighter âNot a chance.â
His eyes flick to you, just for a second.
Not long enough.
âKumaâs not humanâ Franky shouts from across the field âWe canât beat him!â
âWe have to try!â Luffy yells back.
It happens fast⌠too fast.
One flash of light. One massive hand. And then Poof.
First itâs Sanji.
Then Chopper.
Then Franky.
(I donât remember the exact order, bare with me if I forget to check before posting lmao)
Gone. Like smoke in the wind.
âNo⌠NO!â you scream, running forward, but Zoro grabs your arm and pulls you back hard.
âStay behind meâ he growls.
You should say it now, before itâs too late.
âI love youâ You swallow the words.
Then Kuma steps forward again.
âRoom.â
You donât hear it but you feel like a buzz in the air, a coldness at your back. And then, suddenly, youâre not behind Zoro anymore.
Youâre inside a glowing sphere. The world around you slows, like someone turned the volume down on the chaos. You spin, breath caught in your lungs.
âTrafalgar Law, right?â
He stands a few paces away, hat casting a shadow over his gold-ringed eyes, hand lifted.
âWhatâWhat are you doing? What did you do?â
âGetting you out.â
Your heart slams in your chest âI canât leave! I have to go back. Zoroâs stillââ
âI saw him.â His voice is low. Calm âYou know heâs the next one and you canât do anything.â
âNo,â you whisper. Your fists shake âHeâhe doesnât even knowââ
Law watches you carefully âBut you do.â
You turn, trying to run back toward the others but Kumaâs hand is already over Zoro, light bursting around him like a nova.
And then heâs gone.
Just like that.
âNO!â You scream, stumbling forward, but Law grabs you and pulls you against him.
âDonât waste itâ he murmurs against your hair âYou got lucky you werenât far enough for me to reach you.â
âI didnât want luck,â you breathe âI want them back.â
Later on you wake up to a low hum. Not waves. Not creaking wood. Something colder. Something deeper.
Your eyes snap open. The room is dim, lit only by a strip of soft light lining the metal walls. Youâre not on the Thousand Sunny anymore.
âWhereâ?â
You try to sit up too fast, pain flaring in your ribs. Your voice is hoarse.
âCareful.â
You turn. Law is standing near the door, coat off, arms crossed over his chest. His tattoos catch the low light like ink on porcelain.
âYou passed out,â he says âShock, maybe. Or blood loss. Or both.â
You sit back slowly, memory returning in fragments.
Sabaody. Kuma. Zoro.
All of your crew⌠gone.
You close your eyes, chest rising with a shaky breath âYou shouldnât have pulled me out.â
Law says nothing.
âI wouldâve ratherââ You donât finish the sentence.
He watches you for a long time. Then âI know.â
Thatâs it. No lecture. No pity.
He just says it like a fact. Like someone who understands what it means to lose everything in a single heartbeat.
The next few days pass in a blur.
The Polar Tang is too clean. Too quiet. The crew is polite but distant. You eat in silence. Sleep too much. You try not to think them, of Zoro, you try not to remember the way he stood in front of you before Kuma could reach you.
Try not to remember that he never even turned around to see if youâd followed, widening his eyes when he realised you disappeared like that.
Law keeps his distance. He doesnât ask questions. Doesnât comfort you. But you catch him watching sometimes.
When you forget to eat, he sends food without a word.
When you sit in the med bay too long staring at nothing, he walks in, grabs supplies, and walks out again, without breaking the silence.
You wish you could hate him for pulling you out. For saving you when no one else made it.
But you donât. You canât.
Because in those rare moments when he looks at you, you feel like maybe heâs just as lost.
One night, youâre in the observation room, staring at the ocean through a round porthole. You donât hear him come in.
âI keep seeing it,â you say softly, not turning around âZoro⌠the way he disappeared. I didnât even say anything.â
âYou wouldnât have had timeâ Law answers.
You let out a hollow laugh âI had years, actually.â
That shuts him up.
You finally look over your shoulder âYouâre not going to tell me Iâll move on?â
âNo.â
âWhy not?â
He pauses, then shrugs âBecause I wouldnât.â
The words hit harder than you expect. You swallow.
He steps closer, hands in his pockets, voice low âI didnât save you for you, you know.â
Your breath catches âWhat does that mean?â
Law meets your eyes for half a second. Then he shakes his head.
âForget it.â
He turns to leave.
You almost call out to him, ask him to stay, but you donât.
Because Zoro never said what you needed to hear. And now Law wonât either.
Days pass. Maybe weeks. You donât count them.
The crew leaves you alone. Law doesnât.
Not in an obvious way, he never lingers too long, never asks too much. But heâs always there, hovering at the edges of your grief like someone whoâs used to ghosts.
And Zoro is a ghost. Not dead. Not gone forever. But still gone.
You wonder if he thought of you before he disappeared. If he was scared.
You dig your nails into your palms and force your mind blank.
Law, standing across the room, doesnât comment. But you know he notices.
Later, at night, you go sitting on the cold metal floor in the lower deck, knees tucked to your chest.
Lawâs voice cuts through the silence.
âYou keep sitting in dark corners like that, and someoneâs gonna think you died.â
You huff a quiet laugh, not looking up âMaybe I did.â
He doesnât respond right away. Then he says âThatâs not how it works.â
You finally glance at him. Heâs leaning against the doorframe, arms crossed, unreadable as always.
âHow does it work, then?â you ask âLosing people?â
Law exhales, slow âLike an open wound. You live with it.â
Your throat tightens.
âYou ever lost someone?â you ask before you can stop yourself.
His jaw shifts slightly.
âYes.â
The weight of it sits between you.
You donât ask who.
He doesnât ask why youâre asking.
The silence stretches, but this time, it doesnât feel empty.
You donât realize how long he stays there until you finally stand up, lightheaded, exhausted, and he just⌠turns and walks away.
Like he was only there to make sure you got back up at all.
Another week passes, maybe?
You start eating more. Sleeping less.
The crew stops treating you like a ghost. Bepo tells you stories. Shachi and Penguin try to drag you into their dumb arguments. And Law still keeps his distance.
But one night, when you wake up from another dream where they disappear right in front of you, you stumble into the hallway, breath shaky, and heâs already there. Like he knew.
He doesnât touch you. Doesnât say a word.
Just stands there, hands in his pockets, eyes sharp in the dim light.
And for the first time since Sabaody, you donât feel completely alone.
Itâs chaos. Worse than Sabaody.
The battlefield burns, the sky cracked open by fire and screams. Bodies fall. The ocean churns red.
You stand on the deck of the Polar Tang, numb, gripping the railing so hard your knuckles go white. You donât blink. Donât move. Because if you do, you might break apart completely.
âLuffy!â
Heâs right there.
Not an echo. Not a dream. Heâs alive, stumbling forward with Aceâs lifeless body still clutched against his chest, screaming so raw and broken it rips through you.
Your throat closes. You feel sick.
I should have been there.
You donât realize youâre crying until a hand closes around your wrist.
âGo insideâ Law says, voice quiet but firm.
You shake your head wildly âNo! I have toââ
âYouâll only get in the way.â
The words cut deep, but you know heâs right.
This isnât your fight anymore. It was never yours to begin with.
When itâs over, you sit beside Luffy in the Polar Tangâs infirmary. Heâs unconscious, face pale, breath shallow.
Tears slip down your cheeks, silent and endless.
âIâm sorry,â you whisper âIâm so sorry.â
You donât hear Law approach, but suddenly, his shadow stretches across the dim room. He doesnât say anything, just watches.
After a moment, he kneels beside you.
âHeâll liveâ he says simply.
You press a hand over your mouth, nodding shakily.
Law stays kneeling there for a few seconds longer, like he almost wants to reach for you. But then he stands, and the moment is gone.
Two weeks later Luffy stands on the shore, fists clenched.
âIâm going to trainâ he says âFor two years.â
You nod, already knowing.
Then he turns to you âYou should train too.â
Your breath catches âWith you?â
âNo.â Luffy shakes his head pointing slightly and fast at Law âWith him.â
Your stomach drops âLuffyââ
âYouâre not strong enough yet...â he says, no hesitation, no softness âNone of us were.â
You flinch.
Luffy doesnât mean to hurt you, but heâs right. You werenât strong enough. Not to stop Kuma. Not to fight in Marineford.
Not even to keep Zoro in your life.
You turn to Law, who watches you in that unreadable way of his.
âYou want me to stay?â you ask.
He shrugs âYour captain does.â
âAnd you?â
Something flickers in his eyes, quick as lightning. But then itâs gone.
âWe leave tomorrow.â
Thatâs all he says and you donât argue.
Luffy waves from the shore one last time, grinning even though heâs still healing, even though everythingâs shattered.
âTrain hard!â he yells âDonât die!â
You wave back. Smile. Fake it.
âSee you in two years, Captain!â you say.
He disappears into the jungle with Rayleigh at his side.
And thatâs it. Luffyâs gone.
The last thread connecting you to the Straw Hats...
You donât make it far. Maybe ten steps onto the Polar Tang before your knees buckle.
You sink to the floor in the hallway, fists clenched, trying to breathe.
Theyâre all gone. And Luffy, your captain, your anchor, isnât the one you have to follow now.
Your whole chest aches with the weight of them, and Zoro... who never even looked back at you in the same way you looked at him.
Your hands shake. You press them to your mouth, try to swallow the sob, but it bursts out anyway.
You donât hear footsteps. But suddenly Law is there, crouched beside you like heâs been waiting.
âLet it outâ he says, voice low, steady.
You cry harder.
Ugly, gasping sobs that have been locked in since Sabaody. You curl into yourself, and he doesnât touch you, he just stays.
You donât know how long it lasts. Minutes. Maybe more.
When your breathing finally evens out, you whisper âI didnât want to go with you.â
âI know.â
âI wanted to stay with them.â
âI knowâ he says again. But itâs softer this time. Almost careful.
You look up at him, eyes swollen and wet âWhy did you even save me?â
He doesnât answer. Just stands and offers a hand.
âCome on. Iâm training you. Start now.â
Day one, training begins and youâre sore within an hour.
Law doesnât go easy on you, not out of cruelty, but because he doesnât believe in easy.
He corrects your stance with a flick of his sword, shoves your balance when itâs off, tells you when your swings are weak. But he never mocks. Never smirks.
And when you collapse into the dirt, gasping for breath, he tosses you a canteen and says:
âYou did better than yesterday.â
ââŚItâs the first day.â
He shrugs âIâm setting the bar low.â
It almost makes you laugh.
That night, you stare at the ceiling of your bunk, arms aching, mind fogged with exhaustion.
And you realize Law couldâve left you behind. Couldâve dropped you off somewhere from the beginning. But he didnât.
Heâs not kind. But heâs constant. Present.
You fall asleep thinking of Zoro.
But just before your dreams take you, you actually see Lawâs eyes, calm and steady, and feel just a little less alone.
Month one, and Law doesnât hold back.
He pushes you until your muscles scream, until youâre too exhausted to think. Maybe thatâs the point, maybe he knows youâd drown in your own thoughts if he let you rest too long.
At night, you collapse into your bunk, body bruised, mind blank.
And sometimes, when the nightmares come, heâs already awake. He never says anything. Never asks. But if you step outside to breathe, heâs always leaning somewhere out there, pretending itâs a coincidence.
Month three, and training drill goes wrong. Your foot slips, and you hit the ground har, too hard. You try to get up, but your vision sways.
Law is there in an instant as he kneels beside you, eyes sharp with something you almost donât recognize. Worry.
âYou hit your head,â he mutters, scanning you âIdiot.â
You blink up at him, dazed âYou care.â
His hands still for half a second.
Then he scoffs, expression smoothing into something unreadable âDonât flatter yourself.â
But when he helps you stand, his grip is steady. Careful.
Month eight, Lawâs sword crashes against yours, and your blood thrums with the fight, and when you smirk at him, he smirks back.
Not mocking.
Not cold.
Just something warm.
The moment is gone too fast. But that night, lying in bed, you realize you stopped thinking about him that much.
Year one, and you have your first real battle of your time with the Heart Pirates. A raid gone wrong.
Youâre cornered, outnumbered, bleeding, one knee on the ground.
And then shink. A blade flashes.
When you look up, Law is standing over you, sword drawn, eyes dark with something dangerous.
You breathe hard, staring up at him âYou...â
âIdiot.â His voice is sharp, but his hands, when he helps you up, are steady âYou were reckless.â
âYou saved me again.â
âTch. I told you before.â he mutters, gripping your arm âDonât flatter yourself.â
But that night, when you pass out from exhaustion, you swear you feel someone pull a blanket over you.
Itâs weird. You donât remember when it started, when the metal walls of the submarine stopped feeling cold.
You laugh easier these days. Mostly because of the crew.
Bepo makes dumb jokes that hit way too hard when youâre tired. Penguin and Shachi bicker like toddlers. Youâve been caught in the middle more than once.
âYouâre taking my side, right?â Shachi demands.
âShe likes me moreâ Penguin argues.
You just smirk âBepoâs the only one with a brain. Iâm staying on his side.â
They groan in betrayal. Bepo beams.
You catch Law watching from the upper deck, arms crossed, leaning against the railing like heâs not paying attention, but you know he is. He watches a lot now. He listens when youâre laughing, eyes sharp, expression unreadable. Not because heâs annoyed, but because he knows the clockâs ticking.
Soon, youâll leave.
He doesnât say it. He never would.
But you see it in the way he looks at you like heâs memorizing it all.
And what makes it worse is that with time youâve gotten even bolder. You tease him now, just to see if you can crack that calm exterior.
âLaw,â you lean across the table with your chin in your palm, âhave I finally impressed you yet?â
He doesnât even glance up from the reports âNo.â
You grin âLiar.â
He looks at you then. Just briefly. But thereâs something dangerous in his eyes. Warm and annoyed.
âYouâre becoming a nuisanceâ he says.
âAnd yet,â you whisper with mock drama, âyouâve never kicked me off your ship.â
His jaw ticks. You love it.
You turn away smiling, leaving him there, stoic and silent, pretending you didnât just get under his skin again.
He watches you walk off, fingers tapping once against the table, tension in his shoulders that has nothing to do with the reports.
Year two, you still think about Zoro, but your heart is quieter now.
You donât think of him every night like before.
And that realization actually terrifies you. Because youâve spent years thinking of Zoro.
And somehow, without meaning to, without wanting to, you started looking at someone else.
Two years vanish in the wind.
Your boots hit Sabaodyâs soil.
Same place. Same light in the sky. But nothing feels the same, not the way you stand taller, breathe steadier, walk with quiet strength instead of wide-eyed hope.
The crew is here.
Your crew.
Luffyâs laugh is the same. Usoppâs dramatic wailing makes you snort. Nami nearly tackles you in a hug.
Sanji cries actual blood when he sees you. Chopper does his little spin.
You smile so much your face hurts. But your heart stays still.
Because heâs not here.
Not yet.
You hear the footsteps behind you first. Steady. Heavy. Familiar.
You turn and there he is.
Zoro.
Heâs taller. Broader. Scars you donât recognize. A presence so solid it makes the air shift.
His gaze snaps to yours, and it holds. No blink. No hesitation.
Your breath catches.
âHeyâ you whisper.
Itâs barely a word. Barely a sound.
Heâs staring like he hasnât seen anyone else since the day you disappeared.
ââŚYouâre aliveâ he says. Voice low.
You nod âSo are you.â
A beat.
He steps forward, and for a second you think heâs going to touch you. Say something. Anything. But he just stops a foot away.
ââŚYou look stronger.â he says.
You blink, a laugh slipping out thatâs part broken, part breathless âTook me long enough.â
He doesnât smile. Doesnât look away. Just says âI looked for you.â
Your heart slams.
âWhat?â
âWhen we got back.â He says it like itâs nothing âI looked. Didnât stop for months. Thought you were dead.â
You try to swallow, but your throatâs tight âIâI was with Law.â
His jaw tenses âYeah. I heard.â
Silence stretches between you.
He looks the same, but not really. He feels different. Like the sharp edges are still there, but dulled by time. Regret.
And youâre not sure what you feel, because for these two years, Zoro haunted you. And now heâs here, real and solid and late.
He shifts closer again, eyes flicking over your face âYou okay?â
You nod, barely âYou?â
âBetter now.â he says, almost too low to hear.
You donât answer. You canât.
Because behind you, someone calls your name.
You turn, just enough to see Law, standing off to the side, watching. Zoroâs gaze follows yours.
And the moment breaks.
Law finds you leaning over a crate on the dock, hands smudged with oil from helping Franky. The sunâs setting, orange light stretching long across the sea.
âYou leaving already?â you ask, tossing him a crooked grin.
He nods âI did my job and you're here now. My crewâs waiting.â
You straighten up. Suddenly, it doesnât feel like just a goodbye.
âOh.â
He doesnât meet your eyes âYouâre back where you belong.â
You hate how your throat tightens âLaw...â
âI donât regret itâ he cuts in, voice low âAny of it. Saving you. Training you. Keeping you.â
You stare at him, heart thudding.
âI donât say things I donât meanâ he says, eyes flicking up to meet yours.
"You usually don't talk much at all."
âThen take this as a rare moment of honesty.â
You laugh a little, shaky âOkayâŚâ
He steps closer, close enough that your shoulders nearly touch âYou were never just someone I saved.â
The world tilts. You donât breathe.
âYou're back with them nowâŚâ he hesitates, swallows, âWith him... as you always wanted.â
Thatâs when it hits you.
The shift in your chest. The ache youâve been ignoring. The weight behind every time you teased him. Every time he didnât laugh, but stayed.
You look up at him and itâs all over your face.
Law sees it.
You donât say anything. You canât. Because itâs too late.
So you just nod, eyes shining.
âGoodbye, Law.â
He looks at you one last time, as if memorizing it. Then he turns and leaves.
Zoro watches from the shadows. He doesnât mean to. But he sees it all.
The way you stand still long after Law disappears from sight.
The way your shoulders tremble, just once.
And, worst of all, the look you gave him. That soft, broken, aching look.
Zoroâs chest goes tight, because he knows that look. You used to give it to him, back when he was too blind to see it.
Now, he sees it clear as day, but itâs not for him anymore.
Later that night, he tries anyway.
He finds you on the deck, alone, arms wrapped around yourself.
âCan I talk to you?â he asks.
You turn slowly. Smile tiredly âSure.â
He steps closer. Hesitates. Then âI meant what I said. I missed you. I still do.â
You blink, surprised âZoro...â
âI didnât know how to say it back then. But I do now.â
You look at him, really look, and something in your face flickers.
Soft but sad.
âI waited a long timeâ you whisper.
âI know.â
âAnd nowâŚâ you trail off âNow, I donât know what I feel.â
He nods, jaw tight âBut I do.â
You close your eyes âIâm sorry.â
And thatâs it. Heâs too late.
Zoro isnât good with words, but he can do actions. So he sticks close.
He stands by you during battles. Helps you sharpen your blade even when you insist you can do it yourself. He throws his jacket at you during a cold night on deck without saying a word.
You stop flinching when he shows up.
You stop looking away so quickly.
Thatâs progress, right?
One night, he brings you food. He sets it beside you with a quiet, âEat. You skipped dinner.â
You glance up âDidnât think you noticed.â
âI notice a lot more now.â
Your eyes meet his. Thereâs warmth there, brief, flickering. And Zoro clings to it.
He doesnât say the words again. Not yet. He knows now that words have weight. That the next time he confesses, it canât be casual. It canât be a maybe.
So he waits.
Watches.
Hopes.
Youâre softer with him. You laugh sometimes. You donât run anymore. But you also donât reach for him. Not the way you used to.
Weeks pass. Battles come and go. And with every scar, every shared glance, every late-night conversation, Zoro starts to think.
Maybe this time heâll be enough.
Maybe youâre still finding your way back.
Then Punk Hazard happens. The fog. The cold. The chaos.
And amid all that... âRoom.â
Zoro turns fast. His hand tightens around his sword.
Law.
Heâs standing like he never left. Calm. Collected. Surgeonâs eyes scanning the area.
And then he sees you.
You freeze. You donât say anything, but you smile.
Not the polite kind. Not the cautious one you give strangers.
Itâs soft. Familiar. Full.
Zoro watches your whole face change, lit from within in a way he hasnât seen in years.
And thatâs when it hits him.
You really do look at Law the way you used to look at him.
He turns away before you can see the hurt break through his face.
For the first time since he started trying, Zoro feels something crack.
Heâs not done yet. But for the first time, he wonders if trying is enough.
The alliance happens fast. Faster than anyone expects. But not without meaning.
Luffy grins wide as ever, standing on the snowy remains of the Punk Hazard wreckage, hand outstretched âLetâs do it!â
Law hesitates for half a second, like he always does. Like heâs weighing every possible outcome.
But then his eyes flick past Luffy, just for a moment. To you.
Standing there, watching, quiet.
He takes the hand.
The crew erupts behind you, half celebrating, half groaning.
âAn alliance with him? Really?!â Usopp yells.
âGreat,â Nami mutters âAnother brooding one.â
Sanji lights a cigarette, eyes narrowing at Law âAs long as he keeps his hands off certain people, I guess itâs fine.â
You roll your eyes âSanji!â
Law blinks, then tilts his head âWas that directed at me?â
Sanji blows out smoke âYou did spend two years alone with her, didnât you?â
You choke. Zoro tenses.
And Law... oh God, he blushes.
Itâs the faintest thing. Barely there. Just a brush of pink at his cheekbones.
But everyone sees it.
Robin smiles knowingly. Franky lets out a long âoooooohhh!â Chopper gasps like heâs watching a soap opera.
You cover your face with both hands âOh my god.â
Law clears his throat and looks away âThis is an alliance. Nothing more.â
Sanji grins like a wolf âDidnât say it wasnât anything else.â
Luffy just shrugs âTrafalgarâs cool. He helped when I couldnât.â
That makes everyone pause, because that matters.
Luffy doesnât say things like that often.
He looks at you next, eyes clear and serious for once âHe kept you alive. And that means something to me.â
Your chest tightens.
Law doesnât respond, but his shoulders shift, barely. The way they do when heâs holding something in.
Zoro doesnât say anything either. But he hears everything. He sees everything. And it burns.
Youâre all in the same ship now, as Law temporarily sail with you all.
Itâs chaos. Tension thick in the air. But itâs not the alliance thatâs unstable.
Itâs Zoro and Law.
It starts small.
During a strategy meeting, you lean over Lawâs shoulder to point at the map.
âRight here. If we flank from the eastââ
Zoro cuts in from behind you âThatâs a crap angle. It exposes our backs.â
Law doesnât even look up âNot if we use your crew as decoys.â
Zoroâs eye twitches âYou offering to lead that charge, or just hoping weâll take the hit for you?â
âDonât project your martyr complex on me, Roronoa.â
You sigh, stepping between them before things can escalate âCan we not have a dick-measuring contest over a map?â
Law raises a brow âWho said anything about that?â
Zoro smirks âPretty sure Iâm winning anyway.â
âZoro!â
He glances at you. Shrugs âJust saying.â
Lawâs lips twitch, somewhere between annoyance and something else âVery mature.â
Later that day, youâre sparring on deck, Zoro by your side, running drills. Heâs focused, strict, pushing you hard, harder than usual.
âYouâre dropping your left,â he grunts âAgain.â
âIâm tired...â
âYouâll be dead if you fight like that.â
You glare at him, wiping sweat from your brow âGod, youâre such an ass sometimes.â
âOnly when youâre being lazy.â
âYou wanna fight?â
He smirks âThought we were.â
Before you can respond...
âMaybe she needs a better teacher.â
You both turn.
Law stands a few feet away, arms crossed, tone dry.
Zoro straightens, blade resting on his shoulder âYou volunteering?â
Law shrugs âAt least I know how to critique without barking like a feral animal.â
Zoro steps forward, slow, deliberate âSheâs strong because I push her. Iâve been training with her since before you knew her name.â
Lawâs gaze doesnât waver âAnd yet, she still survived two years without you.â
You can feel the tension crackle in the air, and youâre right in the middle.
âEnough!â you snap, stepping between them âIâm not a prize. You donât get to fight over me like Iâm some damn bounty.â
Neither of them speaks. But they donât look away from each other either.
Zoroâs jaw is tight.
Lawâs hands curl just slightly at his sides.
âGet your shit together. Both of you.â
And then you walk off. Neither of them follows, but both of them want to.
You avoid them both for a while.
Let them stay in their own awkward silences and heavy stares.
Zoro finds you first.
âYouâre pissed.â
You donât look at him âYou think?â
He doesnât back off. He never does.
âI wasnât trying to make you feel like youâre caught in the middle.â
âYou werenât?â you laugh bitterly âBecause it really feels like it, Zoro.â
His voice lowers âIâm trying to tell you I stillââ
âNow you want to say something?â you cut in âAfter years of pretending I didnât exist? After I stopped looking at you like you were my whole world?â
Zoro flinches. Just a little.
You donât stop âYou only noticed me after someone else did. Thatâs not love, Zoro. Thatâs jealousy.â
âItâs not,â he says, sharp now âYou think I didnât feel it back then? I did. I just⌠didnât know what to do with it. I thought we had time.â
You stare at him âWe didnât.â
Silence.
And then âDo you love him?â
The question lands like a weight.
You blink. Breathe. Whisper âI donât know.â
Zoro doesnât move. But everything in him tenses.
You keep going, quieter now âI loved you for so long, Zoro. I wouldâve followed you anywhere.â
Heâs looking at the ground now âI know.â
âAnd you didnât even have to do anything. You just had to see me.â
âI see you now.â
You shake your head âMaybe too late.â
That night, Law comes to you. Quiet as ever.
Youâre sitting at the railing, staring at the sea like it has answers. He stops beside you and sits.
âI shouldnât have fought with him.â
You glance at him âDidnât exactly help.â
He nods, once âI know.â
Thereâs silence for a beat. Then âI didnât want to come back. I thought maybe it would be easier for you if I stayed gone.â
âThatâs not what I wanted.â
He turns his head to look at you âI know. But I also know how you looked at him.â
You laugh softly, bitter âI used to. Not sure I even remember how it felt anymore.â
Law watches you âDo you remember it when you look at me now?â
You swallow âI donât know.â
Itâs the truth. And it hurts.
âI think I wanted to.â
His eyes soften âThatâs not the same thing.â
You nod âI know.â
Two men.
One you loved for years.
One who helped you find yourself again.
And now, you have to choose.
Zoro doesnât approach you after that conversation.
For days, he stays distant. His eyes heavy with everything unsaid, his silence louder than any words could be.
Itâs not easy for him. But somehow, itâs easier for you.
Youâre not holding on anymore. Not to him. Not to the past.
The nights spent on deck, watching the stars with Law, become moments of clarity for you. Heâs the calm in your storm. The one who doesnât try to change you, doesnât try to fix you.
He simply⌠is.
You go sit beside him, your shoulder grazing his. Your heart is full of things you canât put into words, things you donât need to say because he knows.
And for once, youâre not scared of the future.
âIâm sorryâ you murmur, breaking the silence.
He looks at you. His expression unreadable, but thereâs understanding in his eyes âFor what?â
âFor everything,â you say, a little shakier than you expected âFor making this so⌠messy. For making it hurt.â
His lips twitch, just a little. A subtle hint of a smile âIt wasnât just you.â
You look down at your hands, fingers fidgeting âI donât know when it happened. When I stopped thinking about him like that. But I guess⌠I was always looking for something different from that. Someone who wouldâŚâ
âSee you?â Law finishes softly.
You nod âYeah.â
âI see you.â His voice is steady, as it always is.
The words wrap around you like a blanket, and you feel something inside you uncoil, like itâs been waiting for this moment. For someone to just see you. All of you. No conditions. No hesitations.
âIâm sorryâ you repeat, but this time, itâs softer. Not a confession, but a release. A letting go.
He doesnât answer immediately. Instead, he leans closer. Youâre not sure if you should pull away. You donât. You canât.
When his lips meet yours, itâs gentle. You kiss him, and it feels like coming home.
The next morning, Zoro is gone. Not physically, heâs still there. But heâs⌠gone.
He doesnât look at you the way he used to. He doesnât demand your attention. He doesnât hold your gaze for too long, hoping youâll see something in him that you used to.
And you donât feel the ache in your chest anymore.
Itâs the quietest goodbye you couldâve hoped for.
You stand beside Law as the waves crash against the ship, the wind tugging at your hair. It feels like a beginning. A new beginning.
âIâve got your backâ Law says quietly, his voice the same steady promise.
You smile, looking out toward the horizon âI know.â
You pause for a moment, then turn to him with a teasing grin âBut, you knowâŚâ
He raises an eyebrow âWhat?â
âIf weâre going to be all teamwork and allies like thisâŚâ You give him a playful glance, âYou have to stop looking so serious all the time. Itâs like youâre trying to compete with Zoro again but for the âmost broodingâ title this time.â
He actually blinks at you. And then⌠he smirks âIs that so? I didnât realize I had competition.â
âMmhm.â You tilt your head, as if seriously contemplating the challenge âBut Iâll let you have it. For now.â
He chuckles softly âIâll try not to disappoint, then.â
You nudge him with your shoulder, laughter bubbling up between you âYouâre lucky youâre cute when you do it.â
His smirk widens "You have a type."
You gasp at his honesty, and you push him away just for him to push you back in his arms. You laugh and he smiles, you'd pay to stay in this moment forever, because joking, laughing with him, loving him... it feels even better than you could ever imagine.
The days after your conversation with Zoro are tense. He stays distant at first, too, as if unsure how to act after everything. But the quiet between you both doesnât last long.
One evening, you find yourself standing at the edge of the ship, staring at the vast sea, the weight of your heart pulling you down.
Itâs late. The only sound is the gentle rush of the waves.
You can feel him before you hear him.
âY/N.â
You turn and see Zoro stands a few feet away, his silhouette dark against the moonlit sky. His expression is unreadable, but his voice cracks slightly.
âIâve been an idiot.â
You blink, surprised at the words.
He steps forward, hesitating, then adds, âI shouldâve told you. A long time ago. I...â He stops himself, runs a hand through his hair, clearly frustrated âI wasnât ready. And I thought⌠I thought youâd wait for me. But I was wrong.â
You stare at him, heart beating faster with every word.
âI donât know how to say this, but...â He takes a breath, looking you directly in the eyes now âIâve been in love with you since the beginning. Since the first time I saw you, I couldnât stop thinking about you. But I didnât know how to show it. And when you started looking at someone elseâŚâ He clenches his fist âIt killed me. I know I didnât deserve you, but I couldnât just... let you go.â
You swallow hard. He sounds so vulnerable now, in a way youâve never heard before. Itâs the side of him that never showed, always hidden behind his gruff exterior.
âZoroâŚâ you say softly, taking a step toward him.
âI know you might think itâs too late.â He looks down, the weight of his regret pressing him down âBut Iâll keep fighting for you. If youâll give me the chance.â
Your heart flutters, a mixture of relief and a longing you havenât felt in so long. You step forward until youâre right in front of him, your breath mingling in the quiet air.
âI...â you hesitate for a second âI thought I was over you. That I had to let go.â
His hand twitches at his side, wanting to reach out but unsure âI know. And I donât deserve you anymore.â
âBut youâre here now.â
His eyes flicker with hope âIâm here now.â
Without a word, you step closer, closing the small gap between you. And you kiss him.
Itâs slow at first. Tentative, unsure, like the beginning of something new. And for a moment, the entire world disappears. Thereâs no tension, no confusion, just you and him.
When you pull away, heâs staring at you, eyes wide, disbelief and joy mixing in his expression.
âZoro, IâŚâ You can barely catch your breath âI choose you. I choose us.â
He blinks, then grins, a rare, honest smile youâve only seen glimpses of. He pulls you closer, this time with certainty.
âIâm not letting go this time, Y/N. I promise.â
The next morning, you wake up to the sound of Zoro sharpening his swords on the deck. You sit up slowly, stretching your arms, a small smile tugging at your lips.
He notices you and pauses, wiping his sweat from his forehead.
âYouâre up earlyâ he grunts, clearly still adjusting to this softer side of him.
You nod âCouldnât sleep. Had too much on my mind.â
âLike what?â He smirks, teasing now.
You chuckle and roll your eyes âLike how stubborn you are sometimes.â
He raises an eyebrow âMe? Stubborn? You must be confusing me with someone else.â
You walk over to him, standing beside him for a moment before you take a deep breath and add, âIâve always been in love with you, Zoro. But I needed you to see me.â
He grins, his usual cocky demeanor returning âI see you now.â
âYou better!â you reply with a playful smirk, your heart finally light.
And for the first time in a long while, it feels like the beginning of something that could last.
no one laughâŚ.
