“Am I free? There is some thing still holding me. Or am I holding it?”

WHERE right outside of the linden dorms
“ shh, please, be quiet — ” he desperately whispers into his backpack, which was now being carried at the very front of him, with the bag facing wherever he was walking. but it was as if bowie was just talking to a helpless baby animal, the kitten hidden in his backpack only meowed louder back in response. maybe this wasn’t his brightest idea. he stops in his tracks, when he realizes that he was about to walk into someone else. “ shit, sorry — ” and just as he began to apologize, the kitten meowed from the half open bag once again. he looked straight at the person in front of him. “ — don’t mind that, that’s just… my alarm. going off. i like to wake up to meows. ” he says confidently, as though that wasn’t the stupidest strain of words to leave his lips. “ on a very separate, hypothetical note… is it a Big Ogden Crime if i try to sneak a pet into the dorms ? i’m asking for my friend. ” at this point, he’d given up, a grin already making its way onto his lips.
quinn swivelled, ready to apologise in return, when she registered that it was bowie. she was just about to ask how his day was going when a noise escaped his bag. was that... a meow? she peered at the backpack. "alarm, huh?" quinn humoured him. "totally hypothetically — kinda. definitely a health violation. possibly a suspension. that wouldn't be something you were thinking of doing, would it?"

at her response, he holds his hand up to his heart, acting out as though he was pulling a dagger out of his chest, with a grin painted on his lips. he could tell that quinn never trusted him — she was a smart girl, and it didn’t surprise him that she chose not to trust him. but the suspicion grew when greer disappeared, and it got him beginning to wonder if she thought he had anything to do with that.
he reaches out his pack of cigarettes, gesturing for her to take one. “ be my guest. i’m curious to see what trick that is — all of mine are limited to dorm room tricks, i’m afraid. ”
"i doubt that." she added while walking over, taking a cigarette from the pack offered. quinn gestured for link to follow her and began leading them away from the main set of lockers and around the corner to a fully tiled shower area. there were some cubicles adjacent to the wall, for those who craved privacy, and for those who didn't; a typical offering of an open rectangle of densely packed riser rails. she twisted their dials one by one, being careful not to get splashed, and turned back to link with a cheeky smile before sitting in the middle of the short curb that acted as a dam for the run-off. "blow your smoke towards the running water. it dissipates it before it can reach the alarm out there and stops the smell from clinging."

“I mixed it myself,” Parisa confirmed, almost as though she could read Quinn’s mind. She didn’t trust people she didn’t know to make her drinks at an event like this. “It’s… good but maybe a bit too sweet for my tastes, I should’ve probably gone with seltzer instead of Sprite,” she reviewed, savoring the flavor of lemons and pomegranate nonetheless. “Not like pina coladas are an option here,” she muttered, wondering when non-drinkers were going to have their time to thrive at college parties.
Snickering as Quinn talked about her cousin’s power of persuasion, Parisa shook her head. “I’m not ridiculously opposed to going in, but also not intending on it. I spent a little too long doing my hair and makeup to let it get messy, at least this early.” Curly tendrils framed Parisa’s face, with her dark tresses styled in its usual updo. “Plus, I much prefer the ocean to pools. Saltwater is sticky, but still more refreshing than chlorine. Not like we have great beaches up here anyway, but still I’m more of a resort pool girl than a… college competitive pool girl.” Even Parisa’s family’s pool in California was saltwater - not that she swam in it much.
"i don't see the point in any of it," she admitted. quinn had never been one for the water. "but if you do end up in there, please scrub hard after and don't come crying to me if you catch norovirus from the human soup." she finished her drink. parisa was right, it was too sweet. "i have a question for you while i have you here. it's months away, of course, but when the holidays come around i'm sure i'm going to be invited to something formal. i wanted to ask if you'd consider designing a dress for me. paid, of course."

He was already annoyed. That much he was certain, was obvious in the way he’d kept to himself almost the entirety of the night. He didn’t want to be bothered anymore than he wanted to get in this fight tonight. But neither of which seemed to be his choice when he found himself coming face to face with none other than their golden girl herself’s cousin. Quinn Morrison. Someone initially he really liked to believe he would have gotten along with. Intellectually he could appreciate just about anyone who seemed smart enough to keep up with him. But her personality? In comparison it was like nails on a chalk board. If he wasn’t afraid of getting in two arguments that evening he’d have passed her on all together. But he decided against being rude when she stopped in front of him. “Quinn..” He started, not quite willing to make eye contact with her. “Didn’t expect you to want to be at something like this.” He suggested, glancing down to finally meet her gaze. He wasn’t sure how the hell he’d handle a party thrown by a missing relative but it sure as hell seemed like one he’d wish to avoid himself.
quinn was bored and that was bad news for everyone. a middle child, and a spoiled one at that, her reflexive reaction was to start pushing the buttons of whoever she could find as entertainment. even better if there was already bad blood there. she spotted carew in the standing crowd and made a beeline. quinn didn't have a particular dislike for the junior. far from it; she found his mind, and looks, attractive. what she did have was an awareness that she ground his gears for whatever reasons... it wasn't like he made a secret of it. while she theorised he actually secretly enjoyed their back and forth, quinn knew she was mostly in this for herself. she stared up at him until he looked back. "i don't. but what would the masses say if i didn't come?"
