My meditation app told me something the other day that I want to share: "The bright side is a spectrum."
"Look on the bright side" has become a short-hand for "just remember how good you have it compared to others, ignore your pain and move on". It is the motto of toxic positivity, which is a shame because looking on the bright side is still a useful tool. If you acknowledge that the bright side is a spectrum.
Sometimes it can be that everything is going your way and you feel wonderful about yourself. Sometimes it's just that you got out of bed today. Depending on the shade of darkness surrounding those moments, both can be the bright side. Both can hold equal weight against the dark.
So when you look for a bright side and can only find a small candle, you aren't being a pessimist. You've found one end of the spectrum, one that means as much as the beacon.
You must believe that the world is going to change. You must believe that you can change it. Not alone, like some ruggedly individualist caped superhero, but as part of a mass movement, a superorganism, a shared heart, a moment of unity. You must trust that your actions matter, even when they don’t. You must remember that even if going to a protest or opening your doors to the desperate or giving up hyperpconsumption cannot alter the wider societal patterns if only you undertake to do so, that you are just one drop of water in an ocean. And it will change you. That is often the first step. You must believe that one day all the fossils will stay in the ground. You must believe that one day war will be a distant memory. You must believe that one day women will dance in the streets at night unafraid. You must believe that one day land will belong to everyone and queer liberation will be achieved. You must believe it. Even if your great-grandchildren do not live to see it done. Prefiguration is praxis. It’s therapy. It’s all we have.
Do you have any manta ray info you'd like to share? Or any other type of sea critter you're intrigued by? :3
Manta Ray facts!!!
Their wingspan can be up to 30 feet across and they can weigh up to two tons!
Despite their massive size, they can leap nearly 10 feet out of the water (imagine having one of those flying through the air at you)
Every manta has a unique pattern of spots on their underbelly, which has long been used to id individuals as it was considered as unique and unchanging as a fingerprint. However, new evidence suggests that the pattern can shift as the manta ages, meaning we may have been counting the same individuals more than once, overestimating their population.
They have long been hunted for their gill plates, which apparently have medicinal properties, but sadly the species are now threatened due to overharvesting and other human activity.
Mantas are high intelligent, potentially one of the smartest fish in the ocean! They are extremely curious of humans and frequently interact with divers, and can even recognize themselves in a mirror!
I agree, queerness is more than gender and sexual orientation, and I have been saying as well that Our flag means death represents these other parts so well.
Belonging together when we don't belong in most places. Seeing another queer practicing self-expression and getting the courage to try ourselves. The childlike wonder afterwards with some make-up or new outfit we would have not allowed ourselves to enjoy before. The community singing along, even when we are not doing a perfect show.
The kindness. Encouraging each other to face our emotions. The messiness and yet the magic of it all.
When Izzy first walked out I was worried that he would be made into a joke that the crew would laugh at
but then he started singing and the dancing began and I realized that he wasn’t meant to be a joke at all. This is the most open and happy we’ve ever seen Izzy and the show treated it that way. Not mocking him but instead celebrating this moment.
When we talk about queer representation it’s usually just focused on queer relationships, but what I love about this episode is it shows other sides of being queer. That moment where Izzy saw Wee John doing his makeup and had a realization that he wanted that too? That is what being queer means to me. The crew singing along and cheering for him? That is what being apart of the queer community means to me.
What i love about this show is that it shows queer joy, not in a sanitized way, but in away that is messy, beautiful, and without any mockery or shame.
Guys, gals, genderless beings of divine origin, share your fuckin joys. You’re gonna feel weird about it because of The Horrors but it’s important I’m actually so fucking serious right now. Wear your joy like armor against the onslaught of bullshit. Don’t let them take that from you, they don’t deserve it. They need you sapped of joy and the joie de vivre that’s makes you so fucking incredible and loveable and amazing. They need you utterly hopeless. A hopeless and joyless soul is a compliant soul. Your joy is an act of rebellion. Read your fuckin books, listen to your fuckin music, watch your fuckin shows, play your fuckin games, write your fuckin stores, learn a new synth, figure out how to skip rocks, get a used camera, learn something new….AND FUCKING TELL ME ABOUT IT. I AM COMPLETELY SERIOUS. I WANT TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR JOY. I WANT TO SEE THE IMAGE THAT BRINGS YOU HOPE. I WANT TO HEAR THE SONG THAT GIVES YOU LIFE. PUT IT IN MY ASKS. REBLOG THIS WITH IT. The Horrors exist but your joy is a counter attack.

if he was still alive I know in my heart that Terry Pratchett would have done a bit about Igors and Igorinas doing gender confirmation surgery by now. going into a lab full of bubbling vials and picking out a penis from a tank the way you pick a lobster. that one, please. you gotta be careful though because they'll really try to upsell you into getting two or three installed. people going to the clinic as pairs and just having parts swapped out for a discounted rate. maybe you actually just trade brains, that's even easier. Igorth have already been doing that thurgery for thenturieth.
I think if there was a god it would look like a whale.
“Before the writers started working on the first season, I wrote a list of six things on the wall that every episode had to do.” - Mike Schur (x)
This episode broke my heart. Seeing how they could have had it so fucking nice was more painful than all the pain in the rest of the show. Seeing who Powder could have been. Fuck.
The song playing in the background when Ekko and Powder dance is called... 'Ma Meilleure Ennemie'
Which translates to...
Despite the circumstances Ekko has always loved Jinx :')
