NASA National Community College Aerospace Scholars Fellow interns did an amazing job mentoring NASA's National Community College Aerospace Scholars (NCAS). They held a panel sharing their NASA stories as NCAS alumni sharing wisdom about treating rejection like an opportunity, achieving excellence over perfection, fundraising no matter what, and following your passion. Do an Hour of Code with Disney’s Moana!

Today Code.org and Disney revealed a new Hour of Code tutorial featuring characters from the upcoming Disney animated film Moana. We are thrilled to be able to offer this activity to teachers across the globe as they prepare to do an Hour of Code with their classrooms between December 5-11 to celebrate Computer Science Education Week—and no experience with code is required to teach it.

We’ve partnered with Disney and Lucasfilm in the past on Hour of Code activities featuring Frozen and Star Wars™ characters—some of our most popular ever. We were particularly excited that both of these beloved tutorials featured strong female characters, which helped the Hour of Code introduce female students around the world to computer science.

The Hour of Code has now reached over 50 million girls, a milestone in female participation for computer science. We look forward to continuing that momentum with “Moana: Wayfinding with Code,” which features a strong female character and a male companion.

We also recently announced that we’re teaming up with Walt Disney Animation Studios and Lucasfilm to create Frozen and Star Wars-themed puzzles for our Computer Science Fundamentals curriculum on Code Studio. The puzzles will be developed and integrated into our curriculum over the next year.

We’ve found that kids are much more likely to try computer science if it contains topics they are interested in, like their favorite Disney stories and characters. Our work with Disney over the past two years has helped Hour of Code reach record numbers, inspiring millions of children of all ages to try coding and pursue an education in computer science.

The story of the “Moana: Wayfinding with Code” tutorial centers around Moana and Maui as they sail through unknown territory across the ocean. As students follow Moana and Maui’s travels, they learn basic coding commands that help steer the boat. Along the way, students are introduced to conditionals, sequences and loops while they master the art of navigation. When Moana and Maui are suddenly attacked by the Kakamora – coconut-clad warriors—they must use their coding skills to dodge their pirate projectiles and penetrate their defenses.

The “Moana: Wayfinding with Code” tutorial is available in more than 180 countries and 23 languages, including Samoan Polynesian. Educators can also find Hour of Code toolkits in English and Spanish on the tutorial’s website!

Thank you to Disney for helping us give children all over the world the opportunity to learn the basics of coding.

43 Acres of Aerospace: NASA Co-Op #2 Week Five & Six

If you think NASA is dead then you have probably never personally visited a NASA Center. 27 Johnson Space students had the awesome opportunity to tour the Michoud (Meh-shood) Assembly Facility. Here the Space Launch System (SLS), largest rocket in the world with 20% more thrust than Saturn V, is being built. SLS will send an unmanned Orion Space Craft around the Moon in Fall of 2018. In the history of spaceflight unmanned missions are common to ensure astronauts will be safe. The 43 acre indoor assembly facility is so large you have to ride a tram indoors for a tour. We saw liquid nitrogen tanks, liquid oxygen tanks, rings, domes and all the tools to safely weld/ fasten these parts together. Employees could be seen in hard hats and florescent yellow vests monitoring the tank's construction and creation of parts.

North of Michoud is Stennis Space Center, masters of engine tests and keeper of partners across the US Government. Buildings dedicated to work done by the Navy, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Universities and US Geological Survey for maximum collaboration. Stennis is unique because it is surrounded by a 125,000 acre acoustical buffer zone comprised of local trees. Despite buffer efforts past tests have been known to shatter windows! We were scheduled to see an engine test at test stand A above but we unfortunately missed due to engine technical difficulties. Aerospace engineering is hard guys, I'm glad they are doing what they got to do to ensure a successful mission.

I encourage you to visit a NASA center and take a tour of the facilities offered by the respective center's visitor centers. See for your self the progress toward our journey to mars. Johnson Space offers a tram tour to Mission Control, Mock Up Facility and the Shuttle Systems Test Facility. I am sure other centers offer similar opportunities. Day in the life of an engineering major: Notes so long you have to take a picture of the white board. Senior who has this life thing figured out 3D printing a robotic arm built with video game controller parts. TA makes fun of us for being lazy and taking pictures of the chalk board - revolt by taking selfies with the chalk board. Full wave bridge rectifier decided to cooperate with the breadboard today producing a clean image on the oscilloscope. Instead of causing stack overflows stability of a system can be diagnosed when looking at a block diagram. Professor judges the mess of clamps connected to super ground. Realizing you actually need to be employed after college, cleaning up and attending a job fair. Realizing everyone is having a post college employment crisis, talking to as many recruiters as possible while snagging free company swag.

100 Million X-Rays: NASA Co-Op #2 Week Three & Four

Jupiter orbital insertion, FIRST robotics coach visit and humidity sensor test prep have filled these past two weeks.

Drafting a fluid schematic complete with themocouples and pressure gauges I learn some fluid dynamics not expected to acquire as an electrical engineering and computer science major. The humidity sensor will be tested three ways - for 0% humidity with evaporating liquid nitrogen (Yah!), for ~ 50% with ambient room humidity down here in Houston, and >50% with ambient air being pulled through a water filled bubbler. Sensors will systemically be scattered to collect data and determine with a hefty amount of PV=NRTing if the humidity sensor works. After learning PV=NRT can only be used when you are certain the amount of water and vapor are equal to derive humidity we came up with the simple three part test matrix explained above.

My high school FIRST Robotics coach came to Johnson Space to tour some spacefaring robots, propulsion test center and space station mock ups (exact replicas of what is in space) at the Space Vehicle Mockup Facility! We also visited Houston’s Natural Science Museum and biked on Galveston.

Within a second of what was expected the Juno Spacecraft performed her tasks successfully and inserted into Jupiter’s orbit. This basketball court sized spacecraft will be exposed radiation equivalent to a human receiving 100 million X-Rays in a year. Juno also captured the first demonstration of celestial harmonic movement hypothesized by physics. Powered by solar energy this Juno is unique because most crafts that travel this far are radioisotope thermoelectrically powered. A critical part of this insertion was turning the solar arrays back toward the Sun post insertion.

One Robot Six Weeks

Fueled by pizza and Mountain Dew over 78,000 high school students will be participating in FIRST Robotics teams to build a 120lb competitive robot in just six weeks. This Saturday January 9th 9amCT FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition for Science and Technology) will reveal a new game the robots will compete in. You can watch this season's Kick Off live stream HERE.

Basketball, soccer and frisbee playing robots have been built in the past. A video showcasing a new theme "FIRST Stronghold" gives hints to a Mideavel inspired games. Watch FIRST Stronghold here. Hidden in the video is a layout of a competition field convincingly drawn with symmetrical sides. Bloggers from Chief Delphi, a popular robotics discussion board, took screenshots of the blueprint and even corrected its perspective. Chief Delphi members are convinced the video allures to a capture the flag, jousting or player VS field game. Echoes of Nickelodeon Guts and Legends of the Hidden Temple 90s game shows resonate with me as I imagine robotics quickly scaling Aggro Crag and manipulating artifacts. Sprinkled the throughout the forum are hopes for water game with submerged obstacles - a long running hope and joke of robotics students. Friday January 8th 6pmCT a broadcast from a FIRST Founders evening (WATCH HERE) will be diving into the details of the FIRST Stronghold theme.

Game challenge aside I am concerned about how high school students and the general audience will view the Stronghold theme. Stronghold may create a stigma with its LARPing (Live Action Roll Play) undertones alienating students from STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) rather than inviting them in. As the 2016 FIRST Robotics season plays out we will see how Stronghold is welcomed.

With or without fancy capes and flags what these high school students are accomplishing is exrtraodinary. Designing, building, wiring, marketing, and programming these robots take industry level skills that would knock any future employer's socks off. NASA Meets Super Bowl LI

Super Bowl has taken over Houston and NASA! VIPs have been touring all week with cameras flashing and film rolling. Despite the excitement work at Johnson continues uninterrupted. During work hours we are the entertainment viewed by the VIPs as we test, train and support space missions. In fact, today I conducted user testing in the Space Vehicle Mock Up Facility, a facility that feels like a fish bowl as tour goers check out Space Station and Orion training mock-ups. Heads down and clip boards out we user tested a device for on board International Space Station. However, last week NASA put together an opportunity to meet retired NFL players during lunch to get our Super Bowl fill before the big week. 

NASA has a huge presence at Super Bowl events and is expected to be featured during on the big screen during pre-game shows and game. There has been film crews running around Johnson and other related centers, I will be watching for some NASA love on TV Sunday! Alternatively 9th to 12th grade can participate in FIRST Robotics Competition building 120lb robots that play games like soccer, basketball and frisbee.
