diana spent years advocating for the health and care of queer people with hiv/aids. in 1987, at the height of the epidemic, she opened the first specialist clinic dedicated to treating aids patients (the first clinic of it’s kind in the uk).

she also fought public hysteria by hugging and shaking bare hands with aids patients, at a time when aids was thought to be spread by skin to skin contact. not only that, she visited patients in the clinic regularly and even comforted them through their sickness.

and when queen elizabeth told her to try focusing on “something more pleasant”?

diana ignored her and kept fighting.

and this is only her work towards the aids crisis. she publicly called out the royal family, brought attention to numerous world issues, and was known as an advocate for empathy and kindness. she’s known and loved as the people’s princess for good reason

when i was 6, i started experiencing back pain. said it hurt, kept suggesting a doctor.

no one listened.

by the age of 13, i should have been tested for scoliosis.

the school fucked up, and i wasnt.

at the age of 14, i went to the doctor for a bad back.

she looked at me, looked at how criminally large my breasts where, how fat i had become due to inability to exercise properly.

looked at my back. said i might get scoliosis if this kept up. do these exercises, youll be fine.

sent me home.

at the age of 15, i walked around New Orleans for a week in flats. gave myself tendonitis and plantar faasciatis.

no referrerals to a proper PT specialist. no rx drugs that might help. just...

by the age of 16, i was having stomach pain every day from acid caused by my OTC drug use.

the stuff i used to mitigate the pain.

the doctor gave me what was essentially topical Ibuprofen. told me i couldn't injest painkillers anymore.

i was 20 by the time i saw a doctor and got my diagnoses. i was 20 before i knew i had fibro and scoliosis. i was 20 before i knew that drugs that weren't narcotics or OTCs that messed with my stomach existed, that i should use a cane, that i might need a wheelchair some days.

kids don't say "I'm in pain" over and over and over for attention. they don't fake being hurt in a chronic way.

i feel like everything i went through was preventable. i feel like i might be abled had i had proper care and treatment.

There is an absolutely infuriating trend of city queers assuming that no queer person could possibly want to stay and live and establish a home in a rural community, and none of us could possibly have a vested interest in staying and improving the communities we already live in. They act like all of us dream of moving to Portland or Seattle or the Bay Area or some other gentrified-to-fuck, capitalist-nightmare-with-a-shitty-rainbow-facade city, and to hell with our icky redneck homes.

I'm tired of the kind of people who come on tumblr to reblog endless stuff about how much they want to live a cottagecore life, while also being aggressively classist toward poor, rural, working-class queer folks who genuinely love their homes and communities and are making the best of dangerous situations.
