just wanted to let you know that you're my favorite logan author<33
omg stawwwwwppp you guys are making me blush <333
Hii ! I was hoping you could do Logan x Reader where all the teachers go to a club, and the Reader starts dancing with Storm and Jean while Logan is sitting on a couch, looking at her. They both have a crush on each other, but they don't know it, so when the Reader notices Logan staring at her, she gets shy and decides to go get a drink. When she got her drink, a guy starts flirting with her, and Logan obviously sees it. he gets jealous and walks up to the guy telling him to leave her alone. After they talk for a bit, the Reader accidentally confesses and Logan kisses her. this ends up in a private room with Logan fucking her as he always wanted. I know this is a long request and I'm sorry for that, bue I'm a writer myself, so I already had develop this bit of the story in my head. I completely understand if you don't want to do it. Hope you have an awesome day !!đ¤â¤ď¸ Love your writing btw
a/n: I loved this prompt so much, did switch it up a bit bc I faced a bit of writer's block trying to flesh this out!! (and if I said I was listening to Thong Song while writing this, what then?)
18+ MDNI (fucking in a club bathroom, if that's not your thing, move on out)
Logan rummages around somewhere behind you, digging through the cabinets and moving everything around. The longer he searches, the more confused you grow. Your brows furrow as he cusses to himself.
Thereâs a low grunt of frustration as Logan rounds the kitchen island to glare at you. His face is screwed up in anger that seems to be misdirected towards you. You give him an awkward look, âUh, hi?â
âHe stole my booze,â he responds shortly and without explanation. You shake your head in confusion as the dots slowly connect. A small smile curls up on your lips but the glare he gives you makes it quickly drop.Â
âWell, you know Charles' rules about it,â you tell him flippantly. Logan huffs and shoves away from the counter. He turns back to the fridge, destroying the organizational system as he continues his search. You roll your eyes, eating your food and watching him with a bored expression.Â
Jean walks just as he really begins to work himself up. Her face pinches in distaste, catching on to the root of his anger quicker than you had. She looks at you with a small smirk. âCharles?â
âYep," You answer, eyes still trained on him. He finally gives up the futile search, moving to stand beside you. Your eyes widen and you try not to physically react to his proximity. Itâs an everyday struggle to remain calm around him. Youâre desperately trying to keep a cool girl persona but you donât think it's working.Â
Youâre pretty sure he sees right through your pathetic attempts at nonchalance every time you two are paired on a mission. Jean notices the look on your face and smiles slightly. âThe rest of us are thinking of going out tonight.â
It's not an offer with her, more of a demand for the two least sociable members of the team. She gives you both expectant looks, ignoring the way you minutely shake your head in disapproval at the idea of going out.
âPass,â Logan grunts. He steps away from you, making for the kitchen door. Jean quickly steps in front of him, firmly placing her hand on his chest and giving him a stern look.
You feel like you're missing something as they silently converse with tense looks and aggressive eye motions towards you. You might be worried they're flirting if it weren't for how fed up they both look right now with one another.
Your brows furrow in confusion and it only worsens when Logan lets out an aggrieved huff. âFine. Iâll come.â He gives Jean a thin smile, âHappy?âÂ
She releases him and moves out of the way with a smug look. âVery. Youâll thank me, by the way.â She says to his retreating back, ignoring whatever he mutters back to her.
Youâre completely lost about what that was but don't have much time to process it before Jean turns her attention to you. You already know what she wants and you immediately shake your head. âNo, nope, you know I donât like going out.â Jean smiles at you, but you know sheâs just pretending to agree with you.Â
âJean,â your voice is sharp as you glare at her. âNot happening.â
You really regret ever befriending her. Sheâs either ridiculously persuasive or she's used her mind-warping abilities on you.
You're squished between Ororo and Logan on a sticky club booth. The smell of booze and cheap perfume soaks through your senses. You feel the beginnings of a headache forming as the music pounds.
While you love the feeling of Logan's biceps pushed up against you, you hate the club more. Storm catches the tense look on your face and sighs in disappointment.
"We need to get some more alcohol in you," she tells you with a faux sense of authority. "Come on," she nods her head and for a moment you think she's talking to you. But, with a move that seems practiced, Scott and Jean both follow her out of the booth and head toward the bar.
You watch them go with a suspicious glint in your eye, not trusting how smoothly they all just conveniently slipped away. That leaves just you and Logan behind at the table and you doubt that's coincidental.
They've been a little pushy about this crush of yours ever since they found out. They insist that he feels the same way about you as you do him. But you sincerely doubt he's fantasizing about going on romantic picnics with you and thinking of mushy dates.
He seems like the kind of guy to value silence over a girlfriend and you doubt you're his type. You don't tend to stray from the rules, ever. You don't think there's much you two have in common, as much as the others insist the opposite.
You give him a subtle look over. He hasn't moved away from you, which seems like a good sign. There's plenty of space for him to go now, but he keeps himself pressed up against you.
But, he's also not looking at you. His thumb is idly tracing the rim of his glass and he's refusing to take his eyes off the stained wood of the table. You know he can feel the way you're staring at him, but he's stubbornly refusing to acknowledge your presence. It almost feels petty and that makes you scoff and roll your eyes at the thought. You doubt Logan cares enough to be petty.
Practically in love with me, you think sarcastically.Â
You know your friends are taking longer than necessary at the bar, trying to give the two of you some privacy. You feel like a high school girl, trying to get the cool guy to like her when he literally couldnât give two shits.Â
Your friends being pushy about the two of you really isn't helping anything. It only gives you false hope, and when he's inevitably a jerk again, it just makes all your little fantasies come crashing down.
You pick up your glass, tipping your head back and letting the alcohol warm you from the inside out. You've done your hair, spent forever doing your makeup, and you put on your favorite slutty dress. You don't feel like sitting here all night sulking alongside your unrequited crush.
More often than not, Logan is nothing more than a wet blanket. You've put in the effort and dragged yourself outside for once, you'd like to enjoy the experience. He could come find you when he felt like pulling the stick out of his ass. You slide out of the booth with a huff, uncaring as the hem of your dress rolls up your thighs.Â
âWhereâre you going?â Logan demands, voice gruff. Now he wants to pay attention, figures.Â
You turn around and glare down at him. His eyes rove slowly over you, the way they should have been all night. His gaze is a physical caress and his stare lingers along your body. You can practically feel his touch on the curves of your hips. Slowly, he looks back up to meet your eye, something like a challenge on his face.Â
You assess him, raising a brow and shrugging. âIâm gonna dance.â Something has possessed you or thereâs a very talented telepath manipulating you right now. In a rare display of confidence you lean over the table, breasts pushed out towards him. âWanna join me?â You ask, breath barely above a whisper.Â
He scoffs and goes back to glaring at the table. Whatever confidence you had settles coldly in the bottom of your gut. âNot my thing, kid,â he gripes, every bit the crotchety old man.Â
You roll your eyes, playing off the sting of rejection as an annoyance. âOf course, youâre not. Youâre not having fun unless everyone else is miserable,â you snap. His eyes shoot up to meet yours, something like shock playing on his face.Â
You donât let him respond, already turning on your heel and walking off. As much as you like Logan, sometimes this attitude of his becomes tiring. Whatâs wrong with wanting to have fun for a night?
Youâre not usually a huge fan of clubs. But when youâre out with your friends, youâre not going to actively ruin their night. As rude as that was, itâs right. Heâs the âcoolâ kid in high school who thought everything was lame and never wanted to enjoy anything.Â
So, what? You like to get a little drunk and sloppy sometimes, maybe if he ever tried it he might be less miserable. You head towards the bar, spotting Ororoâs hair easily through the crowd. You slide behind her, slipping your arm over her shoulder, âHey pretty,â you whisper in her ear, laughing as she jumps.Â
She turns and glares at you, swatting at your shoulder. âYouâre lucky I didnât hurt you.â
âOoh, save it for later.â She rolls her eyes and passes you a shot. You take it with a smile, wincing at the burn of the tequila. âYou wanna dance?â You have to shout to be heard over the music but you know she hears you when her eyes widen in surprise.Â
She glances behind you and you donât have to look to know Logan is glaring daggers at your back. You can feel him and it's pissing you off. âWhat happened?â You know she can tell something is up, youâre never this outgoing when you go out. But you donât want to talk about finally coming to terms with the fact that you and Logan arenât going to work out.Â
Instead, you hold your hand out and wink. âWanna dance or not?â She laughs a little, slipping her palm into yours and letting you drag her out onto the dance floor. Itâs been a while since youâve actually been sober dancing. You usually like to be near blackout drunk, but you just donât have the energy for that tonight.Â
Ororo is a little tipsier than you, clearly having been drinking while she was waiting at the bar. Her inhibitions are looser and sheâs giggling as you move your hips against hers. Neither of you is dancing to impress, youâre messily moving around each other to the beat of the music. You donât pay attention to the people around you, just having fun by yourselves.Â
Ororo takes your hand, spinning you a little and pulling you back into her arms. You laugh, swaying your hips to the same rhythm she is, chests pressed tightly together while you smile at each other.Â
She only lasts a few songs before she pulls back. âI need a drink,â she yells before stumbling back towards the bar. You feel yourself deflate, not sure what to do with yourself now that your favorite dancing partner has ditched you.Â
You look through the mass of grinding bodies and try and spot your table. You canât see much through the brightly colored lights spinning all around you. Everythingâs a little disorienting and the shots youâve had arenât helping.Â
Someoneâs hand slips around your waist, âYour friend left you all alone?â Normally, youâd push whoever it was off and tell them to back off. But heâs got an attractive voice and you can feel how fit he is against your back.Â
âYou gonna keep me company?â You tease, voice a low purr as you push back against him. Your hands drift down to his arms, pulling them a little tighter around your waist. He chuckles, the noise reverberating through your back.Â
You barely even get a chance to dance before your back is cold and you can feel his arms forcibly ripped off you. It doesnât take much digging to find the culprit. Logan is behind you, hand fisted in the guyâs collar, âWhy donât you back off, bub?â He shoves him back and you roll your eyes as the guy scrambles off.Â
âWhat the hell was that?â You demand arms crossed as you glare at Logan.Â
He turns around and youâre surprised at the intensity of his glare. Something about it has you heated for an entirely different reason. Heâs staring down at you like heâs gonna pounce on you. Your heart races, thighs clenching the longer heâs glowering at you.Â
He shouldnât be allowed to be so attractive when heâs pissed off. He reaches forward, grabbing your bicep and jerking you into his chest. He leans down until his lips are brushing against your ear. âYou wanna dance, letâs dance, kid.â
âWhat-â
He cuts you off, flipping you around and pulling your back flush against him. You can feel just how much your little show with Storm got him going. You truly werenât doing anything too alluring, but it seems to be enough for him.Â
When you donât move his hands drop to your hips and he grinds them down against him. âLogan,â you gasp his name out, caught off guard by how brazen heâs being in the middle of the club. There are people around you doing much worse but youâve never known him to be this bold before.Â
âYou trying to make me jealous?â Itâs hard to pay attention to what heâs saying, to focus on anything at all when his hand is drifting steadily down your body. The tips of his fingers just barely brush the skin of your thigh while his thumb lets the hem of your dress curl up.Â
He flips you around, taking his hands off of you and instead tilting your chin up to face him. âI said,â he repeats in a condescending tone, âwere you trying to make me jealous?â He doesnât sound like heâs taking you seriously. Even if that was your intention, he thinks itâs just your petty way of lashing out at him for not dancing.Â
You narrow your eyes at him and swat his hands off of you. âNo. I wasnât trying to make you jealous. I was trying to have some fun since youâre clearly not interested at all.â
That insufferable smirk of his doesnât go away for a minute. If anything, heâs more incensed by your anger. âWho said I wasnât interested?â Your lips part, another dumb little noise about to slip out when he dips down and stops you.Â
Heâs not trying to be subtle at all, gripping your dress and tugging you up against him while your lips lock. His tongue dips briefly into your mouth, savoring the taste of tequila on your gums before he pulls back.Â
âIâm interested in you, kid, just not this shitty little club.â Your mouth is gaping and you feel like a fool, standing there and just staring at him. Your brain is completely scrambled, bits and pieces forming together to scream that he kissed you. Too many things are happening at once. The music is making the floor beneath you vibrate, liquor is warming you from the inside out and tilting you closer to him. And he kissed you. Your lips are still tingling from it.Â
He chuckles a little under his breath, keeping you moving steadily against him. Youâre simply something to be puppeteered by your desire for him. No thoughts linger inside your brain except his name. âYouâre interested in me?â You repeat dumbly.
He leans down, tilting his lips closer towards your ear. âYou canât feel how much I want you?â One of your thighs is practically draped over his leg and heâs grinding his hips against you. The only thing you can feel is him. The smell of his cologne overpowers all the bodies surrounding you both, his voice drones out the loud music around you. Youâre completely consumed by him.Â
âLogan,â your tone is scandalized, you canât believe heâs bold enough to have you nearly half-naked on his lap right now. Your butt is one wrong move away from being the clubâs newest attraction. Yet, despite every protest lingering on your tongue, you canât do anything except kiss him again.Â
You donât know if the moment is all one vivid wet dream your brain has conjured up at three am and you donât feel like finding out. You want to enjoy being risky for once. You always play everything so safely. You donât confess your feelings to Logan so you arenât rejected. You never break the rules, you never act out. Just once, you want to do something bad and enjoy it.Â
Your arms twine around his neck and you tilt your head to deepen the kiss further. You feel his reaction more than you hear it. A low grumble in his chest that has you practically vibrating with want. He pulls away from you first and it takes a moment for your eyes to flutter back open.Â
When you finally do meet his gaze again, heâs got nothing but a smoldering desire in his eyes that makes you want to melt. Heâs staring you down like youâre prey to be chased and consumed. âCanât do this here,â he mutters.Â
Youâre almost shocked that heâs the first one to cut this off. You knew it was going to happen, you canât exactly fuck in the middle of the dance floor. As much as you might want to. But you thought you would be the one to chicken out.Â
He grabs your hand and shoves through the throng of grinding bodies. You grab the back of his shirt, stumbling after him and trying to stay close. âAs much as Iâd like to make that poor son of a bitch watch me fuck you, we need a little more privacy.â
It takes you a moment to realize heâs talking about the man youâd danced with earlier. If you could even qualify that as dancing. Heâd barely put his hand on your waist before Logan had appeared out of nowhere.
Your eyes narrow in suspicion and you glare at his back. How had he even gotten to you so quickly? He must have been watching you like a creep the whole time. You almost want to laugh at the thought. But youâre distracted by him nudging you through a door and locking it behind you.Â
You glance around, spotting three sinks and some cracked mirrors. Toilet stalls linger to your right and your nose wrinkles in disgust. You turn around to complain but heâs already stalking toward you. Whatever sanitary complaints were lingering in the back of your throat are thrown out the sealed bathroom window.Â
He buries his hands in your hair, ruining the meticulously placed style. You arch into his hold, opening your mouth for him to explore and gasping as his hand drops to your hips. He tugs you closer, ripping your dress up and yanking your underwear down in one smooth move.Â
You barely have a second to process half of whatâs happening before heâs got you bent over the sink. Itâs all happening so fast, so many different desires of yours surging to the surface in one dingy club bathroom.Â
Youâre slick with months of fantasies and sleepless nights where not even your vibrator could curb your desire for him. You hear his belt clink behind you and your back arches like a cat in heat. You practically present yourself to him, so desperate to feel him that you donât care how much of a slut youâre being.Â
You know, if this was anyone else, youâd slap them for even suggesting the bathroom as the first place you have sex. But youâd have let Logan take you in the alley behind the club. You donât care where you are, just so long as it's with him. And you know that desire runs a bit deeper than just a surface-level crush.Â
He doesnât give you much warning as he thrusts into you. The breath is practically punched out of you as he fills you. Everything about it feels right. Youâre so full of him you feel like you could explode. You know itâs going to take a pathetically short time for you to come. Itâs just too much, too fast, youâre so overwhelmed by him.Â
âOh god, Logan,â the porcelain creaks under your palms before you feel it splintering off into your skin. You canât pay attention to it, though, jaw agape, capable of nothing more than slutty moans of his name.Â
Heâs relentless behind you, thrusting so hard inside you that it feels like a punishment. He fists his hand in your hair and forces you to look in the mirror. âCome on, want you to see how wrecked you are. What a fucking slut youâre being for me, letting me fuck you like this in this bar.â
Your mascara is completely ruined, streaked down your face with your lipstick smeared across your chin. You look like a fucking mess and you couldnât care less. You feel yourself fluttering around him the tighter his grip on you is. His hand slips from your hair, latching around your neck and tugging you into his chest.Â
He grips your chin and keeps your eyes on where the two of you are joined in the mirror. It only makes you clench tighter around him, watching as he moves in and out of you. You can see just how much of an effect you're having on him and itâs the biggest ego boost youâve ever had in your life.Â
Youâve reduced him to a mess in a dirty club bathroom, so desperate for you he couldnât even wait to take you home. He tilts his hips, hitting the spot inside you that has your eyes nearly rolling in the back of your head.
You whisper his name in warning, letting go of the sink to clutch tightly at his wrist. He wraps his arm around your waist, keeping you secured against him. His hips start to stutter, losing some of their rhythm the tighter you are around him. The feeling builds in your fingers, tingles down to the tips of your toes, and explodes in a nearly blinding pleasure. His hips are still against you, warmth filling you a moment later.Â
You would slump forward into the sink if it werenât for his protective hold around your stomach. He keeps you tight against his chest for a minute, waiting for you to catch your bearings again. It takes an embarrassingly long time for the feeling in your legs to come back. Youâve never had such an intense experience like that.Â
You donât know if it's from the thrill of possibly getting caught or just because you were with him. Youâve longed and lusted after Logan for so long, and finally having the real thing is a bit of shock. Especially when he exceeded your fantasies, you didnât even know that was possible.
He props you against the sink, tugging your dress down and pulling your underwear back up. You watch him with dulled interest, still reeling from what youâve just done. Youâve never been so bold before, it almost feels liberating to just say âfuck itâ and do what you want.Â
He pulls his own pants back up, fixing his belt and grabbing a wet paper towel for you. Heâs silent as he wipes the mascara of your cheeks and you give him a questioning look. âYou want the others to know what happened?â
You scoff and glance away from him, looking towards the door of the bathroom. âIâm sure they already know. Werenât exactly subtle,â you tell him with a small smile.Â
He smirks, tossing the towel away and walking back towards you. He keeps his arms on either side of you, bracketing you against the sink and grinning down at you. âNo, we werenât, were we?â
You shake your head silently, lips curled up in amusement. Your eyes briefly dart to his lips before meeting his eyes once more. He catches the look with a sly smile, dipping his head down and giving you a brief kiss.Â
Itâs short and sweet, more loving than the passionate, rip-my-clothes-off kisses from before. It feels like the type of kiss a married couple would share in the early morning when they only want to remind the other they love each other. Your proximity and the look heâs giving you feel more intimate than anything that just happened.Â
âYou really meant it?â You muse, voice barely above a whisper as you smile at him.Â
âMeant what?â He mutters.Â
âYou like me,â you tease, entangling your hand with his and tugging him even closer to you.Â
He gives you a confused look, glancing at the sink behind you and then back at your disheveled form. âDid I not make that clear enough, kid?â
You shake your head, âNo, I think I might need another reminder,â you tell him. It takes a moment for your words to click for him. You can see when it does, he gives you a small smile and shakes his head with an aggrieved sigh like youâre bugging him.Â
âReally making me work for it, huh?â You nod your head playfully, dragging him down towards you and bringing him into another kiss. You can deal with the line forming outside in a minute. You can push off your nosy friendsâ questions for another day. Right now, itâs just you and him, finally doing what youâve wanted since the moment you saw him.Â

Alone and Forsaken
one-shot
Joel Miller x fem!reader
A/N: I got COVID and haven't had a coherent thought in five days, so if this doesn't make sense it's not my fault, it's the virus. (Thank you @benkeibear for the dividers)
Summary: You're aren't anything to Joel Miller. You're a comfort, habit, and necessity. But you've never been anything more. It gets to you and you do what you always do, you run. When you make the permanent move to Jackson you've got no choice but to face the truth of what you are to each other.

Part two here
You glanced down at Ellie, sweat was beading on her forehead and she was shivering in her sleeping bag. You glanced towards Joel, he was staring down at his gun, heâd been cleaning it for the past ten minutes.Â
âWeâre right near Jack-â
âNo,â his voice was rough, a command rather than an interruption. You sighed and went back to crafting some arrows for Ellie. âWeâll find some medicine tomorrow.â
You gave a noncommittal hum, you could hear him sigh from across the fire. Youâd managed to clean out an old office today, you were camping out on the roof. Joel had determined the fog provided enough cover to not have to worry about others seeing the smoke.Â
He placed his gun down and leaned his elbows on his knees, you could feel his stare boring into you but you refused to give in. He wasnât the only one who could be a stubborn bastard. âY/N-â
âYouâre acting like an old fool.â
He scoffed, âIâm not that old.â
âJoel,â you finally glanced up. âEllie needs medicine, weâre right near your brotherâs we might as well see if heâs got anything.â He stared at you for a long moment, not saying anything, until his shoulders slumped and he shrugged. He went back to cleaning his gun and you could tell he had conceded.Â
Youâd made it to Jackson a year ago after the Firefly incident at the hospital. But it had been too much for all three of you. Years of killing, fighting to keep yourself alive, all on your own, it was too jarring to be in such a quaint little place.Â
You couldnât wake up every morning to a âHowdy, neighbor!â like nothing had changed. There were too many people and it was too forceful a transition from fighting for every last resource to suddenly having everything willingly handed to you.Â
Eventually, when it became too tiring to keep fighting, you were sure you would move back to Jackson. For now, each of you enjoyed the freedom of not having to fight for anyone but yourselves. It was an occasional pit stop for supplies and a dose of normalcy.Â
Youâd been on the road for about six months now, it was time to cycle back onto the path towards Tommy.Â
Good timing too, about two days ago Ellie had a sore throat and now sheâs pretty much deadweight behind you both. âWeâll head out at dawn.â Joel stood up, nothing more to say, and took first watch. You tucked your arrows away and laid down, hoping to get some sleep before you were on the move again.Â
âHow much further?â
âAnother few miles,â Joel glanced over his shoulder at you. âHowâs she doing?â
âIâm doing fine,â Ellie interrupted. But it was hard to believe her when her voice was a barely audible croak and she was leaning against you for support.Â
Joel sighed and glanced towards his right, there was a creek and a sunny patch of grass. He started towards it, dropping his pack on a rock and coming to a stop. âWeâll stop here for a break.â
âI said Iâm fin-âÂ
She interrupted herself with a cough that was so jarring you winced. It sounded like her throat was being ripped apart. When she finally caught her breath she reluctantly followed you towards the creek next to Joel. âIâll check out the area, we shouldnât be out here long.â
Joel nodded, standing guard next to Ellie while she wheezed trying to catch her breath. You moved away from them, going to check the surrounding area. Just when you deemed too much time had passed and were about to turn around you could feel something cold pressing into the back of your head.Â
âDonât move.â
You slowly dropped your rifle to the forest floor, raising your hands in surrender as the person behind you pulled back the hammer of their gun. âOkay, itâs okay, we can talk about this.â The gun pulled back abruptly and then they were in front of you.Â
âY/N! Damn girl, almost killed you.â Tommy tucked his gun into his holster and pulled you into a brief hug. You sighed and picked your gun back up.Â
âThe hell are you doing this far out?â
âBeen seeing a lot of infected, had to start patrolling out further.â Tommy peered around you, looking for something. âJoel with you?â
You nodded, leading him back to Joel. There was a brief reunion, nothing much considering theyâve been seeing each other a lot more than they used to. Tommy took Ellie on his horse back to Jackson, said it would be faster that way.Â
You and Joel still had a few more miles left, walking in silence side by side.Â
The silence, as always, had you contemplating your something with Joel. Because you wouldnât say you and Joel were in a relationship. Youâd both loved and lost too much in your life to ever truly be open to something like that again.Â
But you granted each other a softness you didnât offer anyone else. There was an unspoken connection between the two of you that never went acknowledged. You glanced over at him, nudging his arm with your elbow. âMore excited about coffee or a shower?â
âMore excited about you finally showering.â
You scoffed in faux offense and shoved him lightly. His eyes crinkled, the crowâs feet becoming more prominent as he smirked at you. âJerk. I smell amazing,â that was a blatant lie. Neither of you smelled great. Itâd been about a week since youâd had a chance to really freshen up. Still, it was always fun to mess with him a little bit.Â
When you finally made it to Jackson you moved quickly through the inspection station, showing the medics your bite-free body and then headed towards Ellie.Â
She was already knocked out, whatever flu medicine theyâd managed to scrounge up had done its job quickly. Maria led you to a house at the far end of town, you watched as Joel entered the one across from you.Â
You showered, enjoying the foreign feeling of fresh, hot, water running over your skin. You used the clothes Maria provided you, but after an hour of just wandering around the house you were starting to feel restless.Â
You had sat on the couch, stared at the black screen of the TV, and gotten back up about three times. You huffed out an irritated breath and headed towards the door. You werenât sure where you were going but the quiet was starting to feel suffocating.Â
The pristine, cozy house, was overwhelming you with memories of a past best left forgotten. You opened the door-
âWhy!â
âShit,â Joel grimaced, offering you an awkward pat on the shoulder instead of an apology. You rubbed your forehead, pain radiating from where heâd hit you. âI was trying to knock, didnât think youâd open the door.â
You sighed, glancing up at him and shrugging. âI canât stand being in here. House is tooâŚâ
âBig,â he finished. You nodded, stepping outside and joining him on the porch. You both started walking, heading towards his house, the one that actually had chairs on the patio. Luckily the houses you were staying in this time around were farther away from everyone else.Â
People walking with their families was a distant noise that was barely discernible.Â
Families
The thought made you want to scoff. Families in the apocalypse, fucking ridiculous. âItâs peaceful here.â
âFor them,â you glanced at Joel and he seemed to share the same thought as you. Youâd changed too much, spilled too much blood to ever let yourself be fully comfortable in a place like this.Â
âDo you think you could ever be happy here?âÂ
You glanced across the street at the large looming house you had just been in. âNot in there, itâs too big for one person.â He nodded, his fingers drumming a soundless tune against his jeans while he sat with you.Â
âWent down and saw Ellie while you were cleaning up. Sheâs making friends.â
You looked at him in astonishment. Hard to believe she was bedridden and being pleasant. He laughed a little and shook his head. âWell, I suppose they were interrogating her more than anything.â
You smiled slightly, âThatâs more like it.âÂ
He was looking off at the town, viewing the few distant people you could see. âSheâs been asking to come back a lot more. I think she likes movie nights.â You sighed, knowing where this was going. You supposed the change was inevitable, you had just really hoped that you could push it off a little while longer.Â
You just werenât ready.Â
âHouse is too big for me, too. Maybe it needs two people.â He was already looking at you when you turned to face him. His face didnât betray anything but a type of tiredness that was set deep in someoneâs bones.Â
You could say no, go off on your own. Youâd make it a little while longer but the loneliness would get to you and eventually youâd slip up. Be torn apart or turned.Â
Besides, you werenât ready to leave them, leave him. Not yet.Â
âYeah, maybe.â
One Year Later
âMorning.â
You groaned at the sound of Joelâs voice, rolling over and covering your head with a pillow. He laughed and you could feel it reverberate through your back where his chest was resting on you.Â
âCome on, darling. Itâs noon, you have to take care of the sheep today.âÂ
You werenât exactly verbal when youâre woken up abruptly. So you just grumbled-most likely something incredibly rude-under your breath and curled up into a ball.
Joel chuckled again, his arms wrapped around your waist and rolled you over. He dragged you out of the warmth of the blankets and directly back into the sunlit room. âJoel,â you groaned. âFive more minutes.â
âNope.â He stood up, you still slightly in his arms. He half carried and half dragged you out of bed. You held onto the blankets and kept your eyes closed as long as you could. But when your feet touched the cool wood you conceded that your day had started. Whether you wanted it to or not. âUgh, youâre a real piece of work. You know that?â
Joel let out a surprised scoff as you walked past him into the bathroom. You could hear him muttering under his breath about who was really the piece of work in this home. But he didnât say anything to you, just joined you at the sink to brush his teeth.
Sometimes the normalcy was nice. Youâd wake up and most days Joel was there next to you. Or he was making you both breakfast, or occasionally a note left next to a plate of food telling you he was out on patrol.Â
You spent most of your time together, sharing the big old house while Ellie slept in the converted shed out back. But days like today, where he tried to joke with you while he brushed his teeth but his voice was too thick with sleep and you couldnât understand his accent, they made you ache.Â
Your heart would pulse painfully and youâd have to look away from him. You shared the same bed, lived in the same house. But you didnât mean anything to him. You were just an old friend there to keep him warm at night.Â
Youâre pretty sure youâd both been traveling together for so long that it was habit and necessity that kept you together more than anything. You wished, yearned for more from him, but you knew he could never give it to you. You knew it was an impossible ask.Â
Which made staying with him start to feel more suffocating. You feel like another part of his routine. Something akin to brushing his teeth rather than genuinely wanting you around, a chore. And you couldnât handle that feeling anymore.Â
You were drowning in the comfort of Jackson. But you were too much of a coward to ever fully leave him. Too hopeful to let go of that one fleeting feeling that maybe one day you could be more to him.
Joel smiled at you as you made your way downstairs. âI got your lunch, you should probably head out now. Youâre already late.â
You took the bag from him, thanking him and left for the sheep. And that night when your shift was over youâd look over at Joelâs house. Youâd see him strumming lightly on his guitar as he waited for you and youâd slip out of Jacksonâs walls. Unwilling to face another night of heartache that made you feel so ridiculous.Â
2 Years Later
âY/N in here? Jesseâs looking for her.â
Joel glanced up from his guitar, he had been tuning it when Ellieâs head popped over his porch rail. âNo, havenât seen her in a couple days.â
Heâd known being in Jackson was too much for you. Sometimes when he was getting a drink at the bar he could feel his skin crawling with how many people were surrounding him. His instinct to always be on guard, always be alert, was not easily lost after so many years.Â
There was the sirenâs call of peace here in this town, but he still had to patrol. Still had you, Ellie, and himself to look out for. He could never afford to let himself fully settle into the calm reprieve of Jackson. It would end up screwing him over only when he was outside the safety of the walls.Â
So he sat, always a curling, burning feeling in his stomach as he tried to untense his shoulders. Join his brother for a âfamilyâ dinner. Plaster on as friendly a grimace as he could when his neighbors would wave in the morning.Â
You were not the same. You didnât bother with pretending to be happy for Ellieâs comfort. You patrolled near constantly, outside the walls more than you were in. Which set him even more on edge. Youâd be gone for days at a time before mysteriously appearing in his bed one morning.Â
Youâd smile then, as genuine a smile you could manage. Every time heâd ask where youâd gone and you would tell him you needed some air. He never asked what you did on the outside, where the bruises came from or what youâd done to earn them.Â
You would eat breakfast, listen to him strum on his guitar and in a few more days disappear again. He thinks one of these days, now that Ellieâs grown, he might just disappear alongside you. Ellie sighed, âWhatâs Jesse want with her?â Joel asked.Â
âHe was gonna have her patrol with him today,â she had a shit-eating grin on her face as she propped her head in her hand. âI think heâs got a crush on her.â
Joel barked out a laugh, imagining Jesse pining after someone as disinterested as you. Heâs sure he just admires you like he admires Joel. He looks up to you, probably just presents differently. âIâd love to see him try something,â he said through laughter.
Ellie shook her head, walking up the stairs and sitting next to him. âIâm pretty sure heâs terrified of her.â
He shook his head, âRough combo.â Poor kid probably didnât realize you werenât mean, you just had a real bad resting face. âYa know, I gotta head out soon. I can see if I can find her.â
Ellie perked up, crossing her legs as she leaned back in the rocking chair. âWould you?â
âSure,â Joel went to place his guitar down but Ellie stopped him.Â
âWhatâre you working on?â
âOh,â he glanced at the instrument and shrugged. He wasnât sure, really. Heâd had to step back from patrolling as much as he used to. The cold was fucking with his back and knees. Made it harder for him to be as fast as he should be. You liked to tease him about it, call him an old man, but he caught you rubbing your shoulder every time it was about to rain.Â
But without the ability to go on rides or kill infected, he was beginning to feel restless again. An uncomfortable thrumming under his skin that screamed at him to move, do something. So he screwed around with the guitar, tried to sing something, but nothing came out.Â
He passed it over to Ellie, she immediately propped it on her lap, strumming something soft. âNothing really, just needed something to do.â He sat with her a little while longer, giving her pointers as she went over some songs sheâd been writing.Â
He groaned as he got off the old rocking chair, saying goodbye to Ellie and heading to the stables. He was sure you were nearby, somewhere in a three mile perimeter of town. Youâd been gone about four days, usually youâd be coming back by now.Â
Tommy was waiting for him as he got his horse. âPartnering up today.â
âAlright,â Joel rode up to the barred gate of Jackson, waiting for the doors to open. âEllie wanted me to look for Y/N while weâre out here.â
Tommyâs brows furrowed as he glanced at him. âShe still gone?â
Joel hummed an affirmative, brushing the hair out of his eyes in irritation. Youâd have to cut it again, it had gotten too damn long. He felt like one of the stupid teenage boys in town, always blowing his damn hair out of his face.Â
âWhereâd ya wanna head first?â
âShe likes lurking around that old ski resort. Weâll see if sheâs there first. If not, Iâm sure sheâll pop up soon.âÂ
They rode in silence for a little while before Tommy sighed. Clearly growing bored with the lack of conversation. Joel let his brother suffer, watching in amusement as he shifted back and forth in his saddle and tried to think of what to say.Â
He finally broke, showing Tommy some mercy. âJesus, boy, spit it out.â
âItâs just,â Tommy paused, slowing down his mare to match Joelâs slow pace. âIt doesnât bother you?â
âWhat?â
âHer being out her on her own all the time. I mean, if Maria left as often as Y/N does Iâd be losing my mind.â
âWell,â Joel sighed, âIâm a lot tougher than you are.â
Tommy scoffed, glaring at him. âWhatever smartass, I wasnât screwing around, I want to know.â
âFine. Donât know why youâre so damn interested.â Joel shrugged, thinking about it before finally answering. âYeah, I guess it bothers me, a little. I mean, Iâve known her a long time. I know she can handle herself, Iâm not really worried about her dying or nothing. Iâm more worried about her just deciding she wants to be gone for good and leaving.â
Tommy was quiet for a bit, leaving Joel uncomfortable. The answer wasnât very deep. It didnât share a lot, but it left him feeling a particular shade of vulnerable that had him shifting around. He rolled his shoulders back, focusing on the feeling of snow nipping at his cheeks rather than his younger brotherâs nosy stare.Â
âI woudlnât worry about that.â
âYeah,â Joelâs voice was curt, snappier than usual. âWhyâs that?â
âWell, I donât fucking know why, but she likes you. Likes Ellie, she might not love Jackson, but she wouldnât just leave you guys.â
âSince when the hell are you an expert?â
Tommy smirked, âSince I got married.â Joel rolled his eyes, his brother had gotten entirely too smug when he married Maria. Suddenly, being married, made him an expert in anything and everything. He certaintly didnât know a damn thing about Joelâs love life.Â
Or lack thereof.Â
Because youâd never talked about what you were, if you even were anything. Thatâs probably why it set him on edge so much when you left. You werenât his to love or keep-honestly he wasnât sure he was capable of that type of love anymore.Â
You were friends. Allies more than anything, which was arguably more important in this world. There was nothing to tie you to him or encourage you to stay.Â
He wasnât deluded enough to believe youâd stay for Ellie. She was pretty much an adult now, and youâd never been a parent before. You didnât know what the pain of losing a child was, she wasnât as important to you as she was to him.Â
He had no damn idea what had kept you here for so long. But he knew you were getting restless and he didnât know how to help.Â
They made it to the ski lodge and immediately leapt off their horses. There were screams coming from inside, screams that sounded a lot like yours. Joel ran for the doors, finger already on the trigger when the doors blew open.Â
You looked up at him in surprise, âJoel! Whatâre you doing out here?â He drew back, stopping himself from slamming into you.Â
His eyes scanned your form, you were covered head to toe in gore. The bandanna pushing your hair back had been a light blue, but now it was completely dyed red. Your jacket was in shreds. But you were still smiling up at him, then Tommy.Â
âJesus H Christ woman,â Tommy muttered behind him.Â
You looked down at yourself, âOh, yeah.â You sighed and once again were staring at Joel. âFucking clickers, werenât here before.â
âAre you alright? Were you bit?â
You waved off Joelâs concern like he was being dramatic. Like you werenât standing before him covered head to toe in guts. âIâm fine.â
âDammit,â you jumped slightly at the sound of his voice. He was getting a little louder, voice a little deeper as his frustration grew. He hated when you were this flippant about basic safety. âI told you to stop coming out so much, that weâd been-â
âSeeing more hordes. I know, sorry Joel, I didnât mean to freak you out. Iâll,â you trailed off, your eyes darting around before reluctantly landing back on his. âI promise Iâll stop leaving.â
Joel glanced behind himself, but Tommy had wandered back over to the horses. He was the opposite of subtle as he whistled, clearly giving you as much privacy as he could. Joel turned back towards you and took a step closer.Â
âIâm not telling you to stop coming out here completely. I donât want to take that from you.â
You shook your head, stepping closer as you shivered. Joel figured your jacket was in tatters and you were probably freezing your ass off. He took off one of his own coats and draped it over you. âIâm being reckless, risking infecting you and Ellie by coming out so much. Besides, itâs starting to get a little lonely.â
âWell,â Joel gave you a brief smile, âmaybe one of these days you should wake me up when you slip away. Iâll come out here with you.â
You grinned, âThink youâd be able to keep up, old man?â
He scoffed, slinging an arm over your shoulder and leading you back to his horse. âCould you?â
You laughed, âWith you? Probably not.â He was just about to join you up on Sunny when all three of you heard a strange noise coming up towards the lifts. You had cleared out the resort. So, what could it be?
You hopped off Sunny quickly, pulling out one of your guns and following Tommy and Joel as they went back through the clicker infested hellhole youâd just cleared. The noises got louder, it sounded a lot like feet pounding up the mountain.Â
You made it outside, near the resort's old supply sheds. You were checking out the area, double checking you didnât miss any infected. You were about to turn back around when you heard a scream.Â
You ran towards the source of the noise, watching as a woman was crushed under a swarming body of infested. The only thing separating her from them was a flimsy metal gate. Tommy rushed forward before either you or Joel could stop him. Grabbing her and dragging her out from the bodies.Â
âFuck!â
âTommy!â
Both of you wanted to scream at him. That was such an unbelievably stupid thing to do. Sheâd had at least fifty infected on top of her, thereâs no way she wasnât bit. But beyond that she was a stranger, you had no idea if she was a piece of shit that would lead raiders right back to Jackson or not.Â
You didnât have time to scold him, though, the swarm was screaming, racing towards you all. You ran back into the resort, heart racing as you slammed the doors to the lift closed behind you. âTommy!â Joel called out, âHelp me move this!â
They worked on wheeling a broke down lift towards an open window. You turned towards the hulking woman, âGot a gun?â
She nodded and you tossed her some ammo, âGood. Donât fucking miss.â You raced throughout the station, trying to keep infected off Tommy and Joel while they moved the lift. But there was only so much you could do. Your rifle had jammed and you had used most of your supplies taking the clickers out earlier.Â
And these bastards were fast, they seemed faster than normal. Maybe the cold irritated them or something.Â
You screamed, taken off your feet as a runner threw itself at you. You rolled over, shoving your gun in its mouth and pulling the trigger. Brains splattered onto your face and before you could even roll it off of you there was another one leaping at you.Â
Before it could sink its teeth in your neck there was the warm feeling of blood trailing down your chest. Joel stood over you, machete buried in the infectedâs back as he yanked you to your feet. He didnât let you walk, grabbing you and practically sending you flying towards Tommy.Â
You scrambled up the lift and through the window, running towards the horses and mounting Sunny. You grabbed Tommyâs mare and rode the horses back to the open window. You watched the others spill out, keeping an eye out for any more infected and letting Joel hop up in front of you.Â
Tommy and the woman shared a horse as she screamed out instructions to head towards the old mansion at the top of the mountain. You were too busy keeping infected away from your group to fully realize where you were going until it was too late.Â
You were already through the gates of the mansion, infected being set on fire behind you when you grasped the situation at hand.Â
Youâd just wandered into some strangerâs camp, nearly completely empty on ammo, battered and tired. You didnât know who she was or who her people were. Joel and Tommy seemed to be realizing that too, each of them tensing up as they got off the horses.Â
âThanks for the help back there. Iâm Abby.â
Joel offered you a hand down, you hopped off Sunny and glanced around the garage. You were definitely fucking outnumbered and they had way more ammo than you.Â
You hid slightly behind Joel, taking in the amount of people and trying to gauge how many guns were in the garage. Your eye snagged on a lone shotgun on a workstation and the bullets surrounding it.Â
âIâm Tommy, this is my brother JoelâŚâ Tommyâs voice trailed off before he could introduce you. Instantly everyone in the room had turned to stare at Joel, and every single one of them looked hostile. Like heâd punched each of them in the face at one point.Â
And honestly with the amount of people heâs screwed over you wouldnât be surprised. Still, this was not promising.Â
Joel tensed up in front of you, nudging you slightly behind Sunny. You ducked behind her, hoping to go unnoticed by the rest of them and praying that Sunny didnât buck out at you.Â
Abby sucked on her teeth. She stared at Joel for a long minute before nodding her head towards the door and heading up the stairs. âJoel,â you whispered.
He shook his head, subtly waving you back into place as he was forced to follow the others up the stairs. You watched them herd him and Tommy out, one of the men in the back checked his ammo was loaded and you felt your throat seize in panic.Â
Shit shitshitshitshitshit
Okay, this turned into a clusterfuck so insanely fast. You waited until every set of footsteps was a distant echo to move out from behind the horses. You were nearly out the door when you double backed for the shotgun.Â
You heard a shout from upstairs, your head whipping towards the open door. You raced up the stairs, âTommy!â It was Joel shouting, panic lacing his voice.Â
You can never say what happened next exactly. You made it up the stairs, heard the sound of a shotgun being cocked and youâd never run that fast in your life.Â
The door to the room was open, all you could see was Abby with a gun in hand, pointing it towards Joel. Your finger was on the trigger before you could even aim properly. The shot missed, hitting the wall behind her, grazing her back slightly.Â
But it caused enough of a distraction, Joel wrenched the gun from her grasp, using the butt of it to knock her out. You shot at one of the men pinning Tommy down, it caught him in the side and he dropped to the ground. Crimson pooling out around him.Â
The room went quiet, each of them staring at their dead comrade. âYou cunt,â the woman leapt at you, knife raised in the air. You didnât notice her protruding stomach until you had pulled the trigger. Her legs flew out from under her, nearly completely blown off from the shotgun blast.Â
There was a primal sound of pain. One youâd heard many times in your life. It came from two directions, the pregnant woman bleeding out on the ground and the man who was now flying at you.Â
He knocked you to the ground. You wrestled for control of the shotgun, his hips pinning your pelvis painfully to the floor. You groaned out in pain and panic, shoving all your weight into the gun, bringing it up to catch him in the jaw. His head knocked to the side and you shoved him off of you.Â
Shots were firing all around you, different screams and insults flying past your head. You were tuning in and out, ears ringing as you wrapped your arms around the manâs neck. You pulled until it snapped. When you were done you swiped his pistol from his holster, stepping over the twitching woman below you.Â
There were only three people left when you walked back into the room, Tommy and Joel disposed of them quickly while you grabbed some rope and tied up Abby. She was still knocked out, a bad bruise forming on her head. You can imagine her day was going to get a lot worse when she woke up and saw the carnage around her.Â
It was a slaughter, each of her friendâs lay brutally destroyed at her feet.Â
But, it was their own damn fault. They shouldnât have tried and fucked with you all.Â
âAre you okay?â It was your turn to fuss over Joel. He had clearly been their target. It had to have been someone youâd screwed over, Joel had screwed over. But the list was too long and youâd never seen this woman before.Â
Joel nodded, but there was blood soaking through his jacket. You ignored his protests, ripping the jacket off and inspecting the wound. It wasnât anything too bad, a bullet must have just skimmed his bicep. You wrapped it up pretty quickly, then you let your head fall to his chest.Â
He chuckled slightly, his hand coming behind you to rest on your back. âYou okay?â
âI was scared.â
Your voice was quiet, quiet enough that you almost hoped he had missed your small confession. âWhat?â
His hand had stilled before it moved up your back and lightly cupped your neck. He tilted your head back so you had to look at him, had to make eye contact. âI was scared.â You huffed out, nearly ashamed at presenting yourself like this to him.Â
You didnât get scared, the entire time youâve known him youâve each been fighting for your lives. This wasnât anything new. But something about this really got to you. It felt more final this time. âThey were after you, Joel. Had a gun pointed to your head.â
âI always have a gun pointed at my head, darling. Comes with the territory.â You rolled your eyes and stepped away from him, ignoring the way his hand lingered on your cheek for a moment before it dropped to his side.Â
The door behind you all flew open and all three guns were pointed at the intruder. Ellie raised her hands and stumbled back in shock at the sight of the dead bodies around you all. âHoly shit. What the fuck happened?â
You sighed and lowered your gun, Tommy and Joel doing the same. âEllie, head back to Dina,â you instructed. You were going to have to get some information from Abby, you were sure Joel didnât want her to see the methods about to be used.Â
Ellie opened her mouth to argue but Joel cut her off. âDo as she says, Ellie. Head back to the others and say everythingâs fine and that weâll be back soon.â
She seemed like she wanted to stay, desperately. Instead she conceded and closed the door behind her as she left. You, Joel, and Tommy each shared a look before you got to work.Â
Abby was tied up in a chair, youâd wrapped her up more than you would have with anyone else, mainly because her biceps were the size of your head.Â
When she finally woke up, she immediately started screaming. Youâd moved the bodies of her friends, propping them up in front of her so they were the first thing she saw when she woke up.Â
Tommy had left for Jackson, made sure no one would suspect why you and Joel were gone for so long. Now you were sitting on a table behind Abby while Joel started. âWhat are you doing here?â
âFuck you,â she spat.Â
Joel sighed and tried again, âDoes anyone else know youâre here?â
Same response. It happened a few more times, she was unphased by anything Joel did to her. Just telling him to fuck off more times than you could count. You got sick of it after a while.Â
You hadnât had to torture anyone in a couple years, you were hoping to just get this over with as quickly as possible. You stood up and Joel let go of Abbyâs chair, backing away from her.Â
âMy partner,â you started, âprefers brute force to get the answers he wants. Me,â you stood in front of Abby and pulled out your hunting knife. âIâm a little more creative.â
You dug the knife into her skin, peeling back a layer or two of epidermis and ignoring the way she screamed. Twenty years ago, you might have felt guilty for this. Now, sheâd tried to hurt Joel, sheâd brought this on herself.Â
Five pulled nails and a lot of skin later she finally squealed. No one knew they were out here. They were stationed in Seattle and wouldnât come looking. Joel had killed her father, the doctor from the hospital, and she wanted revenge.Â
You rolled your eyes, pointing out the hypocrisy of her actions. How many fathers had she killed on her way here to get to Joel. How many lives had she taken to protect someone she loved. When she tried to argue you slit her throat and dragged the bodies to be put in the pile of burned infested.Â
âDamn.â You sat behind Joel on Sunny, watching the bodies go up in flames. He turned her around, heading back towards Jackson. âWhat a way to start the day.â
The bed was empty when Joel woke up. He felt surprised, usually you gave him a few days before you left again. But before he could linger on the thought for too long the door to the bedroom was opening and you were walking in. Your back was to him, you were carrying something in your hands.Â
When you turned around you frowned when you saw him already waiting for you. âIt was supposed to be a surprise.â
âWhat are you doing?â
You swatted him away when he stood and tried to help you carry the tray in the room. You put it on the nightstand and shoved him back in bed. He could have resisted, pushed against you, but he let himself fall as he chuckled at the determined look on your face.Â
You hummed and shrugged your shoulders, placing the tray in his lap. âThought Iâd bring you breakfast.â He glanced down, a plate with a stack of pancakes, bacon, and eggs. Most importantly; coffee.Â
âWhere the hellâd you get all this?â You didnât answer, just had a mischievous little smirk on your face while you tidied up the room. Joel caught your wrist as you passed him, he tugged you into bed next to him, careful not to spill the tray. âCome on, help me out with all this. Canât eat it all on my own.â
He could, and would do so eagerly. But it had been a while since heâd eaten breakfast without you rushing out the door. And for once, he was feeling domestic without the crushing weight of guilt turning the taste of your pancakes bitter in his mouth. He wanted to enjoy this, however long it lasted.Â
You didnât bother arguing, picking off some of his food while you both sat in contented silence. Eventually you broke it, sitting at the end of the bed so you could face him while he sipped on his coffee.Â
Lord, he had missed the taste of caffeine.Â
âWhere are you working today?â
âPromised Bob Iâd help him out with shoeing the horses today. You?â
âHelping Maria with fixing up that new classroom in school.â
âYou're not leaving? You've been hanginâ around here a lot.â
He knew instantly he shouldnât have opened his mouth.Â
What once had been easy silence instantly turned tense. The warm sun that had filtered through the blinds was right in his eyes and causing a headache. The sheets were scratchy and that blank look on your face was oppressive.Â
Your easygoing smile, one he hadnât seen in a long time, dropped from your face and you shifted uncomfortably on top of the comforter. âYeah, guess you're right.â
âDidnât mean it like-â
You stood up, patting his leg with an awkward stiltedness and moved to the closet. âI should head out, promised Maria weâd get it done by end of day.âÂ
He knew what he said had been wrong, but he wasnât completely sure what about it was so wrong. He watched you leave without another word and sighed to himself, getting out of bed and forcing himself from the comfort of the house.Â
Heâd only had a moment, one singular moment, where heâd finally been able to relax for once. And he didnât feel restless, or anxious, or guilty about it. Heâd felt at ease, a feeling so foreign it was halfway through the day before heâd finally been able to identify it.Â
He was in the middle of cleaning Sunnyâs hoof and heâd nearly gotten kicked in the face with his distraction.Â
But he didnât have any sort of epiphany over what could have possibly upset you so much.Â
A normal person, not you apparently, would be completely unbothered by Joelâs question. Because thatâs all it was. A question, a simple, understandable, inquiry about why someone as flighty as you had been in one place for so long.Â
Still it stung. Heâd said with a tone like âWhy the hell are you still in my house?â And in a crazy, uber-paranoid-lady way, it was confirmation of what you were to him. You were a daily task, necessity, and required comfort, but you were not something permanent. And youâd deluded yourself into believing you were something more. Your own fault, not something to place on Joelâs shoulders.Â
Still, the bitter taste of rejection was a hard one to get off the tongue.Â
âGod, Iâm insane.â
âWhat was that?â
You glanced up at Maria, momentarily having forgotten you werenât alone. âUm, nothing, sorry.â You let yourself get lost in the repetitive motion of painting the walls of the classroom. Using old stencils theyâd found or created to do a row of ABCâs and numbers along the perimeter of the wall.Â
How is this what you turned into?Â
Youâd gone from a deadbeat smuggler whoâd kill without a second thought to someone painting an elementary classroom worrying about boys.Â
Well, men, you supposed. Seemed unfair to put Joel in the same category as someone like Jesse.Â
Even though you were sure that Jesse would never make you feel like a chore instead of a person.Â
Annnnnd⌠new low reached, considering Jesse as a viable option for dating. Damn, you needed a hobby or something.Â
Around noon Tommy stopped by, he had sandwiches from Seth and you didnât want to think about the lengths heâd gone through to get them from the cantankerous old asshole.Â
âSo,â there was a certain tone of voice Tommy would get when he was about to meddle in someoneâs business. You stopped midchew to stare at him in suspicion while he smirked. Maria eyed her husband and simply sighed, resigned to let him interrogate you. âYou and Joel.â
You huffed, swallowing the rest of your food and throwing the sandwich down on the plate next to you. âThis was a bribe wasnât it?â
He laughed, âYep.âÂ
It was interesting to you how different Joel and Tommy were. Joelâs accent was gruff, commanding, most times hard to understand. Especially when he was pissed off. Tommy had a lightness to him the both of you lacked. You assumed it came from Jackson, heâd been here a lot longer than either of you. And heâd also found Maria.Â
He also didnât know how to butt out. A skill Joel, thankfully, understood. âJust curious about you two. You know, Joelâs seemed a lot happier in Jackson now that youâve been around longer than a week.â
âWell, I think heâs getting a little sick of me.â
Tommy frowned, âWhyâs that?â
You shrugged, taking another bite before answering. âI donât know, just something he said this morning.â
âWhatâd he say?â
âDamn, Tommy, I canât remember. It was how he said it, I guess.â You huffed and glared at him, âLook weâre not your new version of the bachelor, alright. Butt out.â
Maria opened her mouth, probably to scold you for being a bitch. Tommy held up a hand and shook his head. âAlright, youâre right. Iâm sorry.â
âThatâs it?â You asked, watching as he finished his sandwich and wiped his hands on his jeans.
âYep,â he leaned over to kiss Maria on the cheek and gave you a strong pat on the back. âThatâs it. Message received, Iâll just butt out now.â
Both you and Maria watched him go, a suspicious look on both of your faces as he went. Tommy never gave up that easy, ever. âYou know heâs up to something, right?â
You glanced over at Maria, sighing as you picked up your paintbrush again. âI know.â
The answer to what exactly heâd been planning came three days later.Â
Despite yourself and your feelings of rejection, youâd stayed in Jackson. Youâd been paranoid since the run in with Abby and her people. It was dangerous for Joel to stay in one place, word would spread and old enemies would know where to find him.Â
That thought plagued you every time you glanced at the door out of Jackson. If something happened while you were gone and pouting over something petty, youâd never forgive yourself.Â
But you did put some distance between you and Joel. Staying in the guest room instead of his, not bringing him breakfast like some wife from the fifties. Youâd put up boundaries where there werenât any before, determined not to be used as some sort of daily comfort.Â
And if Joel had anything against these new unsaid rules, he didnât react. Which kind of pissed you off more. Trust, if there was a therapist you would see one. Youâre aware your train of thinking isnât what most would consider healthy.Â
But there isnât, so you just force yourself to push it down everyday and keep going. Like you always have. It wasnât until you got here that rejections or emotions meant anything to you. This place was making you too damn soft.Â
Tommy dropped by one night and invited both you and Joel over to his for dinner and Joel had accepted before you could say no.Â
There wasnât much you could bring over, you couldnât cook and didnât feel like burning down the kitchen trying. So you stole some flowers from the garden of the mean old lady that lived next to you while Joel kept watch.Â
Maria and Tommyâs house wasnât too far from you and Joel, but god, walking next to him youâd think they lived a mile away.Â
âYou know, foods gonna be gone by the time we get there.â
Joel huffed out a short laugh. âWe got time. Feel like youâre always tryna rush off lately.â You didnât have an answer for him, not one that wouldnât reveal why you didnât want to be alone with him. So you just shrugged.Â
You could feel him staring at you, eyes drilling holes in the back of your head, but you refused to say anything. âHowâs the guest room?â
The question caught you off guard, you stumbled over your own feet for a second before turning around to face him. âUh, fine. Bedâs smaller, I guess. But I donât have a giant hogging the sheets,â you attempted to smile at him. But he didnât seem to find anything funny about your response.Â
His brows were furrowed, lips set in a pissy sort of line. You finally caught on to the undertones of anger in his voice. The special sort of gruffness that only comes out when heâs pissed off.Â
âWhy?â
He shrugged, âJust wondering.â And that was it. He brushed past where youâd stopped walking to face him. His shoulder clipping you as he did and was walking off to Tommyâs, leaving you behind.Â
You scoffed at the attitude. Not entirely sure what youâd done to deserve it and followed after him. The both of you finished the walk in angered silence, neither one of you aware why the other was so angry. You just were.Â
When Tommy opened the door the smile on his face quickly turned into a smirk. âThere you two are. Trouble in paradise?â
You shoved the flowers into his chest and stormed past him. âFor Maria.â
You heard Joel mutter the same thing youâd told Tommy a few days ago. âButt out.â
Maria was in the kitchen, finishing off whatever meat sheâd decided to cook for you all tonight. Youâd gotten so used to the QZâs strange square ration bars, sometimes you struggled actually identifying real food.Â
You helped her set the table, ignoring the stares of both men on your back and were about to sit down⌠When Tommy literally dove under you to force you to sit next to Joel.Â
You glared at him while you circled the table, throwing yourself down into the chair and sighing at the self-satisfied look on his face. âYour brotherâs insufferable.â
Joel grumbled but didnât say anything. So you were getting the silent treatment now. Really?Â
Fucking child.Â
âAlright, dinner is served.â Maria placed the roast on the table and took a seat beside Tommy, smiling at you all. She either didnât notice or didnât care how tense it was on your and Joelâs side.Â
âThank you, Maria.â
You forced a smile, not one to let Joel be the only one with manners. âYes, thank you, Maria.â She hummed, carving into the roast and taking a slice for herself and Tommy. You reached for the knife and fork but Joel beat you to it.Â
He cut off a portion and dropped it down on your plate, the mash potatoes spreading slightly at the impact. You sighed, muttering a belligerent thank you and took a bite.Â
Couldnât help himself could he? Always the Texan gentleman.Â
It was infuriating.Â
For a few minutes there was only the sound of metal scraping porcelain. And you felt bad, honestly, Maria and Tommy invited you both over for a nice dinner and you were pouting like toddlers.Â
You werenât even sure why you were upset with each other!
Obviously, you were still stinging from Joelâs use of your ârelationship.â But you had no clue what had crawled up his ass and died. âCan you pass the bread?â
You looked up from your plate, staring at the side of Joelâs head. He continued to shovel food in his face. âJoel?â Nothing, not even a twitch.Â
You reached across from him, purposefully shoving your arm in front of him so he couldnât eat the bite on his fork and grabbed the bread basket. âAinât got manners, now?â He growled at you, his voice barely above a whisper.Â
âSays you,â you hissed back. This was devolving into childish anger so quickly. And you didnât know why!Â
God, what was his problem?
âSo,â Tommy started and you were startled out of your glaring match with Joel. âY/N, you know Bob?â
You slowly turned away from Joel and nodded. âYeah, the horse guy.â
âYeah, heâs been asking about you.â Tommy took another bite of food and shrugged, âTold him you were free this Saturday.â
You ignored Joelâs fork clanking loudly against his plate and shook your head. âNo Iâm not. Iâm patrolling with Joel.â
Tommy waved you off, âNah, donât worry about it. You need to get out more anyway. Socialize some.â
âTommy,â Joel started. His voice was low, an unspoken warning lacing it. âYou need to stop meddling.â
âWhat? Youâve got a problem with a little date, Joel?â
You glanced between the two, hidden in their stares was a secret language only the brothers were privy to. There was a tense silence before Joel was picking his fork back up and eating, refusing to make eye contact with anyone at the table.Â
âNot interested, Tommy. Thanks though.â It would feel wrong going on some blind date like you werenât currently pining over the man you lived with. Besides, you were past the period of life where you wanted to âdate.â About one apocalypse past it.Â
âToo bad, youâre going.â You opened your mouth to argue but both Tommy and Maria were leveling you with glares that allowed no room for negotiation. Since when did Maria join him in these ridiculous schemes?
âWeâre having our harvest festival this weekend,â Maria stated. âBob will accompany you.â
The rest of dinner was spent with Tommy and Maria blabbering away while you and Joel fumed in your seats. You didnât know his reason but you were pretty pissed off you were being forced into a date.Â
One, you were planning on skipping the stupid fucking harvest thing. It was a waste of resources and you didnât understand why they clung to old traditions so desperately.Â
Two, you didnât want to go on a date. The only man you wanted to be with was sitting next to you and currently taking his anger out on a piece of bread.Â
You let your mind fade into the background. Your eyes tracked the movements of Joelâs hands while he ate, no longer hearing Tommy and Maria. Until you blinked and dinner was over and Joel was waiting for you by the door.Â
You nearly jumped at how loudly Joel slammed the door closed. You toed your boots off, watching him throw his jacket on the kitchen chair and reach for the bottle of whiskey on the counter. He ignored you, heading up the stairs and into his office.Â
You took in a deep breath, trying to shake off the funk from the last couple of days. Slowly you made your way up the stairs, knocking on the doorframe to his office.Â
He was just sitting in his chair, staring at the guitar on his desk. There was a glass of amber liquor in his hand, but he wasnât making any moves to drink more. âWanna talk?â
ââBout what?â He placed the glass on the table and picked up the new strings for his guitar.Â
âI donât know,â you walked in and sat down on the stool next to him. âYouâve seemed off since we left for Tommyâs.âÂ
His finger drummed across the denim of his jeans. He stared through the window, the lights of Jackson casting a warm glow over his face.Â
If you tilted your head just right it softened him. The scars faded, the only wrinkles you could see were smile lines and you could see a shadow of the man he once was. The father, brother, contractor, someone long lost to the cruelties of time and the world outside these walls.Â
âA date,â he scoffed. âMy brother never knows when to stop, does he?â You didnât bother answering. You know he wasnât talking to you, just thinking out loud.Â
You propped your elbow on his desk, resting your head while you waited for him to collect his thoughts. He let out a long sigh, his eyes on the guitar while he addressed you.Â
âYou drive me insane, you know that?â
âIâm aware.â
He cracked, his lips lifting slightly at the corners. Barely a smile, but it was better than nothing. âI think Iâve got you figured out. Think I finally understand how this,â he gestures between the two of you, âworks. Then you disappear, or bring me breakfast, or you suddenly leave and start sleeping in another bed and Iâm lost all over again.â
You shifted in your seat, fiddling with your nails, trying to figure out what he meant. If either of you were confused, it was you. âWhatâre you talking âbout, Joel?â
He sighed and finally looked at you, âTalkinâ about us. Iâm talking about how infuriating you are.â
Your brows furrowed, scoffing slightly at the tone of his voice. He was still angry, for no damn reason. You stood up, ready to leave, when his hand wrapped around your wrist. âDidnât say I was done, sweetheart.â
You gasped when he tugged you down. You landed in his lap, his legs spreading to accommodate you. âJoel whatâre you doing?â
âSomething Iâve been putting off for too damn long.â
Fireworks donât go off somewhere in the distance and the world doesnât stop. But your heart races and your body tingles when you taste the whiskey on his lips. You become hyper aware of each individual strand when his hand comes up to bury itself in your hair.Â
And when your lips part to let him in you swear youâve never felt like this before. Your body is working like youâre running from something, getting ready to fight something off, but itâs the first time in a while your mind is completely calm.Â
You shift, your legs wrapping around his waist as a blanket of calm drapes itself over you. It rushes through you like a raging river, shutting everything unnecessary down.Â
You donât worry if youâre too out of practice, not having kissed anyone in a long while. You donât think about if you're too stiff on his lap. You run your hands over his chest, squeezing the muscles of his arms and then letting them delve into his hair.Â
At a certain point, youâll have to breathe. Youâll have to talk about what this means for the two of you. But for right now youâre content, at ease, happy to just live the rest of your days in this moment.Â
Kissing Joel Miller like thereâs nothing outside these walls, no other purpose but to be with him.

I HAVE RETURNED !!!
My vacation is over, and Harry Potter World has been left behind. (đđđ) I also have the urge to finish the 100k fanfic for Fred Weasley I started in middle school, but that's another day's problem.
I'm going to be working on responding to comments and messages that I've gotten over the past week. I have a few good ideas for some long Logan fics- so, stay tuned!!
I am so sorry you guys!! I have been trying to get this last chapter of Hell Hath No Fury written but I am very sick. I just went to the doctor today to get some meds, so fingers crossed that will help. The chapter itself is nearly done but Iâm not going to finish this series off with a half-assed chapter that is barely comprehensible because I was high off NyQuil when I wrote it. You guys have been so patient and such amazing readers already, if you just give me a few more days I should have the end of this story ready for you
(maybe youâll get an epilogue too â¤ď¸đ)
How About a Nuke?
Part I / Part II / Part III
The ghoul x fem!reader A/N: Part three is going to be when it gets juicy, this is just them becoming reacquainted. Youâll get the good angst in the next parts. Summary: Your dreams of stardom and fame have been blown away. Your old life is lost to the sands of this new world and you find yourself utterly confused. Thereâs a man who looks an awful lot like Cooper yelling at you, but itâs not the man you remember loving. Not anymore.
For two days heâs been following the sound of sirens. With no new bounties, he hasnât got much else to do with his time. Plus, heâs hoping that maybe if he figures out whatâs been causing all this noise he can shut it the fuck up. Didnât matter how far he walked, the blaring wail was echoing across the whole damn wasteland.Â
A cough started up in his chest, itching into his throat and rattling his whole body as it ripped its way out of him. He tried to walk through the discomfort but it wouldnât let him. He leaned over, hands braced on his knees, and coughed so hard he could feel ass jerky coming back up from his âdinnerâ last night. He clamped a hand over his mouth and forced the bile down. Frantic hands dug through the bag on his side, shaking as he ripped the box open and grabbed his inhaler.Â
It took a minute before the drugs had the desired effect, and even then he was still fighting back nausea. Heâs got to find a new dealer, that bitch in Filly was watering down her supply and he knew it. Not just that, she was overcharging too, on account of his being a ghoul.Â
Even in the apocalypse money still managed to rule the world. Even if it was in the form of Nuka caps. He walked a little further before leaning against a boulder for a break. He wiped spittle off his lips and surveyed his surroundings.Â
There was a faded old billboard sunken into the sand, only half of it sticking out. The paper was curled and browned from age and the sun, but he could make it out well enough. Quench Your Thirst, it wasnât one of hers, though. It was the girl theyâd replaced her with. He contemplated shooting it, just so he wouldnât have to stare at the girl anymore, but it was a waste of bullets.Â
Instead, he pushed off the rock and forced himself to keep going. The noise was unbearable now, rattling around his brain and making his ears bleed the closer he got. He must be right on it, only a little while longer and heâd finally turn the damn thing off.Â
He lifted a leathered hand to block the sun out of his eyes. He kept squinting, disbelieving in the sight before him. Vault 111 was sitting pretty among the skeletons and dunes of sand. Itâs big white numbers upside down as the door was slid open, alarms ringing out and red flashing lights dancing around within the vault.Â
He couldnât believe it. Vault dwellers were practically extinct in the Wastelands, nevermind actually getting into their vaults. But here this one sat, open and ready for the taking. Normally, he wouldnât risk it, even just to turn off those fucking alarms. But he had just used his last vial and if he didnât get his hands on some good shit soon, well, best not to imagine it.Â
Hand on his holster he started forward, eyes darting back and forth to make sure this wasnât some sort of trap set by raiders. He didnât imagine they were smart enough to do that, but apparently Muldaverâs been on the move, this could be her peopleâs doing. Heâd rather not have to listen to someone whining on about a better life and a kind society.Â
Heâd believe it when he saw it. All people were capable of was greed and lust, itâs been the same before the bombs and it will be the same after.Â
He stepped inside, eyes pained as they adjusted to the stark contrast of the glaring sun outside and the soft fluorescent lights within the vault. He spotted a big red button and slammed his palm down on it. The sirens, thank fuck, shut off, but the lights kept going.Â
There was a gap between his platform and the next. The control panel clearly needed a Pip-Boy to be operated but he didnât see any nearby. He sighed and took a running leap, just barely making it to the other side. Â
He took another suspicious look around, still not quite sure he was completely safe. His chest tightened with the irritating feeling of an oncoming coughing fit. âFuck it,â he muttered, starting through the open doorway without a glance back.Â
Whatever had happened in here had been messy and recent. He kneeled down next to a puddle of blood and dipped an ungloved finger in, still warm. He popped open his holster and tugged out the gun, better to be safe than dead.Â
He had been following the direction the lights had been pointing this whole time, hoping maybe heâd stumble across an infirmary. These vault fucks had to have left at least one bag of radaway behind. So far, though, he didnât have high hopes. Everything was ransacked. The bodies that were left behind had been stripped naked and beaten to unidentifiable pulps.
So far, the vaults had at least been air conditioned. If nothing else he was getting a break from the sweltering heat that trailed him on the surface. Heâd already tested out one of the sinks down here, their water was still functioning. Maybe he could get some of the blood caked under his nails cleaned out.Â
While the air conditioning had been nice, the breeze that was coming from the door across the way would have had goosebumps rising on him if he was still capable of that. His head tilted in contemplation as he stared at it. Above every door was meant to be an indicator of what went on in there.Â
There wasnât for this one, though. And despite knowing better, he had to admit, he was pretty curious. He strode forward, tucking the gun back in his holster and slamming the button on the right side of the door. The second it slid open, whatever had been sealing the noise inside broke.Â
He flinched away from the sounds of sirens and covered his ears, cussing up a storm as he slammed the button once more. It clicked uselessly but didnât send the door down again. âFuck,â he hissed, stepping inside and grunting as the cold bore down on him ten times worse than before.Â
Cryogenics, well, the temperature made sense now.Â
He stared at each of the pods, the windows frosted over with cold and making it impossible to see the people within. He took his time examining them, trying his best to see if anyone he knew was in one of them. Despite it all, he held a little hope that he might see Janey, maybe even Barb.Â
Without any luck he headed towards the terminal, he could probably get the sirens to shut the fuck up this way. Or maybe just get this door closed again.Â
In neon green a warning sign flashed over and over across the screen.Â
LIFE SUPPORT: CRITICAL FAILURE. Â
He glanced back over his shoulder and scoffed. Rich fucks hadnât thought to have a back up, or did they really think their buddy Vault-Tec would keep them safe? He shook his head and clicked away the warning. He peered through the list of commands but couldnât find anything except a list of who was in the pods.Â
He figured he might as well see if he spotted a familiar name. If they were alive he might be able to get some information off of them. It wasnât until the bottom of the list that he saw anything helpful. Your name stood out bright and bold and beside it the message:
LIFE SUPPORT FAILING
RISK OF ASPHYXIATION:Â
The colon blinked a few times and he drummed his finger impatiently on the sides of the terminal. Finally the risk analysis loaded and he let out a rough exhale.Â
RISK OF ASPHYXIATION: IMMINENTÂ
REMOVE SUBJECT IMMEDIATELYÂ
His eyes widened and without thinking he clicked the little button. A moment later he heard something creak open, the seal of the pod broken as air rushed out. He turned around and faced your pod, of course it was the one right beside him.Â
He ran forward, catching you just as you slumped out of the seat. Your skin was like ice, your lips blue and face purple from choking. It was all swollen, like youâd been struggling to get air in for a while before he came. He frowned down at your limp form, shaking you slightly as he waited for you to take in a breath.Â
âHey,â he brought a rough hand down on your cheek, the leather striking loudly against your skin.
Your lips parted and you took in a deep breath, gasping as your hands flew up to your throat. You turned over, falling out of his arms and landing roughly on the metal grates of the floor. He took a step back, watching as you hacked yourself back to life, your lungs nearly coming out with how hard you were coughing.Â
His head tilted as he observed you. You looked damn near the same as the last time he saw you. The only real difference being the slutty little black slip you had on. He scoffed and shook his head. So thatâs where youâd disappeared to, sold yourself out to Vault-Tec for some apocalyptic protection.Â
Lot of good that did you.Â
You clawed at your throat, air feeling like razor blades as you greedily inhaled. Youâre not sure where you are, you can barely feel your extremities, youâve got an uncomfortable draft on your backside. You wince as you sit up, wiping your blurry eyes in the hopes theyâll clear up, metal digs into your skin as you do.Â
Itâs like when you get too cold during winter and your eyes frost over a little bit. Except, this doesnât feel like a little bit. You canât even see your own hand right now. All you can make out is faint outlines of everything, blurry little clouds of color.Â
âHello?â Someone was here, you could tell that much. You just didnât know who. Metal creaked in front of you and you scrambled back. They werenât saying anything. Why werenât they saying anything?Â
You wracked your brain for the last thing you could remember and felt tears building along your lashes. Oh god. âTom?â You called out hesitantly. Maybe theyâd changed their minds. Maybe the men whoâd grabbed you had dumped you off somewhere.Â
You didnât want to think about what theyâd done while you were asleep. You were slowly becoming more aware of your surroundings and very aware of the skimpy slip you had on right now. Not even close to what youâd been wearing when they grabbed you. You wrapped your arms around yourself in a meager attempt at comfort.Â
âThat who you fucked, sweetheart?â
Your brows turned down. âCooper?â He sounded a little rough, his accent more pronounced, but youâd know his voice anywhere. It was as familiar to you as your own. âCooper, where am I?â The tears were spilling freely now the longer he stared at you in silence. At least crying was starting to thaw out your eyes.Â
You could more clearly make out his form now, looming overtop of you like some sort of dark omen. You always felt safe with Coop. When someone pushed you too much or got a little too aggressive, you could go to him.Â
Right now, though, you felt like prey in front of a wolf. There was no kindness in his words and only a cruel accusation in his tone. Dear god, where were you? And why would he think you would ever fool around with any of these sick fucks behind his back?Â
âCooper, please, what happened?â
He barked out a laugh and you flinched back, âWhat happened? Well, lets see what the fuck happened.â You heard more than saw him pace across the metal floors, the spurs on his boots clanking loudly. Had he been at a party and come looking for you?
âYou told me youâd be back for lunch and I didnât see you for another two hundred years.â
Your stomach dropped to the floor, âWhat?â You whispered.Â
He knelt down in front of you. âYour eyes still foggy?â You nodded your head mutely. âWell,â he chuckled but it wasnât the one you knew. This was something mean and sharp. âWhen those clear up, Iâm not gonna look like you remember me, darling. Should probably get out of here before you realize what youâre talking to.â
He made to get up but you shot forward, blindly groping at the dark form of his torso until you latched onto his duster. âCooper, please, Iâm confused. I-â you looked around blindly, hoping to find something to explain how the last thing you remembered was eating pancakes with him. Thereâs no way in hell itâs been two hundred years.Â
âI went to Tomâs to get the script. He made me come in for drinks. There- there were all these men there, they grabbed me and I donât remember anything after that. Cooper, please, I wasnât wearing this when they snatched me. What the hell happened to me?â
There was a moment of silence before he let out a sigh. âYou didnât leave to find some safety in Vault-Tec?â
You frowned and let him go, shoving him away from you with as much force as your frozen muscles could muster up. âFuck you, you think Iâd do that to you? How little do you think of me?â
You reached out for the pod beside you, using it to get to your feet. You felt about as graceful as a newborn foal right now, all gangly limbs and stilted movements. You leaned over, catching your breath as you tried to walk forward.Â
âIf I were you, Iâd get back in that pod and let the world rot away. Youâre not gonna do well on your own out here, honey.â
You heard his spurs moving past you and then made out his form as he walked through the doors of the room. âCooper?â You called out, but you knew it was pointless. He was gone. The man you knew was gone and you had no clue what the fuck had happened.Â
He managed to finally find the infirmary, lucky enough that a few bags of Rad-Away had been left behind. Theyâd only had IV bags, so heâd spent a while trying to find a spot where his skin wasnât so tough a needle could actually get through.Â
She had to be lying.Â
He felt himself trying to look at the door, like sheâd step through, and forced his head down. He flicked at the IV bag, hoping that maybe it would speed it the fuck up. He needed to get out of here. The longer he stayed, the more he wanted to talk to her.Â
Heâd changed a lot since theyâd last seen each other. Whatever he had once felt for her was gone. The man he had once been was dead. There was no point in hurting the girl by giving her false hope. He sighed and leaned back against the wall, closing his eyes and trying to relax some.Â
Heâd finish this bag, pack the others, and then heâd leave this vault behind. She could figure out what she wanted to do on her own. He didnât have time for strays or old flames.Â
You stumbled around for a while before you finally got your bearings. You managed to make your way into what looked like an office and sat behind a curved desk. A terminal on top sat blinking bright green letters at you. You went through each of the logs, your dread only getting worse the longer you read.Â
Tom wasnât in this vault, thatâs for sure. The other names you only recognized from the credits of some movies youâd watched a while back. The men who had taken you from Tomâs house.Â
According to the scientist using this terminal, theyâd wanted to ensure they had some fun before they went underground.Â
You werenât the only one Tom had sold out. Your entire cryogenic chamber had been filled with other women, each of them dead because of a life support failure. You were meant to be their entertainment while they waited for the world to be ready for the taking.Â
You took a break, forcing your eyes away from the screen and staring down at your hands.Â
Well, Cooper hadnât been lying at least. Two hundred years youâd been frozen, you hadnât even known it. It was bizarre, what felt like only a few hours ago was over two millennia. Youâd only just kissed Cooper goodbye and now he was acting like some asshole who wouldnât even stay to help you to your feet.Â
Feeling yourself getting angry and panicked you went back to reading. There was nothing you could do. Youâd been screwed over by someone you trusted, you were stuck here. No point in pouting about it.Â
The scientist wrote more about the menâs intentions and you forced the bile down as you read. Then he got to what Vault-Tecâs real intentions were. Something about experimenting with cryogenics, seeing how long a body could last, what all it could preserve. You didnât understand most of it, the language far above your education.Â
The men were just guinea pigs, same as you. It brought you a modicum of satisfaction. Barely, though.Â
The lead of the whole project gets more cryptic and paranoid the further he writes. Something about Vault-Tec never sending the all clear signal to get the fuck out of here. Security was getting antsy the longer they stayed and supplies were running low.Â
It didnât take a genius to put two and two together when you looked at the blood splattered walls and the white coated corpse across the room. Â
Underneath the last entry was a fail safe. In case the experiment was going wrong and there were no other options but to abandon it.Â
TERMINATE?
The green pointer blinked as you stared at the question. Your mind traveled to the way theyâd swarmed you. How ruthlessly theyâd taken you like you were nothing more than cattle. The other women they did it to. You could only imagine what had happened while youâd been knocked out.Â
That familiar feeling of anger, disgust, and shame welled up in you. You had always been typecast. The sexy bombshell with nothing else going for her. It bled into other aspects of your life, people treating you like you were nothing more than a walking doll, for their enjoyment and nothing else.Â
Youâd be damned if you let these men survive what the other women couldnât.Â
You hit the button and listened as the sirens quieted down the hall, the hiss of oxygen as the pods killed their inhabitants. You didnât allow yourself to linger on what youâd just done for very long, you went clicking through the rest of the terminal.Â
Most of it was password locked, you only gleamed enough information to figure out what had been going on while you slept. Bombs dropped, the world went to shit, just like you always thought it would. Youâd never considered that you might survive it.Â
Maybe those men had done you a slight favor, just barely.Â
He sighed as he ripped the needle out of his arm, pulling his sleeve down he moved away from the wall heâd been leaning on. Heâd definitely been getting cheated out of his caps. Next time he saw that bitch Ma June, heâd show her what he thought about her watered down bullshit.Â
A shadow passed by the doorway and his hand drifted down to his holster. He slipped out of the room and took a peek around the corner. She had her back to him, but heâd recognize her anywhere, even with that ridiculous vault suit on.Â
âHey!â
She jumped and whirled around on him. For a moment he forgot that this was a completely new reality for her. She didnât know what a ghoul was, sheâd never seen one before. Her last memory of him had been his prime. When heâd had a fucking nose.Â
Her eyes widened and his grew cold while he waited for the inevitable disgust. He was used to it by now, but he was pretty sick and tired of hearing about it. Especially when the few people who managed to get their hands on his old movies would recognize him.Â
The disgust never came, just obvious shock and disbelief. She took a few hesitant steps closer, her eyes darting across his face while she did. He nearly missed her hand coming up, like she wanted to touch him. He caught it at the last second, bringing his hand up to swat hers down.Â
She winced and backed up a step, the wonder on her face gone and replaced with hurt. âCooper-â
He darted forward and snatched her chin in between his gloved fingers. âNow, darling, Iâm gonna need you to get this through your fucking head,â he hissed, eyes boring into her terrified ones. âThatâs not my name anymore, Iâm nothing but a ghoul. Iâm not the man you know and Iâm never going to be. Let it go and if you know whatâs good for you, move the fuck on.â
He could see the tears welling up in her eyes and grinned, she had always been pretty when she cried. âUnderstand?â When she didnât respond fast enough for his liking he shook her roughly, âSpeak!â
âYes,â she shouted, clawing at his arm and wincing when her nails scraped across the leather of his skin. âI understand.â He took a moment, looking into her eyes, before he nodded and released her.Â
She stumbled back, choking on a sob and glaring up at him. âSo, what? Am I just supposed to call you an asshole?â He scoffed, barely laughing. Everything that happened to her today and she could still get a fucking attitude. It was nearly impressive, if not stupid. She didnât watch who she spoke to and she was going to get killed before the day was up.Â
âYouâre not gonna call me anything. Weâre not working together, youâre on your own.â
She glared at him and rubbed her jaw where heâd grabbed her. Her cheeks were already changing colors, bruises blooming where heâd snatched her. His eyes darted away from her hands and back to her. âWhyâd you stop me then?â
He looked her up and down and grinned at the way she shivered, seemed he hadnât lost all his charm just yet. âThat tight little suit of yours is gonna get you killed. People up there donât take too kindly to people from down here.â
She rolled her eyes and crossed her arms, glaring at him. âSo, what? Iâd be safer walking around in what they had me in?â
He shook his head and started walking back towards the door of the vault. âNo.â
He heard her huff and race after him. âYouâre fucking infuriating, you know that? What the hell am I supposed to do, Co-â He shot her a warning glare but sheâd clamped her mouth shut before she could finish the sentence. She still had that stupid hurt look on her face, like heâd kicked her puppy. It kind of made him want to just shoot her.Â
âI donât have any supplies, all I have is this stupid suit. Please, I donât know what Iâm supposed to do.â
He sighed and stopped. She stumbled forward, nearly ramming into his back in the process. âGo to Filly, Iâm sure youâll find something there.â
âIâm supposed to just know where that is?â
He didnât bother responding to her, there was no point in it. She would be dead soon, anyway. This world wasnât made for pretty girls like her, especially not on her own. If she was smart sheâd just starve herself down here, at least sheâd have running water.Â
You watched him walk off and felt like your chest was going to cave in. You couldnât handle this, he was just Cooper an hour ago. Making you breakfast and kissing you goodbye. And despite the odd deformities, you could still see him. Sure, he was missing a nose, but he was still there. Your Cooper.Â
Except he wasnât.Â
You couldnât quite believe he would be so cruel earlier. He was always mean when he was hurt. You figured maybe he was still sitting with the fact that you hadnât actually left him behind for Vault-Tec. But his eyes gave him away.Â
They were cold, devoid of anything you used to know. The man you had known was no longer there. And if he was, he was buried far deeper than you were interested in digging. You watched him walk away and felt your chest squeezing painfully.Â
This was not the fucking time to start panicking. If the carnage around you was anything to go by, then the surface had to be so much fucking worse. Cooper seemed to think vaults were safer, but right now you were staring into the gouged eyes of a corpse whoâd been killed by a friend. Clearly, nowhere was safe.Â
You couldnât afford to pity yourself or cry. Youâd have to keep moving, process it all later. You pushed off the wall and leapt over the corpses blocking your path. Cooper mustâve stepped in a pile of blood because you could clearly make out his footprints. He seemed like he was going to leave, you bet if you followed him you would find the way out.Â
You followed the prints up a set of stairs, but they had faded out completely by the time you got up to the vault door. You winced, blocking your eyes from the bright glare of the sun. Barely a second out of the vault and you felt like your skin might already be peeling.Â
Whatever had happened while you were out, this was not the world you remembered. The sun seemed bigger, brighter, more violent. If the skeletons littered throughout the sand were anything to go by, everything was more violent now.Â
You tripped over a particularly deformed skull of a beast and scrambled up to your feet. You glanced around, spotting a figure in the distance and ran after it. You hoped it was Cooper you were following, but he was already so far ahead of you that he was barely a dot on the horizon.Â
You followed the footsteps he left in the sand and prayed he didnât notice you trailing him. You couldnât very well stay down there with all of those corpses. There had been no supplies to protect yourself with except a bloodied scalpel. You wouldnât make it down there on your own and you certainly wouldnât make it up here.Â
You planned to just follow Cooper until you found something resembling civilization. He didnât want you around him and you got the message, youâre not exactly eager to share his company. Heâs a stranger, the only part of him you recognize is his name, and youâre not even allowed to use that.Â
You kept your distance as long as you could. Keeping him as far away as possible so if he turned around he wouldnât be able to realize he was being followed. But youâre already struggling. Heâs not showing any signs of slowing anytime soon and you can barely see anymore.Â
Your lips are peeling, throat raw and aching for water. Your eyes are completely coated in sand and being damaged by the sun. You wished you had been better prepared for this but itâs been at least four hours and youâre about to keel over.Â
You wheeze, dragging yourself over to a fallen billboard and slumping against it. Youâre not paying enough attention to your surroundings, or you just donât care anymore. You find yourself drifting off and you donât stop it. Youâd prefer if the heat stroke took you while you were asleep, at least then you wouldnât be aware of it.Â
Your eyes drift closed and your head slumps forward, the sun bearing down on your neck and burning away at the skin there.Â
You cough and splutter, frantically brushing sand off your face and spitting it out of your mouth. Cooperâs standing over you, frowning and glaring, which seems to be his go to expression now. You glance down at his outstretched foot and realize he kicked the sand in your face. âWhat the fuck?â
âYou know,â he tilts his head and rests a hand on his holster, grinning at the way you shrink away from his gun. âI thought you would have lasted at least another hour.â
You wipe your face off and struggle back onto your feet, nearly teetering over as you did. âYou knew I was following you?â You groused, glaring up at him. Youâre not sure your anger translates well, though. You can barely hear your own voice, your throat too dry to produce any proper words. Â
ââCourse I did, sweetheart. Iâd be a pretty shit bounty hunter if I didnât recognize when someone was trailing me.â
You finally manage to get to your feet and glare at him. âCongratulations, you want a prize?â
His smile drops and he darts forward before you can move away. His hand clamps around your arm and he drags you behind him. Youâre stumbling, barely able to keep in stride with him. Mercifully, you notice the sky is starting to turn pink in the distance. Soon, the sun will be down and youâll get a moment's reprieve.Â
âWhere are you taking me?â You demand, tripping over a rock and wincing as he jerks you back to your feet. He turns around to glare at you like he isnât the one dragging you around.Â
âFilly,â he grunts. He finally comes to a stop, you ram into his back wincing as your nose slams into him painfully. He doesnât even flinch and you wonder if he felt it. If he can feel anything with how crisped his skin is.Â
âI thought you werenât going to help me.â Maybe you shouldnât be pushing your luck. If he is helping you, and thatâs a pretty hesitant if, youâre sure heâll be quick to change his mind. Still, you canât help but push him. Youâve always had that problem, except before he took it in stride and teased you right back.Â
Now, your eyes dart down to his gun, youâre not sure he wouldnât just put a new hole in you.Â
âChanged my mind.â
You huffed and rolled your eyes, âYeah, Iâm aware. Iâm asking why,â you cut yourself off sharply, mouth clamping shut because you almost called him Coop again. Your jaw is still aching from the last âwarningâ he gave you. Youâre not looking for another.Â
He whirled around on you and you didnât even realize his gun was in his hand until it was digging into your throat. âWhy donât you stop asking me so many fucking questions, hm.â He sneered and you winced at the sight of his yellowed teeth. Finally you nodded and backed away from him, he kept his eyes on yours for a moment before he holstered his gun again. âLetâs go,â he started walking and you couldnât do anything but follow him.Â
At least this time you werenât trying to track a dot in the distance.Â
The sky was getting dark quick and the temperature was dropping even faster. You hunched into yourself and ran your hands up and down your arms to try and keep warm. It seemed everything was done in the extremes now, even the damn weather.Â
Cooper whistled and you hurried to catch up with him. He stood in front of a decaying old house, nearly all of the roof gone. The walls looked like they might cave in soon and it had clearly been unoccupied for a very long time. He opened up the door and walked inside, letting it slam back into your face.Â
You caught it and huffed. You followed after him and saw that he was already setting up his spot for the night. He leaned against the half-rotted couch, his hat over his eyes and his arms tucked under his coat. You glanced around for a clean spot to curl up and laid down on the ground. You winced at all the dirt on the floor but figured it was better than sleeping out in the sand.Â
Despite your oh-so comfortable sleeping arrangement, you found it hard to pass out. Maybe itâs because youâd just taken a two hundred year nap or the man across from you. Your eyes refused to stay shut and you couldnât stop staring at him.Â
You told yourself you would process your emotions later but apparently your mind had decided now would be the best time. You could feel the tears trickling down your cheeks again and you tried to wipe them away.
Too much had happened for them to be so easily dismissed. You were struggling with the thoughts of what those men did to you. Youâre certain your imagination is worse than anything that happened, but not knowing was killing you. You felt violated, just being knocked out like that and being left vulnerable to them.Â
And Cooper.Â
Cooper was practically dead as far as you both were concerned. You felt like you were grieving for someone who was lying right across from you. You were staring right at him and he was just out of your reach.Â
You sniffled and wiped your nose. A loud sigh came from the man in front of you and he spoke without bothering to tilt his hat back up. âIâm gonna take you to Filly and youâre gonna help me with some business there and then weâll go our separate ways.â
âWhat?â Your voice was an embarrassing croak and you winced.Â
âThey donât take too kindly to my folk down there-â
âYou mean zombies,â you interrupted, propping your head up on your hand.Â
He finally lifted his hat up and glared, though it was half-hearted at best. âItâs âghouls,â sweetheart. Never knew you to be racist.â You rolled your eyes and he dropped his hat back down again. âYouâll get me what I need and Iâll have delivered you to, well, not safety, but as close as you can get out here.â He leaned forward, arm outstretched and grinning at you. âDeal?â
Well, it wasn't like you had any other options. You leaned forward, grasping his gloved hand in yours and shaking, âDeal.â

I feel like I have to get over this mindset of I need likes. Aside from my Fallout stuff, the majority of what I write is for smaller fandoms. I feel like I'm getting in my own head and ruining my love for writing by basing my writings worth off of how many likes and how much attention I'm getting.
Hey Iâm just begging for a fic of Logan with a shy reader that she has a crush on him but thinks heâs never going to fix on her since Jean exists (maybe the reader can make her hair color change depending on the emotion or something

Logan Howlett x X-men!reader (Chameleon)
âChameleon!â You jump, shoulders flying up to your ears. Almost immediately you can feel the tips of your fingers tingling. Sure enough, when you look down theyâre already disappearing. Sighing, you turn around and glare at Scott.Â
âWhat have I told you about scaring me?âÂ
He grimaces, raising his hands in surrender. âSorry, I forgot.â
You roll your eyes and turn back toward your project. âEvery time,â you mutter bitterly. Youâre not an idiot. You know he thinks scaring you is funny. The whole school does. They all like to see you yelp and blend in with the nearest surface, the only thing visible is your stupid hair.Â
âYouâre, um, turning red.â Scott points to your head and you donât have to look to know your hair is shifting colors.
You reach over and swat harshly at his arm, âBecause you pissed me off! I know you scare me on purpose,â you accuse, jabbing your finger into his chest. He laughs and stumbles away from you.Â
âAlright, alright, calm down. I was just messing around a little. Look,â he glances down at the lesson plans before you and sighs. âAll this will have to wait. Charles needs us all for a mission.â
You huff and shove the papers into your desk drawer. âAlright, lead the way.â You feel Scottâs eyes still lingering on your hair and glare at him. âMove it, Summers,â you demand.Â
You were already in a bad mood, you didnât need him making it worse. It honestly shouldnât be such a big deal for you. You get scared by everyone all the time. You used to enjoy it, enjoyed the way it felt like you all had your own joke. But, eventually, it started to feel less like an inside joke and more like youâre the unwitting butt of one.Â
Some mutants get amazing powers, like Jean or Charles. Loganâs abilities are incredible, even if he doesnât believe you when you tell him that. But yours, well, you're better suited as the cheap gimmick of a childrenâs birthday party than an X-Men. Youâre just a walking mood ring that blends in with her environment.Â
The only thing youâre good for is reconnaissance missions and embarrassing yourself. You donât know what Charles sees in you. Youâve never understood why he insists youâre such a good asset to the team. Yes, you are good at spying on people, but you donât need to when Charles has such strong telepathic abilities. Youâre essentially useless in a fight due to a lack of regenerative or strength abilities.Â
More often than not you feel like a child playing dress up, chasing after the big kids. You know the others donât mean anything bad by it when they tease you into going invisible or laugh when your hair changes. Itâs all in good fun. But it doesnât make you feel any less like easy entertainment rather than a teammate.Â
It doesnât help that youâve got little to no control over your abilities when it comes to Logan. Youâve never had such a horrifically bad crush like this. Anytime he opens his mouth around you, you're fighting off the urge to just go invisible and run away. You feel like you go feral around him. You donât know how he hasnât caught onto what the colors of your hair mean when youâre near him.Â
Itâs constantly switching between some odd mix of red and pink when you talk. Which, you know what it means, but youâre praying no one else does. Red can mean angry, depending on whether youâre talking to Scott or not. You know, though, that with Logan it just means you want to jump his bones and youâre hopelessly in love with him.Â
Thankfully, like the others, he associates red with anger. Which isnât great for you because that just means he thinks every time he opens his mouth youâre pissed off. At yourself, maybe, but at him, never. It just means when he wears those stupid tanktops you want to dig your teeth into his biceps and never let go.Â
Scott opens the door to the meeting room and you slide in past him. Charles gives you a brief smile as a greeting. You take the chair at the end of the table, which just happens to be next to Logan - completely coincidental. He gives you a tense smile and you return it stiffly. You tug your hood over your hair, praying he doesnât notice the red in your strands yet. You donât want him to think you hate him. You completely prefer that over him knowing how feral you are for him, but itâs not conducive to your slow plan to finally get him to acknowledge you as a sexual partner.Â
You swear, if your name isnât Jean Grey, you might as well just be a shapeless blob of nothing. He glances over at her, that smoldering look in his eyes, and you try not to throw up in your mouth. Scott wraps an arm around Jeanâs shoulders and they break their lingering stares.Â
Logan glances over at you and catches the glare on your face before you can get rid of it. He huffs and turns towards Charles. With a sigh, you sink back into your chair and focus on not just going invisible.Â
âChameleon,â Charles says your name and your eyes widen. You wonder how much youâve missed while youâve been glaring at the back of Jeanâs head. âDoes that sound alright with you?â
You look around the table for help but theyâre all staring expectantly at you. âSure,â you stumble over the word, racking your brain for any answers. It seems not even your subconscious was paying attention to Charles droning on. âSounds great.â He gives you a satisfied nod.Â
âGood. Off to the jet, all of you.â he rolls out of the room and you wait until heâs out of earshot to kick Logan under the table.Â
He glances back at you, smirking. âDonât know what you agreed to?â
You purse your lips and shake your head. âNope,â he gives you a look like he knew youâd say that. You hate how well he can read you when it feels like youâre constantly hitting walls trying to understand him.Â
âYouâre scoping a place out for us. Making sure itâs safe so we can retrieve some information.â You give him a thankful look and he chuckles. âYou need to start paying attention, kid.â
You groan and get up from your chair, brushing past him. âI told you to quit calling me that.â It makes you feel like thatâs all heâll ever see you as, some kid invited onto the team. You want him to see you as someone he could have sex with, hopefully, love one day.Â
He glances past you at Jean. She smiles at him and you fight everything inside you to not roll your eyes and gag at them. Sheâs holding onto Scott and making fuck me eyes at Logan, which heâs happily returning. This is just too disgusting for you.Â
You shove past him and ignore how he calls out your name. Your real name. Heâs the only one that uses it. For some reason, most people just refer to you by Chameleon. You donât understand why. They just donât seem to think of you outside your abilities as a mutant.Â
You make it to the jet before the others, taking the private time to change into your X-Men suit. If thereâs one useful thing about your ability, itâs that it affects whateverâs touching you. Which means, you donât have to strip naked to go completely invisible. And if anyone is around you, all you have to do is hold onto them and theyâll blend in too.Â
Youâre tugging up the zipper of your top as Logan walks in. He gives you an odd look, sitting on the bench in front of you. âAngry about something?â He asks, gaze darting up to your head.Â
You drag your fingers over the ends of your hair and sigh. âNo,â you tell him bluntly, taking the seat beside him.Â
His brows furrow in confusion. âItâs red, though,â he points out, his tone colored in suspicion.Â
You laugh a little, âRed doesnât always mean angry.â Itâs the most youâve ever confided about your hair colors to him. The largest hint youâve ever given him that you donât hate him. Youâre worried if he knew how you really felt about him, heâd think you were a little creep.Â
He slides his arm behind you on the bench, leaning in until youâre practically sharing the same air. You know your eyes are comically large, you donât even want to know what color your hair is turning right now. âWhat else does it mean, kid?â He whispers and you donât even pay attention to the nickname. All you can see and hear right now is him. How close he is, how close your lips are.Â
You could lean forward an inch or two and youâd be kissing. âUm,â you swallow harshly around the lump in your throat. You donât even know what he asked you, all you can think about now is kissing him.Â
âLogan!â Ororoâs voice echoes through the jet and you leap away from him, trying to calm your racing heart. Logan sighs and leans back in his seat, giving Storm a tense smile. She glances at you and laughs, âSheâs nearly see-through, what are you doing to her?â
You frown and look down at your hands. Sure enough, youâre going translucent. You let out a silent groan, and tuck your knees into your chest. You take a few deep breaths until youâre one solid form again. Itâs so embarrassing when that happens, when you lose control over yourself like that.Â
But itâs even worse when Logan does it to you. He gives you hope, stupid, hateful hope, for one minute that he might feel something deeper. Only for it to be another joke. Youâre a walking mood ring, nothing more than a quick laugh to all of them.Â
Jean walks up the ramp, her gaze going to Logan first before drifting towards you. âAre you alright?â She mutters, trying not to let the others hear. Of course, Logan can, with his stupid enhanced abilities. âYouâre turning blue,â she points out and you roll your eyes.Â
You can feel Loganâs stare burning holes into the side of your head and it only makes you feel worse. You hate being a joke, but you also hate showing them just how much it affects you. You donât want to seem like a crybaby that canât handle a little teasing. But youâd thought coming to Charlesâ school meant people would stop poking fun at you. It feels like being dragged right back into high school.Â
âIâm fine,â you tell her. She doesnât look like she believes you but she takes a seat anyway. Of course, placing herself right next to Logan, even though her fiancee is a few feet away from her, looking just as hurt as you. They lean into each other and whisper. Theyâre not even trying to hide it anymore. You let your glare bore into the floor, ignoring how much seeing them together hurts.Â
The mission had gone well, Logan had been hoping to go to the bar and grab a drink with you. But the second his back is towards you, youâre running off the jet. Logan calls out your name, trying to catch up. You glance back at him, looking like a deer caught in the headlights. He smiles at you and your eyes widen. You go invisible and Logan glances around, baffled.Â
He calls out your name again but the door ahead of him opens and closes quickly. He can only assume youâve run away again. You always run away from him. Youâre always pissed off at him. He doesnât know what Jeanâs talking about when she says you like him.Â
Loganâs never met anyone more repulsed by him.Â
âWould you just trust me?â Jean tells him lowly, creeping up behind him.Â
His face falls and he turns to her, glaring at her knowing smirk. âShe just fuckinâ ran away from me. Pretty sure thatâs about as good a hint as Iâm gonna get, Jean.â
She glances over her shoulder, waving Scott away and looping her arm through Loganâs. âYouâre an idiot, Howlett.â He scoffs and she swats at his shoulder. âTrust me, I can read minds, remember?â
Of course, he knows sheâs got some pretty decent telepathic abilities. But he didnât think she would so brazenly breach your boundaries. Thereâs an unspoken rule that the mind readers of the school donât delve into your brain without permission.Â
She sees the look on his face and sighs. âI didnât read her mind. She got drunk a little while ago and told me about her raging crush on you,â she laughs a little at your expense and Logan lets out a short chuckle. You can be a pretty sloppy drunk if they let you go too far. He figures it was one of those girlâs nights he wants nothing to do with. Youâd probably let the tight reigns you keep on yourself slip for once.Â
âShe goes red every time she sees me. I donât know what else that could mean other than she hates me.â Logan isnât surprised that youâre not taken with him like he is with you. Heâs used to the rejection, but it hurts just a bit more coming from you. Youâre so welcoming to the others.Â
You embrace every new member of the school with open arms. Yet, with him, you get angry whenever you see him. You see through his walls, see the rot lurking underneath them. And, rightfully, want nothing to do with him. He understands your reasoning.Â
Most days he barely wants anything to do with himself. Heâs made a lot of bad choices in his life, half of which he canât remember. But heâd hoped, for one minute, that you might give him a second chance. As much as Jean insists otherwise, he can see the truth of how you feel about him every time you run away.Â
âRed doesnât always mean anger,â Jean tells him elusively. Itâs the same thing youâd said to him on the jet. It makes his brows furrow in confusion and he glares at her.Â
âWhat else could it mean?â He demands sharply, sick of her teasing him with the possibility you might feel the same way.Â
She bites her lip, looking suddenly sheepish. âI canât say-â
âJean,â Logan snaps. He stops her from walking any further, keeping her planted in one spot with him. âTell me,â heâs sick of the games youâre both playing with him. He just wants some straight fucking answers. How hard is that?
She sighs and looks away from him. âI promised her I wouldnât tell.â
âAnd Iâm sure you promised you also wouldnât tell me how she feels about me,â he points out. Thereâs a sharp tone to his voice, itâs rude but he canât bother feeling guilty about it.Â
She canât meet his eye, a smirk fighting at the corner of her lips. He waits impatiently for her answer, irritation broiling quickly in his gut. Heâs about to snap at her again when she finally meets his eyes.Â
She speaks through a laugh, like what sheâs about to say is so ridiculous she canât hold it in. âShe wants,â she cuts herself off with another laugh and Logan groans in frustration. He begins to walk away from her when she yells, âShe wants to fuck you!â At his back.Â
His eyes widen in surprise before he turns back to her with a displeased look. âAre you fuckinâ with me?â He demands, narrowing his eyes at her suspiciously.Â
She shakes her head and brushes past him. âYou didnât hear it from me,â she warns, tone grave as she leaves the room.Â
Logan is left standing in the same spot, stunned at the revelation. Heâs not sure how much of that he believes. But he doesnât understand why Jean would possibly lie to him about this. She gains nothing by setting him up for failure. As much as he doubts the honesty behind her words, heâs got no other choice but to trust them.Â
He heads to the most likely place youâre hiding out. Charles has a private library thatâs blocked off from the kids. There are too many first editions in there, he canât risk any of them accidentally blowing them up. You like to head there when youâre trying to avoid people.Â
He tries to stay quiet as he walks in, not wanting you to run off again. Itâs hard to confront someone who goes invisible whenever she feels like it. He sees light blue hair draped over the back of an armchair. He feels like a creep as he stalks towards you, sneaking and pouncing on you so you canât run away.Â
He canât imagine how Jean ever thought him approaching you would be a good idea. He whispers your name, trying not to startle you. It doesnât take a genius to see how much you hate when the others scare you. They might not mean anything bad by it, but they have to be blind not to see how much it pisses you off.Â
You still jump, glancing up at him with a surprised look. He looks to your hair for any tells of how you feel. Some pink weaves its way through the stands but it otherwise stays relatively blue. His brows furrow in confusion, he canât tell if itâs a good or bad sign that thereâs no red.Â
âHow are ya, kid? Ran off pretty quick earlier.âÂ
âDonât call me that,â you mutter, giving him a brief glare before staring absently down at the book in your hands. Logan kneels beside your armchair, covering the pages with his hand. You huff, giving him an expectant look. âYes, Logan?â You demand, tone short.
Logan tilts his head, examining you and your body language. You seem relatively closed off, irritated at him or something else. He doesnât know what to say. Heâs never been good with words or trying to express how he feels. Heâs more comfortable showing how much he cares for those around him.Â
Throwing caution to the wind, he lets his hand drift to your wrist and tugs you forward. Your eyes widen as he drags you toward him. The kiss is short, he doesnât want to push you too much. But it takes everything in him to stop himself from deepening it. All he wants is to pull you into his arms and devour you.Â
He holds back, parting from you with a low exhale. Your eyes flutter open and he grins when he sees the bright red your hair has turned. âWhat,â you sputter and stumble over your words. You shove him back and leap to your feet. âWhat the hell was that?â You demand, voice higher than heâs ever heard of it. âWhat was that?â You ask him shrilly, again.Â
You almost seem to be stuck in a loop, blinking rapidly and asking the same thing. Logan chuckles and gets to his feet, he gives you a knowing look and you narrow your eyes at him in disbelief.Â
âJean told me.â
Your brows furrow and you shake your head. Realization dawns on your face and you gasp, looking up at him with something like horror on your expression. âNo,â you tell him lowly. âShe didnât,â it almost sounds like youâre begging him to tell you otherwise.Â
He laughs again and your face falls. You start going clear, he can see the bookshelf through your stomach and he sighs. He grabs your hand, holding onto you before you can run again. You donât even seem to be aware that youâre slowly disappearing from view.Â
âSheâs, uh,â he struggles to figure out what to say to make you feel better. âSheâs been coaching me,â he admits shamefully. âTrying to help me talk to you.â
You glance up at him but he can barely see your expression. The only thing reassuring him youâre here is his grip on you and your voice. âWhat? But I thought that-â You cut yourself off quickly and Logan glares down at where he thinks your face is.Â
âThought what?â
You take a long pause and exhale deeply. âI thought,â you mutter, âyou liked her.â
âSheâs with Scott,â he points out bluntly. He can practically hear you roll your eyes, even if he canât see it.Â
âYeah, I know. But you guys are always whispering to each other and making googly eyes.â
âGoogly eyes?â He interrupts, disgust clear in his tone.Â
âI was wrong,â you continue, ignoring him. âI see that now, but I thought you didnât care about me.â
Logan huffs, he hates that you thought that. He should have just been open with you from the start. Heâs faced rejection his whole life, he shouldnât have been so petrified of it just because it could come from you. If heâd just manned up and told you earlier, it would have saved you both a lot of time and hurt.Â
âKid,â he hopes heâs making eye contact with you and not just staring at some random book. Itâs really hard to tell when you go invisible like this. âYouâre the only person I care about in here.â
Youâre quiet for a long while and he worries youâve somehow slipped away without him realizing. But, ever so slowly, you start coming back into view. Logan awkwardly averts his eyes from your breasts, heâd been hoping he was making eye contact with you, clearly, he was wrong.Â
âYou mean that?â You ask, and he hates the trepidation in your voice. Heâs never been good with words, he doesnât know how to tell you how much you mean to him. But he can show you.Â
His hand drifts up your arm, wrapping around the back of your neck and tugging you towards him. You trip over your feet, hands landing on his chest to stabilize yourself. He leans down, hovering over your lips for a moment. He waits until your eyes drift shut and your lips purse impatiently before he finally kisses you again.Â
He doesnât hold himself back this time. He pours every racing thought heâs ever had about you, every one of his wanted-to-tell-you-how-he-feels-and-hasnât moments into the kiss. Your hands slowly curl up into his shirt, wrinkling it and tugging him further into you.Â
To his surprise, you deepen the kiss, mouth moving over his like you want to devour him whole. Heâs sure if he opened his eyes your hair would be a bright roaring red. He smirks against your lips, happy that, for once, he actually listened to Jean. If it gets him results like this, he might have to do it more often.Â

A/N: Roses symbolize forgiveness.Â
I started this story because I thought, if I actually want to start sharing my writing maybe I should start by writing something I donât really care about. A throwaway story, so if people donât like it, it wonât hurt me. Ten chapters later and 43.8k (and then some) words later, here we are. I love these characters, and its actually insane how the story developed. It felt like they were telling it through me, that it was the detective and Connor writing not me. I get what fanfiction writers mean now when they say it's hard to keep âY/Nâ a blank slate, itâs nearly impossible to stop a unique personality from growing.Â
Thanks for making it this far, and thanks for taking care of them.Â
âWeâve got to get you something other than flowers.â
âI have clothes.â
You groaned in exasperation. âYeah! Hankâs clothes, because you refuse to let me buy you any, for some weird reason.â
Connor gave you a deadpan expression, âI like my flowers.âÂ
You waved him off, âI know, but I want you to be able to put your own touch on the place Connor. I donât feel like you live here, I feel like youâre couch surfing.â Connor stood up from the couch and wrapped his arms around you, pulling you into his embrace.Â
âIâm still figuring out what âmy touchâ is, Y/N, just be patient with me.â You pulled away and frowned.
âI donât mean to make you feel bad, Connor. I just want you to feel like this is home.â
Connor smiled and leaned down, pressing a quick kiss against your lips. He pulled back quickly, knowing it was too easy for the both of you to get swept up in your love. Hank would be coming over with Sumo and Carla for dinner soon, he didnât need him walking in on you two again. The last couple of times were so embarrassing for you, you hadnât let Connor touch you for a whole week.Â
He rubbed his thumb across your cheek, he could never grow tired of staring into your eyes. âYou are my home, anywhere you are, is home to me. I donât need a bunch of stuffed animals or knick knacks to know that.â He smiled, âYou were my home before I even knew what that meant.âÂ
Tears lined your eyes and you let your head fall into his neck, âThis mascara is really expensive, do not make me cry.â He laughed and squeezed you tighter.Â
âCome on, theyâll be here soon. We should set the table.â You nodded and managed to steal one last kiss before you went off to go set the table.Â
Connor looked out the kitchen window, out towards the garden.Â
He had ripped out all the weeds, repainted the fence and planted each of the flowers.Â
A warm feeling filled him as he stared at his favorite, a lone black dahlia surrounded by roses.Â
âConnor,â he turned towards you. Hank had arrived while he was staring out at the garden. Carla behind him, holding Sumoâs leash. You were all waiting for him. He left the dahlia behind and made his way towards you.Â
Towards his family.
Towards home.Â
