Underrated JayVik moments/lines (11/∞)

...as opposed to the outside, where you'd normally expect to see the jewel of a wristband like this. It's a simple fact that still carries so much weight:

Of course, one thing it signifies is simply how it's not for show, not an adornment, but instead something deeply personal to Jayce.

Beyond that, however, there is just something so symbolic about keeping a memento directly on top of your veins like this. Where you might feel for a pulse, or - you know - cut in order to end your life (Jayce's suicide attempt just so happens to be the only time he takes it off, too - he doesn't even take it off during sex).

And while it's not something I noticed consciously for the longest time, everytime Jayce rubs his thumb over the crystal, as he so often does... he is inadvertently also baring his wrist and tracing his lifeblood; his heart, his "whole life".

Jayce is quite literally carrying the stone, the beauty and the dreams it represents cased in gold and close to his heart.

And I don't know about you, but I can just never get over how - even though he won't know it for many years - what this gem really is at the end of the day, is the bond Jayce shares with Viktor across time and space made manifest. Given to him by Viktor in order to set them on their path to each other.

At which point, when Jayce does find out, it is then fully embedded into his body and his very essence; to be - at long last - dug out of his veins, gifted to and shared with his own Viktor during their final moments.

I don't know, man... the layers of symbolism with these two sometimes actually makes it more difficult to write these posts because there is just so much to consider. For instance, in this topic alone we have:

The crystal representing the mage who saved him,

who is also Viktor,

but also representing Jayce's dreams of bringing the magic that the mage i.e. Viktor brought to his life to the world,

those dreams being Jayce's "whole life"

and something of which he is immediately eager to share ownership with Viktor

after Viktor validated those dreams by returning the wristband to Jayce,

being the only other person to have held said wristband,

which in itself is again a symbol of their bond,

and -

You see the issue here? I feel like I can never truly get to the bottom of every facet I want to talk about in any of these posts (while still remaining coherent, that is).

Then again, I guess all that really means is that you are cordially invited to dig deeper if you wish to.

Viktor was always afraid of becoming like Rio and Orianna, neither living nor dead, kept in glass by someone who would not let him die because he was loved too much. Jayce basically did just that to him.

How has this parallel never occur to me before? Viktor walking away was completely understandable before but this, this is just so sad...

Viktor being an apprentice for Singed longer than Arcane shows us really makes parts of his character deliciously more painful.

Viktor allows augmentations to his body, but never replaces anything despite the advanced prosthetics we see.

-> because Singed replaced Orianna’s arms and legs, and Viktor feared becoming her.

Viktor never uses Shimmer until he is absolutely desperate, though we see he could have access to it in Piltover a la Salo (or just by going to Singed earlier).

-> Viktor knows Shimmer was supposed to be a medicine because he’s the adopted son of the man who made it. He watches Shimmer, something he might have even helped with in its earliest stages as a teenager, become a drug that ravages Zaun.

-> The first person he “heals” is a Shimmer addict.

Viktor leaves after Jayce rescued him with the Hexcore.

Singed convinces Ambessa to let him talk to Viktor. He notices Viktor is fading and offers his creature up to heal him. He doesn’t actually do it until Viktor lets him.

Meanwhike, Viktor knows where one of the worst villains of the Undercity is. The reason Shimmer is flooding the Lanes. Viktor has a Councilor best friend and ties to the Enforcers who could root him out. Yet he never breathes a word about his location.

-> Because there is a twisted sort of love between them, a toxic relationship filled with acid, but at its core is a true affection of a father for a son.

Underrated JayVik moments/lines (8/∞)

"I've come with Viktor; my partner and a Zaunite."

Finally the hypeman Viktor deserved.

Jokes aside, this line is one of the reasons I started making this series in the first place. Specifically the "Zaunite" part of it.

Why? Because not only has Jayce up until this point always referred to just "people from the Undercity"... I feel like he never even fully acknowledged that Viktor was one of them, either.

Or rather: that Zaun was still a part of Viktor.

Sure, Viktor essentially introduces himself to Jayce as a "cripple from the Undercity" and often enough states his wish to help the people there, but I believe this likely struck Jayce as gracious - same as it was for him - rather than personal.

After all, Viktor had successfully escaped the Undercity, right? He more than deserved his place in Piltover, right?

Jayce never thought less of Viktor for being a Zaunite, but that doesn't mean he respected his heritage. (The biggest indication of which, of course, being their infamous argument on the bridge. When Jayce says "They're dangerous!" he absolutely means it as a them, not a you.)

Yet here, he finally acknowledges and demonstrates respect for Viktor's heritage as a fully integral part of who he is - a boon, even, rather than a misfortune - and gives him the floor for this crucial moment of the proposal.

Speaking of: it's a pivotal gesture not only in terms of Jayce recognising Viktor as a Zaunite. I want to draw attention to this moment in episode 4 real quick:

(I LOVE how this is a perfect mirror image to the scene above.)

Here, Jayce is keeping Viktor from speaking even one word in front of the council. To protect him, to take full responsibility, to do the right thing... to do everything except take into consideration what Viktor might have even wanted to say.

He means well, of course he does - but it will take him until the season finale to realise that what marginalised people need is not for someone to protect them or govern them or speak for them.

It's for their voice to be heard.

In conclusion: not only is the scene as a whole the perfect culmination of Jayce's character arc in season 1, but this line in particular proves how it would have also served as the perfect starting point for a mended - and while more jaded, way stronger - JayVik bond if things hadn't gone south again immediately.

I know Viktor will later say "our paths diverged long ago", but even though that is true looking back from that particular moment in time, I've always loved how in reality, they did, just for one day, fully find their way back to each other in this season finale.

Moving another thread across to here and it is a Yohna one you lucky sausages. It is a long post, I'll apologise now.

Let's talk about this scene from the 2001 anime

Spoiler for main series and some elements of Flowers

This was a non manga scene added to the 2001 series. I honestly believe that this scene was added in replacement of the moment Anna asked to stay with Yoh the night before he lives for America.

I believe that the 2001 production team wanted to give Yoh and Anna a scene alone before he left for America. Something to show them acting like a couple. To show that actually they do care for each other. But it had to be done in the most Yoh and Anna way.

Now, Yoh and Anna are a very private couple. Everything happens behind closed doors. Yoh and Anna are not about big declarations of love or PDA. Be it Takei's choice to portray them like this, or his refusal to write full on romance we will not speak on it . So this scene had to be very 'them'.

I mean, I pray for the day we finally get some flashbacks of baby Hana in Middle East. I will not shut up about it. I just want to see them FIGHT TOGETHER. Or just working together as a team because I NEED IT. Just let them be a cute married couple please.

GIVE ME THE YOHNA SPIN OFF TAKEI! I KNOW ANNA IS ONE OF YOUR FAVS. STOP DENYING YOURSELF. BRING HER BACK.

Anyway, back to the scene.

The lead up to this scene is pretty interesting. During school, Manta picks up that Anna has been acting weird.

It amazed me that Yoh did not notice her acting a little off. But, to be fair to Yoh, he has been training very hard and is super tired. The gang had recently been to China to rescue Ren, so our boy must be pretty exhausted, and more than likely falling a sleep in classes.

But omg, he is so clueless. Please help this man.

I mean, either Yoh is so distracted with other stuff, or he doesn't think Anna would be affected by his departure. They lived so long apart back in Izumo so why would this be any different?

I believe that having now lived with each other, their relationship had changed and they are now closer. They act more like a couple. I'm pretty sure by now they have had their first kiss and spoke about their feelings for each other.

Please also offer some thoughts on clueless Yoh 🙏

That is until....

Manta outright tells the gang that he is sad that they will all be leaving.

Yoh, Horohoro and Ryu have been acting like it is nothing, and just a part of their lives. Ryu does tell Manta that they do feel sad but they are dealing with it in their own way.

I think this is where the realisation clicks in Yoh's head that actually, Anna could be feeling the same. That she is sad too, but showing it in her own way. Maybe she did want to spend time together that evening? But I don't think Anna would ever meaningfully get in the way of Yoh seeing his friends. She knows how important they are to Yoh.

Wanna take a walk with me?

Yoh might have been sitting on this idea since the meal out with the guys, and he waited till the last moment to ask Anna to go for a walk.

I think this shows how nervous Yoh is about exploring his feelings with Anna, because who goes out for a walk just before they go to bed? When they are already in their nightwear?

I think that, in the 2001 anime, the emotions are there, but they are teenagers figuring out their feelings for each other and how to express themselves. I'm a romantic, sorry

BUT LOOK AT THE BABIES!!!

Yoh is always a reassurance for Anna. She pushes him to become the best person he can become, and Yoh is always there to reassure and support Anna. They just work together so well. They are a team.

On their late night walk, they talk about normal stuff such as the Patch Village, the SK fight, Anna of course tells Yoh that he better not lose.

But I think there is more to be said about what they don't say, or hidden meanings.

This moment here

I tell you, I can hear the brain clogs ticking in that little Asakura head.

After seeing Anna is cold, Yoh presents her with a warm drink.

We know Anna is always ordering Yoh around, but she never asked him go and get her a drink. Is it one of the first times in the show we see Yoh just do something for Anna without her asking or ordering him to do so.

YOHNA BIG BRAIN THEORY MOMENT 🧠

I struggle to word this but I will try. I feel like Anna is trying to keep her true feelings unwraps (as usual), but this time she is doing it to Yoh.

Anna is cold and is seen as trying to keep herself warm. She doesn't ask for help. She doesn't tell Yoh that she is cold. It is her issue and she will deal with it on her own.

Now let's apply that to her emotions.

Anna has grown close to Yoh and is now sad that he is going to America. There is a chance that she might not see him again, but she just carries on as usual. She doesn't tell Yoh she is sad or express it. She knows Yoh has to focus, and it is his duty to progress in the Shaman Fights.

Yoh and Anna are often said to have an 'unspoken communication', and this was one of those turning points as a couple.

I feel like they became stronger after this. And look, I know the scene could be classed as non-cannon as it didn't happen in the manga but its here and I'm going to talk about it!

I don't know man. I love the addition of this scene in the 2001 version. Likely one of my favourites, along with a selection of others.
