Many modernizing adaptations of Sherlock Holmes give Holmes some form of addition or substance abuse to reflect his use of morphine and cocaine in the books. However, in ACD canon, Holmes’ use of drugs is basically only mentioned once as an aside, implying it doesn’t particularly impair his life, and seems to be form of self-medication for his overactive mind in between cases. Also, while morphine and cocaine are illegal today, they were legal in the Victorian Era and thus Holmes commits no crimes by using them.
