On The Second Viewing, I Realized That House Of Usher Is Also A Story About How Boomers Made A Deal With

On the second viewing, I realized that House of Usher is also a story about how Boomers made a deal with the devil - an easy life with the consequences to be paid by future generations. Gen X got to reap the most benefits from this deal - got to live longer and get more established and see where they were supposed to be able to get before they got cut off at the knees. Millennials got less - struggling to establish themselves in careers when the world is falling apart, ending up in weird digital jobs like streaming video games or throwing parties, retreating into nihilistic hedonism to deal with it. And Gen Z - poor Gen Z may not even get started, so many of them struck down before they can even really live by war and climate change and gun violence and disease. They're young enough and innocent enough to see what's wrong with the world but not powerful enough to fix it. And then the Boomers sit back and complain about how it's everyone else's fault - that they're all greedy and lazy and the cause of their own destruction - and refuse to hand over power when they should, choosing instead to collapse the entire house around them in their senility.

i think (while on the topic of taylor swift and criticism towards her), if we're to look a little closer to what makes taylor swift so successful, especially as someone who used to be an avid fan back in her early teens (i regret nothing), is her mediocrity. and i mean this in the nicest way possible: she's good, but not good enough to threaten an industry. she's outspoken, but only when it looks good on her. she's conveniently white, able-bodied and conventionally beautiful enough to claim all the privileges while sitting on a throne of female empowerment - without really doing anything to threaten the status quo or promote said empowerment.

because threatening the status quo would inevitably mean addressing her own power and how she, as a billionaire, benefits so greatly from white feminism. it's a parade of rainbows and confetti until she has to speak up. until she has to do something that might cause controversy, that might make her lose audience, fans, or $$$.

on the topic of her talents and all - it's the same thing. she has the kind of content that hits you strong enough for you to give her the credit for some quite good lyrics (re: all too well, the entirety of folklore and evermore), but it's all still digestible. it's palatable. it does not question, it doesn't bring any issues or topics we haven't seen before in art or music. it makes you feel, but it doesn't build anything up.

and dare i say, the people who are doing it, who are bringing some sort of revolution and/or a new perspective into music are the exact types of people she tends to have beef or an issue with. she cannot perceive any threats in the slightest, especially from other female artists. how many of them has she truly collaborated with in a way where she wasn't the main event? think about it. just think about it, for once.

I really, really hate how awful I am in regards to keeping in contact with others. I want healthy and fulfilling relationships with my friends, but it’s very hard for me to wholly invest myself. I want to talk to you, but it’s difficult for me to muster the energy to do so sometimes. I want to hang out with you, but isolation also sounds nice right now. I’ll read your texts, but I’m not necessarily in the mood to reply at the moment. Then I feel anxious attempting to reach out when I do have the energy and I am in a good mood because I feel like I pushed you away and you dislike me now, so I usually remain isolated. I feel selfish because of it. And I feel like a bad friend.

Gender discourse aside for one moment, am I the only one angered they made Francesca seem the bessoted one while meeting Michael/Michaela and not the other way around. That completely ruins her character. The entire point of the story is that Michael has been in love with Francesca for years knowing full well she would never, ever betray John, emotionally or otherwise. Ironically that's what Michael admires her for, he tells her so himself. That's what makes it tragic and beautiful.

the distortion of "there is potential profit we did not earn" as "there is money we lost" is fascinating and disgusting to me. "megamediaconglomerate lost $1,000,000,000 to piracy this year" is a flat out lie. it is not true. they did not have a billion dollars, that they now do not have. they felt entitled to one billion dollars, that they did not have, and still do not have. it's an infuriating perversion of the truth

the thing about the "um excuse me if you're as poor as you say you are why don't you just sell all your most treasured possessions" thing that people love to trot out as some kind of "gotcha" is that they do not acknowledge how fucking soul-crushing it is to be in a situation that is already destroying your mental health and then be forced to sell one of the few things in your life that still bring you joy

Women saying "He has a good sense of humour" means his jokes made me laugh.

Men saying "She has a good sense of humour" means she laughs at my jokes.

do not joke about the advertisements, do not engage with the advertisements in witty fashions, do not, fucking, mention the contents of the advertisements. as soon as an advertisement enters your mind, you kill it, dont care how cute it is, take it out back and shoot it. install adblock, ublock, mute the volume, look away, turn off the monitor, cover your ears, paint over it. evolve your mind, your modality, your instincts, to disregard the stimuli of advertisements before you can even process it. whatever it takes, you do not let them win. and thats an order.
