Can someone genuinely answer this ever lingering question as to why DC has such beef with Jason Todd?
They butcher his character and relationships, and for what? There’s so much fucking POTENTIAL not only with his character but with his story! There’s a way to actually write discourse in a relationship without making it so damn abusive. Maybe I’m missing something in the story or just in general, but it’s just so fucking irritating when it could be good.
You have a nice, good boy who only wants to help despite given the short hand in life who is then given a loving father who just so happens to be Batman. That boy is then murdered by Batman’s biggest enemy (don’t even get me started on the fucking Joker who essentially has become idolized in the worst ways by DC writers and directors) still trying to do the right thing despite being fucked over by the very person he so desperately wanted love from. Then, you have that same boy who’s just a little bit older, hurting and angry— acting out in every way he can against the man who loves him but couldn’t see past his own weaknesses. And what do DC writers do instead of making this complicated, intriguing and character growing relationship into something that’s not as fucking dumb and slightly out of character for Batman? They fuck him up.
It’s an extreme to say this, I know. And this isn’t against all DC writers, but you can’t deny a lie when it’s a pattern. It’s a cut and dry story that practically writes itself. You have a little boy who is so full of hope is growing along with the main character of the story (which, in my own personal opinion, Batman has Robin not as a soldiers—and omfg does that damn phrase make me violent—but as a potential, mutual factor of character growth) , who then gets a bit too cocky and distracted by his own hubris and need for love, to a hurt antagonist that goes against the man who he once called father. Like it’s too easy to not fuck this up, and yet DC seems to manages to do this every single time.
It’s almost like they want to portray Batman and Bruce Wayne as a man who is made “tougher” by his trauma (which has some patriarchal undertones if you catch my drift) instead of growing. Batman can grow. He can love. There’s one post that I’ve seen on Tumblr how Batman/Bruce does this whole vigilante thing out of love.
Which is why I don’t get why DC uses Bruce as a tool to hurt Jason when it isn’t really consistent. He loved Jason, and this is backed up by a lot of older and a few current issues. Don’t get me wrong, I get that their relationship post-UTRH is gonna be FUCKED. Yet, even the writing in that I can’t really agree with. KILLING (attempting to kill really) your son who had been dead for years, that you loved so much, and is acting out because YOU? Doesn’t make much sense, but, again, maybe I’m looking at this through a foggy lens.
This wasn’t meant to be a long post, but it’s just been on my mind and perhaps I could use another perspective. So, again, what’s DC’s deal with Jason and Bruce’s relationship, and Jason’s character as a whole?

Batgirls and their Robins

Duke is one of Steph’s Robin’s because Steph is actually pretty metaphysically important to Duke’s stories. You could argue that Steph was the first We Are Robin kid in the sense that she was one of the first ‘normal gotham kids’ to just start fighting crime and she even made herself a home made Robin costume. Also the main antagonists of the We Are Robin kids were the Talons and the Court of Owls. You know the secret society that Steph’s father was able to uncover by himself and steal from and a Talon killed Arthur Brown. Also Robin War directly followed events from Batman Eternal which reintroduced Steph to the new 52

I worked on this from last night up until god-knows-what o'clock… Everytime I hear Radioactive by imagine dragons I can’t hep but think of an… over extravagant Jason Todd sequence cry so I tried to do a small part of it… Except my version was super chopped up so I’m sorry for such Choppy animation…
But also halfway through I decided to paint the rest because.. doing the clean lineart/blocking was super hard for me hahaha….

This lineart already took WAY too long to sketch & draw so my pitiful attempt at full color quickly pivoted to this. Inspired by a comic from Nan Hao & Shang Feng. Really recommend this silly manhua if you want an easy afternoon read.
Dick isn't a cheater or a womanizer. He can't stand the idea of it.
I don't know what was going on with the wedding scene and him sleeping with Barbara but that is a blatant mischaracterization of him.
There's countless examples in the comics where he talks about only being able to be with one person.
When Kori gets married to Karras under the force of her father, Dick needs to go home but she begs him to stay. But Dick can't do it.
The New Teen Titans (1984) Issue #26
He can't bear to cheat or be used as the object of cheating. His moral standards are too high for that. He also tells Kori afterwards that love should be between two people.
It's impossible for him to just sleep around.
Action Comics Issue #614
Batgirl (2016) Issue #17
To Helena he talks about how he can't sleep with just anyone and to Roy in Outsiders he scolds him for wanting to sleep with every female hero.
It's literally impossible for Dick to cheat or sleep around. He can't be romantic with people he knows he's not dating. The guy's rock solid.
Dick's morals exist for himself. He's intrinsically the most upstanding character in the DC community.
I really REALLY REALLY hate how DC dashed literally decades of characterization just so they could promote a ship.
It's SO out of character that there's scene in direct contradiction to this.
In the New Teen Titans (1984) comic, Dick has a dream about kissing Raven and he wakes up panicked next to Kory because he's dating her.
Kori tells him she sees the way Raven looks at him, in love, but Dick doesn't believe it for a second.
But this has been going on for a while and Dick is sick of it because he knows he loves Kory and no one else. He's scared and tired so Kory offers to talk to Raven for him which he gladly accepts.
The New Teen Titans (1984) Issue #39
With a little kissing of course <3
So Kori meets Raven and they hang out together where Kori explains the difference between friendship love and romantic love
Raven subconsciously influenced Dick to kiss her with her powers because she was in love with him. But Kori doesn't get mad at her,
I love Kori so much.
Anyways, they have their chat and Dick meets Raven again after Kori and her three week vacation sister-bonding.
HE'S LITERALLY HAVING A MELTDOWN BECAUSE RAVEN KISSED HIM
He's full on panicking that her chat with Kori didn't work. His first thought is "where's Kory?". At this point the poor boy is scared to even be in the same room as her despite Kory giving her explicit permission to date Raven.
That's how much Dick emphasizes monogamy, love, and his partner.
He's only relieved that it turned out to be a prank. Not too pleased with the kissing prank but ig it is what it is.
You can't have all these scenes and then do that Devin Grayson. It doesn't work that way. He doesn't work that way.
If Jason's still, you know, alive and relatively well after gotham war I want him to go absolutely wild. Like murder spree unhinged, batman (idc if he's "not himself") did something absolutely horrible and so fucking disturbing which will hopefully destroy any form of relationship they have.
I want him to go oh I'm not scared anymore? Neat, I will now murder 300 people! Might as well give batman a reason to be like ohh you bad person you awful murder son I was right in robbing you of your ability to fucking function oh how despicable.
Just, idk. Of all the things they've done to his character this is really up there in making me angry but also disturbed. Like holy shit if the constant victim blaming and characterizing him as hilariously incompetent wasn't enough now they do this. I really hope this gets resolved in a way that makes some sense and doesn't destroy his character even further.
