Norse Animism is based on the notion that we can socialize with the world and that the world socializes in return.
Which means our relationship with anything is inherently collaborative. We are not just interactinv with things, but participating in their existence as they participate in ours.
(This isn't reactionary I promise, it's been on my mind for a couple of days š )
Idk really how helpful this will be, but if you're a beginner who is confused by a lot of apparently contradicting information, here are some thoughts/ideas that are too basic to have been this hard earned, but I'm not called Fool for no reason.
[All of the following are just my beliefs and aren't universal or applicable to everyone]
You can find apparent contradictions in almost any magical action. For example:
Light a candle to charge a crystal with energy
Light a candle to burn away an energy and dwindle it down to nothing
When you light the candle, is it going to fill the crystal with energy?
Or, is it going to burn away energy until nothing is left?
When you perform a magical action, "setting intent" can be a vital first step that should not be skipped.
If you are aware that the fire could either charge or burn away, then it is very literally up to you what it does. As the agent of control and/or chaos, it is the witch who determines which facets of power come out to play.
Setting intent can be done inside of your head. Or, speak, sign, or write intent.
Rules about how you totally have to write intent can, for the most part, be ignored (e.g., "your intent must be present progressive tense or the Universe will never let you manifest your goals." Nah, the Universe doesn't even speak human language tbh.)
Setting intent is not the only step to working magic, and sometimes literally doesn't matter. ("It's my intent to honor the spirit of this lake with an offering! *Dumps cigarette butts and beer cans into the water* "The lake is honored because that was my intent š")
Having a limited set of beliefs about what a certain power can do is like automatically setting intent. ("It's only possible that candles burn away energy, so when I light it, of course it will have a banishing effect.")
Setting intent in this manner only works to the extent that the power you are working with could already do the thing. If you've got a freezer with an ice dispenser on the door you can intend to store food inside it to chill, or, you can intend to get water out of the door, but it doesn't matter how much you intend to fry a chicken. The fridge does not do that action.
Tradition in and of itself can advise how to resolve contradictions of magical meaning. This includes religious, magical, and cultural traditions.
What's important to remember is that just because one group does it one way, it doesn't mean that their way is universally correct.
A lot of people enter into the world of witchcraft with the concept that there is one universally correct set of methods and rules by which to perform magic. These methods are secret, but written down somewhere, and the key to learning magic is to just find the truest set of rules to magic. Magical truth is mutually exclusive, and contradictory information must either replace current truth, or be rejected as falsehood.
And fortunately for everyone, none of that is true!
This is why someone in one school of magic can make a certain claim ("letting spell vessels touch the earth immediately robs them of their power and the magic becomes inert,") and someone else can make a totally contradictory claim ("bury spell vessels for three days to supercharge them with the power of Nature,") and both people can be equally right.
Which set of rules might be true for you?
Well, whichever tradition you're a part of.
This is why it's really important to understand where your beliefs come from, and also to engage in self-examination about what you believe about the cosmos, our planet, and your role within it.
Entering into a tradition has a curious effect - you tend to be bound to those rules and assumptions, whether you like it or not.
Reflect on whether or not your current traditions and beliefs can resolve conflicting information.
Ask yourself what beliefs must be inherent before an assumption about magical 'rules' can be true.
(P.S. you can learn multiple contradictory systems of magic and flip between them depending on needs)
One witch may be able to charge excellently by burning candles and using intent to direct the burning energy.
A second witch may discover that they really can't charge jack shit with a candle. The energy seems to slip between their fingertips. When they direct it at something, it seems to have a consuming effect - not an invigorating one.
Setting magical intent is like choosing which path to walk down. But, the paths are unique for each of us. For the first witch, the path of "Charging Through Candleflame" is wide and open, a beautiful paved boulevard they can stroll down.
For the second witch, the path of "Charging Through Candleflame" is like hiking up a steep hill littered with boulders, and also the hill is on fire.
Many magical contradictions can be explained by practitioners simply having different personal experiences, and incorrectly assuming that their experiences must be universal.
One excellent way to learn not only about magic as a whole, but also how magic works for you, is to earnestly experiment with contradictory meanings and discover which ones A) make sense to you, but more importantly, B) actually work for you.
Whether or not you can use a candle to charge, banish, or both; and whether or not that's more or less effective for you than using water, or the sun, or pop culture icons, is something that you'll only be able to discover for yourself through experimentation.
If setting intent is choosing what path to walk down, then on the course of walking down that path, there is a chance you trip and fall flat (see: "I'm honoring the lake by dumping trash in it!").
Tripping and falling flat doesn't mean that path of magic is impossible for you, or shouldn't be further explored.
It can really just mean that you need some hiking boots and a trail guide.
Or, in other words: setting intent can be insufficient to actually access and manifest certain types/aspects of power.
I have personal beliefs about sorcerous power that dictate that various powers can be more or less difficult to access depending on a variety of factors. And, a witch must learn techniques to access the power. The more remote or hidden that power is, the more capable or attuned a witch must be to access that power.
That is to say, someone intensely aligned with underworld powers may be able to easily access the facets of death and decay that exist within many natural forces. But, someone without that alignment might instead need capable techniques gained through learning and practice in order to access those same powers.
And someone with neither of those things, who only tries to set intent and starts on a difficult path filled with roadblocks, may falsely assume that something "just doesn't work for me," when in reality, it's just more difficult to access.
This is why one witch can say, "roosters are a powerful source of connection to the underworld," another witch can say, "roosters only connect to the underworld if you use their feathers in a certain ritual," and a third witch can say, "roosters don't connect to the underworld," and all three are speaking from valid personal experience.
Experimenting with different techniques means learning a wide variety of ways to perform magic, including different paradigms, rituals, techniques, and methodologies.
Many systems of witchcraft contain concepts of when power is more or less available (the easiest example is the types of power more freely available due to the phases of the moon). Learning these systems can assist in discovering the accessibility of various powers.
Research is your friend.
There are many reasons why witches have different lived experiences with magic (the topic of which would be enough to fill a book or two). As a witch-practitioner, your role in the creation of magic can't be ignored.
It's through your own culture and traditions, your own intent, and your own sorcerous techniques and education, through which you will be able to determine what aspects of magic are true to you - and which do not apply.
I ask myself this a lot lately: is everything exactly what it seems?
The mind and the senses kind of naturally rail against those spirits we engage with that can't be categorized or rationalized easily - not the unknown, but rather the can't-be-known.
Some things have no name, others have no form. On a very surface level, we work to let go of expectations so we can see what's really there. In a deeper sense, I believe we have to continue to cast aside these constraints we put on the spirits we engage with, and our way of perceiving them.
Spirit work involves a lot of fighting against our own apophenia - a need to distort by forcing into form and creating connections that aren't there. It's really easy to want to assign name and nature to something that can't fit neatly into a box.
It's a fact that we will make mistakes, be mistaken about the nature of, or identity of, a spirit at some point in the journey. The trick is to keep peeling away the layers, until pretty wrappings and trappings fall away and we can see what's really in front of us.
Don't blink. Don't be afraid to take yourself apart. Let yourself, and the spirits around you, become complicated.
Every January, as we scurry off to the grocery store to buy pounds upon pounds of citrus fruit, we joke in my household that we must have scurvy.Ā I have multitudes citrus-forward cocktails that are designed to fight of the mid-winter ennui - lemon-drop martinis and whiskey sours - weāve even experimented with putting clementine juice into drinks!
So when I found a recipe online for a Vitamin C heavy syrup that doesnāt HAVE to be served in alcohol form - I was pretty excited.Ā Ā Better yet, it called for using evergreen needles which (if youāve been following along) is completely in line with my study of Eastern White Pine that I have decided to undertake this month.
Serendipity is funny things: along with evergreen needles, the major vitamin C contributor in this recipe is rose-hips and I happen to have dried a bunch from Rosa Rugosa that I harvested at the beach in September that have been waiting for the perfect project.Ā Ā Because Iām an overly ambitious kitchen witch (who also has a partner that loves food) - I had everything else needed for this recipe all set to go.
The crafting was surprisingly simple - its just a simple syrup - something that Iāve made dozens of times out of all sorts of ingredients.Ā You just want to leave theĀ āteaā part of the mixture on the stove for a long time - weāre talking hours.
In the end I used Eastern White Pine and Rosa Rugosa rose hips for the vitamin C; cardamon, cinnamon and allspice for flavoring, a knob of ginger for its anti-inflammatory properties; lemon balm for its calming effect, and orange and calendula for sunshine energy.Ā Ā For a sugar, I used raw local honey which is my go-to for most things.
So far, Iāve been loving having this in my life.Ā Iāve been adding some to my turmeric and ginger tea every day - it adds a nice earthy/herbal/woodsy taste but isnāt overpowering.Ā Ā I will absolutely make this again and look forward to experimenting with different flavors/added intentions in my syrup.

For the witches and pagans who need to hear it, connecting with nature is supposed to be about like, actually observing nature over long periods of time, not doing stuff like hoarding endangered bird feathers and beach sand, or just meditating out in aesthetically-pleasing locations. Can you tell me exactly when your wildflowers and weeds start blooming? When do your bugs come out of hibernation? When do migratory birds come and go? How does the air feel during different times of year? If you can't do stuff like that, you aren't connecting with nature.
Just some things I've done that have helped me out tremendously with my own.
Cross-reference everything and anything before adding it in with pen. I usually aim for between four and six sources at least.
Table of contents! Number your pages and start a table of contents on the first one. Make sure you reserve the first few pages to continue it.
Print out charts to paste in. I have the wheel of the year in mine! It was so much easier than drawing it.
If you have trouble remembering what a specific plant looks like, and if it's available near you, press-dry a leaf or stem and paste it next to its information.
Sources! Write down where you found the information! If you have further questions that your book isn't answering yet, go to the source!
Cleanse your book when it feels heavy. Not physically heavy - you understand what I mean.
Keep crystals on top of it. Depending on what you keep on it, the qualities of the crystals will keep the book feeling fresh and light.
Don't just copy paragraphs and information straight from your sources. Paraphrase things in your own words so that it's easier for you to keep them in your head. Yes, having a book to reference is great, but it's also great to study it so you don't have to use it every time you have a question!
Share. Sharing grimoires with others can be massively beneficial to everyone involved, especially if you're swapping information. Seeing from other perspectives is always a good idea.

Besides being wonderful aromatics and flavorful additions to your cooking, GarlicĀ and Bay LeavesĀ are quite useful in any kind of spellwork.Ā
GarlicĀ aids in protection and healing, especially when hung around the home or added to charmed dishes. Itās also said to induce lust when eaten.
Bay LeavesĀ were a favorite additive in Roman times, and are also used for protection and healing. When added to brews or other foods, Bay LeavesĀ encourage clairvoyance and wisdom.Ā
For when someone has REALLY done you dirty and you just need a quick and powerful burst of baneful energy. This one is powerful, fast-acting, and short-lived, by nature it can really f a person up and can't be undone/reversed once you've cast it. As always, practice responsibly and be safe!
A lemon (naturally.)
A knife to help handle said lemon
A leaf or piece of paper with your target's name/identifying info on it (taglock)
Ginger/Cayenne Pepper to help empower/speed up the spell. Both preferred, but just one can do.
Salt/Black Pepper, good baseline ingredients for most hexes
Anything nasty or spicy you can think of. Hot sauces/peppers, old vegetable juices, lint/dust, dish scum, you name it.
Important note: This is not a spell you want to use needles, nails, or other hard things in. Keep it soft and organic if you can. You'll see why.
Throughout all of this, I find hexes to be a good opportunity to speak your mind, let the target know exactly how they fucked up and how this is the consequence of their actions.
Prepare your taglock and cut an opening in your lemon. Give it some room in the middle.
Roll up or stuff the taglock inside the lemon alongside all of the other ingredients. Be sure to add the ginger and cayenne for best results.
Once it's all in there, give it a little roll/squeeze to make sure those lemon juices permeate all the nasty insides. Let the citrus sting and the spices burn, let the grossness reflect the grossness they've wrought on your own life being sent back.
Chop the whole thing into pieces in preparation for the next step.
Once you're ready, chuck it into the garbage disposal.
If you don't have a garbage disposal, a blender with some liquid should work too. You could even continue using nasties like lemon or pickle juice.
Your lemon is now ground up and liquefied. Dispose of the remains however you please.
In honor of eclipse season, I wanted to share a recipe to bring your buzz down a notch (or two). I've been drinking this nervine tea for nearly five years now; it features all of my favorite herbal flavors! I'm not going to go into detailed herbal profiles for each of these botanicals, but I suggest looking into them more if you are curious. I think learning the basics of herbalism can greatly benefit the kitchen witch.
Each of these ingredients can be found in any decent grocery store, bought online, or grown yourself. The combination is designed with flavor and herbal actions in mind; it's not a measure of exact ingredients - mix with your heart. All of these botanicals are well tolerated and can be drunk regularly by most people. Please be careful when trying new herbs; allergic or other adverse reactions can occur.
Hibiscus, Hibiscus sabdariffa Hibiscus is the primary flavoring agent in this blend. It gives our tea its Cool, Moist, and Sour properties. Please keep in mind that hibiscus will stain anything it comes into contact with, including clothing, wooden spoons, and even countertops. If you don't think you're familiar with hibiscus, it is the primary flavor in all "Zinger" teas. It tastes tart and inexplicably red.
Peppermint, Mentha piperito
Peppermint is the first of our gentle nervines to be added to our tea. Nervines do exactly what you expect them to: they calm your nerves. In addition to being a nervine (primary benefit), Peppermint adds its properties of Pungent, Sweet, Cool, Warm, and Dry to our tea. I'm sure you're all familiar with peppermint; you could probably substitute a different mint here with similar effect.
Lemon Balm, Melissa officinalis
Lemon balm is a nervine and a mild sedative. It brings the properties of Sour, Cool, and Dry to our tea. Some people don't like the taste of lemon balm, saying that it tastes like Pledge. If that's you, just omit it from this drink. The taste of hibiscus strongly overpowers the lemon balm, though, so maybe try it first.
Tulsi (Holy Basil), Ocimun santum
Tulsi is a nervine and adaptogenic herb, which means that it helps the body manage stress better. Its properties are Pungent, Sweet, Bitter, and Warm. With its heady, peppery notes, Tulsi is certainly an acquired flavor. If you get along with this herb, you will know almost immediately upon drinking it for the first time. A little goes a long way; you don't need to overdo it.
Dried Apple, Malus sp.
Although apple is primarily a flavoring agent (and sometimes a sweetening agent) in this blend, it does have mild sedative effects that lend themselves to the overall feel of this tea. I suggest using the apples you would eat in this recipe; you can dry slices of apples by putting them in your oven at 225F for 1.5 to 2 hours. Use a sweeter apple if you want a sweeter tea.
2 parts hibiscus
1 part peppermint
1 part lemon balm
1-2 parts dried apple
.5 part tulsi
Start by adding 1 tsp tea to hot water and steeping for 8 minutes. Adjust to your tastes from there.
This drink tastes great, hot or cold.
I've never sweetened this tea because I like my drinks bitter like my soul, but I bet a dollop of honey would be lovely in thisāespecially a nice summery wildflower honey. I've added sweetened cranberries in the past (1-2 parts) for more sweetness. And honestly, I don't measure. I know when it smells right.
I apply this drink liberally, but some people may find it too strong a diuretic to consume more than once daily. I drink it any time that I feel especially anxious or when I know I am going to be under a lot of stress. My partner likes to drink it before bedtime and claims it's one of the only things that will calm them down when they feel like they have too many thoughts.
You can witch this up (it's a verb now!) as little or as much as you like. I like to work calming energy into the drink step by step as I create the mixture by working with each botanical individually. You could charge this with a candle or sigil, dedicate it to one of your favorite gods or spirits, or store it on your altar. I create bindrunes for my favorite tea blends and use them as magical labels.
