Making the whole theme of the DMC Netflix show that "demons are actually the victims of jingoistic American military imperialism" is such a fundamental antithesis of the entire beating heart of the Devil May Cry franchise. Honestly it's exactly what I expected from a cynical western production.
The Devil May Cry series is about how humanity is superior because humanity is capable of love. Demons may have power and strength which allows them to assert their will over the world and cause suffering. But humanity will always overcome, humanity is capable of more than demons ever will be. Because devils never cry. Only humanity has the capacity for love that allows them to feel sorrow at the loss of their loved ones. Only humanity has the drive to self sacrifice in the name of protecting those we cherish and value.
The reason Dante and Nero are the badasses that they are is because of their human genetics, not their demonic blood. Vergil loses because he tried rejecting his humanity and just embracing his demonic lineage in the name of striving for more power. Vergil loses his soul and is enslaved and humiliated because he pushes his only remaining family away, he forgot that the very reason he became obsessed with power is because he wanted to be able to protect Dante the way he couldn't on the day they lost their home. And Vergil is only redeemed when he is reclaimed by his son, and has familial love forced onto him whether he wanted it or not. The theme song of DMC5 is called LEGACY for a reason, because the ties that bind for better and for worse will always be a part of you. And it is the characters HUMANITY that makes that the case.
Family and love is the FOUNDATIONAL theme of the Devil May Cry series from the very beginning. This isn't even very depthful literary analysis, the games are incredibly blunt with these themes.
This is incredibly surface level reading. And yet somehow the creators of the Netflix show either didn't get it, or deliberately disregarded it. Either way, god awful show. If you enjoy it, you CANNOT say that you also enjoy the video games. They are mutually exclusive. What exactly do you like about the games, if you derive ANY enjoyment whatsoever from this show that uses the source material as toilet paper?
At least have the integrity to admit you just think the video games are stupid and the show is superior because it isn't a video game. At least then I could respect that. Don't try and pull this "I enjoy both" bullshit. Bullshit as in you're fucking lying.
Maybe the reason the dmc reboot and Adi Shankar's show cannot seem to get Sparda right or show him the respect he deserves is because they are ultimately too mean-spirited and cynical to ever understand Sparda. Think about it, Sparda woke up to justice and stopped an invasive empire because he found love and compassion. His journey is that of redemption and nobility. He is an unambiguously good person whose heroism sets the foundation of Devil May Cry.
Adi Shankar and Ninja Theory made works that are far too void of love and compassion to understand that. That's why they couldn't get Sparda or even DMC as a whole right.
My favorite part of Trigun (1998) was when Wolfwood said "you've already tried love and peace, Vash... now, it's time to Try Gun." I cried.

thank you @knightofgoetia for the idea for the gems i loved it
conversations had moments before disaster
so thrice dante has killed him. first, above temen-ni-gru. then, at mallet island.
and now a third time. it is the ultimate homicide: he has slaughtered vergil’s character, his very spirit.
The longer, wavy hair is canon TO ME.
Why do you think the DMC fandom reacted with such vitriol to the show, unlike other fandoms like Sonic or CV? Personally, while NDMC is not a good product in any way, not even as its own thing because it's either dull or offensive, I didn't find it that inherently worse than NCFV or Nocturne or anything related to Sonic.
Is it because the fandom is bigger? Because fans are not so starved they would eat dirt, like CV fans in 2017? Or because this format of snarky adaptations that only tangentially adapt famous games in the series is finally growing stale?
I am being sincere when I say that I think that DmC Devil May Cry gave them antibodies.
This series has been through LITERALLY the EXACT same thing before. A western produced "new continuity" that loses the heart and soul of the original games while wiping its ass with the characterization and thematic intentions of those games, and is bloated to the brim with americacentric political commentary that's so on the nose that even people who agree with it should be annoyed.
It is one to one exactly the same product. And the people who DEFENDED that game were saying the EXACT same things that the people who are sucking off the netflix show are saying. Word for word.
The body can fight off an infection more easily the second time around.
Other game franchises haven't really had that experience, not really. Castlevania had Lords of Shadow, but that wasn't... icky. In the way that Netflixvania was. You know? It was just its own thing, it wasn't an offensive selfish mockery of everything that the franchise and characters were about. Even in the way that continuity made drastic changes to Trevor/Alucard and Dracula himself, it really did feel like it was just a new take. Whereas Netflixvania felt like it was actively saying that the video games were stupid, the characters from the games were nonexistent, and what they were creating was superior in every way.
It's like a pretentious spitefulness. That's how I would describe the likes of DmC Devil May Cry and Netflix May Cry, and Netflixvania and IDW Sonic and the Paramount Halo live action show ect ect. Shlock made by narcissists who think they're creating REAL ART out of an inferior source material.
DMC is also unique I think in the fact that after DmC Devil May Cry happened, we did end up getting DMC5 later. A return to the original continuity, and it was wildly popular and successful. So there was a vindication for the OG fans thanks to the new game. So the Netflix show feels even more egregious in the face of that.
Taking an evolutionary anthropology class has made me hate Netflix DMC's use of demons as a metaphor for different races even more
RACE IS A SOCIAL CONSTRUCT! DIFFERENCES IN PHYSICAL FEATURES ACROSS DIFFERENT POPULATIONS VARIES WIDELY EVEN WITHIN ONE ETHNIC GROUP, AND THEY ARE NOT EXCLUSIVE TO SPECIFIC PEOPLES! HOW WE CLASSIFY RACE IN ONE COUNTRY ISN'T GOING TO BE THE SAME IN ANOTHER!
BY TRYING TO EXPLAIN THAT DEMONS ARE A SUBSPECIES OF HUMAN, YOU END UP REINFORCING THE IDEA THAT DIFFERENT RACES ARE INFACT BIOLOGICALLY DESTINED TO BEHAVE DIFFERENTLY TO THE "DEFAULT"! YOU CANNOT MAKE AN ANTI-RACISM METAPHOR USING AN IDEA THAT HAS BEEN USED TO ENFORCE RACISM
Silly dmc 3 Dante.
