hello dmc fans i am new to the franchise. i hope you enjoy my contributions
i will draw more serious works i swear. i wanted to be silly first
Almost every person I've seen highly praising the new Netflix DMC adaptation has almost always followed by saying, "I've never played the games" or "I've only DMC 5"
And that tells me everything I need to know
Taking an evolutionary anthropology class has made me hate Netflix DMC's use of demons as a metaphor for different races even more
RACE IS A SOCIAL CONSTRUCT! DIFFERENCES IN PHYSICAL FEATURES ACROSS DIFFERENT POPULATIONS VARIES WIDELY EVEN WITHIN ONE ETHNIC GROUP, AND THEY ARE NOT EXCLUSIVE TO SPECIFIC PEOPLES! HOW WE CLASSIFY RACE IN ONE COUNTRY ISN'T GOING TO BE THE SAME IN ANOTHER!
BY TRYING TO EXPLAIN THAT DEMONS ARE A SUBSPECIES OF HUMAN, YOU END UP REINFORCING THE IDEA THAT DIFFERENT RACES ARE INFACT BIOLOGICALLY DESTINED TO BEHAVE DIFFERENTLY TO THE "DEFAULT"! YOU CANNOT MAKE AN ANTI-RACISM METAPHOR USING AN IDEA THAT HAS BEEN USED TO ENFORCE RACISM
My understanding of Dante is that he has a lot of noble ideals, but he doesn't always live up to them. He's a hypocrite. And I think that's very human of him.
Dante thinks the love between his mother and father was a beautiful thing that's worth celebrating, even if it was probably doomed from the very start, and it ended in tragedy not only for her, but for himself and his brother. And yet, even though Nero can protect himself and wants some kind of relationship with Dante, he hid the truth of their relationship for years in a misguided effort to protect Nero.
Dante has shown compassion to demons who live peacefully in the human world, including Trish, Lucia, Brad from the 2007 series, and there are probably more that I don't know about. Trish is a particularly noteworthy case, since she acted maliciously against him, but after she proved her capacity for good she became perhaps his most trusted ally. And yet, he won't give himself the same chance, he lives a solitary life with very few friends, and keeps the friends he does have at arm's length.
I don't think it's as simple as Dante hating his demonic side, the way Vergil hates his human side in DMC5. But in the same way that Vergil felt like an "incomplete being" in Arkham's words during DMC3, I think Dante himself feels... "Subhuman", you could say. Like he doesn't truly belong anywhere, like it's not his destiny to be happy.
It's because of his demonic nature that he inherited his father's enemies, and so many who got close to him had their lives ruined or were even killed, and it's because of his human nature that knowing that hurts so much.
He's good at heart, but also has so much trauma and a really bad case of survivor's guilt. And because of that he acts like an asshole to the people he loves sometimes.
moody teenagers and chores together is a recipe for disaster. Especially if the said teen is out for your blood
I can feel you out there

Devil May Cry (2007)
Vergil fight style: Clearly saw a sword that looked like his in a book and proceeded to copy the style from movies and other books that went into more detail. Fisticuffs ability gained for the moments he lost/may drop his sword. Leans more heavily on magic abilities with sword in hand. Mild amount of weapon improvisation.
Dante fight style: Gun skills learned from mercenary work to go with sword skills that are less refined in appearance. More style than substance for intimidation effect, but always manages to get the job done via brute forcing things. Excellent threat level assessment skills with minor gaps for new information. High amount of weapon improvisation.
Nero fight style: Despite having official training under a religious military sect and specialized weaponry, the preferred and most utilized method of combat is, "Hands Rated E for Everyone."
Now, this? This would’ve made more sense. But knowing the most hardcore DMC Reboot haters, they’ll just be like, “why use reboot? People hated the reboot, I thought we were past this, use the original designs and blah blah blah.”
To me, THIS would’ve worked better. DMC reboot already had a different tone, different lore, and of course, since it was a reboot, the political theming could have worked here. Minus the whole racism allegory for the demons. And then Reboot Vergil could be the best villain character in the anime with him leading a whole demon army and then Netflix Lady and Reboot Dante can have a swearing competition that the internet could meme on. Plus, I could take Reboot Vergil a little more seriously.
I just kept thinking, “why not just use the DMC Reboot?” As much as that game’s writing sucked, I think that game could’ve deserved a sequel at least. There was plenty of room to make one and have that be its own separate universe while the original DMC continues as normal.
Capcom does it with the original timeline of Resident Evil and the remake timeline of Resident Evil, so why not give the same treatment to Devil May Cry? At least that’s how I personally would have done this.
