I Hated Homecoming

I Hated Homecoming

I am so tired of a teenage Peter Parker in all my non-comic book media. Peter graduated high school in, like, issue 34 of the comic book, in the mid-60’s when Steve Ditko was still drawing the guy. He’s been an adult of some kind for almost the entirety of his 50+ run. I get that adaptions aren’t meant to be exact replicas and they’re supposed to bring something new, but the things is, they really aren’t. All the movies just keep treading the same ground, Spider-Man is so much more than a high school student. And on that note, I know Stan Lee said in some interview somewhere that Peter Parker is meant to be a so called “everyman” but I’m pretty sure that just means he has to deal with real world problems, not that he’s a generic audience stand in. Even if that is what he mean, it isn’t what Peter is, not anymore. Peter Parker has had fifty years of writing to establish a distinct and definitive personality, none of which was seen in Homecoming. I don’t know what character Tom Holland was given to play but it wasn’t Peter Parker, that’s for sure. Honestly, the whole “he’s just a good kid” vibe he had makes it seem like he was playing Miles Morales more than Peter Parker, the science magnet school and Ned/Ganke Thing certainly don’t help with that. Why did Marvel feel the need to rip off the character that hasn’t even been around for one decade instead of using stories from the character that’s been around for five. Not to mention Tony Stark. For one thing, I don’t really like that character in the first place and secondly, why did he need to shoehorned in as some kind of stupid father figure that Peter doesn’t need? He isn’t even good at that and inserting him into what is meant to be a homage to one of the most iconic scenes in comic books gives me no end of frustration. I have never been satisfied with any of the cinematic adaptions for Spider-Man and the fact that the current one is just Marvel pandering to a false fandom created version of Spider-Man is infuriating. I blame the Raimi films, they were the mainstream audience’s introduction to this character and it wasn’t a good one. Tobey Maguire’s nibbish version of Peter Parker was cemented into the minds of the general public and I hate it. Now I’ll admit, I have a very particular view on what Peter Parker is meant to be like and I struggle with being flexible in my opinions, but I just wish my favorite character didn’t have so many problems with false public images.

Fairy Tail Question

Is Lucy’s luck ever really explored? They hint at there being something special, especially around the Tenrou Arc but nothing ever really comes of it. I think it would have been neat to take that plot device and actually go somewhere with it, Celestial Spirit Magic as a whole really could have gotten more development, I think. The idea of it has so much potential and the Heartfilia family history too, a matrilineal line of celestial spirits who may or may not come from nobility in a country where the Princess/Queen is also a celestial spirit mage? (was that ever confirmed in the manga or it is it anime only?) I guess the worldbuilding in general is a lot of wasted potential. Mashima gave us such a wonderful world and then never really explores it, kind of reminds me of the lost potential in Naruto and its political landscape which could have been so interesting and then was ignored in favor of cliche shounen power boosts and big energy/monster fights.

AO3 Complaint

It’s really frustrating that AO3 conflates Past relationship tags with the overall relationship tag. If I’m trying to find fics about a specific ship, I don’t want to have to deal with stories that are actually about a different relationship and the one I want is already broken up. I wish there was a feature for just ships that are past or temporary. It’s really annoying when people tag a ship that they plan to break up or are actively writing negatively about. Everyone is free to write about whatever ship they want, I just find it kind of rude for people to tag ships they don’t actually like so that people who do like it and are specifically searching for fics about them end up having to deal with fics that are the exact opposite of what they want to read.

The same thought goes into Tumblr and other social media post where people tag ships that they’re actually against and force people who do like them to read their negativity.

Hetalia - Hogwarts

I don’t actually have much interest in the Harry Potter fandom, not anymore. I think the entire series is overrated and that there are way too many Hogwarts AUs out there.

That being said, America would absolutely be sorted into Slytherin no matter what he likes to say about him being the Hero.

Fairy Tail time problem

One thing that’s always buggged me about Fairy Tail is that we never get an entirely clear idea of how much time is passing, like in a general sense. Sure some arcs we know for sure happen within a set amount of time between each other, like Tower of Heaven happens enough time after Phantom Lord and for long enough that the guild is completely finished by the time they get back. Since Tower of Heaven itself probably lasted around a week, at most, that means it had to happen a good few weeks, if not months, after Phantom Lord. However how much time has passed since Lucy joined the guild is never entirely clear, just kind of alluded to. We have to make a few logical assumptions to try and figure it out and rely on the info we get from the side story chapters that make up the filler episodes for context. None of which are completely trustworthy, of course, but it’s the best we got.

This has been bothering me ever since I decided to rewatch some of the earliest episode. Like, how much time passes, exactly between episodes 2 and 3? We know episode 2 has to happen either the next day or the day after the end of episode 1, depending on the travel time between Magnolia and Hargeon. Close in time, however you think of it, but who knows how much time goes by between episodes 2 and 3. Long enough that Lucy manages to find an apartment and get all moved in as well as develop something of a rapport with Natsu and Happy, they certainly seem closer by this point. However it’s still a short enough time period that Erza isn’t back from wherever she’s gone off too. I don’t know, it just kind of bothers me because when I think about it, most of the story arcs seem to happen so close together that you could arguably say not even a full year goes by between the first episode and Tenrou, which I don’t like, I just wish things were a little extended that the arcs take place over a longer period of time.

My Fanfic Spider-Man Problem

I love Spider-Man, I love fanfiction, but it’s nearly impossible for me to enjoy fanfiction about Spider-Man. It feels like every one out there is about some infantilized teenage Peter Parker, and I hate it. It’s not that I have a problem with teenage Spidey, though I’ll be honest it’s not my favorite iteration, it’s just that most stories have him as the only teenager in the hero community, which ruins all of his best relationships. One of my favorite comic book friendships is that of Peter Parker and Matt Murdock, Spider-Man and Daredevil are great together, but most fanfic with them has Peter as this goofy innocent kid and Matt as this grizzled adult mentor type, which kind of sucks because they can be a real riot together as friends. I hate having Spidey cut off from all the other superheroes because of the age gap, and that’s not even touching how the Spidey being written in these fanfic is usually completely unrecognizable as Peter Parker. It’s tiresome and makes me want to avoid all marvel fanfiction in general, which sucks. That’s all.

Epic Thoughts

So I’m not really sure how Jorge read a story about a ruthlessly pragmatic but arrogant man having to suffer the consequences of his own hubris and came out with the idea of that same guy needing to learn to be ruthless after ten years of war but wonky narrative decisions aside, all the songs really are amazing, it blows my mind.

I’m always amazed with how much talent is on display when you listen to music.

Isekai Idea

I think it’d be interesting to have a protagonist who is an expert in medieval history get transported into the standard savior is summoned to defeat the demon king scenario. Like, even basic knowledge of that time period would make anyone super distrustful of the church and monarchy, since they are almost always just the absolute worst. So you have someone with that background and instinctive mistrust faced with exactly those kind of people claiming that they’re there to save the world. The gimmick is that the king and head priest are actually completely sincere but the protagonist just refuses to believe people in those positions could possibly be good. I’m imagining some kind of gag story with that premises, I just think it’d be funny.

Alternatively, you take the medieval history expert and have them be reincarnated in a world where everyone has complete and total implicit trust in the church and or monarchy because of divine right or something, real or imagined, and the protagonist just has to deal with their modern sensibilities of democracy in the face of classism. Or something. It’s not a fully fleshed out idea.

ATLA fic idea

So Zuko spent almost three years looking for any trace of the Avatar before Aang came out of the ice. What if, alongside investigating the air temples for information about airbenders, he also tracked down spirit tales. The Avatar is the bridge between the spirit world and the human one, it would make sense that Zuko would consider any spiritual activity to be possibly Avatar related. I think a fun story would be about the misadventures Zuko and his crew get up to tangling with whatever spirits they end up coming across and having to deal with in their search.

This could either be a funny slice of life type story or a more serious one. One of the Avatar’s main duties is dealing with problems between spirits and humans, with him gone there’s probably been all sorts of things going wrong on that front. An interesting idea could be Zuko being forced to handle some of these problems just because he stuck his nose in it and realizing just how important the Avatar really is to the world. I’ve always though the Avatar isn’t nearly as important to human politics as they are to human-spirit relations. That could be a cool AU, with Zuko wanting to make sure Aang does his duties like he’s supposed to.

I don’t know, this is kind of just a stream of thoughts, but I think fics exploring the spirits of the ATLA world are really interesting and I love stories with Zuko’s crew, so combining the two would be awesome.
