”They won’t find you,” Shen Yuan promised. His voice was soft but it hissed in the shadowy corners of the abandoned temple they’d taken refuge in. Coming from any other person, those words would have sounded like a threat, but from him… Shen Jiu was unnerved at how quickly he was willing to show vulnerability in front of the rogue cultivator. A hint of protectiveness, of security, and he was willing to throw aside so much. Shen Jiu had to forcibly remind himself that he’d barely known him for more than a few weeks. He shouldn’t feel safe, should never let down his guard. Qi-ge had taught him that.

But… Shen Yuan hadn’t turned him in for a reward even though he knew his history—that he was an escaped slave, a thief, a murderer.

He inched closer until he felt Shen Yuan’s back against his. The rogue cultivator gave off warmth like a brazier and Shen Jiu could feel his traitorous body easing into something close to sleep. “Why are you so kind?” He said it like a curse.

Shen Yuan was silent for a long time. Rain continued to pour outside, drops slipping in through broken roof tiles. His sigh was barely audible. “…Because it doesn’t pay to hurt someone just for existing.”
