So we all know the 75th Quell wasn’t just for Katniss now, right??
It was - get rid of Finnick, people tell him too much and like him too much
It was - get rid of Mags (she’ll volunteer to save anyone), she’s always been too much of a rebel and cares more about the tributes than the games (i.e. hiding Finnick from cameras)
It was - get rid of Beetee, we’re finally done with him (I want to know why he’s suddenly disposable though). But let’s make it as awful as possible and remind him every day what his son was feeling in his own last days
It was - get rid of Wiress (and also show the world what she’s become) because she never should have won (and we’ll show people what happens when you think you’re smarter than the Capitol)
It was - get rid of Johanna Mason, we killed everyone she loved and it didn’t break her enough so now we can’t control her
And of course, it was - get rid of those rebels from 12
But it wasn’t just punishment for Katniss. She had no idea how influential and volatile of a group they were.
Honestly, I feel like the 3rd Quell might have actually worked if the Capitol hadn’t decided to just send all the most rebellious and threatening victors into them. You can’t put 10+ people who rebelled in their own games back into an arena (and this time they’re all together) and expect it to go well for you???
what makes Snow such a formidable villain within THG universe is that nothing he does was set in stone. there was no sense of inevitability about his actions and his brutality. Snow had enough perspective of poverty, capital cruelty, district hunger and not to mention his own arena experience’ and yet he actively chose at every moment to stray from natural goodness. its even more terrifying in the sense that he had the ability to care. Snow is not a mindless sociopath, he displays feelings to others such as sejanus, lucy grey and tigris but ultimately he will always choose himself. his ability to betray those he cared about in order yo advance himself makes him so much more than the stereotypical villain who is forced into his actions.
I fucking hate that the general response to RFK Jr's eugenist take on autistic people is "autistic people do pay taxes, autistic people do work, autistic people do date!"
Some autistic people don't and that shouldn't make them less worthy of life. Some autistic people do need constant help and support and that shouldn't make them less worthy of life.
Once again we're falling in the right wing trap of :
They make a hateful, fascist statement
Instead of focusing on the fact that it is hateful and fascist we try to show them that they are factually wrong
We throw our own allies and the most vulnerable of us under the bus in the process
We legitimise an only slightly less hateful, fascist view as we go
They have completed their goal of making us accept the still hateful, fascist second version, hurrah. What a victory.
Right now what we're getting to with that is that autistic people who can work and pay taxes are okay, and the others aren't. Fuck this shit.
Same thing happens with the people who are being deported ("they have a visa!", "they didn't even have a criminal record!" -> even if they didn't have a visa, even if they did have a criminal record, deporting them and detaining them in what's essentially a concentration camp wouldn't be okay, you absolute tools of fascism.)
the thing about being nonbinary is that you really do start to forget that other people have such strict walls around what is and isn’t allowed for genders. i thought we all agreed that we made that up. could you climb out of the cave real quick and feel the sunshine for a minute.
Something about the story of Lucy Gray, something about her disappearing in the snow, something about her song echoing in the mockingjay song, something about the woods of District 12, something about fire melting snow, something about dandelions peaking through the melting winter, something about the katniss being not quite ready to pick but growing, something about jabberjays mating with mockingbirds and making mockingjays, something about mockingbirds and mockingjays being the birds that inhabit the districts, something about nature and folktales and folk songs and mountains and forests and birds and the falseness of the Capitol not being able to reach it or understand it or predict it, something in it makes me think The Hunger Games and The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes are pieces of literary genius.
she entertained because thats the only way she knew how to survive
Hmm actually Lucy Gray is different from Haymitch and Katniss and Peeta because her tragedy is she caused the games to continue. If the games hadn't become entertaining, they wouldn't have continued and she made it entertaining because she was an entertainer - she saved herself but she doomed dozens more because she performed too well and it allowed the Capitol to make the games a performance in the later years. Haymitch's tragedy is that he couldn't end the games, Lucy Gray's is that she continued them.
Okay, small detail regarding THG series epilogue, regarding Katniss and Peeta's family:
So if we were to take the timeline of Katniss and Peeta's parents, Katniss's Mom was 16/17 during the 50th Hunger Games and Katniss was born (74-16 = 58) during the year of the 58th Hunger Games, making her mom's age about 24/25. On the other hand, Peeta's parents had 2 kids before him (one is maybe 19 and the other 17/18) so they would've been approximately 22/23. If we were to take a book detail, Madge Undersee, her Mom whose aunt died at the 50th Hunger Games was maybe the same age as Katniss's Mom and had Madge at 24/25.
But for Katniss and Peeta, it took 15 years to have kids, making them 32/33.
So I can't help but wonder- why on earth is everybody complaining about Katniss and Peeta having a very "conventional happy ending" when unlike their parents who had children much younger than they were, they can have children without the fear of them ever participating in The Hunger Games and yet have taken so long to consider having children.
Trauma is real, people. And that is seen in the fact that Madge's Mom has trauma of headaches from possibly losing her twin and something else, but Katniss having faced more trauma (2 Hunger Games and a War where she too lost her sister), took her time to have children in a world that was supposedly safe. Another thing is Katniss feeling her daughter move within her which was absolutely terrifying, but having her gave her joy, because in some way, she reclaimed the caretaker that she became when Prim was born.
So technically, the epilogue shows how grief can coexist with love and how Katniss may never fully recover from the pain she has endured from losing her loved ones and the fear of having the world where her children safe and happy downslide into war again (much like our current times) will always taint her happy moments, but to live life well because others have made that happen at a personal cost is important.
What are people's thoughts on the epilogue?
the hunger games with a sprinkling of our universe's problems as if they needed any more
