My biggest tip for fanfic writers is this: if you get a character's mannerisms and speech pattern down, you can make them do pretty much whatever you want and it'll feel in character.

Logic: Characters, just like real people, are mallable. There is typically very little that's so truly, heinously out of character that you absolutely cannot make it work under any circumstance. In addition, most fans are also willing to accept characterization stretches if it makes the fic work. Yeah, we all know the villain and the hero wouldn't cuddle for warmth in canon. But if they did do that, how would they do it?

What counts is often not so much 'would the character do this?' and more 'if the character did do this, how would they do it?' If you get 'how' part right, your readers will probably be willing to buy the rest, because it will still feel like their favourite character. But if it doesn't feel like the character anymore, why are they even reading the fic?

Worry less about whether a character would do something, and more about how they'd sound while doing it.

People after Luffy takes down dictators and corrupt power systems on different islands: Yayyy Yippeee I love Luffy <3

People after seeing Hiyori say the dictator of Wano who caused immense suffering for both her specifically and her people should die a gruesome death: Woah ok :/ Didn't you know he had a sad backstory? :( This goes against the themes of One Piece god what a bitch

subscribing to a fic isn’t enough I need the author to blast a bat signal into the night sky whenever they update

reasons to write fanfiction (I'll start):

share a cool scene that popped into your head

evoke a particular emotion the canon makes you feel

song made you think of a character or idea from canon

make people feel the same way about a character you do

make dolls kiss for fun

explore ideas the canon hints at but doesn't do anything with

traumatize characters and make them suffer

coddle characters and let them rest

had an insane idea for a crack ship and now everyone needs to know

the author of the canon was wrong and must be fixed

use familiar characters to explore your own ideas and plotlines

canon is too short and you need to wallow in the universe of the story

zoro’s sexuality is hilarious to me, cause i could believe anything at this point. gay? totally see it. bi? sure. straight as an arrow? wouldnt be surprised. asexual? ofc just like luffy. aromantic? makes sense he has swordsman stuff to do.

oda could tell me tomorrow that zoro’s been a sapiosexual trans woman this whole time and id just nod like yup thats silly ol zoro for you
