oh yeah what I meant by this! watched Interstellar with my brothers last night. two of them are science nerds! so well one has seen it and one hadn't before
so afterward I sat at a table with the one that hadn't priorly seen it and asked scale of 1 to 10 how realistic he felt it was. he got immediately hung up on the mathematics of the time as portrayed on screen, we jabbered about that for a while
... and second brother comes in. "Okay what you NEED to know," he says, and he's apparently talked this over with the fandom several times over, and he just takes off in this conversation and here I am sitting between two brothers who are going off about the science of well everything practically
inwardly I'm kinda making this face :D because I miss these sorts of arguments (and also I get to be a part of it)
and bro
okay yeah I could go into the whole wormholes and black hole/white hole and time shift and that sort of thing, it was a good conversation, but I'll save that for another time
and there was the whole me bringing up The Martian as more realistic and then us picking it apart too (tbh it's very good tho) but again not the point of tonight's tale
the point being
loved ones are so precious
loved ones are so precious when they're engaging in the thing they love
love languages can be arguing over science technicalities in science fiction and cinema
I love these people so much and I love that I get to be theirs.
bringing back the interstellar fandom one cranky science nerd at a time
Okay thanks for your input, NORRINGTON
we need to invent some actually nuclear discourse so this fandom can thrive again I miss potcconfessions jack sparrow is homophobic week that was such a good one
oh yeah anyway what I actually came on here to say
we muck up our lives SO MUCH yet never so much that God won't be there for us
it's okay
the third friend to join the ranks
A NEW CHALLENGER APPROACHES
he just a lil guy
You’re allowed to be excited about the little things. You’re allowed to be goofy. You’re allowed to be dorky about your favorite tv show, to make blanket forts, to enjoy cheesy movies, even just to sleep with stuffed animals. You’re allowed to do any of the things that make life a little more bearable. It’s fine, ok?
I'm telling you. Read books. There's an entire world of dead useful knowledge contained. There are so many books that have a TON of useful information while also being easier to read than textbooks.
Listen, I know the internet's gone to pieces. Misinformation is practically the only thing you can be certain of with any search engine.
But books.
I mean yeah, there are books that are inaccurate. Or outdated. But for the most part, if someone cares enough to compile so much information on a subject together into a book, they care enough to make sure it's right. After all, it's not so easy to edit it like a blog once it's published. They're not spending so much time and labor putting together random units of information they stumbled across on the internet. They're doing this with genuine research and careful time and knowledge.
Let me emphasize one more time that there are so many books with real information that are NOT COLLEGE TEXTBOOKS (though those can be incredible sources of information too!). There is real information out there in very easy to process formats if you're willing to open a book and thumb through the index, table of contents, or even just all the pages.
...I mean, it does require us to care a little bit. It's certainly not as fast and convenient as a quick internet search. But it is so much more reliable, and if you care to know more about a subject I think it's important to care enough to get some solid information about it and not just a once-and-done.
Side note, did you know the Dewey Decimal System has a number for everything? Actually everything? Want to pick up a book on crochet or leatherworking? Dewey's got you. Learn about moths? Yup. Politics? Public speaking? Languages? Writing? Architecture? Librarians have master's degrees specifically so they can help you find things in the DDS (and also for other reasons but ya know).
listen. listen to me.
you do not deserve to die.
I love you.
okay?
okay the big one that I guess I only mentioned in the tags is how WILD would it be if I could search through my likes? Or like when I searched on tumblr there was a filter of "Your Likes" that would narrow down the results
because the amount of times I've been like "oh I have the PERFECT thing to show you" from something I never expected to come up and subsequently never reblogged / tagged
...and color coding, that could be fun though I very much understand why that's not a thing
you know how AWESOME it would be if tumblr let me like. make folders n stuff? like here is where I put all my writing posts so you only see them if you click on the folder. here are the sorting methods I use for my liked posts. can I tag them without reblogging? so I can access them later without cluttering up my blog? tumblr staff are you listening?
