Ok, so I’ve been thinking about Spiderverse, right? Like how people have this really awful headcanon that Miles steals his art supplies for whatever reason. But Miles has a really nice drawing desk in his room, right? And those things are really expensive, so his parents give him an allowance that let’s him buy art supplies and save up for a $300 drawing desk, or they bought it for him for his birthday or Christmas.
But I want to expand on that headcanon some more, because his mom and dad are a policeman and a nurse. Those aren’t high paying professions. They live in a nice house in a good neighborhood and send their son to a private school. This means they have a ton of bills and probably don’t have a lot left over.
While they can give him an allowance to spend on markers and sticker paper and stuff, they probably can’t afford to spend money on a fancy drawing desk, especially if he already has a perfectly good desk already that he does homework on or whatever.
But you know who doesn’t have those bills? Who in Spiderverse doesn’t have kids to send to private school and who lives in a really nice place that screams comfortable wealth? Who loves Miles and wants to support his hobby and has $300 to spend at the drop of a birthday?
Uncle Aaron.
Disclaimers: while I have been learning ASL (American Sign Language, I am not yet fluent. Also, I am not deaf. Both of these things being said, I have been learning ASL for nearly a year and I’ve been doing independant research about the language itself and the Deaf community. What I’ve listed below are things that I have learned from my own personal experience signing, what I’ve learned in my ASL class, and what I’ve learned from my independant research.
1) When you write signed dialogue, use quotation marks and everything else you would use for any other type of dialogue. Yes, I know they didn’t do that in the Magnus Chase series, but many Deaf readers were made uncomfortable at the choice to depict sign language as not speech. Establish early on that the character signs and then use tags such as “xe signed,” or “hir motions were snappy with irritation.”
2) Without facial expressions, someone’s signs are going to be almost meaningless. All of the grammar is in the face, as are some descriptors. For example, if you can’t see a character’s face, and you’re only looking at their hands, the signs would be the same for the statement “Xe doesn’t have dogs.” and the question “Does xe have dogs?”
3) There is no such thing as fluent lipreading. The best lipreaders in the world can only understand about 70% of what’s being said, and factors such as darkness, the presence of mustaches, lack of context, and a bunch of other common things can easily lower that ability. If someone’s lipreading, they’re taking little pieces of what they can lipread, and stitching together context and other details to get a general picture of what’s going on, but there’s still always going to be holes.
4) If you’re writing a character who can’t hear, know the difference between deaf (lowercase d) and Deaf (uppercase D). The medical term for not being able to hear anything is deaf. People who use their deafness as part of their identity are referred to, and refer to themselves as Deaf. They are part of the Deaf community.

Dume manifests and devours Ezra
i can no longer take any description of a male protagonist seriously if the writer describes him as ‘brooding’
because i used to think ‘oh, that’s sexy and mysterious, etc’
and now i think of this
once you’ve been loudly cussed out by 2.5 lbs of feathers, that word only ever means one thing
you can donate to the minnesota freedom fund to bail out protestors here. I donated $10. if you see this, will you either match my donation or reblog to spread it?
Hey jsyk it’s 2018 and if you’re still drawing characters with big lips like THIS, even if they’re pale/not black, it’s fucking racist. Stop doing it.
No excuses. “It’s a stylistic choice!” It’s a RACIST stylistic choice.
“Idk how else to draw big lips!” That’s because you relied on racist caricatures and are a bad artist. Teach yourself. Learn. If you’re not willing to do that, then you are a bad, racist artist.
“But it’s part of the character design!” Yeah, and it’s racist. If it’s your OC, then change it. If it’s not your OC, make the right choice and draw them with normal looking bigger lips instead of this racist monstrosity.
And if this post makes you uncomfortable because it’s calling you out for stuff you’ve done, good. Fix it. Own up to it. Grow.
If you see this and you’re first thought is to defend this: you are racist. You are part of the problem. Congrats. Now work on yourself and unlearn that.
I feel like this deserves its own post.
Sure would be a shame if this got spread around and he lost his job 💅🏽
