Tech is immune to flirting, but she keeps trying! This was adorable!

#tech’s a coder not a flirter

Tech x Mechanic Reader

Summary: After the war, you reprogrammed a troop of abandoned B1 battle droids to serve with kindness—not violence. When Clone Force 99 shows up for a supply run, Tech questions your methods, and you challenge his logic.

You found them half-dead in the sand. Twenty B1 battle droids, dumped in a sun-scorched wreck outside the outpost, like bones picked clean by time and war. Most folks would've scavenged the parts, maybe sold off a few limbs if the servos were still functional.

But you? You were a little lonely, a little dangerous, and very, *very* good with code.

Rewiring them took weeks. You erased what the Separatists left behind, built your own parameters from scratch, and gave them something they'd never had before: choice.

You taught them to wave. To carry groceries. To call you "Friend" instead of "Master."

And when people flinched at the sight of battle droids strolling through town, you dipped your brush in paint. Mint green, lavender, sunflower yellow. You gave them smiley faces, heart decals, flower crowns made from leftover wire. You made them soft. Funny. Endearing.

They were still capable of violence—so were you—but they only used it when you gave the order.

Which wasn't often.

---

Clone Force 99 didn't arrive with blasters drawn, but the tension clung to them like dust. The mission was simple: a supply pickup for Cid. In and out. But this planet made Wrecker's nose wrinkle, and Echo kept his blaster low and ready.

Hunter spotted the droid first—lavender chassis, daisies painted across its plating, an old satchel slung over one shoulder as it meandered through the marketplace humming something vaguely cheerful.

"Is that... a B1?" Echo asked, narrowing his eyes.

"It appears to be carrying coolant," Tech said, scanning with his datapad. "And whistling."

Wrecker let out a low chuckle. "Guess the war *really* is over."

"Something's off," Hunter murmured. "Let's follow it."

They kept their distance as the droid turned off the main strip and waddled down a side alley, past a half-crumbling sign that read *THE FIXER'S NEST* in flickering neon.

The shop was a bunker of welded panels and salvaged Separatist tech. Outside, another B1—bright pink with a lopsided sun painted on its chest—was sweeping the doorstep and chatting to a GNK droid.

"Friend says no sand in the workshop," it explained, very seriously. "Sand gets in the gears. Sand *hurts feelings*."

The Bad Batch exchanged a look.

Hunter stepped forward and tapped twice on the doorframe.

You didn't even look up from where you were elbow-deep in a deconstructed astromech.

"You're late," you said, voice calm. "Tell Cid her coolant's in the crate by the wall. So's the power cells, bolts, and the weird candy she likes."

There was a pause.

"We didn't say we were here for Cid," Echo said slowly.

Now you looked up—smirk sharp, eyes sharper.

"Didn't have to. You've got that *'we work for someone mean, grumpy and morally grey'* vibe. Plus, you match the order details she sent me yesterday."

Wrecker moved to the crate and peeked inside. "Yep. All here."

"Of course it is," you muttered. "I run a business, not a guessing game."

Tech, meanwhile, was still staring at the droids—two were dusting the shelves with actual feather dusters, and another had just handed you a datapad while humming.

"These are B1 units," he said, voice laced with something between awe and concern. "Fully functional. Active. Painted."

You stood, wiping your hands on a rag. "I call that one Sprinkles."

"They're dangerous," he said immediately. "You realize they could revert to their original programming at any time—"

"Not mine," you cut in. "I rewrote them myself. Erased every combat subroutine. They're coded to help, protect, and be as non-threatening as a bowl of soup."

Tech stepped forward, clearly bristling. "Their hardware alone makes them capable of violence. You cannot override thousands of lines of military protocol with flower decals and whimsy."

"No," you said coolly, "but I can override them with skill, precision, and an understanding of droid psychology that clearly surpasses yours."

Hunter winced. Echo muttered something under his breath. Wrecker made the universal *oooooh, burn* face.

Tech, however, pushed up his goggles like you'd challenged him to a duel. "I would very much like to inspect your code."

You arched a brow. "What, no dinner first?"

His mouth opened. Closed. Opened again.

You grinned. "Don't worry, Professor. I'll even let you use the comfy chair."

Sprinkles chirped and handed Tech a cup of caf with perfect comedic timing.

"Welcome, new Friend!" it said cheerfully.

Tech took the cup automatically, staring down at it like it might explode.

You leaned on the counter and gave him a slow once-over. "You gonna tell me how unsafe I am again, or are you here to learn something?"

He met your gaze, thoughtful now. Curious. "...Both."

You smiled, victorious.

---

Tech hadn't stopped talking for fifteen minutes straight.

Not that you minded. His cadence was quick, his mind quicker, and his goggles fogged slightly whenever he got excited. Which, it turned out, was often—especially when discussing battle droid memory cores, sub-routine overrides, and how you managed to build a loyalty system based on *empathy* instead of authority.

"You replaced their original fail-safe with a social dependency loop," he said, practically glowing. "That's... innovative. Risky. But brilliant."

"I try," you said, leaning against your workbench. "It helps that they trust me. Most people don't trust anything unless they can control it. Droids aren't any different."

Tech nodded slowly, examining the code you'd opened for him on your terminal. "You used a behavioral reinforcement system. Repetition and reward. This is similar to clone trooper training methodology—except applied to machines."

You gave him a sly look. "Are you comparing yourself to a B1?"

"I am acknowledging structural parallels in behavioral learning patterns," he replied, completely straight-faced.

You grinned. "That's what I said."

Tech paused, frowning slightly. "You are... amused by me."

"Observant, aren't you?" You stepped closer, brushing your shoulder against his as you leaned in to point at a line of code. "This part here—subtle failsafe. If they ever encounter an override attempt from an external signal, it loops them back to me."

He blinked, eyes darting from the screen to your face. "That is... impressively cautious."

"I've been told I'm full of surprises."

He didn't respond—just squinted closer at the screen.

You sighed, lips twitching. "Nothing? Not even a blush? Stars, you *are* all business."

Before he could answer (or continue missing your very obvious flirting), a loud crash echoed from the street outside, followed by the unmistakable hiss of a thermal disruptor and the annoyed squawk of one of your droids.

You were already moving.

Outside, a low-rent bounty hunter—tatty armor, one glowing eye, and an attitude that outpaced his ability—was holding one of your B1s at blaster point.

"Move, scrapheap, or I'll scrap you myself," he snarled.

The droid blinked. "Friend said no yelling. Friend also said no blasters unless you bring candy."

"*Candy?*"

You stepped into the street like a storm cloud in boots.

"Is there a reason you're threatening my droid, or are you just bored and stupid?"

The bounty hunter turned to you, smug. "This thing walked in front of my speeder. I don't care how shiny you paint 'em—B1s are still clanker trash. I'm just doing the galaxy a favor."

You gave a slow whistle.

Three more droids stepped out from alleyways and rooftops, all armed with repurposed but deactivated blasters—they didn't need live ammo to intimidate. One even had a frying pan.

The bounty hunter backed up a step.

You raised a hand.

"Engage," you said simply.

They moved like a synchronized swarm. Two pinned his arms while the others knocked the blaster from his hands and dismantled his boots with surgical precision. The frying pan droid stood back and provided color commentary.

"Friend says don't be mean! Friend says fix your attitude!"

The bounty hunter was on the ground and begging within seconds.

You stepped forward, crouched down, and grabbed him by the collar.

"You threaten one of mine again, and I'll let them finish what they started. You hear me?"

He nodded frantically.

"Good." You turned to your droids. "Escort him to the edge of town. Gently."

They saluted with cartoonish enthusiasm and dragged him off, half-hopping as they went.

You stood, dusted your hands, and turned back to find Tech watching with an unreadable expression.

"Well?" you said, folding your arms.

"That was... efficient," he admitted. "But highly aggressive."

You raised a brow. "They followed my orders exactly. Didn't fire a shot. Didn't kill. Didn't even insult his boots. I programmed them to protect what's mine, not wage war."

"But the capability—"

"*Exists.*" You cut in. "Just like yours does. Just like mine. The question isn't what they *can* do. It's what they *choose* to do. And what I program them to choose."

Tech looked at you then—really looked at you. A flicker of something passed behind his eyes. Understanding. Respect.

Maybe even admiration.

"They're not like the others," he said, finally.

You smirked. "Neither am I."

He hesitated, adjusting his goggles. "Would you... allow me to assist you in refining their motor skills protocols? I have a few ideas."

You leaned on the workbench again, grinning. "You wanna help me teach battle droids ballet?"

Tech blinked. "Not... precisely."

"Come on, Tech," you said, voice low and teasing. "Live a little."

He didn't answer, but he did roll up his sleeves and pull out a datapad, already scribbling new subroutine formulas with a faint smile tugging at his lips.

You might not have cracked the flirtation firewall yet—but the code was definitely compiling.

Alpha-17 being the bestest ori’vod to youngster Cody and a yet-to-be named blond kiddo. ❤️

#tcw

A Buir's Burden (One-Shot)

This is my entry for the first week of @clone-wars-winter-challenge's The Clone Wars Winter Spectacular 2024! It's also my first attempt at whump AND my first time writing Alpha-17 (help that's a lot of firsts - and multitasking!). I was a bit reluctant about writing Alpha-17, because everything I know about him comes from fanart and headcanons. I hope I did him justice!

A Buir's Burden (One-Shot)

Summary: Alpha-17 is interrupted from his nightly solitude when a little vod is in need of help Rating: Teen and up Tags: hurt/comfort, whump, fluff (buir/adiike/vode bonding), blood and injury, clone cadets Words: 1.539 Characters: Alpha-17, Cadet CT-7567 Rex, Cadet CC-2224 Cody Prompts: Peppermint / "I feel cold" / Alpha-17 Read this one-shot here on AO3

A Buir's Burden (One-Shot)

A sharp, icy wind terrorised Tipoca City, slamming snowflakes against the transparisteel windows as it howled a harrowing song. It was darker than usual outside, the landing platforms abandoned. Inside the domed structures, the sterile white corridors weren't much busier either at this hour. To Alpha-17, it was the perfect moment to ponder in silence, as he roamed the empty corridors with large yet slow steps.

Suddenly, he laid eyes on a lonely cadet, standing out by his short, blonde hair. The boy couldn't be older than 5; but who knew exactly, with the clones' accelerated ageing? The kid silently looked up at him, his eyes big and watery. Alpha kneeled down in front of him and put a comforting hand on the kid's shoulder. "What is it, boy?"

The kid wiped his nose with his sleeve whilst making a sniffing sound, before addressing his senior with worried gasps between every shaking word. "It's-It's Cody. H-he hurt himself," he stammered, as his eyes started to tear up. Alpha gently squeezed the boy's shoulder before granting him an encouraging nod. "And where is Cody now?"

Without hesitation, the blonde kid’s small hand grabbed Alpha's index finger and pulled it after him, urging the ARC to follow him. Alpha did, only taking him big steps to keep up with the hasty child. It didn't take them long to reach one of the doors to an outside landing platform. The kid halted, pointed towards the door and looked up towards Alpha expectantly.

"Kid, what were you doing outside?" Alpha sighed, as he walked over to the door to open it. A faint feeling of dread creeped up deep inside him, not sure what he would find outside. The boy swallowed audibly before he found the courage to answer the adult. "We.. We wanted to touch the white stuff," he replied in a soft, trembling voice, lowering his gaze.

Alpha frowned at the words, before it dawned on him. "The snow?" he shot out in surprise when he realised, a faint smile appearing on his face as he looked affectionately at the kid, who returned his suspicions with an enthusiastic nod in affirmation. "But Cody slipped and hit his head!" he cried out anxiously, pointing at his brother as soon as the door whooshed open.

The cadet's small body laid head down and motionless on the hard surface of the landing platform, his brown hair and the fabric of his uniform swaying around as the icy wind touched his body. The faint feeling of dread suddenly took over, and without another word, Alpha ran over to the kid. The platform was slippery, but he was able to smoothly make his way towards the injured cadet, sliding down on his knees when he reached him.

His own heart racing, Alpha quickly checked for a heartbeat. He was relieved when he found one, noticing how the boy's ribcage slowly moved with every breath - although faintly. With the utmost care, he rolled the boy over and took him in his arms, tightly pulling him against his chest. He cautiously found his way back inside, where the blonde-haired boy was waiting nervously, fretting with concern over his brother.

Without losing more precious time, Alpha found his way towards the medbay, Cody clasped in his embrace, afraid he would otherwise let the kid fall from his arms. The blonde cadet followed closely behind, almost running into him whenever he slowed down to turn a corner.

When they reached the medbay and walked into the room, they were welcomed by the scent of sterilised equipment. It reminded Alpha of peppermint, although he hoped the young cadets would keep associating it with sweets rather than medical instruments - at least for now.

Alpha looked around, but there was no one here; no injured clones, but no active med droids either. He grunted; you could never trust a droid when you needed one. He walked to the nearest bed and carefully placed the injured kid on it, preparing to do whatever was necessary to patch him up.

Now that they were inside with some proper lighting, he was able to examine the kid's injuries. Cody was still unconscious, but he was breathing. The big gap on his brow ridge did worry Alpha, as wet blood was sticking to the cold skin. He turned around to find some med supplies in order to start his treatment.

When he returned to the bed, the other kid was peering over the edge of it, his eyes straight at his brother. Worry was written all over his young face. Alpha managed a smile before addressing him. "He'll be alright, I'm gonna fix him up," he shot at the kid in an attempt to comfort him. His big, brown eyes shifted to Alpha as he spoke to him.

He cleared his throat as he took an irrigation bulb from the medpac and gently started to clean the wound with the container’s cleansing fluid. "So, er- What's your name, kid?" he asked the blonde one, trying to sound as warm and approachable as possible. The kid focussed on Alpha's treatment, following his every move with great concern for his brother. "I'm CT-7567," he answered without looking up. Alpha huffed wryly, briefly checking on the wound before continuing to clean it. "But have you picked a name yet?" he continued, but the kid's only reaction was a shy shake with his head.

Alpha carefully examined the wound before applying coagulant to make sure the blood would clot, and thus stopping any further bleeding. After he was done, he gently placed a bacta patch on top of the wound. It would heal nicely, but the cut was deep; it would probably leave a scar on the boy’s brow ridge.

The blonde kid finally found his courage to share more of his feelings. "I wish.. I wish I had been strong enough to help him myself. To carry him back inside. I didn't like to leave him behind on the platform." Alpha interrupted his treatment to look the kid in the eyes, slightly leaning forward. "I understand; we don't leave brothers behind. But since you couldn't help him yourself, you did the right thing to come and find someone else. You'll find your strength - you'll get the experience."

He leaned back and took a cloth from the medpac, which he used to softly wipe the remnants of blood from Cody’s skin. Despite his focus, he was able to shoot an encouraging smile towards the other cadet. "I think you were very courageous tonight. I know a name that would fit you very well. Do you like to hear it?" The boy looked up at him eagerly before slowly nodding. "I think you'd make a great Rex," Alpha answered the boy’s anticipation, interrupting his nodding to make room for a frown. "Rex? What does that mean?" the cadet shot out in confusement.

After wiping the last visible blood away, Alpha put the cloth down and looked the kid straight in the eyes in encouragement before elaborating. "That you're a great leader. Knowing your strengths and weaknesses. You'll be there for your brothers when they need you, but you'll know when to call for help when you need it. There is no shame in that. You're a great brother, Rex." The boy's face lit up instantly, his eyes glistening proudly.

At that moment, Cody groaned, his limbs shivering as he finally started to wake up. Alpha immediately shifted his focus to the injured boy, hoping to make him as comfortable as possible. "I feel cold..," Cody whispered, the pain and discomfort written on his hurt face. "I got you," Alpha replied softly, looking around to search for something that could help warm the kid, but there wasn't anything useful. There was only one thing that came to mind now.

With a smooth movement, he unclipped his chestplate and put it on the floor, before quickly continuing to take off the armour attached to his upper body. When he was done, he zipped down the upper part of his blacks, and carefully took Cody in his arms again. He placed the cold cadet on his chest, making sure to drape the blacks around him. He could use his body warmth to raise the kid’s temperature.

As soon as Cody felt the skin's warmth, he sighed contently and nestled himself into a comfortable position, making a smile appear on Alpha's face. He was shaken from his affection over Cody when he realised Rex had walked over and was now standing at his side. He looked at Alpha expectantly, but was too shy to ask his burning question.

Alpha couldn't help but chuckle, slightly shaking his head. "Alright, alright, you too, little vod," he smiled, before extending one arm towards him. He scooped Rex off the floor and aided the kid towards him. Rex climbed on top of Alpha's chest, comfortably snuggling himself against his warming brother's side.

In a reflex of protectiveness, Alpha put his arms tenderly around the bundle of boys on top of him, before carefully leaning backwards. He hummed softly as he closed his eyes, feeling two small heartbeats comfortably beating against his chest, before slowly dozing off into a warm slumber.

All that Echo is I love.

There is this deleted Scene from the Bad Batch arc of Clone Wars in which after Crosshair and Rex fight Anakin confronts Rex telling him that there is a possibility that Echo has been turned. To which Rex answers: "I've known Echo since Domino Squad, He is one of the bravest troopers I've ever worked with. Sure, he can test your nerves repeating every order like you are deaf, but I can tell you this: He rather die than turn against the republic." (Link)

And I wish they would have kept that.

I wish we could have gotten more of Echo's unique quirk. You know? the one that gave him his name: His tendency to repeat everything and make sure everyone is aware of what has to be done.

It's such a unique, an honestly funny quirk that we didn't really got to see outside of the Domino Squad episode and I don't see it represented on the fandom often.

I wish we could have gotten more of that little quirk that made Echo Unique in the Bad Batch. I wish we could have gotten more of Echo in the bad batch in general.

Fives 2.0 x 4. Great take on Echo’s escape. 😃

Just over here admiring the level of sheer blind trust Echo put into this band of strange-looking clones that he had literally just met, by agreeing to be tossed by a gigantic bear of a man 20 feet (give or take) through the air up to a small ventilation shaft while clinging to the back of the guy who's wearing glasses in an active combat zone.

This, after having just been released from cryofreeze with two prosthetic legs he likely hasn't had any practice actually walking on + a scomp for a hand (meaning if anything goes wrong with this stunt, there's likely very little he can do to save himself).

Just Over Here Admiring The Level Of Sheer Blind Trust Echo Put Into This Band Of Strange-looking Clones

(May I just add that THE Anakin Skywalker is apparently just standing back watching all this go down before finally saying he doesn't actually need Wrecker's help to reach the shaft because, you know, the Force?)

Of course, Echo's an ARC trooper who had Fives as a squad mate... But he's basically putting his life in the hands of 4 versions of Fives 2.0 on steroids, immediately after waking up from months of torture/coma.

AND THEN within 10 minutes of this, he has to leap onto the back of a winged creature, and does so without any question apart from raised eyebrows.

Mad respect, Echo. Mad respect!

This is perfect!

Watching the Darkness On Umbara arc, and because I still have Bad Batch brain rot, I’m thinking about how they would have reacted to Krell’s bullshit, so here’s what I’ve got:

Hunter: Sir, with all due respect—

Crosshair, flicking a toothpick: Which is none

Hunter, trying not to laugh: —we’re not doing that. Bad Batch, plan 43, let’s go!

Krell: Sergeant, you can’t—!

Wrecker: Too bad!

Fives, smacking Rex: Why can’t we be like them?!
